Richard A. Canfield

Richard Andrew Canfield, 65, of Westport Island, died Sunday, October 3 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on May 19, 1934, he was the son of Edward and Veronica Dargis Canfield. He was a 1952 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth. He also attended college in the evening.
On April 23, 1955 he married Mary Ann Sherno.
Mr. Canfield worked in engineering for the Metex Company in Edison, New Jersey until retiring and moving to Westport Island. Upon moving to Westport Island, Mr. Canfield and his wife purchased and operated Canfield's Restaurant in Wiscasset.
He enjoyed painting and woodcarving. Mr. Canfield was a member of St. Mary's Church in Bath.
Surviving besides his wife of Westport Island, are two sons, Richard Canfield of Lawrence Harbor, New Jersey, and Jeffrey Canfield of South Amboy, New Jersey; two daughters, Barbara Ann Rhodes of Monroe, New Jersey, and Lisa Marie Meise of Augusta; one sister, Barbara Canfield Faynor of Keyport, New Jersey; and six grandchildren.
Visiting hours were held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5 from the Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Wednesday, October 6 from St. Mary's Church in Bath with the Rev. Joseph McKenna officiating. John A. Cannan

John A. Cannan, 79, of Auburn, died Friday, October 2.
Born in Fort Kent on August 28, 1919, he was the son of Assad and Annie Cannan. After graduating from Fort Kent High School, he began his career at the J.C. Penney Co. He was manager of the Penney Co. in Fort Kent, Augusta and Lewiston for thirty-two years and retired from the Lewiston store in 1979.
He also served his country in World War II as a Staff Sargeant in the Army.
For 50 years he was married to the former Elsie Takacs. Mr. Cannan was a lifetime member of the Rotary Club of America and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow. His many charitable causes included the Boy Scouts of America, the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club. After retirement, he and his wife wintered in San Bernardino, Calif.
Mr. Cannan was a Communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Auburn. His wife died previously on August 12, 1995.
Survivors include three daughters, Claudia Leighton of Boothbay, Kathleen Vachowski of Lovell and Joanne Bean of Scarborough; twin sons, Donald of Lewiston and David of Macomb, Michigan; one sister, Claudia Solman of San Bernadino, Calif.; a brother, Dr. Donald Cannan of San Bernardino, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Eric Harvey, Michael and Ryan Leighton, James and Emily Cannan, Adam and Aaron Vachowsli, and Kelsey and Zachary Bean.
A funeral was held at Sacred Heart Church in Auburn on Tuesday, October 6. Committal was in Gracelawn Memorial Park. Arrangements were by the Fortin Group Plummer & Merrill Funeral Home, Auburn.
Daniel Carter

Daniel Carter, 44, of Brunswick, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, August 10 at his home.
Born in Boothbay Harbor on March 31, 1955, he was the son of Carolyn Carter Brewer of Brunswick and the late Robert Carter.
Mr. Carter was employed by Sears for 18 years and later was a self-employed contractor.
After enjoying his family, he enjoyed playing his guitar, composing music and poetry and riding free on his Harley. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed life.
Survivors include his mother, Carolyn of Brunswick; a son, Shad R. Carter of Woolwich; a daughter, Tymbre H. Carter of Woolwich; his wife, Terry Carter of Brunswick; stepsons, Taylor, Joey and Alex Clavette of Brunswick and Jason Willey of Topsham; brothers, Arthur Carter of Boothbay Harbor and Brian Carter of Richmond; uncle, Robert B. Rice of Boothbay Harbor; a niece, Michelle Carter of Topsham; a nephew, Matthew Carter of Richmond; and many close and loyal friends.
A funeral was held Tuesday, August 17 at Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay. The Rev. Robert Dorr officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home.
Hartwell D. Carter

Hartwell DeLancy Carter, 80, of Bremen, was found dead at his home on Monday, October 18.
The son of Thomas Poland and Regina Collamore Carter, he moved from Bremen to Waldoboro at the age of four. He attended grade school in Bremen and high school in Waldoboro.
After high school he joined the Army and spent most of his four-year enlistment in Europe and Iceland. He was en route to Europe after the Battle of the Bulge when the war ended.
In 1945, he returned to Bremen and married the former Laura Murphy on Christmas Eve.
Mr. Carter worked on the fishing boats Mary Ann and Jacob Pike. He also worked at Sonny Hodgdon Shipyard, East Boothbay, and later at Gamage's Boatyard, South Bristol.
He enjoyed doing fine woodworking on the Appledore and other boats and also as a hobby at home. He was a gardener and was active in local organizations. He was a lifetime member of the King Solomon Masonic Lodge and the Waldoboro American Legion, commander of the Waldoboro Veterans of Foreign Wars post, and president of the Evergreen cemetery Association. He also called Beano games at the VFW and the American Legion. He was a member of the Bremen Union Church.
Mr. Carter was predeceased by his wife in 1987.
Survivors include one son, Joel of Lancaster, N.H.; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Lorraine) Simpson of San Diego, and Mrs. Stephen (Janet) Chase of Bristol; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held at Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro on Friday, October 22, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 23 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Medomak.
Donald U. Cassel

Donald U. Cassel of Rumney, New Hampshire, died Saturday, September 12 at DartmouthHutchcock Medical Center after a long battle with lymphoma.
Mr. Cassel was born in Philadelphia, Penn. and spent his summers on Capitol Island.
After graduating from Germantown Friends Schoo, he served inthe Army Air Corp. in World War II. Upon his return, he attended the Pennsylvania State University where he completed a B.S. degree in agronomy and animal husbandry.
For two years he was a dairy farmer in Coatesville, Penn. He then attended the Pennsylvania State University School of Business. Subsequently, he worked as a purchasing agent for 17 years.
In 1978, he moved with his family to Rumney, New Hampshire. He owned and operated Kelly Manufacturing Company where he made hardwood crutches.
Throughout his life, he continued to spend his summers on Capitol Island where he loved to sail. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener. He also enjoyed reading and bridge.
He chaperoned children in the local schools' ski programs and assisted with various community projects as a volunteer. He was an active member of the Starr King Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Adrina Cassel of Rumney, N.H.; two daughters, Loretta J. Mancino and Edna C. Miller, both of Plymouth, N.H.; a son, Donald E. Cassel of Danbury, Conn.; a sister, Dorothy E. Lane of Miineapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren, Alice C. Mancino, Kolby C. Miller and Lucy Corinne Miller; a niece and three nephews.
A memorial service was held at the Starr King Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Thursday, September 17.

Karl A. Cates

Karl Abbott Cates, 85, of Ware, Mass., died Thursday, November 26 in Quaboag on the Common in West Brookfield.
Born in Vassalboro, he was the son of William and Ruby (Abbott) Cates and had lived in Ware since 1952. He was a retired maintenance supervisor for the former Rindge Industries of Ware for many years, last working in 1979.
Mr. Cates had been Chief of the Vassalboro Volunteer Fire Department before coming to Ware. He had also been an overseer for American Woolen Company in Maine. He was a life member of the Neguemkeag Lodge of Masons #52 of Vassalboro and was a member of The Young Men's Club of Ware.
His wife of over 50 years, Norma (Shorey) Cates, died in 1997, and his son, Richard A. Cates, died in 1988.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Batsie of Ware and Ocean Point; four grandchildren; and three nieces.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 1 at the United Church of Ware, and burial was in the Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. L. Faye Chadbourne

SPRINGVALE - L. Faye Chadbourne, 47, died Monday morning, October 25, in the York County Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born in Bridgton, daughter of John and Phyllis Robinson Pike.
She attended Bridgton schools and graduated in 1970 from the first class at Lake Region High School in Naples.
She had worked as an assistant for Dewey Richards, MD, and as an optical assistant for N. Scott Ferguson. She moved from North Bridgton to Wells in 1990 and to Springvale in 1997.
She married Dennis A. Chadbourne December 23, 1970.
Surviving besides her husband of Springvale and her mother of North Bridgton are a son, Jason D. Chadbourne of Lyman; a daughter, Kristine F. Rogers of Biddeford; a brother, Dale R. Pike of Plainfield, VT; a sister, Gail A. Harmon of Waterford and two grandsons, Benjamin and Joshua Chadbourne of Lyman.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the North Bridgton Congregational Church.
Burial will be in the North Bridgton Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home in Bridgton,

Pauline A. Chamberlin

Pauline A. Chamberlin, 95, died on Thursday, November 18 at her home in Canton.
Born June 25, 1904 in Summerfield, NB, Canada
, she was the daughter of Ezra and Gertrude (Creed) Lunn.
She graduated from Waterville High School and was a graduate of Colby College in the class of 1926.
On September 3, 1929, she married Paul P. Chamberlin.
Mrs. Chamberlin taught school in Waterville, Winslow and at the Oak Grove School for Girls.
Following her retirement, she and her husband lived in East Boothbay during the summer and in Zephyr Hills, Florida during the winter months. They lived in the Clover Living Center in Auburn for several years, until her husband died in 1992. Following her husband's death, she moved to Canton near her son, Arthur.
Mrs. Chamberlin was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Pleasant Street Methodist Church, the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and the Auburn Methodist Church.
A daughter, Nancy Fitton died in 1997.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard and Shirley Chamberlin of Belgrade and Arthur and Anne Chamberlin of Canton. She was the beloved "Grammie by the boats" of 12 grandchildren. Other survivors include 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the Pleasant Street Methodist Church in Waterville on Friday, November 26 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park Street, Waterville.
