Hixon, John A.
Jan. 18, 1929 - March 10, 2005
John A. Hixon, 76, of Round Pond, passed away on March 10 at his home surrounded by several family members.
John was born in Boston, Mass. on Jan. 18, 1929. He was the only son of Ruth and Reginald Hixon and grew up in Melrose, Mass. He was a graduate of Hebron Academy in Hebron. John was a Boson’s Mate 3rd class in the U.S. Navy and fought in the Korean War until his Honorable discharge in 1952.
He graduated from Tufts University and was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. During his business career he became the vice president of Bird & Son, a national roofing company headquartered in Walpole, Mass. where he was a devoted and integral part of the company for 32 years. In 1970 he and his family moved to Duxbury, Mass. where he maintained a very close relationship with Ruth and Reginald who also moved to Duxbury to be close to the grandchildren.
John loved the water and shared that loved with others during his lifetime. Whether it was catching bluefish in late August or freshwater fly-fishing with his son, John was at home on the open water with family and friends. In the 70’s and 80’s he was a member of the Duxbury Yacht Club and enjoyed spirited tennis matches with his friends. In his later years he enjoyed traveling and antiquing with his wife Joy, reading, boating and was his happiest in the company of other people.
He is survived by his wife Joy of Round Pond; children, Candace Quinlan of Half Moon Bay, Cal., Pamela LeBaron of Annandale, N.J., Jonathan Hixon of Eliot, and Meredith Collier of Woodstock, Ga.; their mother, Joan Ross of West Palm Beach, Fla.; step-daughters Holly Pierce of San Francisco, Cal., Wendy Pierce of Westbrook, and Laurie Pierce of Freeport.
Memorial service at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle, on Sat., March 19 at 2:30 p.m.

Bickford, Carroll
April 27, 1921 - March 13, 2005
Carroll Milford “Red” Bickford, 83, of Pemaquid Harbor, died March 13, at the home of his son, Brian, after a short battle with cancer.
Born in Waterville, April 27, 1921, he was the son of Roy and Gladys (Brackett) Bickford. As a young boy, Red lived at Fairfield Center, until moving with his mother and four brothers to Pemaquid Beach, and attended Bristol schools. In 1942 Red entered the US Navy, serving honorably for four years during WWII. After returning to Pemaquid Harbor he continued in the operation of his father-in-law’s well drilling business and remained there for 22 years. He later became self employed as a lobsterman and remained in that capacity for over 20 years, until retiring.
He was a member of the Pemaquid Fisherman’s CO-OP, up to the time of his death and was a member of the Order of Redmen, Mavoushan Tribe #10. Red loved
hunting and fishing throughout his life and got his first moose and turkey in 2004, with his sons.
He was predeceased by his wife Celia (Dyer) Bickford; his son Michael; and four brothers, Roy, Richard, Wellington (Bussy) and Kenneth Bickford.
Red leaves his sons Timothy C. Bickford of Brunswick, Brian R. and wife Greta Bickford of Pemaquid Harbor; his daughter Kathleen B. French of Skowhegan; nine grandchildren, Melissa, Lynz, Stacy, Jamie Bickford, Michael, Daniel and Adam Young, Kiley and Lucas Bickford and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to join the family from 11-1 Sat., March 19, at the Strong Funeral Home. His service will follow at 1 p.m., with Rev. Russell Thayer officiating. Red will be laid to rest, with his wife Celia, at the New Harbor Cemetery, in the spring.

Peaslee, Printice R.
Aug. 18, 1935 - March 13, 2005
Printice R. Peaslee, 69, of Jefferson, entered-into-rest early on the morning of March 13, at a Waldoboro nursing home. born in Jefferson Aug. 18, 1935, he was the son of Donald and Lillian (Foser) Peaslee.
A hard worker, he became a woodsman as a young man and continued in that capacity for most of his life, working for himself and several wood dealers. For many years he also worked at Washburn Lumber Company. Printice had a lifelong love for all things outdoors,
hunting, fishing, trapping and most especially raising his cattle. He and his wife, Anita, regularly attended Saturday night dances at Crystal Falls for many years.
He was predeceased by his wife of over 35 years, Anita (Achorn), his son Randy and a brother Alberto.
He leaves his son Timothy G. Peaslee and his wife Shiela, of Jefferson; two sisters, Juanita Baitler of Waterville, Vivian Galyle and her husband Dennis, of New Hampshire; a brother, Donald Peaslee and his wife Barb, of Whitefield; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to be with the family from 5-7 p.m., Fri., March 18, at the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. He will be laid to rest, with a graveside service, at the Fairview Cemetery, Jefferson, in the spring.

Connor, Frank W.
July 15, 1932 - March 3, 2005
Frank Walter Connor, 72, died March 3 at the home of his daughter in Washington, after a battle with cancer. born July 15, 1932 in Nashua, N.H., Frank was the son of Harold and Marion Connor. He graduated from Henniker, N.H., High School and pursued his education at Oberlin College where he earned a BA degree. Following his graduation, he served in the U.S. Army and married Dorothy Crawford of Mansfield, Ohio. On January 22 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He received his Masters Degree in Education from Keene State College, and in 1957, Frank accepted a teaching position at Stevens High School in Claremont, N.H. where he taught until his retirement in 1993. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached basketball and served as a track coach for many years.
He was a fellow of the “Loyal Order of Moose” where he served for many years as administrator. Mr. Connor also served on the Claremont City Council for seven years.
Frank was a devoted family man and was happiest when he was with them. He traveled often, visiting Japan, Russia, England, and Liberia where he dedicated a school which his high school class raised money to build. In addition, he traveled annually to the warm spots that he loved, including Hawaii and the Caribbean. He took great pleasure in following the stock market, with his family and friends often looking to him for investment advice. He will be remembered as one who had a great sense of humor and a cheery greeting for everyone. Surely his presence will be greatly missed.
His surviving family includes his wife Dorothy and three children: Edith (Connor) Berger of Waldoboro, Beth Connor of Washington, and William (Bill) Connor of Berwick; sister, Jane Nielsen of Sunapee, N.H.; four grandchildren, Alex and Kirsten Connor and Mollie and Sophie Berger; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Evans, Jean
Unknown - Feb. 28, 2005
Jean Frazier Evans, 94, died on Feb. 28, in Westwood, Mass. Formerly of Englewood, N.J., she was a long time resident of Christmas Cove, which held a special place in her heart. For 54 years, she was the beloved wife of Allyn Phelps Evans. After his death, she remained a devoted mother to her children, Frazier and Missy and a cherished grandmother to Russell, Lisa, Signe, Vanessa, Heather, William and great-grandmother to Oliver.
She was a strong supporter of the Miles Health Care Center and a long time member of St. Andrew’s Church in Newcastle.
She especially enjoyed gardening and was president of the local chapter of the Garden Club of America. Her flower arrangements won many prizes and she was particularly adept at creating striking arrangements of the simple wild flowers of Maine.
Despite her small size, she was a pillar of strength to her husband Allyn and a great supporter of her children. Her grandchildren treasured her unconditional love, seeking out her company and relishing her visits.
She was loved by many for the dry wit of her one-liners and her no nonsense approach to life. Uncomplaining in her latter years, she consistently deflected concerns about her health.
Internment is to be private at Brookside Cemetery, Englewood, N.J.

Quimby, Lucy W.
1919 - Feb. 1, 2005
Lucy Williams Quimby died peacefully at Westgate Manor on Feb. 1, after a long illness. She was born in Springfield, Mass. in 1919 and grew up in Exeter, N.H., and New Harbor. She graduated cum laude in biology from Radcliffe College in 1940, married Thomas H.E. Quimby, and studied public health at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1960 she received her MAT from Michigan State University. She taught at the American School in Monrovia, Liberia, where her husband was Peace Corps Country Representative. Later she taught biology at Spingarn, a public high school in Washington, D.C. She and her husband retired to New Harbor, where she volunteered for Hospice and Literacy Volunteers.
Lucy was a persistent and enthusiastic birder and an avid naturalist. She loved sea anemones, slime molds, wild ginger, rhinoceros beetles, night-blooming cereus and trailing arbutus. She was a connoisseur of fresh vegetables, perfectly cooked. She had a lively and pervasive curiosity and enjoyed considering things from many angles.
She is survived by her brother, Hugh G. Williams, of Round Pond; her daughter, Lucy G. Quimby, of Bangor, and Lucy’s husband, Geoffrey Gratwick; her son, Thomas B. Quimby, of Albany, N.Y.; her niece, Daphne Warren, of Saco, and Daphne’s husband Bill; her nephews, Roger Williams of Bremen and his wife Jacqueline, and Hugh D. Williams of Pemaquid and his wife Jane Benner; three grandchildren; four grand-nieces and nephews, and one great-grandchild.
Her family is deeply appreciative of the excellent care she received at Westgate Manor. A memorial service will be held in the spring.

Tibbetts, Richard
Aug. 8, 1928 - April 10, 2005
Richard Burton Tibbetts, 76, died April 10, at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.
Dick was born Aug. 8, 1928 in Boothbay Harbor, son of Raymond and Marion Tibbetts. He grew up in Boothbay and graduated from the Boothbay Region High School.
From 1947 to 1993 Dick worked as a Yacht Captain, and skippered the Balmy Days for several years. He worked in Maritime Industries and was the Harbor Pilot at Port Everglades, making 51 trips from Maine to Florida. He worked lobstering for a couple of years. In addition to his love for the ocean, Dick enjoyed the outdoors and taking trips in his R.V. He enjoyed building houses and was a skilled carpenter. He loved his home in West Boothbay Harbor.
Dick is survived by his wife of nine years, Marilyn L. Tibbetts of West Boothbay Harbor; his daughters, Linda Layton of Matthews, N.C., and Terri Marcello of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his sons, Mike and Mark Tibbetts of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; his step-sons, Richard Tracy Batteese of Freeport, and Gregory Batteese of Brunswick; his step-daughter, C. Lynn Vajda of Windham and 15 grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held Wed., April 13 6-8 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.
A funeral service will be held Thurs., April 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor. Rev. Sarah Foulger will officiate.

Rideout, Dorothy

Dorothy E. Rideout, 79, of Bath, died Oct. 9 at a Freeport Nursing Home.
She was born in Bath on Aug. 8, 1926, a daughter of Chester R. Sr. and Angie (Arsenault) Talbot.
She attended Bath schools and Morse High School. In 1960 she married Arthur E. Rideout and they made their home in Bath.
She enjoyed yard sales, Beano and especially loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Arthur E. Rideout Sr., on Sept. 8, 1999; daughter, Linda Richards in 1997; stepson, Emery A. Rideout in 2001; sister, Ruby Williams; and brother, Chester Talbot.
She is survived by sons, Emil V. Smith Jr. of Bath, and James D. Rideout of Lisbon; daughters, Joanne McDunnah of Southridge, Mass., Sandra Reed of Bath, Susan E. Hinds of Litchfield, and Debra A. Harrison of Westport Island; stepsons, Richard D. Rideout Jr. of Brunswick, Arthur E. Rideout Jr. of Brunswick, and Ernest Rideout of Whitman, Mass.; stepdaughters, Barbara Descoteaux of Sebago, and Carol Lab of Bath; brothers, Richard Talbot of Whitefield, and Robert Talbot of Brunswick; 12 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and one special friend, Rhonda Harvey of Bath.
Celebration of her Life 11 a.m., Sun., Oct. 16 at the American Legion Hall in Bath. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Bath at a later date.

Sidelinger, Charlotte
March 10, 1922 - Oct. 17, 2005
Charlotte L. Sidelinger, 83, of Dresden, passed away on Oct. 17 at MaineGeneral Medical Center- Thayer Unit, in Waterville, with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Albany, N.Y., on March 10, 1922, a daughter of Ralph and Ruth (White) Sturtevant.
She was a 1940 graduate of Amherst High School and had attended the University of Massachusetts.
On June 20, 1943 she married George G. Sidelinger in Wollaston, Mass., and they moved to Dresden on June 20, 1950. She retired from the State of Maine, Bureau of Taxation, in 1986 and for many years ran a used bookstore at her home called The Book Barn.
Charlotte liked rides to the ocean, reading, doing crossword puzzles and watching Boston Red Sox and Patriot games. She especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents, her twin brother Paul Sturtevant in 1987 and her sister Ruth Sturtevant in 1999.
She is survived by her husband George of 63 years; son Ken Sidelinger and fiancée Vicky Mastantuono of Armada, Mich.; daughter Jean Genthner and husband Ted of Waldoboro; son Peter Sidelinger and wife Mary of Webster, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two cousins.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Kennebec County Urology, Kennebec Dialysis Center, Augusta, MGMC, Augusta Unit, Timothy Hendrickson, and Dr. Charles Jacobs for the wonderful care of Charlotte.
At her request there will be no funeral service. Celebration of her life will be held in the spring.
