Daniel Somes Smith
SOMESVILLE - Daniel Somes Smith, 88, died Jan. 26, 2000, in Somesville. He was born Nov. 2, 1911, in Somesville, the son of Hollis and Georgia (Somes) Smith.
Daniel was a member of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church in Town Hill and a former member of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Tacoma, Wash. Daniel enjoyed writing for fun. He was a wonderful poet and wrote a book of poetry, as well as writing Fin and Feather short stories. Daniel loved to fish and hunt and he was a great reader, especially Westerns.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Rosemary (Higgins) Smith; two sons, Norris Smith and wife, Donna, of Bremerton, Wash., and Jeffrey Smith and friend, Sue, of Keizer, Ore.; two daughters, Denice Fenno and husband, Lincoln, of Bar Harbor and Sandra Smith of Tacoma, Wash.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A service of remembrance was held Jan. 29, 2000, at the Pentecostal Lighthouse in Town Hill, with Pastor John Churchill officiating. Spring Interment will be at Brookside Cemetery, Mount Desert. Bruce Wayne Freeman
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Bruce Wayne Freeman, 43, of 5404 Beretta Way, Wilmington, N.C., died Jan. 19, 2000, at his residence. He was born in Bremerhaven, Germany, on May 18, 1956. He was the son of Robert and Beverly Cunningham Frazier of Bar Harbor.
Mr. Freeman was a clinical educator for respiratory care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a registered respiratory therapist at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and was working on research for premature infants. The family said the focus of his life was his wife, Christine, and daughter, Morgan. Whether on Masonboro Island or in Bar Harbor, he was always at home near the water, they said.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Christine Freeman, and his daughter, Morgan Freeman, both of Wilmington; a brother, Steven Freeman and wife, Justine, of Scarborough; his sister, Kathy Conlogue and her husband, John, of Rockland; his grandmother, Blanche Cunningham of Bar Harbor; and his many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate his life was held in Wilmington. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at St. Saviour’s Church, Bar Harbor. Muriel DaCorte
BAR HARBOR - Muriel DaCorte, 71, died Jan. 26, 2000, at a Bar Harbor health-care facility after a brief illness. She was born May 25, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of John and Geraldine (Huntley) Nelson.
Muriel worked at the Jackson Laboratory for many years where she was a member of the Professional Secretaries International. She belonged to the Head of the Harbor Church in Bass Harbor where she taught Sunday school for several years. She volunteered for the YMCA and many other charitable organizations. She was an officer of the Tremont Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Tremont Historical Society. She took part in the annual loon count at Somes Pond each year. Muriel’s main joys in life were her family and friends. She also found much enjoyment in tole painting, gardening, history, genealogy and her cats.
She is survived by her two sons, Terry Musson of Bernard and John DaCorte of Mount Desert, and one daughter, Linda Kopf of Northampton, Mass., and their spouses. She is also survived by one sister, June Shea of Chelsea; four grandchildren, Noel and Jeremy Musson, Sasha Kopf and Lydia DaCorte; and a niece, Tamara Jetton of Binghampton, N.Y.
A memorial service was held Jan. 28, 2000, at Fernald Funeral Chapel in Somesville, with the Rev. Wayne Buchanan officiating. Spring Interment will be at Head of the Harbor Cemetery, Bass Harbor. Chester Edwin "Brownie" Brown Jr.
HANCOCK - Chester Edwin "Brownie" Brown Jr., 64, died Nov. 29, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born Oct. 14, 1935, in Hancock, the son of Hester (Gordon) and Chester Edwin Brown Sr.
Brownie loved camping, fishing and tinkering in his garage. He was a Town of Hancock selectman for 13 years, was a past fire chief of the Hancock Fire Department and served eight years on the Hancock School Board. He worked selling tires for C.E. Noyes, Riley Tires, and Stratham Tire for more than 30 years.
He was a member of the David Hooper Masonic Lodge No. 201 of Sullivan, Acadia Chapter and Blanquefort Commandery of Ellsworth, and Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor. He was a long-standing member of the Anah Lobster Boat unit where he was captain for several years. He attended the East Side Baptist Church.
He is survived by his mother, Hester Brown of Hancock; his beloved wife of 12 years, Patty (Paganucci) Brown of Hancock; two sons, Scott Brown and his wife, Wendy, and Alan Brown and his wife, Stacie, all of Hancock; one daughter, Cindy Crowley and her husband, Bruce, of Corea; two stepsons, Barry Young and his wife, Sue, of West Buxton and Kip Young and his wife, Missy, of Corea; five grandchildren, Ricky, Jeff, Michelle, Amy and Justin; six stepgrandchildren, Natasha, Leo, Michael, Chelsea, Aaron and Emily; two nephews and one niece; several cousins. He was predeceased by his dog, "Odie."
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Union Congregational Church, Hancock, with Pastor Michael Page officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Hancock. Thomas Charles Spring
NEW LONDON, CONN. and ELLSWORTH - Thomas Charles Spring, 51, died unexpectedly Dec. 5, 1999, in Ellsworth. He was born July 7, 1948, in New London, Conn., the third child of G.B. and Dorothy (Beal) Spring II.
Tom had resided in Florida for many years and served in the U.S. Marines, stationed in Guam. He moved to Ellsworth in August to be near his family. Tom was the beloved son of Dorothy Jones and his stepfather of 40 years, Wendell R. Jones, of Ellsworth. His son, Thomas Kenneth, currently serves in the U.S. Navy, stationed at San Diego, Calif., and is working toward a college degree.
His surviving family includes a sister, Mary Jane (Spring) Brush and brother-in-law, Alan H. Brush, of Mystic, Conn.; two brothers, George Benjamin Spring III of Chester, Conn., William "Bill" Andrew Spring (his best friend) of Ellsworth; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. His father, George B. Spring II, predeceased him.
A graveside service will be held at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth, Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at 10 a.m. Pastors Floyd Flynn and Lewis Cushman will lead the services. Remembrances may be sent to the Unionville Church of God, Steuben, ME 04680.
Bernice E. Carter
SURRY - Bernice E. Carter, 87, wife of the late George D. Carter, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born in Sedgwick, June 27, 1912, the daughter of Howard O. and Olive (Black) Taylor.
Bernice was a member of the RLDS Church in Ellsworth. For many years, she was a nurse at Hurley Hospital in Ellsworth, also at Royal Nursing Home in Ellsworth, and the Ellsworth hospital. Bernice was also a private duty nurse in the Ellsworth and Surry area. She was an avid crocheter, and shared her fine afghans with many people.
Bernice is survived by three children, Corrine and her husband, Gordon G. Carter, of Surry, Geraldine S. Carter of East Orland, and Donald H. Carter and his wife, Wanda, of Surry; a foster daughter, Lorraine A. and her husband, Virgil, of Ellsworth; 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Lorado Carter and his wife, Ellen, of Surry; a sister, Lura Candage and her husband, Douglas, of Surry; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her stepfather, Albert Carter, whom she treated as her own father; a sister, Hilda Lynk; a brother, Roland Taylor; two half-brothers, Freeman and Lawrence Carter.
A funeral service was held Dec. 12, 1999, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with Elder K.C. Conner officiating. Private Interment was at Cunningham Ridge Cemetery, Surry. Gifts in memory of Bernice may be sent to the charity of one’s choice.
Ralph B. Jordan Jr.
WALTHAM - Ralph B. Jordan Jr., 69, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born in Waltham, Dec. 13, 1930, the son of Ralph B. and Edna D. (Harriman) Jordan Sr.
Ralph was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Air Force. He worked for many years as a meat cutter in area stores. He was actively involved with the 4-H clubs, having served as president of the Hancock County 4-H Leader’s Association, and was leader of the Honest Worker’s 4-H Club of Waltham. Ralph had been a member of the Eastbrook Baptist Church since 1989.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Beatrice L. (Walker) Jordan of Waltham; two children, Sheldon and his wife, Velma, of Waltham, and Terri Jordan and her partner, Calvin Anderson, of Branch Pond; four grandchildren, Lauralee Jordan, Shellee Jordan, Sheldon Lee Jordan II, and Daisy Lee Jordan; one great-grandson, Jordan Rivera; a sister, Marguerite Bunker and her husband, George, of Franklin; two sisters-in-law, Marguerite Hamor and her husband, Harry, of Virginia, and Juanita Wilbur and her husband, Irving, of Waltham; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ralph was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Jordan.
A funeral service was held Dec. 22, 1999, at the Eastbrook Baptist Church, Rt. 200, Eastbrook, with the Rev. Terry Phillips officiating. Interment was at the Hillside Cemetery, Waltham. Pluma Tracy Backman
WINTER HARBOR - Pluma Tracy Backman, 88, died at the home of her daughter in Winter Harbor, Dec. 27, 1999, after a long illness. She was born July 19, 1911, in Cherryfield, the daughter of Walter H. and Eva (Oaks) Tracy.
After graduating from Cherryfield Academy in 1928, she attended Washington State Normal School at Machias. After marriage and raising two daughters, Eva R. Parritt and Nancy R. Gerrish, she decided to go back to school. She graduated from UMO with a BS degree in education in 1970. Pluma taught school in Otis, Steuben, Winterport, Lamoine and Winter Harbor. Because of ill health she had to retire early. During her teaching in Winter Harbor, five grandchildren were her students; they were Pamela, Bonny and Allen Gerrish, Donnie III and Rebecca Backman. She was a member of the Cherryfield Baptist Church and superintendent of the Sunday School at the Winter Harbor Baptist Church for many years. While there, she was active with the youth groups, VBS, choir and served as church clerk and treasurer. Following retirement, she did substitute teaching work at Gouldsboro Elementary School.
She is survived by a beloved daughter, Nancy R. Gerrish and her husband, Hiram; very special grandchildren, Robert Parritt Jr. and his wife, Sharon, of Windham, Tracy Ann Noyes and her husband, Kevin, of Naples, Nan Marie Pepin and her husband, Ray, of Hiram, Rebecca Backman of Gouldsboro, Pamela Gerrish and her husband, Bob, of Ellsworth, Bonny Gerrish of Winter Harbor and Kevin Gerrish of Saco and Cindy Vandegrift of Winter Harbor; a stepdaughter-in-law, Leah Backman and stepgranddaughter, Kristina Sproul of Cherryfield; 15 very special great-grandchildren. She will also be remembered by Gary Ray, whom she treated as another grandson and who called her "Nana B," as did all her family and all who knew her. Pluma was predeceased by her husband, Donald, in 1995; a beloved daughter, Eva R. Parritt; two beloved grandsons, Donnie L. Backman III of Gouldsboro and Allen Michael Gerrish of Winter Harbor; two stepsons, Lyle Backman and Donald L. Backman Jr., who was like a son to her for 42 years; four sisters, Hilda, Flora, Lavina and Loretta; two brothers, Aaron and Norman.
Because of her wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge. Lawrence Carl Young
PASADENA, TEXAS - Lawrence Carl Young, 64, born Feb. 5, 1935, in Bangor, died Nov. 10, 1999, in Pasadena. He was a graduate of Citizen’s Police Academy Class No. 8, a member of Archives Lodge No. 1399, AF & AM, and a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in the Korean Conflict.
Lawrence is survived by a loving family: wife, Janice Young; sons, Lawrence C. Young Jr. and wife, Sherry, Michael R. Young and wife, Lisa; daughters, Karen R. Holleman and husband, Larry, Tammie M. Gabbert and husband, Scott; two brothers, Albert Young and Jimmy Young; two sisters, Shirley Craig and Jackie Albers; nine grandchildren; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Thelma H. Johnson
CHERRYFIELD and GOULDSBORO - Thelma H. Johnson, 70, died following a long illness, at her home in Cherryfield, surrounded by her family, Dec. 6, 1999. She was born at Gouldsboro, Feb. 13, 1929, the daughter of Clarence and Lydia (Young) Haycock.
She was a member of the Steuben Congregation of the Jehovah’s Witness for many years.
Thelma is survived by her children, Arlene and her husband, Harold Robinson, of Hermon, Deborah and her husband, Earl Sassaman, of Cherryfield, Barry Johnson of Jonesport, Peter Johnson and his wife, Elaine, of Burnham and Dale Johnson of Bangor; four stepchildren who were treated like her own, Alice Vance of Gouldsboro, Maxine and her husband, Edward Stanley, of Gouldsboro, Lottie and her husband, Earle Cowperthwaite, of Prospect Harbor and Lewis and his wife, Merrilene Johnson, of Cherryfield; two sisters, Gertrude and her husband, Walter Harrington, of Winter Harbor and Jean and her husband, Robert Noiles, of Grand Junction, Colo.; two brothers, John Haycock and his wife, Jane, of Birch Harbor and Everett Haycock and his wife, Donna, of Gouldsboro; a sister-in-law, Elise Haycock of Gouldsboro; a special granddaughter who helped with her care, Nichole Sassaman of Cherryfield; many grandchildren, stepgrandchildren and several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Many friends and two special friends who helped greatly in her care, Myron and Betty Leighton, will also remember her. She was predeceased by her husband, Shirley, in 1970; two sons, Clarence in 1977 and Lawrence in 1956; and one brother, Charles, in 1994.

Rosemary Lawler Theriault
SOUTHWEST HARBOR - Rosemary Lawler Theriault, 78, died Dec. 7, 1999, at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born July 30, 1921, in Southwest Harbor, the daughter of Christopher and Annie (Coffey) Lawler. Rosemary taught school in Rhode Island and Maine for 45 years. She was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Manset, Maine Teachers Associations and the North Kingston, R.I., Teacher Association.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo Dempsey of Brewer; and two brothers, William "Bill" Lawler and his wife, Donna, of Brewer and Joseph "Joe" Lawler and his wife, Mary, of Palmyra; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Rhonda and Aaron Morneault. Rosemary was predeceased by her husband, Eugene C. Theriault, in 1996.
A funeral service was held Dec. 11, 1999, at St. Peters Catholic Church, Manset, with Fr. Joseph Daniels officiating. Interment was at Mt. Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. Dorothy "Dottie" Pauline Smith
CHILLICOTHE, MO. - Dorothy "Dottie" Pauline Smith, 74, of Chillicothe, Mo., died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City. She was born April 17, 1925, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Francis and Eva (Carter) Tilden.
Mrs. Smith graduated from Ellsworth High School and Boston College of Dunn Memorial in Boston, Mass., with a degree in accounting and secretarial sciences. She was a homemaker and taught piano lessons for more than 20 years in Brookfield and Chillicothe.
Survivors include her husband, Marshall Smith of Chillicothe; a daughter and son-in-law, Marshallyn and Ashwin Shah of Houston, Texas, and a son and daughter-in-law, Mark J. and Beverly Smith of Washington, D.C.
M. Elizabeth Cummings Allen
ELLSWORTH - M. Elizabeth Cummings Allen, 91, of Ellsworth, died at her home, Dec. 28, 1999, after six years of failing health. She was born in Melrose, Mass., Dec. 9, 1908, the middle daughter of Allen and Emma (Ingerson) Cummings.
During her youth in Melrose, she was active in the local "Y" as a member of their successful swim team. She was graduated from Melrose High School, in the Class of 1926, and the Boston Cooking School. In 1930, she married Thurston Allen of North Sedgwick and Melrose. The couple with their young family, moved to Ellsworth in 1934. They became the third family to live in one of Ellsworth’s oldest remaining homes. Originally known as the Hale house, and next as the King house, it then became the Allen’s. There she devoted her early years of marriage to the raising and well-being of her growing family. Elizabeth’s long life in Ellsworth (65 years) produced many memorable gatherings of friends and family often including her hearty meals accompanied by wonderful homemade breads and delicious desserts. She was a member of the WESO Club, the Eastern Star, Lioness Club, and the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, R. Thurston Allen in 1985; her grandson, Matthew S. Allen in 1993; her two sisters, Helen C. Hodgkins of Sandwich, Mass., and Ruth C. Allen of North Sedgwick. She is survived by her four children, George C. Allen and his wife, Beverly, of Trenton, Lorraine Allen Saunders and her husband, Joseph, of Southwest Harbor, Peter T. Allen and his wife, Carol, of Union, and Roy P. Allen II and his wife, Ardis, of Ellsworth. In addition to her children, she is survived by eight grandchildren, Gregory, Jason, Andrew, Brian and Petrea Allen, Kim Allen Wadman, Karen Allen Maguire and Sedgwick Saunders; and eight great-grandchildren. She was well and fondly cared for during her recent years of confinement by her caregivers, Rita L. Blair, Sandra L. Ashmore, Marilyn S. Garnett and Debbie Zerrien.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at the Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, North Sedgwick. Those who wish may donate in Elizabeth’s memory to the Down East Family YMCA, Attention Jean, State Street, Ellsworth 04605.
Anton "Bud" Jordan Jr.
EAST MARIAVILLE - Anton "Bud" Jordan Jr., 71, died Nov. 27, 1999, at his home in East Mariaville. He was born May 16, 1928, the son of Anton and Lucinda (Davis) Jordan Sr.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Anton R. Jordan III and Karen of Cordova, Tenn.; Kevin L. Jordan and Nancy of Belmont; a brother, Richard H. Jordan Sr. of Osborn; five grandchildren, Stacey, Trish, Kris, Kelly, Kory, and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service was held Nov. 30, 1999, at Aurora-Osborn cemetery with Pastor Rolf Hellum officiating. Arrangements by Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
Mildred E. Britton
NORTH ATTLEBORO, MASS. - Mildred E. Britton, 86, of Madonna Manor, North Attleboro, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at home. She was formerly of New York City and Chappaqua; she spent summers at her home in Winter Harbor, and winters in Whispering Pines, N.C.
Mrs. Britton was a homemaker. She enjoyed the seacoast environment, reading, golf, and travel.
Her husband, John F. Britton, was a career Air Force pilot, retiring as a colonel, and received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Born in New York City on Jan. 13, 1913, she was the daughter of Francis Patrick and Elizabeth Wolff Leddy. She graduated from Manhattanville College, Purchase, N.Y., Class of 1934.
She married John F. Britton on Feb. 24, 1944, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Mr. Britton died April 6, 1995.
Survivors include two sons, John F. Britton Jr., Laredo, Texas, and Bruce Britton, North Attleboro; five grandchildren, and one nephew, George Britton, Pawling, N.Y. She was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Plumb.
A funeral service was held Dec. 1, 1999, from St. John’s Church, Pawling. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Pawling.
James Byard Murray
FRANKLIN - James Byard Murray, 71, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, at his home in Franklin. He was born in West Newton, Mass., June 5, 1928, the son of James A. and Bonnie (Tollen) Murray.
James was a veteran of World War II, having served the Army drawing aerial maps for G2 division intelligence and also as a paratrooper. At the time of his death, Jim was self-employed as a commercial artist, designing and illustrating book covers for Simon and Schuster Publishing Co. Jim had many fond memories of coastal Maine from his childhood, and moved to the Ellsworth area in 1979 with his wife, Diane, and family to be near the ocean which he loved so much.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by nine children, Cathy Tetenman and her husband, Stan, of Auburn, Lee Murray and his wife, April, of Winthrop, Rebecca Murray-Littlefield and her husband, Alan, of Augusta, Sarah Lanford and her husband, Henry, of Bar Harbor, James C. Murray and his wife, Kaye, of Davenport, Fla., Jody Audet, Jill DuPerry and her husband, Paul, all of Waterville, Riva Ramirez and her husband, Rogelio, of Leesville, S.C., and Paula Rees and her husband, Russell, of Irmo, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Dennis Murray of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Peter Murray of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; three sisters, Patricia Maines and her husband, Thomas, of Waterville, Suzanne Albison and her husband, Stephen, of Augusta, and Deborah Remley and her husband, Jim, of Eufaula, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with the Rev. Jim Quinlan officiating. Olive Ann Tuplin Thomas Sakalowski
BOSTON, MASS. and ELLSWORTH - Olive Ann Tuplin Thomas Sakalowski, 69, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at an Ellsworth health-care facility. She was born July 13, 1930, at Lennox Island, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann (Peters) Tuplin. Olive was a member of the Micmac Nation of Prince Edward Island.
She is survived by three children, Margaret Griffin of Chelsea, Mass., Phyllis Thomas of London, Ontario, a son, Gordon Thomas and his wife, Lorna, of Hancock; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Basil Tuplin and his wife, Eliza, of Mystic, Conn., and Graham Tuplin of Prince Edward Island; four sisters, Grace Nelson, Eleanor Taylor, Marcia McLeod, all of Prince Edward Island, and Eva and her husband, Holmes Briggs, of South Gouldsboro; a special niece, Phyllis Peterson of Hudson, N.H.; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by two husbands, Frederick Patrick Thomas and Joseph Sakalowski; a daughter, Elizabeth Kulagowski, and a grandson, Joseph Thomas.
A service was held Dec. 13, 1999, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
