Hedwick Sala Shaback

Hedwick Sala Shaback, 75, died Dec. 16 at the Peninsula Hospital in Rockaway, N.Y.
Born in New York City Sept. 29, 1924, she was the daughter of John and Katherine (Lojek) Sala. She remained in New York throughout her lifetime where she was a resident at the Rockaway Care Center for many years.
She leaves a brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Judy Sala of Thomaston, and several nieces.
A Catholic mass for Mrs. Shaback will be announced by the Strong Funeral Home, Damariscotta.
Mary Schools, 53

Mary Schools, 53, of Tim's Run, Gray, died September 2 after a long illness.
She was born here, a daughter of Bob and Eleanor Collins McClain, and graduated from Scarborough High School in 1965 and the University of Southern Maine.
Mrs. Schools worked at the University of Southern Maine for 17 years, starting as secretary and progressing to director of special events. She later became a real estate broker for ERA Worden in Lewiston and then Allied Real Estate in Windham.
She enjoyed snowmobiling and four-wheeling at her camp, and took motorcycle trips.
Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Clifford Schools of Gray; a son, Erik School, of Gray; a brother, Bill Collins, of Scarborough; and three sisters, Sandra Wotton, of Harrison, Judy Ames, of Scarborough, and Roberta Marquis, of Terryville, Conn.
Funeral arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray, Maine.
Hans Schweighauser

Hans Schweighauser, 91, Waldoboro, died after a long illness at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta on July 31. He was born Dec. 4, 1908 in Bottmingen, Switzerland.
After high school he attended the Trade School is Basel for four years. He worked in the building trade. He was a member of the Alpen Club and climbed most of the 4000 meter peaks with his friends. His favorite was the Traverse of the Matterhorn.
In 1937 he emigrated to Quebec, Canada and worked and lived as a homesteader for ten years. He left there to move to Valois near Montreal where he was a builder for 12 years.
In 1960 he moved to Duxbury, Mass. and was a well known builder there for 19 years.
He became an American citizen in 1955. He was a member of the Duxbury Corner Stone Lodge AF & AM and a Noble of the Mystic Shrine in the Aleppo Temple of Boston. As a member of the Gun Club in Plymouth he won several medals.
He retired in 1979 and moved to Waldoboro. His favorite pastime was hunting and fishing and building his home. In 1986 he became a member of the Neduncook Lodge in Friendship.
Some of his hobbies were woodcarving, stained glass, caning and working on his extensive stamp collection.
He is survived by his wife Wally of 63 years, a happy marriage; sons Hans of Montana, Maurice of Waldoboro and Bernhard of Massachusetts; daughter Delly of Nobleboro; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and relatives and friends in Switzerland.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
Harold G. Sears

Harold G. Sears, 78, Waldoboro, passed away Oct. 11, at his home in Waldoboro, following a long illness.
He was born in Brockton, Mass., a son of Harold C. and Bessie (Evans) Sears. He resided in Waldoboro, with his wife Dorothy E. Sears.
Mr. Sears attended schools in Brockton, Mass. and graduated from Brockton High School, class of 1941. He lived in Brockton all his life until he moved to Waldoboro in 1989. While living in Brockton he worked as senior custodian at Brockton High School, from the day it opened in 1970 until his retirement in 1987.
Mr. Sears was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 100th Infantry Division as a bandsman. During his three years of service Mr. Sears was stationed in France and Germany. He was the only serviceman who survived out of the six men in his Infantry. Mr. Sears played the trumpet while serving in the military. His outfit received the Meritorious Service Plaque.
Mr. Sears was a lifetime member of the VFW, Waldoboro Post 0525, serving as Post Commander for four years. He was also a lifetime member of the Waldoboro American Legion Post #149.
Mr. Sears was a member of the Brockton Assembly of God Church, The Lincoln County Assembly of God Church, Damariscotta, and most recently The Thomaston Assembly of God Church. He served as a board member for many years.
Mr. Sears interests included: gardening, travel, and talking to his Ham Radio friends around the world. His call letters were “N1RQ1’’.
Mr. Sears is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Waldoboro, son; Robert Sears, of Pennsylvania, daughters; Linda French, of Brockton, Mass., Marsha Evans, of Taunton, Mass., sisters; Grace Coppi, of Sagamore, Mass., Blanche Hicks, of North Easton, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours Fri., Oct. 13, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the Strong Funeral Home in Damariscotta. Funeral services Sat., Oct. 14, 11 a.m. at The Lincoln County Assembly of God Church in Damariscotta with Pastors, Tom Wagers and Frank Randall officiating. Burial will be in the Shuman Cemetery, Waldoboro.

George W. Secor

George W. Secor, 93, of Waldoboro, died Feb. 2 at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro. He was born Nov. 10, 1906 in Tenafly, N.J., the son of Raymond and Florence Schuh Secor.
Mr. Secor became a supervisor of the New York Stock Exchange. He was a member of King Solomon’s Masonic Lodge AF & AM #61 in Waldoboro, Scottish and York Rite Bodies, Kora Temple in Lewiston, Midcoast Shrine Club, Rockland Golf Club, Maine Bird Dog Club, and the Long Island Bird Dog Club. He loved his dogs, bird hunting and playing golf.
Mr. Secor was predeceased by his wife, Marion, and by a sister, Dorothy McCord.
He is survived by special friend Winnifred Brazier of Waldoboro; sisters Conelius Sposa of N.J. and Edna Kelley of La.; and several nieces and nephews.

Janet A. Seigars

Janet A. Seigars, 63, of Woolwich died Tues., Sept. 12 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
She was born in Whitefield on Aug. 6, 1937, the daughter of Roy and Marion (Rancourt) Ripley. She graduated from Erskine Academy with the class of 1955. She married Joseph A. Seigars on Nov. 18, 1956 and together they raised their only child, Donna (Seigars) Moreau of Jefferson.
Mrs. Seigars was an avid craftsperson and loved camping. She also had a love for singing and music playing the guitar and accordion.
Mrs. Seigars is survived by her husband of 43 years, Joseph A. Seigars, of Woolwich, her mother Marion Ripley of Woolwich, a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Daniel Moreau of Jefferson, brothers, Alfred Ripley of Whitefield, Kenneth Ripley of Whitefield and Charles Ripley of Jefferson, four grandchildren, Audra Seigars of Jefferson, Amanda Hayes of Topsham, Daniel Moreau and Joseph Moreau, both of Jefferson, three great grand-children, Christopher Vogel II, Ashley Patten and arriving soon Tanisha-Rochelle McKenzie, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one brother, Frank Dennis Ripley in 1936.

John Serafin

John Serafin died Sunday, August 27 at his home in the Basking Ridge section of Bernards Twp., N.J. He was 79.
Born in Czechoslovakia, he lived in Clifton, N.J. before moving to Basking Ridge in 1954. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed his summer home in Southport, where he was a member of the Southport Yacht Club.
Mr. Serafin was Director of Allocations and Licensing, Broadcast Engineering and Broadcast Operations and Engineering for ABC, New York, N.Y. He retired in 1986.
He was an associate member of the Federal Communications Consulting Engineers, a life senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Inc., a member of the Alumni Association of N.J. Institute of Technology and a member of the American Radio Relay League.
He enjoyed ham radio and was an avid tomato gardener and a whiz at crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed mackerel fishing on the Sheepscot River and was never far from his lapdog, Buddy.
He served with the US Air Force during World War II, where he attained the rank of captain and was recalled in 1950 as a reserve officer during the Korean Conflict.
He received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Newark College of Engineering (N.J.) in 1948. He also attended Yale, Harvard, and MIT.
Mr. Serafin is survived by his wife, Phyllis Ramsdale Serafin; two sons, John W. and F. Scott, both of Hackettstown, N.J.; three brothers, Michael of Montclair, N.J., George of Cliffton, N.J., and William of Towaco, N.J. He is also survived by two grandchildren, April and Carley.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 31 at 8 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home, Inc., 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham, N.J. Memorial gifts may be made to the Southport Memorial Library or Southport Historical Society, Southport, Maine 04576.

Albert L. Setz

Albert Lee Setz, 85, died Tuesday, February 29 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.
Born February 26, 1915 in Illinois, he was the son of Paul and Elizabeth Hartley Setz.
He graduated form East High School in Aurora, Illinois on June 13, 1934. Mr. Setz served in the U.S. Navy as a parachute rigger 1st class during World War II, serving from April 19, 1944 to January 20, 1946. He was a member of the BPOE and American Legion of Culver City, California for 25 years.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alma Jobe Setz, who died in 1991. Survivors include two sons, Arnold Lee Setz of Lawndale, California, and Albert Leon Setz of Boothbay Harbor; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
No services will be held. Arrangements were under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
Richard J. Seymour Sr.

Richard J. Seymour Sr., died on September 29 at the Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.
Born on June 16, 1931 in Gardiner, he was the son of Alfred and Margaret Hathaway Seymour.
Mr. Seymour attended and graduated from Gardiner High School, Kennebec School of Commerce, University of Maine at Farmington and the University of Maine at Orono. He was a teacher and principal in Rockland and Winthrop, and an Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of Schools in Wiscasset, retiring in 1981.
Mr. Seymour was a member of many organizations over the years including, Jaycees, Masons, Elementary Principal Association, Supt. of School Association, Maine Teachers Association, and the Maine School Management Association.
He was predeceased by his wife, Norma who died in 1986, and his father, Alfred who died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Richard and family: Victoria his wife, grandsons, Richard III and Dustin and granddaughter Jessica. He also leaves a daughter Ann and her family: husband Johan Grape and granddaughter Elsie and grandson Karsten of Massachusetts; his mother, Margaret Seymour of Randolph; two brothers, "Ted" and Jack Seymour of Randolph; and one sister, Judy Ellis of Bangor.
A funeral service was held Monday, October 2 at Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner. Burial followed in the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery in Augusta.
Rather than flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association in Augusta in memory of his wife Norma. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
