Paul F. Hermann
2004-12-02

Paul F. Hermann, 63, of Dover, N.H., died Sunday, November 28 at his home following a long struggle with cancer.

Born August 4, 1941 in Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Paul F. and Mary (Kelley) Hermann.

In 1959 he graduated from Boston Technical High School, and General Electric apprenticeship program in Lynn, Mass.

Twelve years ago he and his family moved to Dover from Boothbay Harbor. He was a resident of Boothbay for 17 years prior to that.

Mr. Hermann was an inventor, involved in research and development of hydrophilic foam used in medical, automotive, sports, apparel and household products.

He was a 33-year Friend of Bill W. and was a member of Old Tyme Cruising Car Club of Dover. He particularly enjoyed building and restoring automobiles.

Survivors include his wife Virginia M. "Ginny" (Banks) Hermann of Dover; two sons, Edward J. Hermann and his wife Annie of Swampscott, Mass., and James R. Hermann of Dover; four daughters, Lorraine M. "Lorri" Reardon of South Hadley, Mass., Beth M. Boudreau, Chelsea E. Hermann and Kelley J. Hermann, all of Dover; one brother, John Hermann of Rosemont, Penn.; and two grandchildren, Emily R. and Brett M. Reardon of South Hadley, Mass.

He was predeceased by one brother, James Herman; and a sister, Helen Hermann.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 2 at St. Joseph Church, 150 Center Ave. in Dover, with the Rev. Paul Ruzzo, associate pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover.

Ruth Hersey passes away at 87
2005-02-25

Ruth Harriet (Davis) Hersey, 87, of New Gloucester, died February 16 at Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris.

Mrs. Hersey was born in Tuftonboro, NH, a daughter of Harry and Sarah (Gilman) Davis. She married Robert S. Hersey in 1933, in Tuftonboro; he died in 1978.

She was always a homemaker and was very active in the New Gloucester Bible Church.

She is survived by her son, John, and wife Shelia, Hersey of North Norway; daughters Marylou Shattuck and husband Allen, of Auburn, and Bonnie Hersey of Mechanic Falls; a granddaughter, Kimberly Hersey, of North Norway; a sister, Eleanor Knights, of Exeter, NH; and several nieces nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; two sisters, Beatrice Davis and Mildred Dore; and two brothers, Albert Davis and Arthur Davis.

Visitation was last Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home, with a funeral service immediately following. Burial will be in Lower Gloucester cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 162 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04101.

Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.

Ivern M. Higgins
2004-06-10

Ivern M. Higgins, 83, of Bath, died Sunday, June 6 at a Brunswick hospital.

Born in Boothbay Harbor on November 23, 1920, she was a daughter of Frank and Angie Farnham. She attended Boothbay Harbor schools and graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1938.

On March 24, 1942, she married Warren A. Higgins, Chairman of the Board of Bath First Federal Savings in Bath.

She hosted many Sunday barbecues at the family camp on Merrymeeting Bay and enjoyed camping, swimming and boating. She knitted sweaters for her grandchildren and each year looked forward to seeing the tall ships during Windjammer Days in Boothbay Harbor.

She was an avid Red Sox and Morse High School basketball fan.

Mrs. Higgins was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years; one son, Kent and his wife Nan Higgins of Naples; three daughters, Sue and her husband Jim DuPont of Gardiner, June and her husband Steve Chaisson of Farmingdale, and Jane and her husband Mark Colby of North Bath; one sister, Ella Wagstaff of Boothbay Harbor; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchild-ren.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, June 9 at David E. Desmond Funeral Home in Bath. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery immediately after the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements were by David E. Desmond Funeral Home in Bath.

Emma F. Hikel
2004-04-22

Emma Ferris Hikel, 92, of Boothbay Harbor, died Saturday, April 17 at St. Andrews Gregory Wing in Boothbay Harbor..

Born on September 21, 1911 in Waterville, she was a daughter of Ames and Anna George Ferris.

Mrs. Hikel was the owner of Emma's Guest House. She was a long-time member of the Boothbay Region Chamber of Commerce. Over a period of 30 years she welcomed guests from all over the world into her home. She was an avid gardener; she shared her love of flowers with her guests and her friends in the community. Many of the gardens in the Boothbay Harbor area are filled with Emma's gifts of sharing.

For many years she spent winters in Clearwater, Florida where she was a theater events coordinator at the Tides Hotel.

Mrs. Hikel was predeceased by her husband, Michael Hikel of Waterville.

Survivors include one sister, Diane Fjeldheim, of Waterville; one brother, Abraham Ferris, of Florida; many nieces and nephew; extended family, Daren and Debbie Graves and Peter and Carol Stratton, all of Boothbay Harbor.

A celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 23 at the Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay, Maine, with Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiating

A graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, 78 Grove Street in Waterville with the Rev. Sam Najjar officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Hikel's memory may be made to the Boothbay Region Garden Club, for continued beautification of her beloved community. Send donations to Boothbay Region Garden Club, 963 Hendricks Hill Road, Southport, ME 04576, c/o Carol Lingard.

David R. Hilton
2002-03-28

David Russell Hilton, 89, of Southport, died Saturday, March 23, at St. Andrews Village after a brief illness.

Born February 12, 1913 in Waterville, he was the son of Harry M. and Alice Jewett Hilton. He attended Colby College in Waterville, graduating in 1935. In 1936, he married Ann Trimble, his spouse of 65 years who predeceased him in October. They resided in Waterville and in 1976 retired to Southport, his childhood summer home.

During World War II, Mr. Hilton served in the U.S. Army. After his service in the Army, he joined his father and brother in business at Proctor & Bowie Co., a lumber and hardware business in Winslow. He was owner of this business until his retirement.

Throughout his entire adult life, Mr. Hilton served the communities in which he lived in countless ways. A member of the Board of Directors at the YMCA in Waterville, after his retirement he became actively involved in the YMCA in Boothbay Harbor. He was a president and longtime member of the Waterville Kiwanis Club, a 50-year member of the Kora Temple Shriners of Lewiston and a member of the Colby College Alumni Association. He served as president and board member of The Waterville Savings and Loan, served on the advisory board to the Girl Scouts, served on the building and grounds committee for St. Andrews Hospital, and served as a trustee of the Pine Tree cemetery in Waterville and for cemeteries on Southport Island. He was a volunteer for Boothbay Region's Meals on Wheels.

A life-long lover of the ocean, Mr. Hilton enjoyed many hours of boating with his friends and family and was a volunteer instructor for the U.S. Power Squadron for many years. He was also an aficionado of history and belonged to the Southport Historical Society.

Surviving are his four daughters and their spouses, Ruth Davison of Edgecomb, Martha and Carl Houghton of Essex Junction, Vermont, Sarah and Michael Eastwood of Hampden and Jane and Dana Mulholland of Lewiston; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

For those who wish, memorial gifts can be made in Mr. Hilton's name to the Boothbay Region YMCA, Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538; St. Andrews Hospital, 3 St. Andrews Lane, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538; or an organization of their choice.

A gathering and celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Ann T. Hilton
2001-11-01

Ann Trimble Hilton, 86, of Southport, died Saturday, October 27 at St. Andrews Hospital.

She was born December 14, 1914, in Milltown, New Brunswick.

She attended Colby College in Waterville, graduating in 1935. In 1936 she married David Hilton and the couple resided in the Waterville area until their retirement in 1976. Longtime summer residents, they retired to Southport Island.

A homemaker and a mother, Mrs. Hilton spent much of her life volunteering. While living in Waterville she was active in the AAUW and the Thayer Hospital Auxiliary. She also devoted time to the Girl Scouts and the Congregational Church. After her move to Southport, she became an active volunteer with the Boothbay Region YMCA and the Southport library. A skilled artisan, she was a member of a local rug-hooking group.

Her focus in life was truly her family. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fostering a strong connection with extended family.

Surviving is her husband of 65 years, David Hilton of Southport; one sister, Louise Willis of Winnipeg, Manitoba; four daughters, Ruth Davison of Edgecomb, Martha Houghton of Essex Junction, Vermont, Sally Eastwood of Hamden, and Jane Mulholland of Lewiston; ten grandchildren; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two of her sisters, Ruth Trimble and Sarah Reynolds.

Mrs. Hilton will be cremated and a celebration of her life will be held on Friday, November 23 at 1 p.m. at the Southport Methodist Church.

Alice R. Hilton
2004-06-10

Alice Robertson Hilton, died Wed-nesday, June 9 at St. Andrews Hospital, after a long illness. Although a resident of St. Andrews Village for only four years, she was widely loved and respected, especially at the St. Columba's Episcopal Church where she was treasurer of the Women's Association.

Mrs. Hilton was born in Bangor and lived in Orono before enrolling in Wellesley College. Her father, Robert Robertson, owned and operated a paper plate mill in Old Town. On his death in 1972, Mrs. Hilton gave the woodlands of his farm to a land trust in Orono for a 60-acre public park.

In 1943 she graduated from Wellesley and subsequently received a Master's degree in English Literature from the University of Maine.

During World War II she served in the U.S. Navy as a gunnery instructor at Pensacola, an unlikely post for a gentle person who hated guns. Two brothers, Robert and John, were killed in the U.S. Air Force.

Prior to her marriage in 1949 to Thomas L. Hilton, a retired research psychologist, she was employed as a writer by the Bangor Commercial and later as society editor for the Penobscot Times in Old Town. Before moving to Boothbay Harbor, she was in the personnel department of Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey.

In addition to her husband Tom, she is survived by three sons, Robert Robertson, president and CEO of the MacGregor Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, William Robertson, graphic artist in Patchogue, New York, and Thomas Leonard Jr., computer engineer, Springport, Michigan; and three grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Columba's Episcopal Church, 638 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay, ME 04537.

John B. Hilton
2000-04-20

John Bainbridge Hilton, 48, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Boothbay, died on Thursday, March 16

He was a resident of the South Florida for 14 years. He had worked in the bonding industry for 23 years, owning John B. Hilton Associates in Los Angeles and Surety Express in Fort Lauderdale. At the time of his death he was the Chief Operating Officer of the National Surety Association

A naturalist by his nature, he was also a self-proclaimed entomologist, gardener and orchid enthusiast

Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Mary Donnolly Hilton; a stepson and his fiancee James Harold and Amy, and their daughter Taylor of Fort Lauderdale; his brother, Gordon Hilton; a niece, Deborah Hilton; and a nephew, Gordon Hilton, all of Bangor. In Boothbay he is survived by his mother, Carolyn Hilton; his sister, Nancy Hilton and Michael Mac-Kusick; a niece, Annie Lyn Mac-Kusick; one aunt, Maude Page; and many cousins throughout the state

His remains will be scattered in the family woods in the autumn
