Roy C. Blaney
1999-07-22

Roy C. Blaney, 76, died Friday, July 16 at his home in Southport.

Blaney was born in Boston on December 19, 1922 and raised in West Roxbury, Mass. He began working with boats at a young age at Flyer's Boatyard in Provincetown, Mass. where his family summered and eventually moved. Boats and the ocean quickly developed into what would be a life-long passion for Blaney.

During World War II Blaney served in the Coast Guard, tending Minot Light off of Scituate, Mass. as well as being stationed in Portland. Following the war he returned to Truro on Cape Cod where he and Dave Foster, who would later teach at the Bath Apprentice Shop, started a boatbuilding shop. Shortly thereafter he met Anne Perisho and married in West Harwich, Mass. in 1952.

The newlyweds left Cape Cod deciding on the coast of Maine where Blaney had spent time in the Coat Guard and had spent much time sailing. On a drive up the coast they settled on Boothbay Harbor with its thriving marine industry as the ideal location to start a boatbuilding business and begin raising a family. They bought a small waterfront home from fisherman Raymond Brewer on Atlantic Avenue and erected a boatshop in which Blaney began building his boats.

Over the next 30 years Blaney single-handedly built and launched 25 wooden boats at his East Side location. Though mostly sailboats, he also built two powerboats for clients. He became well known as a catboat builder, building five of the traditional Cape Cod style sailboats, but also built a wide array of other designs.

The last boat built by Blaney at his East Side shop was perhaps the largest overall, a roomy 37' ketch, Jenny Ives. The boat's design was the result of a collaboration between Blaney and naval architect Thomas Gilmer who adapted a previous design of his to Blaney's requests. The boat was to be for Blaney himself. Following the competition and launch of the Jenny Ives, Blaney moved aboard with his wife and youngest son after selling the house and shop in order to finance the boat's construction. Plans to cruise the boat to the Caribbean did not work out and after two years of living aboard, Blaney sold the Jenny Ives to The Wooden Boat School for use as an instructional vessel.

In 1983 Blaney purchased a home on Southport and erected another boatshop with a client awaiting yet another boat. However, shortly after completing the shop, Blaney's productivity was greatly curtailed by macular degeneration which destroyed a great deal of his eyesight, forcing him to turn away potential clients and officially retire. In addition, the subsequent decline of his wife's health due to kidney failure consumed much of his time and concern. Still, Blaney was able to complete over several years one final boat for himself out of the Southport boatshop: Molly Bloom, a 25' Fenwick Williams designed catboat which was launched in 1995.

As much as building, Blaney loved to sail. What brought him to the Maine coast initially, continued to inspire his whole life. Blaney loved cruising the coast in the boats he owned and built and would often do so well into the cold months of the year. He also loved the community of fishermen and boatbuilders of the Boothbay Region.

Blaney was an avid rower. Rowing to Mouse or Burnt Island to select a tree with his children was a week-before-Christmas ritual. In more recent years Blaney could often be seen rowing his ``wherry," a 16' White Bear, from Southport to Boothbay Harbor to pick up the Sunday paper or to one of the region's islands with his wife.

Over the years Blaney has been featured in Wooden Boat Magazine and was recently inducted into the Maine Boatbuilders Hall of Fame at the Maine Boat Show in Portland. His boats have found homes in ports around the country.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Blaney of Southport; daughter, Joan B. Cook of Phippsburg; two sons, Aaron Blaney of Southport and Eben Blaney of Portland; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 31 at 1 p.m. at the Blaney Boatshop on the Cross Road, Southport. It will be a Quaker service in which guests are invited to share thoughts and memories of Blaney or simply listen to recollections of others. Anyone in the region or beyond acquainted with Blaney and his work over the years is welcome to attend.
