Phyllis C. Harrington
ELLSWORTH - Phyllis C. Harrington, 95, died Sept. 8, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. She was born Oct. 19, 1903, at Ellsworth, the daughter of Orin M. and Frances E. (Oakes) Clement.
She worked for New England Telephone Co. and AT&T for 31 years and was a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America. She also was a life member of OES, Ellsworth, and a member of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth.
She is survived by four nieces, three nephews and many close and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, W. Henry Harrington; her sister, Barbara C. Spreng; and her nephew, George Spreng Jr.
A memorial service was held Sept. 13, 1999, at the First Congregational Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Interment was at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth. Kenneth D. Masse
EAST VASSALBORO and SULLIVAN HARBOR - Kenneth D. Masse, 71, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at a Waterville hospital. Ken was born in Albion on Sept. 21, 1928, the son of Herman C. Masse and Ruby F. Masse.
He attended East Vassalboro schools, Coburn Classical Institute, Higgins Classical Institute and Maine Central Institute. He was a member of Phi Eta Kappa fraternity at the University of Maine at Orono, graduating with a degree in forestry in 1950.
A lifelong resident of East Vassalboro, he was a member of the East Vassalboro Grange and Neguemkeag Vassalboro Lodge No. 54 A.F. & A.M. He was active in the lumber business as owner of Masse Lumber Co. from 1950 through his retirement in 1990. He also owned and operated the East Vassalboro Water Co. from 1982 through 1998.
Ken was married to Freda Gray of Sullivan from 1950 until her death in 1980. He married Judith Lawler Richards of Brewer on Nov. 2, 1980.
An avid outdoorsman, Ken spent many enjoyable seasons
hunting and fishing with his friends and family. Although he traveled extensively throughout much of the U.S. and Canada over the years, the family cottage in Sullivan Harbor was Ken’s favorite place to be.
Besides his wife, Judith of East Vassalboro, Ken is survived by a daughter, Barbara Larson and her husband, Bruce, of Warren; a son, Matthew Masse and his wife, Roberta, of East Vassalboro; stepdaughters, Susan Rand and her husband, Steve, of Overland Park, Kan., Sharon Moore of Brewer, Marcia Bartol and her husband, Jim, of Brewer; a sister, Marion Doyle of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 12 grandchildren, one niece and two nephews. He is also survived by his father’s widow, Hazel Masse of Waterville.
At Ken’s request, there will be no visiting hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the family cottage off Route 1 in Sullivan Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ken’s name to the East Vassalboro Historical Society, care of Kent London, President, P.O. Box 3, North Vassalboro, ME 04962, or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast.
Philip Tracy
GOULDSBORO - Philip Tracy, 90, died Aug. 26, 1999. He was born in West Gouldsboro, May 24, 1909, the son of Alfred and Annie (Stevens) Tracy.
Phil graduated from Winter Harbor High School in 1925. After high school, he worked in the silver factories in Meriden, Conn., for three years. Preferring the country life, he returned to Maine to work with his father and brother as a third generation carpenter.
Phil was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor Noyes Tracy in 1991. Surviving are his son, Allen P. Tracy of Ellington, Conn., and his daughter, Mary Lou Hodge of West Gouldsboro; five grandchildren, Christopher Tracy and Cheryl Tracy of Connecticut, Cathy Tracy of Hancock, Philip Gregory Hodge of Bangor and Rebecca J. Partridge of Naples, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Olivia M. Partridge; two nieces and two nephews.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no services. Burial was private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Gouldsboro Historical Society, P.O. Box 94, Gouldsboro, ME 04607.
Scott Raymond Wilson II
ELLSWORTH - Scott Raymond Wilson II was born and died on Sept. 5, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was the much-anticipated and loved son of Jessica M. Ward and Scott Raymond Wilson, who they had many hopes and dreams for.
Surviving are his maternal grandmother, Deborah Pelkey and her husband, Joseph, of Penobscot; maternal grandfather, Ira "Peter" Ward and Denise Butler, all of Ellsworth; maternal great-grandparents, Norman and Dolores Morse, Charles and Ann Bradford, Georgia and William Ward; great-great-grandmother, Jessica Wood. Paternal grandfather is Larry Wilson and wife, Karen; paternal grandmother, Margaret Wallace, all of Biddeford; great-grandmother, Rita D. Couture; and many aunts and uncles. Scott was predeceased by his namesake, great-grandfather, Raymond D. Couture, Hattie Louise Wilson, Rebecca Bradford, and Norman Wood.
Funeral service will be private. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
John Frederick "Fred" Snow
BLUE HILL - John Frederick "Fred" Snow, 76, died after a courageous battle with emphysema, Sept. 9, 1999, at a Blue Hill hospital, the same hospital in which he was born 76 years and two days ago. His parents were John H. and Faith W. (Roberts) Snow.
Fred was a lifelong resident of Blue Hill and graduated from George Stevens Academy, Class of 1942, attended the University of Maine at Orono and held a master’s electrician license. He taught at Maine Maritime Academy for 29 years, retiring in 1982. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was a past master of the Ira Berry Lodge. He had a great interest in the Civil War and family genealogy.
He is survived by his wife, Florence (Burpee) Snow of Blue Hill; five sons, Barrett, Brian and Michael, all of Blue Hill, Timothy of Bangor and Jeffrey of Buxton; three daughters, Katherine "Kitty" Peasley of Brooksville, Nanette Beal of Trenton, and Lucy Astbury of Penobscot; a sister, Ruth E. Snow of Blue Hill; and an uncle, Donald Roberts of Massachusetts; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Frank Kimball of Winslow and Barbara Pierce of Augusta; and his beloved dog, Pandit, who was a great comfort and joy to Fred. He will be remembered by special friends, Olney Grindall and Frank Whitney. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred (Hutchins) Snow.
A funeral service was held Sept. 12, 1999, at the Blue Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Paul Comeau officiating. Interment was at Mountain View Cemetery, Blue Hill. The family suggests that those who desire make contributions in Fred’s memory to the Maine Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta 04330. Anthony Martin Petrie
BANGOR and ELLSWORTH - Anthony Martin Petrie, 36, died Sept. 26, 1999, at his Bangor home. He was born Oct. 8, 1962, at Blue Hill, the son of Martin A. and Josephine Edwina (Monk) Petrie.
Anthony attended Ellsworth schools and graduated from Bangor High School. He worked for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital in maintenance.
Anthony is survived by his mother, Josephine of Ellsworth and Blue Hill; his father, Martin of Chisholm, Minn.; daughters, Kristen Lee and Kelley Ann of Bangor; sister, Alicia Amy Petrie and her fiance, Daniel Larrabee, of Stonington; brother, Dale of Minneapolis, Minn.; nephew, Stacy R. Meister, Pensacola Naval Station, Fla.; and ex-wife Elizabeth Bishoff Petrie of Bangor. He was predeceased by sisters, Kimberly Lynn and Christina Ann and a brother, Jeremy Edward.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Terry Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery, North Blue Hill.
Wilbert Charles Gove Jr.
STONINGTON - Wilbert Charles Gove Jr., 67, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Rockland, May 18, 1932, the son of Wilbert and Abbie (Brown) Gove.
Wilbert grew up on Eagle Island and in Stonington. He also lived on Yorks Island for a short time before returning to Stonington. Wilbert was a well-known and respected lobster fisherman in Stonington for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Addie "Mae" (Hardie) Gove of Stonington; three daughters, Jeanette Rose and her husband, Leon Cook, of Ellsworth, Luann Debra and her husband, Jeff Eaton, of Deer Isle, and Linda Faye and her husband, Eric Hoard, of Deer Isle; three brothers, Andrew Gove and his wife, Rose, of Stonington, Vance Gove and his wife, Margaret, of Stonington, and Gene Gove and his wife, Mary Ella, of North Haven; two sisters, Janet and her husband, Howard Nevells, of Stonington, Viola and her husband, Foy Brown, of North Haven; seven grandchildren, Willie Gove, Helen Eaton, Roland and Billy Gove, Laura and Ethan Hoard, and Amber Mae Cook; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends are invited to visit with the family 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Main Street, Stonington, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sunset. The family invites friends to join them at a memorial reception at the Stonington Church of the Nazarene, Burnt Cove Road, immediately following the committal service. James "Bradley" Joyce
SWAN’S ISLAND - James "Bradley" Joyce, 86, died Sept. 7, 1999, at a Brewer health-care facility. He was born April 27, 1913, on Swan’s Island, the son of Roscoe C. and Mary Olive (Smith) Joyce.
Bradley lobster fished off the waters of Swan’s Island for most of his life. He was a lifelong member of the Atlantic Baptist Church and was treasurer for many years and he also was a former member of the Maine Lobsterman Association.
Bradley is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Gladys Francis Joyce; three sons, David Joyce and wife, Annette, of Swan’s Island, James Joyce and wife, Debra, of Wakefield, N.H., and Philip Joyce and wife, Bonnie, of Brewer; three daughters, Cheryl Kierstead and husband, Stephen, of South Portland, Constance Plumer and husband, Charles, of China, and Virginia Remick of Portland; seven grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Joyce, Justin Kierstead, Andrew Plumer, Caryn and Heather Remick and Jessica Joyce. James was predeceased by his son, Dennis Joyce, and a sister, Myrtis Colbeth.
The family invites friends to call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at the Atlantic Baptist Church, where a funeral service will be held at noon with Pastor Mark Lawrence officiating. Marcia Emma Gilley Manring
NORTHEAST HARBOR - Marcia Emma Gilley Manring, 84, died Sept. 8, 1999, at an MDI hospital. She was born April 24, 1915, in Islesford, the daughter of Verner Albert and Wattie Emma (Frye) Gilley.
Marcia is survived by her two daughters, Amy Manring of Northeast Harbor and Martha Alley of Somesville; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jones Clark Manring; and two sisters, Louise Spurling and Sylvia Gilley.
A funeral service was held Sept. 14, 1999, at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert, with the Rev. William M. Bigelow Jr. officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Gilley-Spurling Cemetery, Islesford.
Larry W. Coro
DEDHAM - Larry W. Coro, 52, of Dedham, died at home on Sept. 27, 1999. He was born on March 22, 1947, in Worcester, Mass., the son of Maurice and Doris Coro.
He was employed as a school building maintenance person and enjoyed landscape gardening.
He was predeceased by his father, Maurice Coro. He is survived by his wife, Marie (Jones) Coro of Dedham; his mother, Doris Coro of Massachusetts; children, Christopher C. Coro of Gorham, Amanda B. Coro of Ellsworth, and Michelle L. Coro of Westbrook; and a grandson, Cameron John Coro of Gorham.
There will be a memorial service held at the Ellsworth Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, Christian Ridge Road, on Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at 2 p.m., with Allan Johnson officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, Belfast.
Marion Louise Babkirk
ELLSWORTH - Marion Louise Babkirk, 90, died at a local hospital Aug. 27, 1999. She was born Sept. 23, 1908, at Hancock, the daughter of Charles and Annie (White) Stewart.
She is survived by one sister, Ruth Hollander of St. Cloud, Fla., and by several nieces and nephews. She will also be remembered by a special friend and caregiver, Matthew Coffin.
A graveside service of remembrance was held Sept. 1, 1999, at the Riverside Cemetery, Hancock. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth.
Vincent J. Austin
DEDHAM - Vincent J. Austin, 82, died at a Fairfield nursing home Sept. 4, 1999. He was born Jan. 8, 1917, at Brooksville, the son of John and Millicent (Hutchinson) Austin.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lila.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Lakeview Cemetery, Route 176, Brooksville. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
Evelyn E. Sparks
SULLIVAN - Evelyn E. Sparks, 83, died at a Franklin health care facility Sept. 14, 1999, after a long illness. She was born July 7, 1916, at Milford, the daughter of Arthur and Flossie (Gray) Fielding.
She graduated from Bangor High School and received her nursing degree from Baptist Hospital Nursing School in Memphis, Tenn. She worked in the Memphis area all of her career.
Evelyn worked in both hospital and private duty nursing for many years. The last 12 years of her career she was a nurse companion for Mr. E.H. Little, the president and CEO of Colgate-Palmolive.
While working for Mr. Little, she traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. She returned to Maine in the late 70’s and enjoyed her retirement.
She is survived by one son, William Bellatty and his wife, Royce, of Calabas, Calif.; two daughters, Judith Bellatty of Gouldsboro and Elizabeth Nunez of Mustang, Okla.; one sister, Clerice McPheters of Grapeland, Texas; a dear friend and daughter-in-law, Teddy Giles and her husband, Paul, of Franklin; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Evelyn was predeceased by her son, Harvard Bellatty in 1966; one sister, Maydell Muier, and a brother, Ralph Fielding.
A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Bayview Cemetery, Franklin, with Pastor Gerald Wilbur officiating. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-

Evelyn "Lori" Abbott
ELLSWORTH - Evelyn "Lori" Abbott, 29, died as the result of an automobile accident Sept. 24, 1999, in Surry. She was born Sept. 20, 1970, at Phoenix, Ariz., the daughter of Linwood and Jeanne (Woodard) Abbott.
She enjoyed life to its fullest. Because of her love of children, Lori was working toward her degree in child development and was working in that career field. She was a person who loved to hunt and fish, who loved the outdoors so much as to have worked several years as a woods worker.
She is survived by her mother, Jeanne Abbott; her maternal grandmother, Rita Woodard, both of Ellsworth; one sister, Robyn Saunders and her husband, Brad, of Surry; two brothers, Ron and his wife, Jennifer, of Ellsworth and Linwood Jr. and his wife, Elise, of Weare, N.H.; her special niece and nephews whom she loved very much, Annie, Josh and Steven; one uncle and aunt, Barry and Betty Woodard and their family. She will also be remembered by a special friend, Paul A. Leach of Penobscot and her best friend, Mary Alexander Jack of Ellsworth. She was predeceased by her friend and grandfather, Ralph E. Woodard Jr. in 1997.
A service of remembrance will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at the United Baptist Church of Ellsworth, with the Rev. John Dunn officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Burn Center in Boston. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth.
Mr. Earl J. James Jr.
LAMOINE - Mr. Earl J. James Jr., age 57, formerly of Emory Street, Saugus, Mass., died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, in the Harborside Healthcare Northshore Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Gordena (Nichols) James.
Born in Lynn, Mass., and raised in Saugus until moving to Lamoine in 1984, he was the son of Florence (Woodward) James of Saugus and the late Earl James. He was employed as a jet engine machinist for General Electric Riverworks in Lynn for 24 years and commuted from Lamoine for several years prior to his retirement in 1996. He was a member of the William Sutton Masonic Lodge of Saugus.
Besides his wife and mother, he leaves two daughters, Lisa Gray and her husband, Alan, of Saugus, Terry James and her companion, Robert Sanborn, of Lamoine; one son, Harry James of Lamoine. He is survived by four grandchildren, Justin, Courtney and Lindsay Gray and Clayton Sanborn.
A funeral service was held in the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, 549 Lincoln Ave., Saugus, on Aug. 31, 1999. Interment was on Sept. 1, 1999, in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Lamoine. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association of Massachusetts, So. Eastern Branch, 1 Abbey Lane, Middleboro, MA 02346.
Ruth May Kronstrand
TOPSHAM - Ruth May Kronstrand, age 77, of Cathance Road died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Amenity Manor in Topsham. She was born in Milbridge on June 4, 1922, the daughter of Cecil L. and Mabel (Strout) Whalen.
She attended Milbridge schools and worked at Freeport Shoe for many years. On May 23, 1969, she married Arthur Kronstrand in Freeport. Mrs. Kronstrand worked at the Waltham Hospital in Massachusetts. After retiring in 1982, they moved to Topsham.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur Kronstrand of Topsham; three sons, Rickie Sandstrom of Winter Harbor, Omar Whalen of Sorrento and Charles Berry of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one daughter, Carol Merrill of Franklin; one stepson, Kenneth D. Kronstrand Sr., of Lisbon; one stepdaughter, Gail S. Lallier of Topsham; three brothers, Lawrence Whalen of Milbridge, Gardiner Whalen of New Hampshire and Robert Whalen of Sullivan; five sisters, Jeannette Anderson of Franklin, Josie Berry of Virginia, Barbara Fraser of Bath, Gloria Severance of Kittery and Virginia Lewis of Seattle, Wash.; several grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Sept. 7, 1999, at Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High St., Bath. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath.
