Evelyn P. Hurtado
2004-07-22
Evelyn Pease Hurtado, 70, a retired teacher of elementary education, adult education, and English as a second language, died peacefully on July 12 at her Boothbay Harbor home, following a brief illness.
Born in Temple, Maine, on April 2, 1934, she was the daughter of Doris Merchant and Carrol Kennedy.
During childhood she and her two brothers came into the care of Howard and Gladys Pease of Farmington, who later adopted the siblings and had two daughters of their own. At age 9 Evelyn moved to the Good Will-Hinckley Home for Boys and Girls in Hinckley, Maine, graduating from high school there in 1952. She held dear her Good Will family.
In 1956, she earned a bachelor's degree at Farmington State Teacher's College (later the University of Maine at Farmington). Her passion and love for teaching began with her first classroom in Troy, Maine, where she taught a class of third, fourth, and fifth graders during 1956-57.
She went on, over the next 20 years, to teach elementary education in Florida, England, California, and Livermore Falls, Maine.
Evelyn later spent 15 years teaching adult education in Maine, through Literacy Volunteers and Adult Basic Education (ABE) in Farmington and then ABE and English as a second language in Augusta.
When asked about her connections with her adult students she once wrote, "I share parts of myself and my own life experience that seem directly or indirectly related to the things my learner shares with me. This sharing of ourselves is a vital part of the relationship we form, for we are all human and all learners."
In 1958 Evelyn Pease married Harold Chapman. She raised their three children while her husband served in the U.S. Air Force. They divorced amicably after 20 years.
In 1984 she married Felix Hurtado of Etzatlan, JAL, Mexico. They met when she became his tutor in English when he worked near Farmington.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hurtado is survived by her three children: Melody Fitch of Gardiner, Scott Chapman of Austin, Texas, and Lance Chapman of Boothbay Harbor. She was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm, and father, Howard, but is survived by her mother, Gladys, of Farmington; her brother, Linwood Pease, of Leeds; two sisters, Evangeline Pease Tartt and Sandra Pease Webber, both of Farmington; and a half-sister, Phyllis Manter of Bingham. Also surviving are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In an unusual twist, Mr. and Mrs. Hurtado planned a Celebration of Life for Evelyn and her friends and family. On June 7, the Reverend Carl A. Russell presided over a joyful and moving service of prayers, readings, and music at the Railway Village chapel. Evelyn spoke eloquently of her love for family and friends and of her acceptance of her approaching passing; she heard tributes from family and friends, and from her nurse, Lynn Schaefer of Southport.
Friends and family are invited for an informal gathering of love and remembrance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Hurtado home in Boothbay Harbor. Please bring food if you wish or perhaps a plant for the garden. Call 582-2179 for information.
