Robert Masi
YORK - Robert "Bob" Masi, a devoted father and longtime youth athletic coach, died of cancer Tuesday night, March 30, 2004, at his home surrounded by his sons, Joseph, Michael and Eric, and wife of 27 years, Constance "Connie" (Plowman) Masi. He was 49.
He was born in Cambridge, Mass., attended Arlington, Mass., schools and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
A resident of York for 21 years, he coached basketball and soccer for more than two decades in the town. For 12 years he coached the York High School junior varsity basketball team. At the same time he served on the board of the York Soccer Club for five years as well as coaching competitive club soccer teams. His illness could not keep him from his love of kids and coaching, as he volunteered to coach freshmen soccer and basketball.
Until his illness, Mr. Masi held multiple positions with York Hospital during his 12-year tenure, including facilities manager. His work ethic was contagious. He was integral in helping to establish the operations of the Wells Urgent Care.
He always found the time to attend all of his sons’ soccer games; Joseph’s at Stonehill College, Michael’s at Bates College and Eric’s at the University of New Hampshire. He was extremely proud of his sons’ accomplishments on the soccer field, but even prouder of the adults they have become. Despite having cancer, he was not one to complain - joking and laughing with friends during many rounds of chemotherapy and months of dialysis.
Recently, he told his family that he had enjoyed the past 2½ years as much as any time of his life, since spending time with family and friends was his highest priority.
Some of his fondest memories were of summer days at York’s Harbor Beach. His calm, caring demeanor and unselfishness earned him the love and admiration of all those who knew him. He was a father figure and mentor to more than just his sons because of his genuine concern and dedication to others.
In addition to his sons and wife, Mr. Masi leaves his mother, Ann Albano Masi of Arlington; brothers Paul Masi and his wife Valerie of Sagamore Beach, Mass., and Stephan and his wife Mary of Monmouth; in-laws, Warren and Elizabeth Plowman of Lake Wales, Fla., and York; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Guido Masi.
