Elizabeth Theresa Wood Sturtevant
2000-10-26

BRIDGEPORT, CT - Elizabeth Theresa Wood Sturtevant, 72, of Stratford, CT, died Monday, October 16, 2000, at Bridgeport Hospital.

Mrs. Sturtevant was born in Farmington and had resided in Connecticut since 1960.

She was a retired CNA for Golden Hill Nursing Home. She was a Board Member for the Center for Independent Living, a member of the Baldwin Center Rap Sessions, and a Board Member of People to Places for the Handicap.

She was the widow of Glen Almer Sturtevant.

Survivors include two sons, Glen Elmer Sturtevant of Milford, CT, and Mark Clyde Sturtevant of Florence, NJ; four daughters; Theresa Ann Gaydos of Stratford, CT, Linda Vivian Vargo of Milford, CT, Glenis Diane Pasuth and Janice Elizabeth Forgette both of Stratford, CT; two sisters; Ruth Lincoln of Strong, and Joan Rideout of Gorham; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held on Friday, October 20, at the Streaked Mountain cemetery in South Paris.

Family and friends may attend visiting hours on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unity Hill Congregational Church, 364 White Plains Rd., Trumbull, CT or the Center for Independent Living, 80 Ferry Blvd. Stratford, CT.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.

John R. Swanton Jr.
2000-01-13

John Reed Swanton Jr., 91, of Westport Island, died Thursday, January 6. He was born November 12, 1909 in The Hills, Bethesda, Maryland, the son of Dr. John R. Swanton, an ethnologist at the Smithsonian Institution, and Alice Barnard Swanton.

He attended Chevy Chase public school, McKinley Technical High School, George Washington University (one year) and received an S.B. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, class of 1931. In the early years, he was employed by A. A. Hersey, then at Faye-Spofford and Thorndike in civil engineering, building the bridge at Rouses Point, N.Y. to Vermont. In 1937, he joined the Polaroid Corporation at its transition from Land Wheelwright Laboratory. He was Production Manager at Polaroid during the war years. In 1945 he joined Arthur D. Little, Inc., where he was senior mechanical engineer in the Research and Development Division.

Throughout the years, his work was awarded more than 10 United States patents. He retired in 1973.

He was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a past president of the Bond Astronomical Club at Harvard University. He was a longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church in Newton, Mass. In Maine, he attended the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset.

Mr. Swanton married Louise May Ruhl of the Bronx, N.Y. in 1934, a graduate of Hunter College in 1933. They lived one year in Melrose, Mass. and then purchased the historic "Hyde family" farmhouse in Newton, Mass.

After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Swanton traveled throughout the world, mostly on camping trips by auto, which took them through Europe and North Africa, and later to Asia. An avid photographer, John provided some of his photos for an article written by his wife and published in Camping Journal in January 1973.

He spent his summers on Westport Island since he was 12 years old. As a boy, he would help deliver vegetables and flowers by boat to summer residents along the Sheepscot River, after helping to harvest these on the Westport farm owned by his uncle, Harry A. Swanton. He later served as secretary of the Westport-Wiscasset Bridge Commission, which succeeded in obtaining the first modern era bridge to Westport Island, completed in 1950. In 1993, together with his wife, he wrote and published a historical book, Westport Island, Maine, Once Jeremysquam.

In 1994, Mr. and Mrs. Swanton became full-time residents of Westport Island. Louise predeceased him in 1997. He most recently lived at the Lincoln Home, Newcastle, where he served as president of the Residents' Association.

Mr. Swanton is survived by five children: Virginia Russell of Wellfleet, Mass. and Bonita Springs, Fla., Dorothy Brown of Westport; John B. "Jack" Swanton of Westport, Barbara Duffy of Roswell, Ga., and Kenneth R. Swanton of Bolton, Mass.; as well as 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln Home, Newcastle, ME 04553. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, Federal Street, Wiscasset.

Elwin C. Sweezey
2000-01-27

Elwin Cardwell Sweezey, 85, died Friday, January 21 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born in Revere, Mass., he was the son of Adolphus C. and Martha A. (Cardwell) Sweezey. He attended local schools, graduating from Malden High School in 1932 and attended the University of Pennsylvania.

On September 24, 1936, he married Doris A. Van Buskirk, making their first home in Melrose, Mass. Their first child, Richard C., was born in 1940 and died in 1941. Their second child, Lynda C. was born in 1942 and resides in Southport. Their third child, Kenneth C., was born in 1944 and resides in San Jose, Calif.

Mr. Sweezey joined the Army in 1943, serving in the Corp. of Engineers. Following the service, he returned to Malden to work with his father and brother, Leslie C., in the family lumber and millwork business. In 1947, he established the Malden Door & Window Company on Broadway in Malden. During his business years, he was active in the Aleppo Temple in Boston and the Rotary Club of Malden. He was a director at the First National Bank of Malden for 35 years and a director at the Malden Cooperative Bank for 25 years.

In 1977, he moved out of the Boston area to Cape Cod. In 1983, he retired and relocated to Damariscotta, living on Bristol Road for five years. In 1988, he and Mrs. Sweezey moved into the Schooner Cove senior complex in Damariscotta. He was active in the local community with People to People, the Newcastle Second Congregational Church, and Rotary International. Mrs. Sweezey died in 1994 and he continued to live at Schooner Cove until his death.

Mr. Sweezey enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling, fishing and hunting. He made numerous hunting trips into Maine, Wyoming and Alaska as well as New Burnswick, Yukon Territory, Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. He had been recognized in hunting magazines and books for his shooting accuracy and tracking skills. His trophy room included grizzly, black and brown bears, as well as dall, stone and rocky mountain sheep and mountain goats, deer, moose and elk.

Mr. Sweezey led a full life, always considerate of others and was appreciated as a friend of many over the years. His daughter and son, as well as two grandchildren, survive him.

A memorial service will be held in Damariscotta in April. He will be buried in the Damariscotta cemetery on Church Street, next to his wife.

Irma R. Settergren
1998-08-26

Irma R. (Pekander) Settergren, 83, of Logging Road, Cape Neddick, Me., a high school cafeteria worker for 15 years, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1998, in York Hospital after a short illness.

She was born in Douglas, Mass., daughter of Charles and Rosa (Wanionpa) Pekander, and lived many years in Auburn, Mass., before moving to Cape Neddick in 1995.

Mrs. Settergren was a cafeteria worker at Auburn High School for 15 years, retiring in 1983. She was a longtime member of Hadwen Park Congregational Church in Worcester, Mass.

Her husband of 47 years, George F. Settergren, died in 1982. She leaves a daughter, Linda J. Prefontaine of Cape Neddick; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Paula A. McCarthy of Rutland, Mass., died last year.

Burial was in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, Mass.

Frederick Harry Sidelinger
1998-11-19

Frederick Harry Sidelinger, 55, of Augusta, and a native of Somerville, died Sat., Nov. 14 at Maine General Medical Center, Augusta from complications of suffering a stroke two years ago.

Born in Portland on July 12, 1943, he was the son of Harry J. and Delia G. (Smith) Sidelinger. He attended school in Somerville, and graduated from the junior high school in Union.

Frederick served briefly in the US Navy, and returned to live and work in Maine.

He was a carpenter, and also bought and sold tires for several years. He lived in Indiana for about 12 years, doing the same type of work, and had been back in Maine for the past two years due to illness. Frederick enjoyed automobiles and was an avid worldwide wrestling fan. He loved talking and visiting with all of this friends.

Surviving are his two sons, Frederick H. Horne and wife Stacey and their two children, Frederick H. Horne, II and Natasha Horne, all of Millinocket; Michael Shane Sidelinger of Frankfort, Ind.; two daughters Cassandra Sidelinger and her daughter both of Auburn; and Stacey Sidelinger and her daughter both of Auburn; his mother, Delia G. (Smith) Peaslee and her husband Forest E. Peaslee, Sr. of Somerville; eight brothers, Kenneth S. Sidelinger and wife Gladys of Augusta; Forest E. Peaslee and wife Linda of Jefferson; Richard T. Peaslee and wife Penny; Larry G. Peaslee and wife Patricia; Neil A. Peaslee and wife Susan; and Dannie L. Peaslee and wife Andrea, all of Somerville; Peter M. Peaslee and wife Lucille of Chelsea; and Hunter D. Peaslee of Somerville; four sisters, Arbor J. Huegel and husband Frank of Tamaqua, Penn., Bunnie L. Daniels and husband David of Dennysville; Cecilia A. Rogers and husband Leroy of Whitefield and Marrianne Potter and husband Richard of Somerville; his sister-in-law, Beverly Sidelinger of Tuskahoma, Okla.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. His father, Harry Sidelinger, his sister, MurielAnne Peaslee, and his brother, Frank C. Sidelinger, all died previously.

By request, there are no visiting hours and a service was held Nov. 17, at South Somerville Baptist Church, Rev. John Dancer and Rev. Warner Howard officiated. Private Interment is planned.

If desired, the family suggests memorial gifts to the American Heart Association, Maine Division, Inc., PO Box 346, Augusta, 04332-0346. Arrangements by Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor.

Arthur E. Skinner
1998-12-31

Arthur E. Skinner, 79, Waldoboro, died Dec. 25 at his home.

He was born in Worcester, Mass., a son of Edward and Cecile Reed Skinner and attended schools in Warren.

Mr. Skinner was a carpenter for most of his life. For the past 20 years he was employed by the town of Waldoboro.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Skinner was a member of the Charles C. Lilley Post No. 149, American Legion and the Soule Shuman Post No. 4526, Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Waldoboro.

He enjoyed the outdoors.

His wife, Blanche Skinner, died in 1986.

He was the longtime companion of Esther Wotton and special friend of Arthur Simmons and Jimmy Hooper.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Guy (Linda) Ponti of Pace, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Conway of Warren and Betty Hernandez of San Jose, Cal.; a special granddaughter, Melissa Trull; two other grandchildren and three-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Dec. 29 at the Shuman Cemetery, the Rev. Tom Rawly officiated. Arrangements by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Jean E. Sannella
2001-08-16

Jean Elizabeth Sannella, 69, of Bremen, died Monday, August 6 at Maine General Hospital of Augusta after a struggle with lung cancer.

Born on July 8, 1932, in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of Irvin and Helen Davis. She attended schools in Arlington and Wellesley, Mass., graduating from Wellesley High School in 1949. In 1953 she graduated from the Boston Childrens Hospital School of Nursing.

While she was finishing her nursing training she met her husband Ted Sannella. They were married on June 12, 1954, and had four children. While raising her family she also worked part-time as a pediatric nurse in several local hospitals. Mrs. Sannella and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout New England and even internationally, to lead dances and festivals. They lived in Lexington and Wellesley Hills, Mass. before retiring to Wiscasset in 1990.

In Wiscasset, she was active in the Garden Club and was deacon at the First Congregational Church, where she also sang in the choir. In 1999, she moved to Bremen.

Mrs. Sannella was active in weavers guilds in Massachusetts and Maine. She hosted a party for some of her weaving friends just five days before her death.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1995; her parents; a sister, Ruth Bishop; and one brother, Richard Davis.

Survivors include her four children, Marjanne Tibbetts and her husband Dwight of Windsor, Donald and his wife Monika of Edinburgh, Scotland, Michael and his wife Chris of Seattle, Washington, and Jane Breslau and her husband Dan of Bedford, Mass.; one brother, Peter Davis of Southborough, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 15 at the First Congregational Church in Wiscasset. Burial followed at St. Denis cemetery in North Whitefield.

A memorial service will be held at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church on Washington Street in Wellesley Hills, Mass., on Saturday, September 8 at 3 p.m.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Bremen Public Library, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, P.O. Box 234, Boothbay, ME 04538, or to the Maine Cancer Society.

Nancy C. Sargent
2001-09-06

Nancy C. Sargent, 67, of Boothbay Harbor died Thursday, August 30 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.

Born February 6, 1934 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Frank and Kathleen Joyce Sargent. She grew up and attended Boothbay Harbor schools and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School.

She worked at Mariner's Grill as a cook and waitress before deciding to help run Sargent's Nursing Home with her mom for over 40 years. She cared for many people in need. She was a very giving and forgiving person whose love didn't stop just for her family. She enjoyed making food for family, friends, and whoever stopped by the house. She and her mom operated the local Salvation Army for many years.

Survivors include her daughter, Lily Rose Starrett of Belfast; one sister, Sheila Salonick of Boothbay Harbor; two grandchildren, Joya Maynard of Bar Mills and Keith Maynard of Belfast; two aunts, Maidie Demers of East Boothbay and Merle Sproul of Southport; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.

A visitation hour followed by a funeral service was held Monday, September 3 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. Al Roberts officiated.

Contributions in Ms. Sargent's memory may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine, 126 Mystic Avenue, Rockport, ME 04856.
