George Cleaveland

VERA BEACH, FL - George H. Cleaveland Sr. of Sebastian, FL died on June 22, in a hospital at Vera Beach, FL of natural causes at the age of 75.
He was born in Norway on January 31, 1921, of parents Horace Lowell Cleaveland Jr. and Hazel Agnes (Bennett) Cleaveland of Norway.
He was predeceased by his mother and father; a sister Hazel E. Wertz of Roulette, PA and a grandson Andrew M. Cleaveland of Auburn.
He was a proficient swimmer and an avid baseball fan. He loved fishing in Maine's lakes and rivers.
Mr. Cleaveland was a WWII veteran. He served many years with the U.S. Border Patrol in several locations in the U.S.
After retirement he worked as an assistant manager for the May Co. in Chatsworth, CA.
He and his wife Vaslia (Betty) Macress Cleaveland retired to their new home in Sebastian, FL, where his dear wife died February, 1987.
Mr. Cleaveland had a most beautiful singing voice. He had many friends, and they and his family miss him greatly.
He is survived by five brothers, Sherwood A. Cleaveland, Sebastian, FL; Burton Y. Cleaveland, Chesterton, IN; Kenneth L. Cleaveland, Auston, PA; Floyd L. Cleaveland, Seymour, TN; Roland C. Cleaveland, Spearfish, SD; two sisters, Agnes M. Cleaveland Parker of Norway and Bessie L. Hartford of Elko, NV; a former wife, Evelyn L. (Johnson) Cleaveland Mixer of Auburn; one daughter, Mary (Cleaveland) Labonte of Lewiston; two sons, George H. Cleaveland Jr. and wife Pam of Poland and Sherwood A. Cleaveland and wife Colleen of Casco. He also had eight grandchildren.
Mr. Cleaveland was a Methodist, and he joined the Greek church in Fort Pierce, FL after he retired to Florida.
The family will be most thankful for memorials through the American Heart Association.
His burial site is in Fort Prince, FL.
Mr. Nicholas David Clements

LEWISTON - Nicholas David Clements, 65, of Woodstock, died Tuesday, December 8, 1998, at Central Maine Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born at Searsport, ME, on December 13, 1932, the son of Charles and Margaret (Littlefield) Clements. He was a graduate of the University of Maine, and later received his Master's Degree from Syracuse University.
He married the former Marta Rohde of Belfast in 1960, moving to the Woodstock area shortly thereafter.
He was veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He later taught at Norway High School, Woodstock High School, and Telstar Regional High School. I.W. Andrews and Son also employed him in South Woodstock for many years, working both with their ambulance and funeral home services.
He was service officer at the Jackson-Silver American Legion Post, a board member of the First Universalist Church of West Paris, and the self-proclaimed mayor of South Woodstock for several years. He enjoyed golfing, deer
hunting
, and fishing.
His wife, who was at his side when he passed on, survives him. He is also survived by their three sons, David P. and his wife Audrey Lazenby, of Birmingham, AL, Bruce G., and his wife Cynthia of Weare, NH, and Eric A. and his special friend Yvette Laro of Concord, NH, and five grandchildren, Carolyn, Peggy, and Julia of Birmingham, and Sarah and Kyle of Weare. Also surviving are his mother, Margaret of Swanville, ME; three brothers, John of West Enfield, Sherman and Stephen, both of Swanville and five sisters, Adelaide Gray and Rita Stone of Searsport, Fannie Clements-Brazier of Hancock, Cynthia Brasslett of Medway, and Judith Parker of Avon, CT. His father, Charles M. and his brother, Charles E, predeceased him.
Nick's kindness and humor touched everyone, and he will be missed by those who knew him. Friends are encouraged to share their favorite memories of him, either in writing or in person with the family.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 11 at the First Universalist Church of West Paris. Interment was on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Greenlawn Cemetery, Swanville.

Mr. James F. Cleveland

NORWAY- James F. Cleveland, 78, of Pleasant St, Norway, died peacefully Sunday, April 2, 2000, at Stephens Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer and with his family at his side.
He was born January 14, 1922 in Norway, the son of James C. and Ethel L. (Stanley) Cleveland.
He graduated for Norway High School in 1940.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served as a sergeant in the 780th Army Air Corps.
On March 30, 1943, he married Evelyn M. Greenlaw in Sioux Falls, SD and they just celebrated their 57th anniversary.
Upon discharge for military service in 1946, he returned to Norway where he was employed at C.B. Cummings for 17 years. He also worked for John Jacobsen as an apprentice carpenter. For the last 35 years, Mr. Cleveland was self-employed as a building contractor. He was semi-retired as a gentleman farmer, renovating and gardening seasonally at the family homestead in Waterford. He was also caretaker for several local cottages for many years.
He will be remembered for his many acts of kindness, his work ethic and his love of family.
He is survived by his wife of Norway; a son, James B. Cleveland and his wife Mary of Bridgton; a daughter, Jean Delamater and her husband James of Oxford; four sisters, Ruth Moody of Bath, Helen Morse of Norway, Betty Crockett of Norway and Ester Estes of Norway; two brothers, Ralph Cleveland of Norway and John Cleveland of South Paris; four grandchildren, Jennifer Cleveland, Jamie Roberts of Bridgton, Christopher Delamater and Matthew Delamater of Oxford; two great-grandchildren, Keisha Cleveland and Brittany Cleveland, both of Bridgton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Jolene Cleveland.
At Mr. Cleveland's request, there will be no visiting hours or services. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be sent to Opportunity Farm for Boys, P.O. Box 35, New Gloucester, ME 04260.
Nora Brewer Clifford

Nora Brewer Clifford, 79, of Boothbay Harbor, died Thursday, April 1 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.
Born April 27, 1919 in Boothbay Harbor, she was the daughter of Archie and Julia Alley Brewer. She grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools.
Mrs. Clifford was a homemaker. She also cleaned homes and worked at the Village Inn. She loved playing Bingo, going to yard sales, sewing, making quilts, embroidery, and making clothes for her family. She also liked to travel, and be around people, especially her family.
She was deceased by her husband Winfield Clifford who died in 1992, and by a daughter, Becky Davis, who died in 1994.
Survivors include two sons, Ronnie Clifford and Earl Clifford, both of Boothbay; a daughter, Judy Hodgdon of East Boothbay; four sisters; one brother; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
The funeral service was held on Monday, April 5 at Simmons, Harrington, & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. The Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin officiated. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery, Boothbay.

Mr. Robert C. Clough

HEBRON- Robert C. Clough, 80, of Hebron died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at his home.
He was born in Bethel on March 10, 1920, the son of Dorothy Clough Gordon.
He attended Bethel schools and graduated from South Paris High school in 1938.
He had worked at the South Portland shipyard, Oxford Pickle factory and retired from Hebron Academy in 1986.
He served the town of Hebron as Chairman of the Board of Selectmen for over 20 years, a selectmen for five years and a charter member of the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department which was formed in 1947.
Mr. Clough enjoyed
hunting
, fishing, camping, horse racing, and telling stories. He made his lifelong dream of going to Alaska.
Mr. Clough and his wife Annette recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Annette Lapham Clough, of Hebron; two sons and their wives, William and Joan Clough and Benjamin and Joanne Clough all of Hebron; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Sonny Trundy of Minot, Pam and Del Arey of Harrison; two brothers, Merle Gordon and Sidney and wife Roberta Gordon all from Norway; a sister, Edith Stevens of Canton; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, James David in 1947; two brothers, Winfield Gordon and Eddie Gordon and two sisters, Mary Stevens, and Beryl Gordon.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Norway Pine Grove cemetery in South Paris.
Family and friends attended a visitation Wednesday evening at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, South Paris.Donations in Mr. Clough's memory may be sent to the Stephens Memorial Hospital Memorial Fund, Norway, Maine 04268.
Carl D. Coburn

Canaan, Vermont Carl D. Coburn, 81, of Route 253, Canaan, Vermont died at the Coos County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown, NH, Tuesday, October 20, after a long illness.
He was born April 13, 1917, in Berlin, NH, the son of Ross and Maude (Emons) Coburn. He lived with his family in Crystal, NH, until the age of six when they moved to South Paris. He was a graduate of South Paris High School, the Class of 1935.
After graduation he worked at a toy shop, B &M Canning Factory, and Paris Manufacturing, all of South Paris. In April of 1945, he went into the U.S. Army and served until his discharge in July of 1946. He then went to work at the Wilner Wood Products of South Paris and worked for them until he moved to Canaan, VT in 1952 to work at the Beecher Falls Vermont Division of Ethan Allen, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Coburn worked as the saw filer for Wilner Wood Products and Ethan Allen, learning the trade from his father, and he passed on the trade of filing saws to his son. He was a Charter Member and Past President of the New England Saw Filers Association. He was also a member of the South Paris Volunteer Fire Department.
He was an avid
hunter
and fisherman, and he loved to play golf during his earlier years of life.
He is survived by his son, Clifford Coburn of Canaan, VT; his daughter, Susan (Coburn) Chappell of Clarksville, NH and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Muriel, in November of 1996.
There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the Canaan Village cemetery in Canaan, VT, with the Reverend Robert Bryan, pastor of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Canaan officiating.

James P. Coffin

NORWAY James P. Coffin, 76, died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at the Norway Living Center where he had been a resident. He was formerly from West Paris.
Born in Woodstock on September 16, 1921, he was the youngest son of the late Frank R. and J. Lavinia (Birney) Coffin. He received his education from the Woodstock schools.
On February 14, 1942 he married the former Ruby Poland
He served in Germany with the United States Army during WWII as a tank driver with the 741st Tank Battalion. In 1944 he was taken as a Prisoner of War. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Medal.
Following discharge from the service, he worked as a truck driver. Later he worked for many years for the Bridge Construction Corp. of Augusta as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. After retirement he continued to work summers for the company and helped resurface many of the local roads.
He was a former member of the Ring-McKeen American Legion Post of West Paris and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.
Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by a daughter Mrs. Norman (Jean) Millett of Greenwood; two sons, Charles of West Paris and Dale of Oxford; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, He was predeceased by four brothers, Alpheus, Arnold, Leroy, and Arthur and three sisters, Alice Goff, Eveline Barrett, and Doris Lawrence.
Graveside services were held on Friday, May 22 at the Greenleaf Cemetery, Milton Plantation. Those who wish may make donations in Mr. Coffin's memory to Tri-Town Rescue, P.O. Box 275, West Paris, ME 04289. Arrangements were handled under the care of the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock.
