Donald G. Petrie
2005-10-27

Donald G. Petrie, 73, of Portland, formerly of Wiscasset, died Saturday October 22, at Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

Born January 12, 1932 in Wiscasset, he was a son of Donald M. and Frances Cowley Petrie. He attended local schools and was a 1949 graduate of Wiscasset High School where he was class valedictorian. He was a 1951 graduate of Bentley College in Boston, Massachusetts.

On July 25, 1953, he married Lillian Danforth at St. Mary’s Church in Augusta.

Following college, Mr. Petrie, began his accounting career with Hyde Windlass of Bath. In 1958, he accepted a position with General Cable in Tampa, Florida. He continued with the company accepting a promotion to their Virginia office in 1968. In 1976 Donald began working for Babcock and Wilcox in Virginia. In 1978 he and his wife returned home to Maine where he worked for L.L. Bean, retiring in 1996.

Mr. Petrie was a communicant of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and was a volunteer with the Susan Curtis Foundation.

His lifelong passion was sailing.

Mr. Petrie was predeceased by a brother, Robert Petrie.

Survivors include his wife of Portland; four daughters, Donna Petrie of Richmond, Va., Catherine Petrie, of Corpus Christi, Texas, Anne Marie O’Donnell and her husband Kevin of River Woods, Ill., Michelle Mahoney and her husband, James of Scarborough; two sons, Timothy Petrie and his wife Trevania of Buena Vista, Va., and John Petrie and his wife Aurelie of Springfield, Ore.; four sisters, Marilyn Jones and her husband George of Wiscasset, and Helen Shorey, all of Wiscasset, Barbara Sanborn of Brewer, and Priscilla Campbell of Wiscasset; nine grandchildren and two great-grand- children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday October 27, at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Wiscasset.

Arrangements by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 172 State Street, Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in his memory to the American Lung Association, 122 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330.

Linwood D. Pierce
2005-08-04

Linwood Denham Pierce, 78, of Damariscotta, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 25 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Damariscotta on August 14, 1926, he was the son of Linwood H. and Ella Whitehouse Pierce.

In 1945 he graduated from Lincoln Academy, and entered the U.S. Army after graduation.

He served from 1945-1946 and due to the unexpected death of his father, returned to Damariscotta to join his brother Edward to carry on the family business, the Yellowfront Grocery. "Pierces," established in 1921, became a fixture in the Damariscotta business community. In 1991 Denham moved the business to the Coastal Market Place and in 1993 he opened a business in Wiscasset, which has since been sold.

Mr. Pierce was known for his honesty and integrity, his work ethic and community service. He was named A.G. Retailer of the Year in 1977, A.G. Grocer of the Year in 1991 and earned the first A.G. President's award in 1997. A jack-of-all-trades, from plumbing to carpentry, he built his family's home, on School Street, with the help of family and friends. At the age of 42 he fulfilled a lifelong dream and obtained his private pilots license.

On September 16, 1951, he married Doris Leighton in Alna. Together they raised six children, all of who remain members of the local community.

He was predeceased by his brother, Edward; two sisters, Dorothy Fraser and Elsie Ripley; and his granddaughter, Catherine R. Pierce.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Doris; children, Linda Pierce-Morin, Jane and husband Jeffrey Tims, David and wife Sally, Steven and wife Patricia, Jeffrey and wife Denise and Donald and wife Melissa; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A service to honor the memory of Mr. Pierce was held Thursday, July 28, at the Damariscotta Baptist Church. He was laid to rest at the Hillside Cemetery, following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster Street, Suite 160B, Portland, ME04101; or the International Rett Syndrome Association, 9121 Piscataway Road, Suite 2-B, Clinton, MD 02735.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care and direction of the Strong Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Damariscotta.

Glenis A. Pierce
2005-09-01

Glenis Alberta Pierce, 92, of Wiscasset, died Sunday, August 28, at a nursing home in Dover, New Hampshire.

Born in South China, Maine on July 26, 1913, she was a daughter of Hubert H. and Nettie A. (Shorey) Hall.

Mrs. Pierce attended South China schools and Farmington Normal School. She then taught loggers' children at Ripogemis Dam in Maine for a year.

On December 9, 1934, she married Winship B. Pierce in South China. They lived in Quincy and Gloucester, Mass. until retirement in 1973 when they established residence in Wiscasset.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, an active contributor to the Ladies Organ Society where she excelled in crafts.

She was predeceased by her husband, Winship B. Pierce on November 17, 2004.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy L. McDonough of Summersworth, N.H., and Darryl A. Beliveau of Manchester, N.H.; four grandchildren; seven great-grand-children; and several nieces and nephews in the Bath area.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 9, at Chadwick Hill cemetery in South China.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, P.O. Box 350, Wiscasset, ME 04578.

Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street in Wiscasset.

Diana L. Peabody
2005-01-06

Diana L. Peabody passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 1, 2005 at St. Andrews Hospital.

Born and raised in Upper Montclair, N.J., she graduated from the Kimberley Academy and Bennett Junior College. She spent summers working at Yosemite National Park. In 1972 she moved to Boothbay Harbor with her mother Mrs. Edmund Whittaker.

Mrs. Peabody was a director and vice president of the Boothbay Region Humane Society for many years and her dedication and many volunteer hours have helped to make it a successful and prominent organization.

She managed the Humane Society Creature Comfort Thrift Shop and her knowledge of merchandising proved to be a valuable asset for its success and for the financial security of the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. She devoted herself to the love and excellent care of her companion animals.

Mrs. Peabody was an active member of The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and a Friend of the Boothbay Memorial Library. She was an accomplished gardener, loved the natural world, and with her dogs explored the many land trust properties.

She was predeceased by her devoted husband, John M. Peabody; her sister, Jean Whittaker Dikovics; her brother, Douglas Boyd Whittaker; and her parents, Nancy and Edmund Whittaker.

Survivors include her cousins, Irene Margaret Bamber and Elizabeth Godwin of the United Kingdom; her sister-in-law, Nancy Whittaker of California; six nieces and nephews; and numerous great- nieces and nephews in Penn., N.J., and Calif.

Donations in Mrs. Peabody's memory may be made to the Boothbay Region Humane Society, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556; Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, 1038 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay, ME 04537; or to the Boothbay ReHarbor Memorial Library, 4 Oak Street, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

All who wish are invited to join the family to honor and remember Mrs. Peabody, on Saturday, Jan. 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. at her home.

Arrangements are the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home of Boothbay.

Timothy S. Peters
2005-10-13

Timothy S. Peters, 41, of Boothbay Harbor, died Sunday, October 9 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Born on February 3, 1964 in Boothbay, he was the son of Phil and Janet (Pinkham) Peters.

Mr. Peters attended the Boothbay schools and worked as a painter and a clam digger for many years.

He was an avid racing fan, from Wiscasset Speedway to NASCAR. He enjoyed playing cards and just taking a ride with the guys.

He is predeceased by his father, Phil Peters; and his grandparents, Gerald and Hazel Pinkham, and Phil and Alice Peters.

Survivors include his mother, Janet Peters; one son, Jesse Peters; two brothers, Dennis Peters and his wife Pam, and David Peters; two sisters, Debra Bartley and her husband Bill, and Rhonda Belgard and her husband Butch; two nephews, Philip Bartley and Bryan Peters; two nieces, Sarah Bartley and Stacy Peters, all of Boothbay; three great-nephews; two great-nieces; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 14 at the Knights of Pythias Hall in Boothbay Harbor.

Arrangements are under the care of Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
