Donald Raymond Hobbs
HANCOCK - Donald Raymond Hobbs died April 12, 2000, at home in Hancock after a long illness. He was born in Plainfield, N.J., June 6, 1933.
After graduating from Plainfield High School he served with the U.S. Army in Korea. He worked for 20 years for Union Carbide and founded the Jamesburg, N.J., volunteer fire department. He moved to Maine in 1972 and operated Don’s Grocery in Hancock for many years.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Lorri Beth, and by his brother, Leroy. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joan M. (Nixon) Hobbs; a daughter, Peggy Sue Woodworth of Hancock; two grandchildren, Russell and Sarah Beth Burnett of Lamoine; two brothers; Kenneth and Robert; and one sister, Eleanor Dencklau, all of New Jersey.
A graveside service will be held at Riverside cemetery in Hancock at a later date. The family requests that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Rev. George C. McCormick
DEER ISLE - 7/5/26 - 3/16/00 - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2000, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Stonington. The Principal Celebrants will be Bishop Joseph J. Gerry and Auxiliary Bishop Michael Cote of Portland.
Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, followed by a reception at the parish hall.
Richard D. Bradbury
MILBRIDGE - Richard D. Bradbury, 75, died April 1, 2000, at a Bangor hospital. He was born at Rangeley, July 12, 1924, the son of Frank and Marjorie (Oakes) Bradbury.
He served in the Army during World War II with the 35th and the 106th Recon Div. in France and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Bronze Star. Following the war, he continued his service to country with 34 years in the Army Reserve. He was a member of the Milbridge Congregational Church. For 25 years he worked as the manager of the state liquor store in Milbridge.
He was very active in Masonic orders and served his lodge, Pleiades Lodge No. 173 AF and AM of Milbridge for more than 25 years as secretary and was a member of the Washington Chapter No. 16, RAM of Machias, the Blanquefort Commandery of Ellsworth, and the Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor, the Washington County Shrine Club, the Shrine Flag Unit, the Old Town-Orono Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Valley of Bangor and Alcyone Chapter No. 71 OES of Milbridge. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 120 of Rangeley and a life member of VFW Post No. 4917 of Brewer. Dick was also active with other community services as a Boy Scout leader where he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service to scouting, as an EMT with Petit Manan Ambulance Corps, and as a trustee of the Milbridge Water District.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Olive (Donahue) Bradbury of Milbridge; five children, Douglas and his wife, Barbara, of Oxford, Michael of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Jean of Milbridge, Joanne DiDonna and her husband, Arthur, of Wilton and Rick and his wife, Nancy, of Bradley; six grandchildren, Angie, Amy and Nicholas DiDonna and Crystal Bradbury, Matt Shirland and Seth Richard Bradbury; two brothers, Charles of LaBelle, Fla., and Mahlon of Brunswick; five sisters, Patricia Pillsbury of Penobscot, Elizabeth Wagner of Tucson, Ariz., Norma Albee, Judy Hooper and Joan Archer, all of Franklin; many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held April 5, 2000, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Main Street, Milbridge, with the Rev. Robert Simon and the officers and brethren of Pleiades Lodge officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
Vivian Lee (Heath) Carter
BUCKSPORT - Vivian Lee (Heath) Carter, 92, died April 16, 2000. She was born Sept. 22, 1907, in Penobscot, the daughter of Charles W. and Frankie (Brown) Heath.
Vivian attended the Methodist church and was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Rebekahs, and a 75-year member of the Floral Grange No. 158 of North Bucksport. She loved to play beano and enjoyed knitting; she knit well over 100 sweaters which she most often gave as gifts.
She is survived by one son, Parker Carter and wife, Beverly (Plant) of Bucksport; three grandchildren, Melvin Carter and fiancee, Julie Puckett, Victoria Perry and husband, Richard, and Penny Carter, all of Bucksport; two sisters, Clara Wight of Bucksport, Thelma Towle of Canada; one brother, Lawrence Heath and wife, Vivian of Florida; several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, C. Ora Carter in 1978; one sister, Goldie Lydick.
A funeral service was held April 19, 2000, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 14 Elm St., Bucksport, with the Rev. Peter Remick officiating. Interment was in Birch Grove Cemetery, West Ellsworth. Donations in her memory may be made to the Bucksport Floral Grange.
Paul K. McCann
SURRY - Paul K. McCann, 71, died April 10, 2000, at Sonogee Rehabilitation Center, Bar Harbor, after a courageous 14-year battle with cancer. He was born June 18, 1928, in Boston, Mass., the son of George and Madeline (Whitter) McCann. He was a graduate of Cony High School in Augusta.
Paul retired as manager of public affairs of Great Northern Paper Co. in 1987. He spent more than 40 years in journalism, government and business in Maine.
From 1942-1964 Paul filled many positions at the Kennebec Journal in Augusta. He served as president of the Maine Associated Press News Editors Association and was active in the New England Associated Press Editors Association.
He served on active duty with the Air National Guard in 1951-1952. From 1964-1971, he was a public relations supervisor and community cleanup campaign coordinator with state agencies. He was a former chairman of the planning board in Winthrop and active on the board when zoning was adopted in 1972.
Paul joined Great Northern Paper Co. as public relations representative in Millinocket. During the 1970s and 1980s, he was responsible for government relations, advertising, and public relations. He was a past president of the Paper Industry Information Office and was a former director of Associated Industries of Maine, the Maine Forest Products Council and the Maine Council on Economic Education and other groups. Paul served for a time as chairman of the state Commission on Ethics and four terms as a member of the state Compensation Commission.
In retirement since 1987 in Surry, he served as president of the Surry Community Improvement Association and in 1995 was honored by the SCIA for his contributions to the community. He was past president of the Surry Garden Club. In 1991, he qualified as a Master Gardener in a program of Cooperative Extension of the University of Maine. He was a participant in the "Lunch Bunch" of Blue Hill. He was author of a book published in 1994, "Timber! The Fall of Maine’s Paper Giant," a chronicle of Great Northern Paper Co. in the 1970s and 1980s.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jean (Spearin) McCann of Surry; one daughter, Paula McCann Weber and her husband, Scott, of Augusta; a granddaughter, Victoria Weber of Augusta; one sister, Jean McCann Larkin of Augusta; nephews, Glen Lee Larkin of Greene and Scot Larkin of Portland; his stepmother, Isobel McCann of Windham; and an aunt, Barbara Gifford of New York.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 12, 2000, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Leo James Michaud presiding. Interment will be in Wall Cemetery, Augusta. Bruce S. deNagy
WILMINGTON, DEL. - Bruce S. deNagy, 72, died on Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at his residence in Wilmington. Del.
Mr. deNagy was an Air Force veteran. He was a 1951 graduate of Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn., and earned a master’s degree in 1960 from the University of Pennsylvania. He had a 36-year career in education holding a variety of positions, retiring in 1991 from the Red Clay Consolidated School District. In his life he was busy with many activities including the Sons of the American Revolution, PTA, Sunday school teacher, Democratic committee person and various other organizations.
He enjoyed writing, genealogy, golf and traveling among a variety of other interests.
His wife of 36 years, Doris deNagy, passed away in 1989. Bruce’s father-in-law, J. Roy Barrette of Brooklin, passed away in 1995. His mother-in-law, Helen Barrette, resides at Amen Farm in Brooklin. He is survived by his son, David B. deNagy of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and daughters, Carolyn (Cali) Rodichok of Bear, Del., and Donna L. Dougherty of Wilmington, Del.; five grandchildren and two brothers, Hugh deNagy of Littleton, Colo., and Donald deNagy of Simsbury, Conn.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 7, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, Wilmington. Helen (Gumpper) Holt Barrette
BROOKLIN - Helen (Gumpper) Holt Barrette died April 13, 2000, at her home, Amen Farm. She was born in Philadelphia on May 19, 1906. Her father died before she was 5 years old and she was raised by her mother along with a sister and brother.
She married Joseph W. Holt in New York in 1927 and had two children, born in 1930 and 1931. Upon her husband’s death in 1944, she was employed by Parker and Co., a pioneer
aviation brokerage firm in Philadelphia and became the treasurer. At Parker, she met most of the early
aviation pioneers, including Edward Rickenbacker and Charles Lindbergh. As broker for Pan American Airways, she traveled throughout Latin America, and handled the accounts of 18 airlines, most of them spinoffs of Pan Am and government-owned airlines.
Upon Parker’s death in 1948, she married his partner, J. Roy W. Barrette and retired with him to Maine in 1955. Together they bought an 80-acre farm on Naskeag Point and refurbished and rebuilt a Cape Cod house and resuscitated a small farm. She was an active member of the school board, the Brooklin Garden Club and Four Town Nursing Association and helped her husband landscape approximately three acres of ornamental gardens.
She is survived by her son, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A private service was held April 19, 2000, at Beth Eden Cemetery, Naskeag. A memorial service will be held at the Blue Hill Congregational Church in June, date to be announced.

Frank H. Conway
NEEDHAM, MASS. - Frank H. Conway, 86, co-chairman of the Reagan-Bush campaigns in Massachusetts in 1980 and 1984, the first Republican presidential victories in Massachusetts since Eisenhower in 1956, died Wednesday morning, April 5, 2000, at North Hill Retirement Home in Needham. He was 86.
President Reagan appointed Mr. Conway to head the Federal Advisory Committee for Massachusetts, and then nominated him as a commissioner on the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission of the United States in Washington, D.C. Confirmed by the U.S. Senate, he served until November 1994, the longest period of service of any commissioner in the history of the commission.
Mr. Conway was born in Providence, R.I., on May 2, 1913, graduating from LaSalle Academy, Providence College, and Boston University Law School. He was a former president of the Boston Club of Providence College and served on the Honorary Degrees Committee for the college. His career with New England Telephone and Telegraph was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1946, lastly as a major assisted to the Fourth Army General Staff. Returning from military service, he held numerous management positions with NYNEX, attending a special program at Harvard Law School 1952-1953. Upon his retirement, Mr. Conway practiced law in Boston and was later associated with the law firm of Locke Fullerton & Lundwall in Wellesley. He was a summer resident of Sorrento and an avid golfer.
Mr. Conway had a deep, enduring interest in politics, first as a member of the Young Men’s Republican Club of Boston, serving as its treasurer and member of the Ways and Means Committee, then as chairman of the Wellesley Town Committee, and as a member and treasurer of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee, and delegate to the Republican National Conventions of 1976, 1980, 1984, and 1988, and numerous State Republican Conventions. He was active in the Town of Wellesley, serving as a member of the Board of Selectmen, the Advisory Committee, the Personnel Board and the Town Meeting. He was also a member of the Wellesley Kiwanis Club, the Wellesley Country Club, Harvard Club of Boston, and former president of the Middlesex Club, the oldest Republican club in the United States. Mr. Conway was also president of the Wellesley Club during its centennial year, and chairman of the Board of Selectmen of Wellesley during that town’s centennial celebrations.
He leaves his wife, Elizabeth (Chafee) Conway and four stepchildren, Arthur C. Lee of Weston, Mass., Sherrill Rosoff of Rosemont, Pa., William Jed Lee of Egan, Minn., and Henry C. Lee of Short Hills, N.J.; a sister, Patricia C. Whalen of Natick, Mass.; nine grandchildren, two nieces, four nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass was held at St. Paul’s Parish in Wellesley on April 10, 2000. Private Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley. Bernice Espling
HANCOCK - Bernice Espling, 75, died after living independently with a three-year struggle with breast cancer. This struggle ended Oct. 29, 1999, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient since Oct. 20. Because of her love for her children and grandchildren, she remained hopeful that she would overcome this. She will be sadly missed.
She was born in Stockholm, Aug. 12, 1924, the daughter of Alfred Babkirk and Flavie St. Pierre. She attended St. Agatha-Our Lady of Wisdom School and Caribou High School. She served in the Women’s Army Corp in World War II.
She is survived by two daughters, Lorraine St. Pierre and Susan Tewell, both of Ellsworth; one son, Lenny and his wife, Vicki, of Machias; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Cora Moreau of Lewiston and New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Gladys Cote of Portage Lake and Edgewater, Fla.; two brothers, Rosaire Marquis of Tennyville, Conn., and Bronson, Fla., Herbert Babkirk of Windsor Locks, Conn. Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Herbert Espling; two daughters, Elaine and Karen; one son, Vinal; four brothers, Henry, Leonard and Gerald Marquis, and Clifford Babkirk.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 3, 1999, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, High Street, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Jim Michaud presiding. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
Jack Harley Rosebrook
SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Jack Harley Rosebrook, 74, died Nov. 3, 1999, in Southwest Harbor. He was born Aug. 2, 1925, on Big Cranberry Island, the son of Willard G. and Vivian C. (Young) Rosebrook Gray.
Jack was a lobsterman for many years. He was a part-time cook on various draggers and possessed a license to deliver boats, which he did all down the coast.
Jack was married to Dorothy A. (Abel) of Milton, Mass., and fathered six children, Pat Lewis of Bangor, Regina A. Gray of Colorado, Gail D. Kniffen of Missouri, Monica L. Eaton of Ellsworth, Doreen M. Borden of New Hampshire, and Gil B. Rosebrook of Windham. Jack is also survived by two sisters, Marilyn Parkinson of Lamoine and Charlotte Campbell of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Marion Saunders Carter
ELLSWORTH - Marion Saunders Carter, 86, died Nov. 13, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born in Blue Hill, May 8, 1913, the daughter of the late Laurence H. and Viola (Gray) Carter.
She was a member of the Union Congregational Church of Ellsworth Falls and a choir member for several years. She was a member of the Isaac E. Clewley VFW Post 4917 Auxiliary of Brewer until she transferred to the Ellsworth Post No. 109 Auxiliary in 1965. She was past member of the Blue Hill Mountain Rebekah Lodge No. 87.
Marion was devoted to her family and is survived by her devoted son, Walter J. Saunders Sr. and his wife, Jackie, of Ellsworth; two grandsons, Walter J. Saunders Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Blue Hill and Bradley J. Saunders and his wife, Robyn, of Surry; a granddaughter, Theresa Clark of Ellsworth; a great-grandson, Christopher James Saunders of Blue Hill; a devoted sister, Elsie A. Gould and her husband, Richard, of Brooklin; two brothers, Linwood L. Carter and his wife, Geraldine, and Gordon F. Carter and wife, Edna, all of Blue Hill; two brothers-in-law, Gordon G. Carter and his wife, Corinne, of Surry and Gailen Carter and his wife, Sibyl, of Georgia; a special cousin and best friend, Barbara Tuozzo of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a special niece, Nannette Lake of Augusta; many other nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved very much. She will be remembered by a wonderful and precious friend, Paula Allen of Blue Hill, who had been like a granddaughter. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Willard E. Carter in 1993; a brother, Pearl H. Carter and his wife, Marilyn; two brothers-in-law, Jarvis V. Carter and James E. Carter; and her first husband, Elmore F. Saunders. She and her husband, Willard, will also be remembered for their special feline friend and constant companion, Mittie, who was loved greatly by them both.
A funeral service was held Nov. 16, 1999, at the Union Congregational Church, Ellsworth Falls, with the Rev. Pat Butler officiating. Interment was at the Village Cemetery, Surry. Ruth Irene Siebert
ELGIN, S.C. - Ruth Irene Siebert, 71, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, in a Columbia, S.C., hospital.
Mrs. Siebert was born in Brookfield, Mo., to the late Loyal Hood and Margaret Irene McDermand. In 1951 she married Orville T. Siebert in Kansas City, Kan., and was predeceased by him in 1986.
Mrs. Siebert retired in 1992 from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She was a member of Waco Assembly No. 199 Social Order of the Beauceant and the Robinson Drive United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her four children, Loyal T. (Tom) Siebert of Waco, Texas, Gerald L. (Jed) Siebert of Sedgwick, Candace I. Freeman of Stuttgart, Ark., and Linda A. Landy of Elgin, S.C.; sister, Kay Mason of Liberty, Mo.; brother, Ted McDermand of Longview, Texas; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date in Maine.
The family has designated the American Stroke Association or the American Heart Association for memorials.
Dorothy "Dot" Cousins Gray
CAPE ROSIER - Dorothy "Dot" Cousins Gray, 67, passed away peacefully Oct. 30, 1999, after a short illness, surrounded by her family at a Bangor hospital. She was born April 28, 1932, at her homestead in Cape Rosier, the daughter of Alvin and Mona (Ladd) Cousins.
Dot was a 53-year member of the Cape Rosier Grange. She enjoyed her farm animals, gardening and her friends and co-workers at Hiram Blake Camps. She will be sadly missed by family, friends, and the Gray Farm pet menagerie.
She is survived by three daughters, Stormi and her husband, Dan Wentworth, of Verona, Sami and her husband, Jim Bates, of Mississippi, Sue and her husband, Jamie Wentworth, of Verona; grandchildren, Andrew, Peter and Cameron Wentworth, Jamie and Cassie Bates; a sister, Rachel and her husband, Keith Snow, of Cape Rosier; many nieces and nephews. Dot was predeceased by a very special friend, Forrest Tyson.
A graveside funeral service was held Nov. 2, 1999, at Evergreen Cemetery, Cape Rosier. Edwin G. Hooper
EAST SULLIVAN - Edwin G. Hooper, 70, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born in Franklin, April 13, 1929, the son of Walter M. and Amelia V. (Scammons) Hooper.
Edwin served in the Army during the Korean War. He was employed by Stinson’s Cannery for many years, and also at the Maine Central Railroad.
Edwin is survived by his wife. Linda H. Hooper of East Sullivan; seven children, Mary Hooper of Orland, Edora Lewis of Ellsworth, George Hooper of Gouldsboro, Rose Potter of Hancock, Douglas Hooper of Gouldsboro, Michelle Hooper of East Sullivan, and Jamie Hooper of Rockland; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Kermit Hooper of Maryland; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Chester Hooper.

Arlene I. (Owens) Astbury
BLUE HILL - Arlene I. (Owens) Astbury, 73, died peacefully at her residence in Blue Hill on Nov. 14, 1999, after a brief struggle with cancer. She was born in Blue Hill, Jan. 8, 1926, the daughter of the late William and Addie Owens.
She graduated from George Stevens Academy in 1943 and attended two years of college at Bangor School of Commerce. She worked for many years for Bangor Hydro Electric Co., before becoming a housewife. In her later years she enjoyed her time with all of her beano friends, especially Louise Nevells and Dorothy Davis of Blue Hill.
She was predeceased by her husband, Philip Astbury, in 1985. She is survived by a sister, Olive Varnum of Sedgwick; her son, Thomas E. Astbury of Blue Hill; daughters, Carol Bakeman of Brooksville and Ramona Young of Sedgwick; also nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside ceremony will be held at the Seaside cemetery in Blue Hill on Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at 2 p.m. Donations in her memory can be made to the Hancock County Hospice Care and Hancock County HomeCare.
