Mae Margaret (Fraser) West
BERWICK - Mae Margaret (Fraser) West, 78, of Sweetser Street, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born April 11, 1925, in Clinton, Mass., the daughter of James and Zephina (Chute) Fraser.
She graduated from Clinton High School and the New England School of Accounting in Worcester, Mass. She was secretary to the president of the Paul Revere Life Insurance Co., in Worcester before her marriage in 1949.
Later she was a secretary in the alumni office at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.; secretary to the manager of the New Haven Clock Co., in New Haven, Conn.; and in later years a church secretary for St. John’s United Methodist Church in Dover, N.H.
Mrs. West was a den mother for Pack 180, a co-leader for the Brownies at First Parish Church, leader of a 4-H Club youth group, and a member of the Tolend Road Extension Club.
She enjoyed playing bridge and for many years played with friends in Dover. She sang with the choir at St. John’s for several years, and sang in the Christmas Messiah Chorus at First Parish. She was also an avid reader.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover, N.H., with the Rev. Anne Robertson, pastor of St. John’s United Methodist Church of Dover, officiating.
Relatives and friends may call at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, Dover, one hour prior to the memorial service from noon to 1 p.m.
Interment will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick, at a later date.

Martin J. Poulin
PORTSMOUTH N.H. - Martin J. Poulin, 79, of 65 Fields Road, died Wednesday March 10, 2004, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long illness.
Born in St. Martin, Quebec, on July 27, 1924, he was the son of Romain and Exelia Poulin. He grew up in Waterville and had been a resident of the Seacoast since 1972.
He was a supervisor for many years for G.M. Crocetti, a large ceramic tile installer based in New York City. After moving to the Seacoast he was the owner of the Four Seasons Restaurant in York in the mid-70s. He then went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and retired in 1986. In his retirement he volunteered for many years for Meals on Wheels.
Martin was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church and was a longtime usher for the church.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Virginia (Caccamo) Poulin; sons Mark Poulin of Wells, and Martin Poulin and wife Pamela of Newfields; grandchildren Marcella, Olivia, Katrina, and Michael Dennis Poulin; and sisters Cecile Vigue and Jeannine Delaware, both of Fairfield. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by a son, Dennis Poulin in 1963.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church last Saturday. Memorials may be made to St. Catherine Church 845b Woodbury Ave. Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.
James Alton Bowdoin
WINSLOW - James Alton Bowdoin, 69, of Winslow, peacefully went to be with his wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Sunday, March 14.
He was born in Biddeford, July 22, 1934, the son of Edgar A. and Irma (Chappell) Bowdoin of Kennebunk. He graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1952 where he played varsity football, was captain of the track team, and vice president of his class. He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1956 and was battalion administrator his senior year. Upon graduation, he received his Navy commission and was assigned to Submarine Squadron 12 and served aboard the USS Bushnell. During the Cuban Missile Crisis he served at Atlantic Fleet Headquarters as a senior naval liaison officer to the Army. He also served as officer in charge of the Harbor Defense Team at Norfolk, Va., and officer in charge of the Navy Rifle Team for inter-services competition. He received an honorable discharge as a lieutenant commander in 1971.
After his Navy career, Jim worked for 20 years with the Aetna Life and Casualty Company as a Senior Claim Representative in the central Maine and coastal area. He was a 25-year member of the Waterville Lions Club, the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a charter member of the Winslow Baptist Church and Emmanuel Baptist Temple of Oakland, serving in several leadership positions. He helped Cross Current International Ministries spread the gospel by shipping 25,000 books "Your Quest For God" to Africa and South America. He had also been a youth Leader with Word of Life Bible Clubs at Getchell Street Baptist Church in the 60s. He had also been a member of The Gideons International. He was a faithful member of Blessed Hope Church of Waterville.
In 1996 he served as finance chairman and building chairman of the Winslow Public Library, where the Winslow Roller Rink was reconstructed into a new library. He served as a school board member of School Union 52 representing Vassalboro, the Maine School Management Association and Governor’s Advisory Council for Federal Funding to Public Education. He was an avid deer
hunter, model train builder, and football fan of the Winslow Black Raiders and New England Patriots, attending training camps at Bryant College, Rhode Island for 25 years.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Colleen Marie (Sullivan) Bowdoin in 1959; his sister, Irmena (Bowdoin) Conway; and brother Warren Bowdoin.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lorraine Grace (Libby) Bowdoin of Winslow; his daughter, Colleen Marie Bowdoin Spencer of Smithfield; and son, James Edward Bowdoin of Winslow. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Sarah and Lisa Spencer; a great-granddaughter, Seraphim Spencer; several nieces and nephews, including Gary and Steven Conway, and special family members Lisa (Bartlett) Sinde and Jeffrey Bridges.
Visiting hours will be held today at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park Street, Waterville, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.. A Christian service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Blessed Hope Church, 10 Pleasant St., Waterville, with Dr. Timothy N. Setzer, Pastor, officiating. A military burial will be held at Hope cemetery in Kennebunk later this spring. Grace H. Grace
YORK HARBOR - Grace H. Grace of York Harbor died Feb. 22, 2004, at her home.

Mary Warner Hoffman
YORK HARBOR - Mary Warner Hoffman, 93, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, surrounded by her family and close friends at the Harbor Home residence in York Harbor.
She was born Aug. 27, 1910, in Elmira, N.Y., the daughter of William Clute Warner and Myrtle Gleckler Warner. During World War II, her father was business manager and officer of the Eclipse Machine Co.of Elmira Heights, a manufacturer of war materials and other peacetime products. Her grandfather was Augustus J. Warner, the founder of Warner Business School, located on West Gray Street in the late 1800s.
Mary graduated from Elmira Free Academy and Wheelock College in Boston with a degree in elementary education. She taught elementary grades at Parley Coburn School in Elmira and became a very popular teacher among students and fellow instructors. Mary was very active in the Elmira Junior League and assisted with or chaired its many fund-raising events. She enjoyed being socially involved with benevolent causes and gained many friends throughout the Elmira area.
On Aug. 5, 1937, Mary married William Edward Hoffman, of Elmira, at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. Her husband was a son of Harry N. Hoffman and Anna Maria Wray Hoffman, of Elmira. Her father-in-law was mayor of Elmira during World War I and was president of Hoffman Nurseries, a large and well-known horticultural business in the Chemung Valley.
Her husband was an outstanding high-school athlete in football and baseball, and in his later 20s and 30s became a well-known amateur golfer with low-score records at the Elmira Country Club. A Colgate University graduate, he sold insurance and was employed by Eclipse Machine Co. and later by the American LaFrance Co.
Mary and William had three children, William, Margaret and George, all surviving.
Mary was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Elmira and frequently attended the First Presbyterian Church with her husband. Following the death of her husband on Sept. 29, 1955, Mary eventually moved to Peterborough, N.H., where she established the landmark Willowbrook Antiques at her residence on the well-traveled main street. There she thrived as she became a respected specialist in early-Colonial antiques. She also pursued her love for art and, through the Sharon Arts Center, created many still-life paintings cherished by friends and relatives. Her love for designing small-garden landscapes and unique flower arrangements gave her special recognition as an active member of the Peterborough Garden Club.
The unfortunate theft of her special brass collection in 1989 caused Mary to close her business and move to Franklin, N.H.,where she lived near her son and his wife in comfortable retirement. In time her longing for the sea became her guide and she moved to Portsmouth, N.H., for several years and then to the village of York Harbor, where she enjoyed weekly travels along the coast with her son and daughter living nearby in Kittery Point.
Mary always welcomed the frequent visits of her sons and daughter. She was a thoughtful and warm mother and expressed a special caring for friends and relatives that never wavered during her long and giving life. She will be dearly missed by her family and the many she touched.
Mary Warner Hoffman is survived by her brother, William C. Warner Jr. of Elmira; a cousin, Elizabeth Gleckler Stone and her husband Fred, of Elmira; children William Warner Hoffman and his wife Linda of Yarmouth, Margaret Anne Hoffman Brodie and her husband John G. of Kittery Point, and George Edward Hoffman of Kittery Point; four grandchildren, John Mitchell Brodie II and his wife Katherine of Chevy Chase, Md., Robert Hamilton Brodie and his wife Laura of Crested Butte, Colo., William Stimson Hoffman and his wife Christina of Newton, N.H., Sarah Hoffman Anderson and her husband Erik of Andover, N.H.; and three great-grandchildren, John Mitchell Brodie III, Kristen Macpherson Brodie and Ruth Lane Anderson.
A memorial event will be held Monday, March 1, 2004, at 1:15 p.m. at the Harbor Home Residence in York Harbor. In the spring a second memorial service will be held at graveside, Warner Plot, at the Woodlawn cemetery in Elmira.
Liliana Howe
YORK – Liliana Howe of 101 York St., died on the morning of Thursday, March 18, 2004, at York Hospital.
She was born in Udine, Italy, where she met her husband of 36 years, the late Harry B. Howe. Liliana accompanied Harry in many overseas assignments, including raising their family in Turkey, Germany and Italy.
The family settled in York in 1980. Liliana enjoyed working at the Cliff House from 1982 to 1992.
Liliana is survived by one sister, Renata Degano of Udine, Italy; three children: Gianna Schermer and Steven Howe, both of York, and Richard Howe of Gaithersburg, Md., and five wonderful grandchildren.
A funeral was held on Tuesday, March 23, in St. Christopher Church. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.
Betty Jean Shangraw
KENNEBUNK - Betty Jean Shangraw, age 73, a resident of Woodside Drive, Kennebunk, died at her home on Wednesday, March 17, 2004, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mrs. Shangraw was born Jan. 22, 1931, in Beech Creek, Pa., a daughter of Glen and Verna (Yearick) Moore Sr. She graduated from Lock Haven High School and furthered her studies in writing composition and the art of painting. She married Jack Lewis Shangraw July 14, 1951. Betty Jean enjoyed writing poetry, painting in water color and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Blanchard, Pa., and attended the Messiah Christian Church of Wells.
Mrs. Shangraw is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jack L. Shangraw of Kennebunk. They raised two sons, Forrest E. of South Ryegate, Vt., and Dennis S. of Nelson, N.H., who passed away in 1993, and a daughter, Pamela S. Murdough of York.
She is also survived by a sister, Marjorie Bechdel of Mt. Royal, N.J., a brother, Paul Moore of Houston, Texas, and eight grandchildren whom she loved and adored.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Brenda K. in 1959, and her brother Glen Moore Jr. in 1998.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., March 27, at the Messiah Christian Church, Route 1, Wells with the Pastors Dan Moore and Glen Barton as officiates.
Interment will be at Village cemetery in Nelson, N.H.

Alice E. MacDonald
MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, Mass. - Alice E. (Patch) MacDonald, wife of the late Alexander MacDonald died April 2, 2004, in the Ledgewood Nursing and Rehab Facility at the age of 98. She was born in York, daughter of the late John H. and Patience (Tobey) Patch. Mrs. MacDonald was a graduate of York High School and Maine State Teachers College in Gorham. She taught school in York, Lexington and Wellesley, Mass.
Mrs. MacDonald is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bruce and Marcia MacDonald of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.; William A. and Eleanor MacDonald of Wolfeboro, N.H.; Robert H. MacDonald of Manchester-by-the-Sea; seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Carol MacDonald. Seth H. Norwood
CAPE NEDDICK - Seth H. Norwood, 62, of 1521 US Route 1, formerly of Portland died unexpectedly Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.
He was born in Augusta, the son of Washington J. and Jennie (Stevens) Norwood. He was raised on Peaks Island and was a graduate of Portland High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966.
Seth worked in the production department at Nissen Bakery in Portland for many years, retiring in 1998. He also was a carpenter in the greater Portland area and had worked as a carpenter and driver at the Portland Diocese office. After retiring he worked at the Country View Motel in Cape Neddick since 1998.
He enjoyed snowmobiling, especially in the Monson and Quebec areas where he would go with friends every year. He also enjoyed building and woodworking.
He was predeceased by nine siblings, Gerald, Douglas, Forest, James Jr., Washington and Thelma Norwood, Nida Nazworth, Virginia Kennedy and Ivy Woodbury.
Survivors include his companion of 11 years, Margaret "Peg" Bowden, of Cape Neddick; a son, Michael Tuttle, and a grandson, Anthony Tuttle of Hobe Sound, Fla.; two sisters, Waneta Morrill of Portland and Jane Keller of So. Portland.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road. Interment services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday in the chapel at the New Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta. Edna M. Shultis
YORK - Edna M. Shultis, 80, of 3 Ruch Lane, died Monday, March 29, 2004, at York Hospital, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Albany, N.Y., Dec. 12, 1923, the daughter of Wilbur and Emma (Windelspecht) Lints. She was a graduate of Roessleville High School in Colonie, N.Y., and attended the Albany Business School.
Mrs. Shultis moved to York in 1972. Before living in York she had resided in Falmouth, Vestal, Amsterdam and Niskayuna, N.Y. When she lived in Niskayuna, she was a volunteer for disabled children.
Edna was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York. She was an avid duplicate bridge player and had become a life master, bronze life master and was within a few points of obtaining her silver life master. She played duplicate bridge in Kennebunk, Ogunquit and Kittery for many years and had entered many duplicate bridge tournaments in the Northeast.
She also enjoyed the many hours spent in her perennial flower gardens and the time she spent with her family.
She was predeceased by a sister, Vera Millington.
Survivors include her loving husband, John H. Shultis Jr. of York; two daughters, Diane McAlpin and her husband, Gordon of Stratham, N.H., and Debra Richard and her husband, Michael of Raymond; one brother, Wilbur Lints of Erie, Pa.; four grandchildren, Tracy Connors, Aaron Richard, Nicole Hitchcock and Joanne Halbert; and seven great-grandchildren.
