JOHN N. ARNOLD
JOHN N. ARNOLD DOVER-FOXCROFT and CUMBERLAND FORESIDE - John N. Arnold, 61, died Nov. 21, 2001, at a Portland hospital. He was born June 11, 1940, in Bangor, the son of Malcolm C. and Arlene B. (Weed) Arnold. Having graduated from Foxcroft Academy, Class of 1959, and Bowdoin College, John was hired as Foxcroft Academy's English teacher/dramatic coach, in the fall of 1964. He taught at F.A. for the next 25 years, retiring in the spring of 1990. He served as dramatics coach for 15 years. His teaching duties ranged from English, to psychology, and social studies. For many years he served as the advisor of the American Field Service (A.F.S.). The 1990 edition of F.A.'s annual the Review, was dedicated to John by the student body, who remembered him "as a teacher and a friend". John often spoke nostalgically about his experiences with the one-act play festivals, the plays he directed, his casts, and crews. John was a globetrotter who traveled to several states, and as many countries, from Egypt to Iceland. He photographed many of the world's wonders, and was known to generously entertain a number of local civic groups with his slide shows and witty commentaries. His well-traveled background served him in good stead in the social studies classroom. A man with an expanded worldview, he was also very much at home seated among his dear friends over coffee at the counter of Peters' Pharmacy, or on the porch of his camp on Sebec Lake. In recent years he developed a profound interest in genealogy, and spent many hours tracing his family's history. John will always be fondly remembered by his students as an unorthodox and entertaining teacher; by his colleagues as an academic, a humorous storyteller, and a bit of a prankster; by those he knew and helped in Alcoholics Anonymous over the years as a friend and a powerful example; and by his friends as one of the most unforgettable characters one is ever likely to meet. Anyone who knew him has a story, or stories to tell.
He is survived by his uncle, Gilman Arnold of Spring Hill, Fla.; and his special friends and cousins, Bonnie Lee Nelson of Cumberland Foreside, Nicholas Hanson of Vermont, and Michael Bruni of Limington. He will be especially missed by his two dogs, Ferdi and Benjamin; and his special cat, ZaZa. Another dog, Alfie, who gave John great joy, predeceased him.
Friends are invited to call 1 p.m. until time of memorial service, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Kenneth Dale, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Rural Grove Cemetery.
