Asa Merrick

Asa Merrick, 75, Nobleboro, died May 11 at Fieldcrest Nursing Home, Waldoboro, after a brief illness.
Born in Irkutsk, Siberia, May 1, 1924, he was the youngest of 11 children of Morris and Fanny Merrick. At an early age he moved with his family to Harbin, China, and later to Joliet, Quebec, Canada. In the early 1930s, his family moved to New York City.
During World War II, Mr. Merrick served in the Army with General Patton's 3rd Army. He often worked as a translator between Soviet and U.S. troops.
In 1947, he married Vivian Besmanoff in Brooklyn, N.Y. Together they made their home in and around New York City, until moving to Nobleboro in 1976. Mrs. Merrick died in 1989.
Mr. Merrick worked for many yers as a union printer with Typographical Local #6. For several years he worked with the B.H. Tyrell Company in New York. More recently, he ran the print shop at Augusta Mental Health Institute.
On Oct. 10, 1993 he married Lorraine Guay at West Bath.
An avid card player, he particularly enjoyed pinochle. He took great pleasure in telling the story of his 1971 trip with his wife, driving to and returning from Alaska via the Alaska Highway. For many years he volunteered at the Augusta YMCA and at St. Bernard's soup kitchen in Rocklaand.
He was a member of the Adas Yoshuron Congregation, Rockland, and the American Legion.
Predeceased by a daughter, Lisa Garozzo, in 1985, Mr. Merrick is survived by his wife of Nobleboro; his son Perry and his wife Honey of New York; a sister, Zina Dobbins of Hackensack, N.J.; two step-daughters, Maureen Lathrape and her husband Cory of Pittston, and Kathy Rackley of South China; a granddaughter, Tammy Garozzo of Florida; a step-grandson, Jacob Lathrape; two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Sara; and two nieces.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thurs., April 20, at the Berliawsky-Small Cemetery, Upper Park St., Rockland; Rabbi Harry Sky will officiate. Arrangements are with Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, Rockland.
Lloyd H. Merrill

Lloyd H. Merrill, 89, of Woolwich, died Friday, June 19 at Midcoast Hospital, Brunswick, after a long illness.
Born in Burnham, a son of Harold and Prudence Young, he attended Old Town schools.
After he married Evelyn M. Garland in 1934, they lived in Old Town, where he was employed at Penobscot Chemical Fibre Co. from 1929 to 1943. He moved to Woolwich in 1943 and worked at Bath Iron Works and later at Kennebec Wharf and Coal Co., Bath.
Mr. Merrill was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Wiscasset and the Solar Lodge of Masons, Bath.
Surviving are his wife of Woolwich; three sons, Lloyd G. and Gerald Y., both of Woolwich and Robert E. of Windham; two daughters, Elaine E. Grover of Wiscasset and Diane E. Davis of Woolwich; a sister, Madelyn M. Hollis of Bangor; 14 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours were Monday, June 22 at David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High Street, Bath, where a Masonic service was held. A funeral service was held Tuesday, June 23 at the funeral home with the Rev. Glen West officiating. Burial was in Grover Cemetery.
Daphne Winslow Merrill

AUBURN Daphne Winslow Merrill, 94, a former resident of Auburn died Wednesday at the Odd Fellows Home in Auburn following a brief illness.
She was born in Rockland March 4, 1904 the daughter of Wilder C. Winslow of Milwaukee, a direct decent of the Mayflower immigrant Edward Winslow, governor of the Plymouth Colonize in the 1630s-40s; and Grace Lothrop of Rockland, cousin of the poet Edna St. Vincent Mislay. She was educated in the schools of Rockland and received advance degree credits from the University of Maine, The University of New Hampshire, and Middlebury, Vermont.
She married James Walker Merrill of Fryeburg. He died in 1968.
Mrs. Merrill was a teacher for most of her life having taught four languages, music, drama, and athletics in secondary schools at Union, Norway, Fryeburg and Conway, New Hampshire. At the time of her Retirement, after 54 years of teaching, she was an Associate Professor in English for the University of Maine.
Her interest included writing and corresponding with friends.
Mrs. Merrill was a honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi, a life member of Phi Mu, and of Miriam RebekahE Lodge #33. She was a past state president of the New Hampshire Classical League, the Maine Writers Research Club, the Maine Business and Professional Women's Clubs Lewiston-Auburn, where she received the degree of Chivalry, and the New England Council of English Teachers. She was the only member of the Business Professional Women's Clubs ever elected to a national position. She also served as interpreter at two International Congresses of the Organization. She was also a member of Pine Cone Chapter #26 O.E.S., Androscoggin Retired Teachers Association, National Registered Teachers Association and Lafayette Chapter of the L.A.P.M. She was past officer in Delta Kappa Gamma, Past Noble Grand of Liberty Rebekah Lodge #94, Past Assembly Chaplain of the Rebekah Assembly of Maine, Past State Correspondent of the Rebekah l.R.A. Mrs. Merrill was a 75-year member of the Rebekahs. She was a Corporator of Auburn Public Library and secretary of the Androscoggin Historical Society.
On the state level, Mrs. Merrill served on Various committees and projects under six Maine governors; lectured on Civil Defense, and instigated the Blue Chip Program.
Mrs. Merrill published literary works include Cones From the Pines of Maine, plus articles and poems in magazines, newspapers, and anthologies. She was co-editor of Auburn-100 Years a City and has been listed in Who's Who Of American Women. In London issue of Who's Who in international Biography.
Mrs. Merrill was a pianist for silent movies, Chatauquas, and dance bands; and was church organist and vocalist In the 1970's she served as program coordinator at I.O.O.F Home in Auburn where she was assistant Matron.
Mrs. Merrill was a Universalist and attended the Universalist Church of Auburn of the last several years.
Survivors include her close personal friend, Mrs. Helen Wing of Mechanic Falls; and several cousins.
Memorial donations may be made to Auburn Library, 49 Spring Street, Auburn 04210. Interment will be at Acron cemetery in Rockland.
Louise E. Merrill

LEWISTON -Louise E. Merrill, 58, of Bolsters Mills, died Saturday, April 17, 1999 at the Central Maine Medical Center, where she had been a patient.
Born in Waltham, MA on December 26, 1940, she was the daughter of the late David T. and Marie C. (Turnquest) Gustafson. She attended the local schools and graduated from Waltham High School with the class of 1960.
She married Ernest E. Hingey in 1963, who predeceased her in 1972. She later married Edward Merrill in 1977, whom she later divorced.
Louise worked for 17 years as a CNA at the Medfield, MA State Hospital, prior to moving to Maine in 1991. While in Maine she worked at Supreme Slipper in Lewiston until her illness necessitated her retirement.
A member of the First Lutheran Church of Waltham, MA, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and sewing.
Surviving are four daughters, Jacqueline Toomey of Corina, CA, Marie Theirren of Woonsocket, RI, Caroline Ramsey of Otisfield and Alice Hovan of Manville, RI; a son, John Merrill of Bolsters Mills; two sisters, Alice Ekstrom of Dunstable, MA and Betty Backman of Kittery, 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Caroline Frizell, and a brother, John Gustafson, predeceased her.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, April 21 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, South Paris; Interment at the family's convenience. Those who wish may make donations in Mrs. Merrill's memory to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 34 Buckfield Rd., S. Paris, ME 04281. Arrangements are under the care of the Andrews Funeral Home, Bryant Pond.

A graveside service for Chester E. Merry, 86, of Wiscasset who died November 23, 1997 will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 8 in Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.
Helene Meserve

Ethel M. Meserve

NORWAY Ethel M. Meserve, 78, of Norway died Thursday October 1, 1998, at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.
She was born in Sanford on March 26, 1920, the daughter of Carl and Bernice Reid Allen. She was a graduate of Casco High School.
She married William Meserve on Oct. 14, 1939. Mrs. Meserve was a homemaker and had done office work for various local shoe shops throughout most of her life. She had also worked at Wilner Wood Products. Mrs. Meserve was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Norway, the women's fellowship at the church, and the Heywood Club.
She is survived by her husband William of Norway; two daughters, Brenda Cronin of Mechanic Falls and Kristie Stanewick of South Paris; two sisters, Bertha Hartford of E. Millinocket and Eleanor Goan of Montverde, FL; four grandchildren, Darel Richardson of South Paris, Duane Richardson of Venice, CA, Tina Stanewick of South Paris, and Benjamin Stanewick of New Jersey, many, many nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Ernest C. Allen of North Berwick.
Services were held Sunday in the Second Congregational Church of Norway.
Interment followed at the Riverside Annex cemetery in South Paris. Donations in memory can be made to the Second Congregational Church of Norway 90 Main St. Norway, ME 04268.
Arrangements were under the care of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.
Emiele Miele

SOUTH PARIS - Emiele Miele, 81, of South Paris died early Thursday morning, February 4, at the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris., where he had been a patient for the past year.
Mr. Miele was born in Westbrook, on February 18, 1917, the son of the late Pasquale and Theresa Miele. He was educated in the schools of Lewiston and Rumford and had maintained his home on Concord Pond Road in Milton Plantation for over half a century, until establishing his residence in South Paris in 1993.
A mason by trade, he specialized in stone fireplaces and walls until his retirement in 1970. Earlier he had been employed with the Oxford Paper Company of Rumford. Mr. Miele was a member of the Swasey-Torrey Post #100 of the American Legion in Dixfield.
He married the former Ola Billings, February 23, 1937, who survives him.
Besides his wife of nearly 62 years, he is survived by two daughters, June Seames of Bryant Pond and Brenda Hodgdon of Oxford; a son, Norman Miele of Peru; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Miele was pre-deceased by three sisters, a brother and a grandson.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 6, at the Andrews Funeral Home in South Woodstock. Interment was Monday, February 8, at the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery in Augusta.
Kayla Mae Miller

Kayla Mae Miller, infant daughter of Jeff Miller and Amanda Lewis of Boothbay, died Tuesday, October 27 at Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her maternal grandparents, Cindy and Mark Lewis of Boothbay; her paternal grandmother, Kathy Lewis of Brunswick; her maternal great-grandparents, Paul and Phyllis Poole, and David Lewis and Charlotte Webster, all of Boothbay; and an aunt, Brandy Lewis of Boothbay.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Simmons and Harrington Funeral Home, Boothbay Harbor. Burial will follow in the Oaklawn cemetery in Boothbay Harbor. Arrangements are by Simmons and Harrington.
Stanley R. Miller Jr.

Stanley R. Miller Jr. of Essex, Connecticut, died Wednesday, April 14. He was 85.
He was born in Winchester, Mass., and had lived in Tuxedo Park, New York, until 1973, when he moved to Connecticut.
He began coming to Squirrel Island in 1913 and spent 75 summers here. His sister-in-law, Mrs. Alan Miller of Milton, Mass., is a Squirrel Island resident.
Mr. Miller was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant commander in the Pacific. He worked in the airline industry, retiring in 1965.
He was a member of the Old Lyme Country Club, Old Lyme Beach Club, Corinthian Yacht Club in Essex and St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Old Lyme, Conn.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Mason Miller; a stepson, George Stillman of New York City; a stepdaughter, Constance Chambliss of Hattlesburg, Miss.; four step-grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held April 27 at St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Old Lyme. The Robinson, Wright and Weymer Funeral Home of Centerbrook, Conn., handled the arrangements.
