Clayton Albert Fulton
PROSPECT HARBOR - Clayton Albert Fulton, 88, departed this life to enter the presence of the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000. He had been in declining health for the last few years with congestive heart failure.
Clayton was born on Nov. 30, 1911, in Houlton, the son of John Herbert and Edith Perkins Fulton. Early in his teen years his family moved to Watertown, Mass., where they lived for about three years. During this time, his father died when there was an influenza epidemic. Clayton and his mother moved to Monticello and then back to Houlton. While he was still a teenager, his mother died of peritonitis. Clayton’s parents taught him the truths of the Bible and he had fond memories of walking with his parents to attend church and Sunday school each week. At an early age Clayton realized that each of us is separated from God and that only through Jesus Christ can we be reconciled to God. He invited Jesus Christ to take control of his life and acknowledged Him as Savior and Lord. After moving back to Houlton, Clayton took some courses at Ricker Junior College and worked for five years at the Haley Music Co. doing sales and service. He and a friend, Harold Hughes, then started their own business, "Fulton & Hughes Radio Services," which they ran for two years. During this time, Clayton was a member of the gospel team referred to as "the Duke, the Baron, and the Ambassador." Clayton was "the Ambassador" and did the preaching, Harold Hughes was "the Baron" and was the song leader and played the violin and guitar, and Albert Wakefield was "the Duke" and played the piano and organ. Clayton also preached at a church in Ludlow Station for about three years, assisted by Harold and Albert. Clayton felt the Lord was calling him to full-time Christian service as a minister, so he sold everything he owned and left the radio business to attend Bible school. He enrolled in the Providence Bible Institute, Providence, R.I. While in Bible school, each summer he preached at a church in Wytopitlock. During his second and third years of Bible school, he preached on Sundays at the Swansea Friends Meeting House in Swansea, Mass. It was during his years at Bible school that Clayton had his first experience with radio broadcasting. He had a number of opportunities to preach via radio and gained a great interest in this area of ministry. In 1941 he graduated from Providence Bible Institute and moved to Winter Harbor, where he was pastor of the Baptist church from 1941 to 1943. On Nov. 3, 1943, Clayton married Annona Evelyn Coombs, whom he had met at Bible school. The couple moved to Hermitage, N.Y., where Clayton served as a pastor for 10 years. He then pastored in Cherry Creek, N.Y., for 2½ years. The family moved back to Maine and Clayton became the pastor of the Bean’s Corner Baptist Church in Jay from 1955 to 1977.
For several years during his pastorate at Bean’s Corner, he also pastored a church in New Vineyard and for a short time pastored a church in North Chesterville. For many years he had a radio broadcast called "Inspiration Time" Monday through Friday on WKTJ in Farmington. This program eventually became a weekly broadcast. With the support of the Bean’s Corner Baptist Church, Pastor Fulton maintained this weekly broadcast on Sundays at 8 a.m. until October 1999 when his health did not permit him to continue. He was very pleased that the current pastor at Bean’s Corner, Rev. Roger Nauss, consented to assume responsibility for this radio program.
In 1977 Pastor Fulton "retired" to Prospect Harbor, but soon was preaching again when he returned to the Winter Harbor Baptist Church as pastor. He preached there for about 10 years and then "retired" again. Within a couple of years he began preaching at the Corea Baptist Church in Corea, and continued to preach there until the end of 1999. In recent years, his grandson, Lenny Drake, assisted him as worship leader for the opening part of the services at Corea.
Clayton is survived by his four daughters, Jeannette France of Englewood, Colo., Edith Drake of Sullivan, Deborah Rowe of Jay and Christine Keene of Livermore Falls. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Lenny Drake, Shawna and Lincoln Keene, Jeff, Sharon, and Linda France, and a sister-in-law, Winifred Reynolds of Windsor, and her son, Lawrence Reynolds Jr. He was predeceased by his wife, who died in 1998, and by a daughter, Esther, who died as an infant.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth. The family would like to invite friends to join them at a memorial reception immediately following the service at the funeral home. Spring Interment will be at Birchland Cemetery, North Jay.
