LESTER W. BITGOOD
ETNA - Lester W. Bitgood, 86, died unexpectedly May 9, 2001 at a Bangor hospital. He was born February 22, 1915 at Westerly, Rhode Island. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Lester was a member of the Masonic Order. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be remembered as a kind and loving family man.

He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn (Lang) Bitgood on December 23, 1997, and by a brother William. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Laureen of Etna; four grandchildren, Kim and her fiancée William Merrill of Stetson, Nicole and her boyfriend J.R. of Etna, Jamie and wife Michelle Bitgood of Madison, Chad Bitgood and fiancée Misty Butcher of Old Town; 7 great grandchildren, Katie, Kendrah, Willy, Zachary, Tricia, Cole and Austin.

Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Saturday, May 12th, 2001 at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 1 P.M. until the time of the funeral service. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Etna.

GEORGE EDWARD STAPLES
DEXTER, George Edward Staples, 79, died May 11, 2001 at a Dexter health care facility. He was born April 4, 1922 in Wellington, son of Milford and Edna (Staples) Bemis Sr.

He is survived by two brothers, Junior Bemis of Stetson and Jacob Bemis of Pittsfield; a sister, Florence Brazier of Skowhegan; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 9:30 AM Thursday, May 17, at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.

THOMAS E. LYFORD
GREENVILLE - Thomas E. Lyford, 58, husband of the late Jean (St. Georges) Lyford, died May 11, 2001, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing facility after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born Dec. 28, 1942, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Edwin B. and Pauline (McSorley) Lyford Jr. A U.S. Navy veteran, Tom and his family had lived in Franklin, Conn., where he had been employed as an environmental technician for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. After his retirement in 1997, he had moved to Greenville.

He is survived by his mother, Pauline Lyford of Dover-Foxcroft; a son, John T. Lyford of Turner Falls, Mass.; a brother, Richard E. Lyford and his wife, Mary Ann of Nokomis, Fla.; a sister, Donna (Lyford) Crane and her husband, Vernon R. of Dexter; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean, in 1997.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Maplewood Cemetery, Norwich, Conn. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Fellowship Hall, P.O. Box 6929, Greensboro, NC 27405. Local arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.

RALPH "PETER" F. SPRAGUE
STETSON - Ralph Francis Sprague, 33, died unexpectedly May 13, 2001 at his Mullen Road residence. He was born March 4, 1968 at Bangor the son of Carl and Kathleen (Allen) Sprague, Sr. He graduated from Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Bangor with a Degree in Electronics. He was also a certified welder and a certified motor vehicle inspector and mechanic. At the time of his death, he was employed at the Lemforder Corporation in Brewer. He was also a part-time security guard for Hall's Security at Eastern Fine Paper Company in Brewer. Peter will be remembered for his musical abilities. He was an exceptional guitarist and could play almost any stringed instrument. He enjoyed hunting and especially enjoyed fishing with his parents. He loved his daughters and treasured the time he was able to spend with them.

In addition to his parents of Stetson, he is survived by 2 daughters, Rachel and Denise Sprague, both of Skowhegan; 1 brother, Carl Sprague, Jr. of Stetson; 5 sisters, Debra Bartlett of Exeter, Patty Woodard of Pittsfield, Clarice Decker of Dexter, Charlene Eells and Rebecca Sprague, both of Stetson; many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 6-8 P.M. Monday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Tuesday, May 15th, with the Rev. David Ray officiating. Burial will be in Clark's Hill Cemetery, Stetson. Donations may be made in his name to assist the family with funeral expenses, in care of Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, ME 04953.

KENNETH A. PARSONS
GUILFORD, Kenneth A. Parsons, 85, died May 15, 2001, at a Greenville nursing home. He was born April 16, 1916 in Palmyra, son of Arthur and Iola (Boston) Parsons. He served in the US Navy and then worked for most of his life as a mason and as a farmer. He was a member of the Connor-Trafton American Legion Post #119 in Guilford.

He is survived by a sister, Victoria Giles of Cannan; close friends, Betty Tower and Ellie Sears both of Abbot; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 AM Friday at the Village cemetery in Abbot. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Guilford.

BERNARD EVERETT ALDEN JR
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Bernard Everett Alden Jr., 80, husband of Myrna L. (Spaulding) Alden, died un-expectedly May 14, 2001, in Bowerbank. He was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Foxcroft, the son of Bernard Sr. and Katheryn (Ireland) Alden. Barney loved the outdoors, spending many hours hunting, fishing and cutting wood. He was employed by Central Maine Power Co. for many years. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of Mosaic Masonic Lodge No. 52 AF & AM.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Myrna of Dover-Foxcroft; a brother, John W. Alden of Pittsfield; a sister, Rachel Alden of Bangor; a daughter, Pamela K. Alden of Spokane, Wash.; three stepsons, Timothy A. Dunn and Jeffrey K. Dunn, both of Saco, Christopher M. Dunn of Merrimack, N.H.; a stepdaughter, Karen Dunn Fraser of Kennebunk. Barney was greatly loved by his three daughters-in-law, his son-in-law, 11 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be private. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis, care of John Cushing, 9 Mechanic St., Dover-Foxcroft 04426. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.

DONALD E. CLUKEY
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Donald E. Clukey, 86, husband of the late Dorothy (Price) Clukey, died May 15, 2001, at a local hospital. He was born April 25, 1915, in Dexter, the son of Leo and Margaret M. (Wintle) Clukey. He attended local schools in Dexter, and served in the U.S. Army with the 3119th Signal Service Battalion during World War II, stationed in Kyoto, Japan. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. During his lifetime, he worked in various textile mills in the area, retiring from Guilford of Maine in 1980. Mr. Clukey was an avid sportsman, having bagged many a deer in his lifetime. He also enjoyed gardening and especially took pride in his tomatoes. He will be remembered for his quick wit, flashing smile, and his wonderful sense of humor.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Soileau and her husband, Burke of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a grandson, Randall Soileau of Dover-Foxcroft; two brothers-in-law, Elwin Pingree of Dover-Foxcroft, Joseph Guite of Portland; a sister-in-law, Lyda Clukey of Londonderry, N.H.; several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by a dear friend and companion, Rebecca McLaughlin of Skowhegan.

Graveside funeral services at the family lot in Rural Grove Cemetery, will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2001, with Fr. James Robichaud officiating. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Thomas Catholic Church, 45 High St., Dover-Foxcroft 04426. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.

HAROLD E. FRENCH
MONSON, Harold E. French, 78, died May 27, 2001 in Abbot. He was born May 24, 1923 in Abbot, son of Frank and Marguerite (Bickford) French. He served in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater. While in the Army he contracted Polio and was disabled for the rest of his life. For many years he drove the school bus and loved his association with the kids as he drove them to their various activities. He had a great love for animals and enjoyed his home on Lake Hebron.

He is survived by his wife, Althea (Haggstrom) French of Monson; his mother of Guilford; a son and his wife, James and Sherry French of Guilford; a daughter Nancy Taylor of Dover-Foxcroft; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, Julie and her husband Ed and their son, Gannon all of Presque Isle, James E. and his wife Kristen of Guilford, Kristen and her friend, Stefan of Park City, Utah, Laura L. and her friend Barry of Randolph, Mass., Daniel and Rosa and daughter, Tianna all of Sebec; a step grandson, Jerod Edes of Guilford; a niece; several nephews; special family members, Paul and Joyce Allen of Monson. He was predeceased by a son, Daniel Elwin French.

Friends may call 6-8 PM Wednesday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 21 Oak St., Guilford. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Daryl Witmer officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside cemetery in Monson. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the Animal Shelter at Sherman's Veterinarian Service, P.O. Box 418, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426.

CRYSTAL M. SKIDGEL
PLYMOUTH & ETNA Crystal M. Skidgel, 69, died May 31, 2001 at her residence in Etna. She was born December 12, 1931 at Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada the daughter of Joseph and Marjorie (Stone) Barnes. Crystal and her husband, Sidney Skidgel, Sr. owned and operated Skidgel's Warehouse in Freedom for 30 years. She was a Gold Star Mother, and was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary in Newport. The American Legion Post in Newport was renamed Barrows-Skidgel Post 105 in honor of her son Donald, who was killed in Vietnam and had been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously.

In addition to her husband of Plymouth, she is survived by a son Sidney Skidgel, Jr. of Troy; 3 daughters, Diana Stewart of Troy, Carol Small of Etna, and Mildred Skidgel of Florida; a step-son, Robert Guerette of Carmel; and a step-daughter, Diane Button of Caribou; a sister, Edna Kincaid of Texas; 18 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren. In addition to her son Donald, Crystal was also predeceased by a son Robert; and brothers Almond Barnes, Lewis Barnes and Eaton Barnes.

Visitation will be held Saturday and Sunday at Carol Small's home in Etna, located on the Young Road, 1.5 miles from the Etna-Dixmont Exit on I-95. Graveside services will be held 1 P.M. Monday, June 4th, at the family lot, Sawyer Cemetery, Plymouth, with Brother Alwood officiating. Friends may also call at the Small home from 9 A.M. to noon Monday prior to the services at the cemetery. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

BRIAN DECKER FILES
BROWNVILLE JUNCTION and ORMOND BEACH, FLA. - Brian Decker Files, 45, died at his residence in Florida, May 22, 2001. He was born in Milo, March 29, 1956, the son of Douglas and Leona Files. Brian was a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy. He served from 1974 to 1994. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, auto racing, and woodworking.

In addition to his mother, Leona Dube of Brownville Junction and his father, Douglas Files of Union City, Calif., he is survived by a son, Brian Files Jr. of Brownville; three daughters, Pamela Files of New Mexico, Crystal and Heather Files of Daytona Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Tanya Bragdon of Contoocook, N.H., Cheryl Kroemer of Milo, Julies Herbest and Judy Ogden of Brownville Junction; three grandchildren, Cody, Dylan and Austin Files; and his companion, Judith McLeod of Ormond Beach, Fla.

A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2001, at Pinetree Cemetery, Brownville Junction, with the Rev. David McLeish officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, Fla. 32119, or the American Cancer Society, East Volusia Unit, 146 Orange Ave., Daytona Beach, Fla. 32114. Local arrangements by the Lary Funeral Home.

ERIC A. FENNELLY
SANGERVILLE AND DEXTER - SANGERVILLE AND DEXTER, Eric A. Fennelly, 91, died June 5, 2001, at a Dover-Foxcroft hospital. He was born March 26, 1910 in Northeast Harbor, son of Andrew and Eva (Svenson) Fennelly. He attended schools in Northeast Harbor and then attended welding school in Boston. During WWII he worked as a welder for Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Mass., and was proud to have worked on the famous aircraft carrier, the “Gray Ghost”. Eric also worked as a carpenter, helping to build the Bangor Auditorium, and the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge and later worked as an overseer at Dunbarton Woolen Mill in Dexter He loved sports, hunting and fishing; loved to dance and was a member of the Bangor Singles Club. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Hazel (Arno) Fennelly.

He is survived by 2 sons and their wives, David and Stacey Fennelly of Corinna and Keith and Linda Fennelly of Newport; a daughter and her husband, Alice and Russell Moulton of Sangerville; 3 sisters, Esther Rogers, Alice Nicholson and Inez Henckler all of Northeast Harbor; 7 grandchildren: 10 great grandchildren: a special friend, Ethel Fedus of Sangerville; nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a son, Robert, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Memorial services will be held 11 AM Saturday June 9, 2001, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main St., Dexter with Rev. Adam Tierney officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter.

CLAIRE J. TOBIN
DEXTER Claire J. Tobin, 85, widow of James H. Tobin, Sr., died June 6, 2001 at a Dexter health care facility. She was born May 28, 1916 at Auburn, Massachusetts, the daughter of Levi and Helena (Lajoie) Croteau. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester, Mass. and the Worcester School of Accounting. Mrs. Tobin worked in the Auburn/Worcester, Mass. area for many years as a bookkeeper. She has resided in Dexter for the past 24 years, where she was a communicant of St. Anne's Parish.

She is survived by a son, James and his wife Patricia Tobin of Dexter; a daughter-in-law, Susan Colton of Shrewsbury, Mass; as well as five grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-9 P.M. Sunday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street, Dexter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 A.M. Monday, June 11th, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Dexter with the Rev. Raymond Morency officiating. A graveside committal service and burial will be held 2 P.M. Tuesday, June 12th at Hillside Cemetery, Auburn, Mass.

ELLEN M. CARMODY
ETNA & PLYMOUTH - A graveside funeral service for Ellen Carmody, who died April 12th in Lakeland, Florida, will be held 3 P.M. Friday, June 8th, at the family lot, Detroit Village Cemetery, with the Rev. Phyllis Webber officiating.

Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Newport.

NORMAN J. ROBICHAUD
DEXTER - Norman J. Robichaud, 58, the husband of Alicia (Irish) Robichaud, died June 5, 2001, at a Bangor hospital after a long illness. He was born July 30, 1942, in Dexter, the son of Joseph and Rose (LaFlamme) Robichaud. He attended Dexter schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had worked many years at Dexter Shoe, retiring in 1997, due to ill health. He was a member of the Poulliott-Seavey Post, American Legion in Dexter and a former member of the Dexter Fire Department, where he had served as clerk, secretary and treasurer for several years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Dexter, are two brothers, Larry and his wife, Judy, Andre and his wife, Alice; and a sister, Joline and her husband, Leon, all of Dexter; several nieces and nephews. Norman was predeceased by a brother, Neilan.

A Funeral Mass will be said 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Dexter, with the Rev. Fr. Ray Morency officiating. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to the Arthritis Foundation, Maine Region, 201 Main St., Suite 6, Westbrook, Me. 04092; or the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St., Suite F, Augusta, Me. 04330. SUSAN HAMBRECHT DROPKIN
WELLSBORO, PA & DEXTER - Susan Margaret Dropkin, 49, died December 17, 2000 at home. born November 10, 1951 in Dexter, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Antoinette Poulin Hambrecht.

Burial will be on Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter, at 1:30 PM. Father Raymond Morancie will officiate.
