Waldo Brewer

Waldo ``Joe" Brewer, 84, died at his home in Boothbay Harbor on Friday, July 2.
Born August 3, 1914, in Boothbay Harbor, he was the son of Ralph and Sarah Murray Brewer. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School where he played football and baseball. After high school he played semi-pro baseball for six years.
On October 22, 1938, he married Alice May Lewis.
Mr. Brewer fished for a few years, then went to work for Central Maine Power Company where he worked his way up to line supervisor, retiring after 38 years of service.
He enjoyed
hunting. Five years ago he applied for a moose
hunting permit and shot an 800 lb. moose.
He was a member of the Boothbay Region Country Club where he won the golf championship for seven consecutive years, and was past president of the golf association in Boothbay.
Mr. Brewer was an avid fan of the Boothbay Region Seahawks football, basketball and baseball teams. He enjoyed his great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Harriet Bracy and Gertrude Curtis.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Alice Brewer of Boothbay Harbor; two daughters, Sharon and her husband Dennis Rice of East Boothbay, and Sara Frizzell of Norton, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Robert Frizzell of Norton, Mass., Elizabeth Durgan and Matt Rice, both of Boothbay Harbor, and Tim Rice of East Boothbay; three great-grandchildren; and two nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held on Wednesday, July 7 at the Evergreen cemetery in Boothbay. Al Robert officiated. Arrangements were by Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
Myrtle Brewer

Myrtle Brewer, 86, of Wiscasset, died Monday, July 26, at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.
Born on April 30, 1913, she was the daughter of Frank and Mildreth (Risteen) Bean.
She attended Wiscasset schools and Wiscasset Academy. In 1945 she married Ronald V. Brewer and they resided in Wiscasset.
Mrs. Brewer enjoyed cooking, going for rides with her husband and was a loyal Redskins fan.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald V. Brewer, on July 22, 1993; one son, David A. Reed, on June 3, 1976; three half-brothers, Gordon Grover, Melvin Grover and Charles Grover; and one half-sister, Alma Talbot.
Survivors include two sons, Don I. Brewer and Arthur Reed, both of Wiscasset; two daughters, Josephine Reed of Wiscasset, and Hortense Blanchard of Rumford; one half-brother, John Grover of Massachusetts; one half-sister, Frances DiPerri of Wiscasset; numerous grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 30 at Greenlawn cemetery in Wiscasset with the Rev. Peg Grzelkowski officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal Street, Wiscasset.
Arnold Brewer Jr.

Arnold "Arnie" Brewer Jr., 76, of Boothbay Harbor, died Monday, March 27 at his home. born December 11, 1923 in Boothbay Harbor, the son of Arnold Sr. and Madeliene Auld Brewer. He graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School in 1941, and received varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball all four years. In 1942 he graduated from Maine Central Institute prep school. He lettered in football, basketball and baseball at M.C.I. He pitched for the MCI baseball team in a victory over the undefeated Maine freshman team in their last game of the season. Also, he attended the University of Maine, Class of 1950, and graduated from Burdett College in Boston where he was president of his class. In November 1942, Mr. Brewer enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. For over two years he served in India, flying the "Hump" as a flight radio operator. He also served as communication chief while attaining the rank of Staff Sargent. On January 3, 1946 he was discharged. In August 1949, he married Elizabeth Louise Hill. He was a member of the Charles E. Sherman, Jr., Post #36 American Legion, V.F.W., "Hump" Pilots Association, DAV, National Association of Postmasters, Nor'Easters Barbershop Choir, Boothbay Region Country Club, and the Boothbay Harbor United Methodist Church where he served as lay leader, treasurer, choir member, and was chairman of the executive board, finance committee. He was also a member of the YMCA, Alumni Association, and Dirigo Horse and Pony Club. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Mid-Coast United Way. In the mid-1950s, he was named the Boothbay Region Citizen of the Year by the Boothbay Region Jaycees. He was past president of the P.T.A., Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club, and Boothbay Region Scholarship Fund Association. He served as chairman of the Boothbay Harbor School Board and CSD Union School Board. He was on the committee to study the feasibility of consolidating the towns of Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor in the late 1950s. He was chairman of the Democratic town committee and was the first Democrat in 70 years from the Boothbay Region to serve as State Representative in the 114th Legislature. He was president of the Boothbay Harbor Chamber of Commerce and assisted in the implementation of its first paid director. In 1951, Mr. Brewer went to work for Beneficial Finance Co., in Waltham, Mass. In 1953, he returned to Maine where he was associated with his father at Brewer's Market. In 1962, he was appointed Postmaster of Boothbay Harbor by President John F. Kennedy and served until his retirement in 1984. For 13 years he worked part-time during the summers at the Boothbay Harbor Inn. Recently, he was named one of the Region's 10 Most Interesting People. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Hill Brewer of Boothbay; a son, Mark Arnold Brewer of Boothbay Harbor; two daughters, Stephanie Slocum of Hudson, Ohio and Deborah Tarr of Gray; a sister, Alice Lee of Zephyrhills, Florida; and 10 grandchildren. Visiting hours were held on Wednesday, March 29 at the Charles E. Sherman, Jr. American Legion Post in Boothbay. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 30 at the American Legion Post in Boothbay. Rev. Allan Wells-Goodwin will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oceanview cemetery in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Charles E. Sherman, Jr. American Legion Post #36, c/o parking lot pavement fund, P.O. Box 874, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Arrangements are under the direction of Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay.

Lawrence Russell Brewer Jr.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lawrence Russell Brewer Jr., 55 of Manassas, VA, died Friday, March 19, at Walter Reed Army Center in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Brewer was born in Denver, CO and spent most of his boyhood in Beverly, MA. He moved to South Paris at age 14, where he resided for a number of years. He also spent three years at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany and has lived in the Manassas area for the last 20 years.
Mr. Brewer was a Master Sergeant, serving in the U.S. Army for 19 years. He was an Army Security Agent during the Viet Nam Conflict, and throughout his career, was stationed in Thailand, Turkey, and Germany twice.
Mr. Brewer worked for Halifax and Dyncorp in Springfield for 15 years as an Electronic Technician. Among his many achievements, he helped to install conduits and computer systems in the DIA building.
Mr. Brewer was a volunteer for Appalachian Search and Rescue and was an avid
hunter, fisherman and archer.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lucy D. (Prout) Brewer of Manassas, VA; his parents, Elizabeth F. Brewer and Lawrence R. Brewer Sr, both of South Paris; two daughters, Bonnie J. Brewer of Sitka, AK and Staci L. Elliott of Manassas, VA; two sisters, Janice E. Clausen of Chesapeake, VA and Sharon E. MacDonald of Gray; and one granddaughter, Jennifer E. Elliott of Manassas.
A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, March 21, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Manassas with the Reverend Carol S. Bookwalter officiating. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 27 at 3 p.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 21 Main St., South Paris.

LEWISTON - Wilma I. Briggs,86 of Mechanic Falls died Monday morning at St. Marguerite d'Youville Pavillion.
She was born in Raymond,October 25,1913 the daughter of Rufus and Gertrude Edwards Parker.She was raised from the age of 3 by her grandparents Myra and Alfred Taylor.She attended Mechanic Falls schools and had worked as a waitress, in shoe shops, as a telephone operator and for 10 years was a ward clerk at Central Maine Medical Center.She was a member of Tri Town Senior Citizens, Horizon 55 and Covenant 50. She enjoyed dancing, beano, puzzles and playing cards.In 1938 she married Merle Briggs who died in 1979.
Survivors include 2 daughters and their husbands Jacqueline and C. Ray Bunker of Mechanic Falls and Donnan and Elliott King of Lewiston, 5 grandchildren Ronald Bunker, Pamela Bois, Michael King, Robert Stuart Jr. and Deborah Moyer, 5 step grandchildren,10 great grandchildren, a daughter in law Clara Stuart of Westminster, Vermont,1 sister Velma Pride of Heritage Manor, No.Windham. Mrs. Briggs was predeceased by a son Robert Stuart Sr. and a brother Lloyd Parker.
Family and friends may attend graveside services Thursday at 11 a.m. at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorial gifts in her memory to Mechanic Falls Rescue Association, P.O. Box 191, Mechanic Falls. Dorothy F. Brinck

NORWAY - Dorothy F. Brinck, 86, of Norway died Tuesday February 24, 1998, at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center. She was born in Bethel on October 2, 1911, the daughter of Perley and Elizabeth Kennaugh Flanders.
She was educated in Bethel schools. She had worked as a nurses aide and a cook at the Andrews Nursing Home. She was a member of the Oxford Grange and a life member of the Bethel Historical Society. She had lived in the Norway area most of her life.
She married Ernest W. Brinck on May 21,1932, and he died on October 21, 1964.
She is survived by six nieces, Patricia Barker of Bolsters Mills, Ann Flanders, Shirley Baur, Lorraine Staples, and Winona Whitman all of Florida, and Alberta Brett of Otisfield; one nephew, Stanley Flanders of Florida. She was pre-deceased by a nephew, Albert E. Flanders Jr., and a brother, Albert E. Flanders, Sr.
Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Pine Grove cemetery in West Bethel. The time and date will be announced later. Arrangements are under the direction of the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway.
Virginia J. Brooks

Virginia Jerguson Brooks, 90, of Capitol Island and Longmeadow, Mass., died Friday, August 28 at her summer home on Capitol Island.
Born in Medford, Mass. on October 2, 1907, she was the daughter of Philip and Cora Fletcher Jerguson.
Mrs. Brooks graduated from Medford High School in Medford, Mass., and attended Emerson College in Boston, Mass.
In 1915 she came to the Boothbay region at the age of eight and went to school here the winter of 1916 when her father rented an apartment in Boothbay Harbor to escape an epidemic in Medford. She and her sister, the late Thelma McCarthy, summered on Capitol Island beginning in 1916, the year her father built a cottage there. She spent most of her girlhood summers on Capitol Island, where she made many close friends. In 1927 she married Clarence R. Brooks, and continued to spend each summer on Capitol Island.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence R. Brooks, in 1970.
Survivors include a son, Philip A. Brooks of East Longmeadow, Mass.; twins, Alan F. Brooks of Simsburg, Conn. and Ellen Brooks Baldwin of Manhattan, N.Y.; a son, Richard C. Brooks of Milton, Mass.; a daughter, Barbara Brooks Benson of Unionville, Ind.; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A funeral and celebration of her life will be held September 3 at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Longmeadow, Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Y.W.C.A. of Western Mass., 120 Maple Street, Springfield, MA 01103.

Mrs. Glennis E. Brooks

SOUTH PARIS - Glennis E. Brooks, 80, died on Saturday, December 19, at the Market Square Healthcare, where she had been a resident since August 19, 1996.
She was born in Augusta on September 23, 1918, the daughter of Melvin G. and Roxanna Fossett Gray.
She was educated in Hallowell and lived there until her marriage to Albert Henley in July of 1937. They divorced in 1950.
On February 25, 1961, she married Francis E. Brooks, and they had lived in Bryant Pond since then. She worked for many years doing housework in the Berlin, NH area.
Her husband of 37 years, Francis E. Brooks of Bryant Pond and four daughters, Margaret Roberts of Bryant Pond, June York of Bethel, Hilda Holmes of Buckfield and Rena Dudley of West Paris survive her. She had 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Ten brothers and sister predeceased her.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 22, at the Andrews Funeral Home, South Woodstock; Interment in the Lakeside Cemetery, Bryant Pond.
