Carter, Charles
April 19, 1944 - August 12, 2002
Charles Hubert Carter of Jefferson, passed away Aug. 12 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was born a son of William and Clara Meservey Carter on April 19, 1944 in Damariscotta. He grew up in Jefferson attending the Jefferson Village School and continued his education at Lincoln Academy where he graduated in the Class of 1962.
While Charlie was in High School, he began working for Bond Manufacturing. On March 10, 1964, he married Sue Ellen Hilton and together they raised their family in Jefferson. Continuing to work for Bond Manufacturing, Charlie became the Plant Manager and was a fixture for the business for 40-years throughout four changes in ownership. The last change of ownership was to Rudy Garff who now runs, what is known as, The Science Source. Rudy said, Charlie was the backbone of his business.
Charlie enjoyed going to his camp on Damariscotta Lake. The camp is one of the oldest camps on the lake and was in shambles when he purchased it. Through hard working hands and devotion, the camp is now a beautiful place for his family to enjoy. Charlie enjoyed boating and sailing on the lake; however, his favorite thing to do was to cut his wood for the winter supply. The family farm once had over 100 acres and Charlie and his brothers would cut the needed wood to burn for the winter. His daughter, Denise, can remember being dragged along by her Dad to help bring in the wood.
Charlie has a mechanical mind, which helped to fix absolutely anything. He would bring in saw rigs and wood splinters and make them usable. He even fixed an old broken down bulldozer and used it to bring in his wood.
Corey said, his grandfather was a good one. He loved to go 4-wheeling with him, watching TV and can remember sitting in his grandfather’s jeep, (Charlie’s babysitter) watching while Charlie worked in the yard.
Sue Ellen will remember Charlie as a wonderful husband and provider who was also a wonderful father and grandfather.
He was predeceased by a son Michael Carter.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Sue Ellen Carter of Jefferson, daughter, Denise Carter Pierce and her husband Jeffrey of Damariscotta; a grandson, Corey Alan Wade of Damariscotta; a granddaughter, Danielle Marie Pierce of Damariscotta; two brothers, William C.
