Charles H. McIlwain Jr.

Charles "Mac" McIlwain, 79, of East Boothbay, died Tuesday, August 22 at St. Andrews Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor.
Born December 19, 1920, in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of Charles H. and Kathleen Thompson McIlwain. Mac grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts, spending most of his summers on Squirrel Island. Although he was too young to join the U.S. Armed Forces, through his mother's citizenship Mac joined the Royal Canadian
Air Force. He flew as a pilot in World War II, and after being shot down in Germany, was a Prisoner of War for 14 months. Upon his return to the United States, Mac married Anne Clark McIlwain, with whom he had summered on Squirrel Island for many years.
After graduating from Colgate University, Mac settled with Anne in Chatham, New Jersey, where they raised two children and he worked as a Vice President for Citibank in New York City. In addition to his career in banking, Mac worked as a volunteer policeman for the Chatham Police Department, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Chatham Wheelman's club.
Mac and Anne retired to East Boothbay in 1987. Mac enjoyed his role as sternman for son-in-law John Luke, and cooking breakfast at the Rocktide Inn. Mac was an avid gardener. Other hobbies included boating, fishing, building model airplanes, caring for animals, and enjoying his family. Mac is best remembered for his sense of humor.
Survivors include daughter Frederica Luke and husband John, Charles H. McIlwain III and his wife, Lisa, granddaughters Elizabeth and Emma, all of East Boothbay, sister Olive and Dr. Walter Kerr of Milton, Mass. and Squirrel Island, sister-in-law Phebe Miller of Milton, Mass. and Squirrel Island, several nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Family and friends gathered to celebrate Mac's life at the home of Charles and Lisa McIlwain on Tuesday, August 29. Memorial contributions may be made to the YMCA Y-Arts Youth Chorus, P.O. Mr. Leroy E. Marston

BRIDGTON - Leroy E. Marston, 80, known as Roy died August 5, at his home after a short illness with cancer.
He was born in Lubec, a son of Earl and Ruperta Marston.
He came to Bridgton in 1938 to join the Civilian Conservation Corp. In 1941, he joined the Army Air Corp and served as a cryptologist in the Aleutian Islands for three years during WWII.
In 1945 he returned to Bridgton and married Beverley Johnson. He became a barber and worked on Main Street in Bridgton in his shop for 54 years. He was a member of the Congregational Church, a 50-years member of the Conistry of Portland, a 32nd degree Mason, and a 50-year member and past master of Oriental Masonic Lodge #13 of Bridgton.
Mr. Marston is survived by his wife of 55 years, two sons Eric and Greg of Bridgton, his grandchildren Jonathan and Janet, a brother Bernard Marston of California, and a sister Jean Mattson of New York. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 10, at 2 p.m. in the First Congregational Church in Bridgton with the Reverend Richard Male officiating.

Marjorie J. Maxcy

Marjorie J. Maxcy
Marjorie J. Maxcy, 88, of South Portland, died Tuesday, October 3 at a local nursing home.
Born in Scarsdale, New York, she was a daughter of Harry Sturgis and Caroline Clapp Jackson. In 1931 she graduated from Deering High School.
On October 4, 1935 she married Gardiner J. Maxcy in Lexington, Mass. After living in Stowe, Mass. for a short time, she raised her family in Clinton, Mass. where she was active in church, hospital and other local affairs.
Mrs. Maxcy moved to Lexington, Mass. in 1957, where she and her husband, now deceased, owned and operated the Lexington Press in downtown Lexington for many years.
She and her husband and family summered on Squirrel Island for many years, having kept the Maxcy cottage there until 1993. She recently resided at the Portland House in Portland, and regularly attended St. Alban's Church in Cape Elizabeth.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne Maxcy Newbury of Squirrel Island and South Portland, and Carolyn Maxcy of Cape Elizabeth; one son, Robert F. Maxcy of Holliston, Mass.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Friday, October 6 at St. Alban's Church in Cape Elizabeth. Burial followed at St. Mary the Virgin Church Yard cemetery in Falmouth.

Elva Marshall McAllister

NORWAY - Elva Marshall McAllister, 89, of Norway died Wednesday, September 27, 2000 at Norway Rehabilitation & Living Center surrounded by her family.
She was born in Brownfield on December 23, 1910, the daughter of Leslie C. and Jean Swan Poor. She attended schools in Brownfield, Cornish, Bethel and Rumford.
She worked at the Portland Shipyard during WWII and after moving to Norway in 1949 she clerked at Stones Drug Store, Lucks Market and W. T. Grants. She has also worked at the Bethel Inn.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.
She married Everett Marshall in 1926. She later married Francis McAllister.
She is survived by one son, John and his wife Evelyn Marshall of Norway; a son-in-law, Robert Swan of Chelsea; one step-sister, Virginia Walker of Bethel; 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and the extended family of the late Francis McAllister.
She was predeceased by both husbands; a brother, Cecil Poor; two daughters, Marilyn Toher of R.I. and Elizabeth Swan of Chelsea and a grandson, Stevie Toher of R.I.
Graveside services were held on Sunday, October 1, 2000 at the Wayside cemetery in West Paris. Mrs. McAllister's grandchildren wrote and read the graveside service.
Arrangements were under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.
Douglas O. McLain, Sr.

Douglas O. McLain, Sr., 69, of Walpole, died Sat., Sept. 30 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
He was born September 26, 1931 on Bremen Long Island the son of Orrin and Viola Prior McLain.
He was a lobsterman most of his life. He was a Korean War Veteran. He resided in Bremen until 1978 and moved to Walpole. He loved his dog, “TJ.” He enjoyed
hunting
, fishing, boating, playing cards and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann Marando McLain of Walpole; sons, Douglas O. McLain, Jr. of Walpole; David Leonard of Smyra, Ga., daughters; Carol Burr of South Bristol; Darlene McLain and Judy Schwarz both of Damariscotta; Rhonda Flower of Bremen and Jeanette Wordock of Round Pond, sisters; Addie Stover of Union, Maxine Thompson of Friendship; 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons.
Visiting hours 6 to 8 p.m. Wed., Oct. 4 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Thur., at the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery in Bremen. Contributions in his memory may be made to the So. Bristol First Responders. Arrangements are by Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
Ruth Morrison

Ruth Strout Morrison, of New Gloucester, 64, died October 14 in Boston.
Mrs. Morrison worked for the school lunch program in M.S.A.D. 15. She was a member of the First Congregational Christian Church of New Gloucester, the Gray Christian Women's Guild and the Women's Evening Guild.
Her husband, Willard Morrison, died in 1990. She is survived by her mother, Ruby Strout, of New Gloucester; two daughters, Kim Francis, of New Gloucester, and Wanda Croteau, of Livermore Falls; a sister, Barbara Verrill, of New Gloucester; a brother, Raymond Strout, of Poland; and four grandchildren.
Florence L. Mank

Florence L. Mank, 96, Waldoboro, died Friday November 3 at Fieldcrest Manor.
She was born July 3, 1904 in Union the daughter of Granville and Annie Dolham Miller. She attended local schools in Union.
She married Foster T. Mank when she was 18. She worked at Medomak Canning Factory in Waldoboro for many years. She was a former member of the North Waldoboro Grange.
She enjoyed listening to the Red Sox on the radio and was an avid beano player. She knitted many mittens, hats and afghans for her family over the years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Foster T. Mank, a son, Foster T. Mank, Jr., brother, Roland Miller and by a grandson.
She is survived by two daughters: Louise Chapman of Highland Springs, VA, Donna Thorndike of Union, sister-in-law: Shirley Mank of Searsport, 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 16 great, great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service 1:30 p.m. Wed., Nov. 8 at the Shuman cemetery in Waldoboro. Rev. Vernon Jordan will officiate.

Donald Robert Manson, 74, of Alna, formerly of Newburyport, Mass., died Sunday, November 19 in Sandown, New Hampshire.
He was the husband of Anne Marie (Chaisson) Manson.
Born in Newburyport, Mass., October 14, 1926, he was the son of Clarence and Ethel (Schrempf) Manson, and he attended Newburyport schools graduating from Newburyport High School in 1944.
Mr. Manson was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion, Post #54 of Wiscasset. He also was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Newburyport, the Newburyport Volunteer Fire Department and the Ould Newbury Handtub Association.
Mr. Manson was well known in Newburyport having owned Manson's Garage on Merrimac Street for 30 years.
After retiring and moving to Maine, he raised cattle and enjoyed working in his large vegetable gardens. His hobbies included cooking,
hunting
, boating, fishing and carpentry.
Survivors includes his wife of 49 years, Anne Marie (Chaisson) Manson; one son, Donald R. Manson Jr. and his wife Laura of Amesbury, Mass.; five daughters, Deborah A. Manson of Salisbury, Mass, Dr. Marie A. Somers and husband Robert of Sandown, New Hampshire, Patricia I. Manson of Mashpee, Mass., Rebecca M. Brown and husband Buddy of Weare, New Hampshire, and Jayne D. Irving and husband Joel of East Falmouth, Mass.; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Bertha M. Groves of Ambler, Penn., and Judy Decie of Amesbury, Mass.
He was the brother of the late Alfred E. and Arthur C. Manson.
