Thomas S. Dunn
YORK - Thomas S. Dunn, 64, of 113 Scotland Bridge Road, York, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at York Hospital.
He was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on Oct. 26, 1940, the son of Everett A. and Jane (Waldorf) Dunn and was a graduate of Rutgers Prep in New Brunswick.
Tom received a bachelor of liberal arts degree from Upsala College in New Jersey and a masters degree in business from Golden Gate University.
He had served as an officer in the U.S. Navy as an aviator aboard E1-B planes providing anti-submarine reconnaissance in the Mediterranean during the Vietnam War.
He moved to York in 1975 and worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the Computer Security and Network Department, retiring in 2003, after 28 years of service. After retirement, he continued working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for EDS Corporation, a Naval Department subcontractor. He was also a well-known instructor at the Portsmouth campus of Southern New Hampshire University, where he taught information technology for many years.
He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. He was known for his love of his family. He enjoyed history and genealogy research, pickerel fishing, working on old cars and playing the banjo. He also continued his love of flying and maintained his private pilot’s license.
Survivors include his wife, Annabelle (Black) Dunn of York; one son, Brian Dunn and his wife, Welvy, of York; one daughter, Sarah Pucko and her husband, Matthew, of York; a grandson, Liam Dunn of York; his mother, Jane Dunn of Sturbridge, Mass.; two brothers, Jim Dunn of Sturbridge, Mass., and Alton Dunn of Seaside, N.J.; one sister, Mrs. Bob (Evelyn) Norland of Cranberry, N.J.; and nieces, nephews and countless friends.
A funeral Mass was held Monday, Jan. 17 at St. Christopher Church, York Street, in York. Interment was in First Parish Cemetery, York. John V. Mackie
MONROEVILLE, Ala. - John Victor Mackie, 80, of Monroeville, Ala., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005.
After graduating from York High School in 1942, he joined the U.S. Air Force and retired as a lieutenant colonel after 30 years of service. In 1973, he assisted with the establishment of the Federal Energy Administration. Five years later, he joined Georgia Pacific and the American Plywood Association as a wood products plant inspector for the southeastern United States.
He became an ordained Baptist minister and for several years served as the host of the Sunshine Christian Outreach Radio Program in southeastern Alabama. Since 1946, he was a member of the St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge No. 198 of York, and he is a past master of Masonic Lodge 3 of Monroeville, Ala. He was a 32nd degree Mason in both the Scottish Rite and York Rite bodies. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 61 of Monroeville, Ala., and a member of Southside Baptist Church of Monroeville and attended services at Monroeville First Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marguerite (Barnhill) Mackie in 1992 and by two daughters, Emma Schoff and Sherrie Spencer and a son, Barry Douglas "Buddy" Mackie.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Monroeville, Ala.; a son, Duncan Mackie and his wife, Nancy, of Dunnellon, Fla.; grandchildren, Jennifer Harpin of Waterboro, Maine, Matthew Schoff of Tucson, Ariz., Sydney Ann Gozzi of Suffield, Conn., Andrew Spencer of Brooklyn, N.Y., Hannah Rimensberger of Hamilton Mont., Felicia Petty of Melbourne, Fla., Cara Mackie of Tampa, Fla., and Duncan Ian Mackie of Dunnellon, Fla.; sons-in-law, David Spencer of Springfield, Mass. and Richard "Bim" Schoff of York.
Visiting hours are Saturday, Jan. 29, at 10:30 a.m. to noon with a Masonic Service at 10:30 a.m. and funeral and committal services at 12 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, in York. Francis Noel Perry
NAPLES, Fla. - Surrounded by family, Francis N. Perry died at his home in Bentley Village, Naples, Fla., on Monday, Jan. 17, 2005.
Born and raised in Bristol, R.I., he was the beloved husband of the late Marcia Gifford Perry, his high school sweetheart whom he married in 1946. He was the son of the late Frank and Anna (August) Perry.
He graduated from Bristol Senior High School in 1942 and the University of Rhode Island in 1946. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean conflict. He moved to Amherst, N.H., in 1967.
He was the general manager of Buttonwood Dairy in Warren, R.I., in the 40's and early 50's, the president of the Rhode Island Milk Dealers Association from 1959 to 1960 and the president of Dairy Council of Southeastern New England in 1965.
During this time, he was active in the Bristol Rotary Club, serving as its president in 1964 and 1965. In New Hampshire, he remained active in the Rotary Club, serving as its president from 1978 to 1979 and district chairman in 1980. He received his 40-year pin in 2004 and was twice the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, which provides monetary scholarships to students studying abroad.
Appointed by former Gov. John H. Notte, he served as the director of the Department of Agriculture and Conservation for the state of Rhode Island in 1961 and 1962.
He was chairman of the Bristol Fourth of July Parade in 1959 and 1960, and chief of staff for the parade in 1965. He was master of ceremony for 15 years at the Amherst, N.H., July 4 festivities, from 1974 through 1989.
Acting on the recommendation of Sen. John Pastore of Rhode Island in 1963, President John F. Kennedy appointed Mr. Perry for a special two-month assignment with the Agency for International Development evaluating Peace Corps personnel.
In 1967, he moved to Amherst, N.H., to serve as the national sales director of Golden Guernsey Milk, located in Peterborough, N.H. In 1971, he began his association with National Life Insurance Co. where he remained employed until 2004. During this time, he served on various boards and councils in the insurance industry. In 1988 and 1989, he was president of the New Hampshire State Life Underwriters, and in 1991 he earned the New Hampshire Association of Life Underwriters Distinguished Life Underwriter of the Year Award.
From 1987 through 1990, he was a member of The Bean Foundation, a philanthropic organization in New Hampshire and served as its chairman in 1990. In 1988, he was a board member for the Milford, N.H., American Stage Festival.
He was a selectman in Amherst, N.H., for 12 years, serving as its chairman for three years. In 1991 and 1992, he was the Amherst school moderator. From 1972 through 2003 he was the bail commissioner in Amherst, N.H.
He is survived by Marcia E. Perry of Naples, Fla.; Marklyn P. Champagne of East Greenwich, R.I.; F. Noel Perry of the San Francisco Bay Area, Calif.; Michaela Perry of York; Elizabeth Morriss of Kamuela, Hawaii; Lisa Franke of Jacksonville, Fla; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Jane P. Castro and Anne P. O'Donnell of Bristol, R.I., and the late Virginia Howard.
A graveside service with military honors was held Saturday, Jan. 22, at St. Mary's cemetery in Bristol, R.I. In lieu of flowers, one can remember Mr. Perry with a contribution to the Marcia Gifford Perry Scholarship Fund, care of The Milford Rotary Club, Box 618, Milford, N.H., 03055. Bruce Edward Wentworth
STRATHAM, N.H. - Bruce Edward Wentworth, 51, a former resident of Cape Neddick, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 17, 1954, in Brunswick, Maine, the son of Paul and Annie Elizabeth (Libby) Wentworth. He graduated from Freeport High School and attended college in New Hampshire, receiving a degree in business administration.
Mr. Wentworth served his country as a United States Marine, retiring after 20 years with the rank of sergeant major in the mid-1990s.
He was the manager of the fishing department at the Kittery Trading Post in Kittery and a member of the Elks in York.
Mr. Wentworth enjoyed fishing,
hunting and most of all, spending time with his family - especially his two grandchildren - Alex and Lauren. He was a loving son, father, grandfather and brother. He was engaged to Lori Breard-Weeden of Stratham, N.H.
Mr. Wentworth was predeceased by his mother; brother, William; and sister, Patricia Larue.
Survivors include his father, of Cape Neddick; fiancee, Lori Breard-Weeden of Stratham, N.H.; three daughters, Anne and her husband, Vinh Tran, of North Andover, Mass., Kelly Wentworth of Mystic, Conn., and Hallie Weeden of Stratham, N.H.; a son, Corey Wentworth of Freeport, Maine; a brother, Robert and his wife, Susan Wentworth, of Florida; his sisters, Margaret Bowden of Cape Neddick, Gail and her husband, Tom McClymont, of Readfield, Maine, Pamela and her husband, Donald Ferland, of Cape Neddick; a sister-in-law, Takeko Wentworth of Chelsea, Maine; grandchildren, Alex and Lauren Tran of North Andover, Mass.; and his dog, Mickey.
Visiting hours were Tuesday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home at 91 Long Sands Road in York. Interment will be private.
Lawrence W. Brow
OGUNQUIT - Lawrence Whitcomb Brown, 72, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. at York Hospital. At his side were his sons: Sam of Casco, Eric of Waterville and Hutch of Old Orchard Beach.
He was born on Feb. 15, 1932, in Boston, the son of Lawrence and Margie Brown. He served his country as a U.S. Marine on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saipan in the early 1950s.
He worked as a circulation supervisor at Framingham State College from 1980 to 1995 in Framingham, Mass.
Larry, as he was affectionately known by all, was a lover of birds and the outdoors, he enjoyed idling away the hours by the Ogunquit beach, loved listening to public radio, and rediscovered his love for the Red Sox in the last few years of his life. The World Series victory gave him pleasure.
He drew particular joy from his vicarious participation in his three sons’ lives.
He was predeceased by his mother, Margie; his father, Larry; and his brother and sister, Ronnie and Beverly.
Survivors include his afore-mentioned three sons and their mother, Chris Hudson; his daughters-in-law, Amy and Erin; his beautiful grandchildren, Morgan, Luke, Max and Molly; his sister, Barbara; his nieces, Jennifer, Tracy and Lisa Allen; his nephews, Chris Allen and Andrew Keesan; and also by his cat, Cat.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 5 at Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, in York. Visiting hours will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5 at the funeral home. Frederick L. Neary Jr.
NEEDHAM, Mass. - Mr. Frederick Leo Neary Jr., 48, died at his sister’s home in Needham following a long illness.
Born in Boston on May 31, 1956, he was a beloved son of the late Frederick L. and Bernadette T. (Coffin) Neary.
He was a graduate of Medford High School and had been a longtime resident of Medford and Needham, Mass., and York for the past 2½ years. Mr. Neary was a snow and ice engineer for the Massachusetts Highway Department for many years. He loved his lobster boat and loved lobstering in and around York.
He also enjoyed spending his free time at York Beach, going to Foxwoods and playing scratch tickets. He also loved his Budweiser, especially with his many friends at the Irish Yale House in Dedham, Mass.
Mr. Neary will be sorely missed by his loving sisters, Bernadette A. Neary-Boder and her husband Robert Boder of Needham, Mass. and Patricia C. Barnstead of York; brothers, Martin W. Neary of Lynn, Mass., and Thomas B. Neary of York; brother-in-law, Sib Barnstead; 11 nieces and nephews and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
His funeral was conducted by the Beals-Geake-Magliozza Funeral Home, 29 Governors Ave., in Medford, Mass. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Harry Riback
YORK - Harry Riback, 94, died Friday, Jan. 28 at his residence in York.
He was born in Boston, on Aug. 13, 1910, a son of Harry and Annie Riback.
Harry was a longtime restaurateur in York, his daughter continues on with the York Beach establishment now known as Sandy’s Purple Palace. In 1956, Harry, along with several other York businessmen, helped to establish York Hospital.
Harry was predeceased by his wife, Rose (Butter) Riback, in 2002.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Wilson of York; two granddaughters, Deborah Anne Wilson of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Pamela Joy Wilson of Dracut, Mass.

Benjamin David Wholey
CHELMSFORD, Mass. - The many family and friends of David and Katie (Stiling) Wholey of York, formerly of North Chelmsford, Mass., will be saddened to learn of the death of their infant son, Benjamin David Wholey, who died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Lowell General Hospital.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Joseph Wholey of York; his paternal grandparents, Tim and Joyce Wholey of North Chelmsford; maternal grandparents, Kathleen Stiling of Saco and David and Cynthia Stiling of Shirley, Mass.; paternal great-grandmother, Annie Knox of North Chelmsford; maternal great-grandparents, Patricia Leavitt of North Chelmsford and Tom and Kay Stiling of Westford, Mass.; paternal great-grandparents, Donald and Mary Wholey of York; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Family and friends attended the Dolan Funeral Home and a funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church in on Saturday, Jan. 29, in Chelmsford, Mass. Herbert Burger Jr.
HARTWELL, Ga. - Herbert Lee Burger Jr., 88, of 314 Stillwood Drive, Hartwell, formerly of York, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Hart County Hospital.
Born on March 13, 1916, in Vesper, Kan., he was the son of the late Herbert L. Burger Sr. and Pearle Gertrude Luff Burger. He was a retired hospital administrator, member of the American Legion of Hartwell Post 109 and a member of the Hartwell First Presbyterian Church. He retired with 20 years of service from the U.S. Navy with the rank of HMC and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Johnson Burger; three sons, Fredrick Burger of Arvada, Colo., Charles Burger of Louviers, Colo., and David Pursell of Lavonia, Ga.; three daughters, Raeleen Finn of Melbourne, Fla., Libby Mears of Sitka, Alaska, and Judy Marshall of Naperville, Ill.; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Priscilla Longley Burger and a son, Herbert L. Burger III.
Mr. Burger’s wishes were to be cremated and no services are planned. Memorials may be made to: American Legion Post 109, P.O. John Randall Harmon
LIMINGTON - John Randal* Randy" Harmon, 51, of 598 Cape Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at the Central Maine Medical Center surrounded by his loving wife and family after a long illness.
He was born in Portland on Dec. 9, 1953, a son of Susan Randall Harmon and the late John E. Harmon Jr. He graduated from Bonny Eagle High School in 1972. He worked at Valcourt’s Auto in Arundel for some time, and has worked for Bruce Haley at Haley Farms for 15 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Limington.
Randy’s close cousins and friends referred to him as "Great White." He enjoyed
hunting, the outdoors and county fairs. He was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed working on Garry Johnson’s Pro Stock race car.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Small Harmon of Limington; his mother, Susan Harmon of Limington; his son, Craig Harmon of Biddeford; two daughters, Amanda Morse of York and Amy Harmon of Biddeford; a brother, Kevin Harmon of Biddeford; three sisters, Melody Price and his brother-in-law Steven of Limington, Deborah Weber of Florida and Linda Rhodes of Limington; several loving cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
There will be visiting hours on Friday, Feb. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the York Funeral Chapel, 71 Maple St., in Cornish. A graveside ceremony will be in the spring.
