Mr. Eugene A. Leino
HARRISON - Eugene A. Leino, 75, a lifelong resident of Harrison, died at peace at his home September 10 with his dedicated wife by his side following a long struggle of failing health as the result of a tractor accident in 1995.
He was born in Harrison on May 23,1929, the son of John and Hilda Kangas Leino. He attended local schools and went on to proudly serve his country during the Korean Conflict. He carried many memories from this time, keeping a special friendship with Melvin Wallace who served with him. On October 31, 1953 he married Avis Pulkkinen and they made their home and raised their family just up the hill in Harrison from where he was raised.
He made his living by doing what he loved, working in the woods in the winter and building houses when the weather allowed. He also worked nights throughout the times when work and money were hard to come by. But everyday he was a farmer. He was always farming his land or his many friends around town until his injury. He enjoyed fishing,
hunting, taking Sunday drives and spending time with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Avis of Harrison; five children, Donald Leino and his wife, the former Joan Rowe of Jackson, Ione Dow and her husband Walter of Norway, Paul Leino and his partner Paula Packard of Waterford and Norway, Gail Bennett and her husband Bob of North Norway, and Paula Leino and her husband Dave Leino of Harrison; four grandchildren, Shane Leino and his wife Tammy, Anita Leino and her companion Ian McFadden, "JR" Foster and Cole Bennett; four great-grandchildren, Harley Sue, Jordan, Jefferey and Samantha; his brothers and sisters, Lempi Yates Heath, Bruno Leino and his wife Ruth, Henry Leino and his wife Miriam, Lila Butterfield and her husband Leslie, Arthur Leino, Harold Leino and his wife Helen, Ella Makey and her husband John, Martha Leino and Walter Leino, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a newborn infant; a half sister Helmi; two half brothers, Arne and Matti and a brother, Laurie.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice and Auburn Kidney Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main Street, Norway with Interment following in the Harrison Lutheran Cemetery. Family and friends may called at the funeral home Monday evening 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorial gifts in his memory to Auburn Kidney Center, 1100 Minot Ave, Auburn, ME or Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice, South High Street, Bridgton, ME.
Mr. Alvin Brown
YORK - Alvin Brown 87, of 10 Brixham Road, York, died peacefully in his sleep at home December 30.
He was born in South Royalton, VT, the son of Rachel Cutts Brown, formerly of Kittery Point and Carle L. Brown of Norway.
Most of his life was spent in the Norway, South Paris, and Waterford area before his retirement to York in 1974.
He worked as a foreman for the Wilner wood mill in South Paris before purchasing a farm in Waterford. He was a successful dairy farmer with a love of animals and a well-known sense of humor. He served on the ASC Board and the Farmer's Home Board for Oxford County.
For many years, he drove a school bus in Waterford which allowed him to get to know the young people in town.
In York he enjoyed the chats with friends on the phone, and watching and feeding the birds outside his house on the deck. He was a good neighbor and loved to share his vegetables with everyone. He was proud of his accomplishments, and loved being referred to as "Farmer Brown." He loved his church, First Parish in York, and was active there for many years.
He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Millett Brown, earlier this year. He was the last of five siblings, all of whom predeceased him including Carle L. Brown, Jr. of York, Alice Howe of Waterford, Viola Rypka of Eastlake, OH, and his youngest sister, Marion Dow of South Paris.
He is survived by his much loved daughter, Carolyn Emmons and her husband Lennie of Hampton, NH; his son, Alvin L. Brown and his wife Jackie of York; his grandchildren, Heidi Emmons of Hampton, NH, Carle L. Brown III and wife Maura of Portsmouth, NH, Lyle Brown of Shanghai, China, and Joshua Brown and wife Kristin of York; three great-grandchildren, Zoe Emmons, and Chance and Jada Brown.
Memorial services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 4 at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Hospice of York, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.
Mr. John R. Gaugler, Jr.
SOUTH PARIS - John R. Gaugler, Jr., 83, of South Paris, died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at the Maine Veterans' Home. He was born in Steelton, PA on July 3, 1921, the son of John R. and Rose Bellows Gaugler, Sr. He graduated from high school in Lafayette, LA. He attended college at Southeastern University in Hammond, LA before leaving in 1941 to join the U. S. Army. He served from 1941 to 1946 in the Second Signal Corps. He married Gertrude Calor Beal in Miami Beach, FL on May 2, 1944.
He worked for 25 years at Ekco Tibbets in Locke Mills. He had served as Chaplain for the Foster-Carroll American Legion in South Paris and was an active member of the Floyd Harlow V. F. W. in South Paris and the Jonesport Masonic Lodge. He was an original member of the Advisory Committee for the Western Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris.
Mr. Gaugler is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gertrude of South Paris; three daughters, Linda Record and her husband Richard of South Paris, Anita Hebert of South Paris and Betty Deegan and her husband Henry of Cape Elizabeth; a son, Kurtz Gaugler and his wife Julita of Titusville, FL; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; a stepmother; a great-granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
Family and friends attended visitation on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris. Foster Carroll American Legion and Floyd Harlow V. F. W. conducted evening Memorial services at 7:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Riverside Annex Cemetery

Miss Eunice D. Salls
SALEM, NJ - Eunice D. Salls, 90, of Salem, NJ, died in New Jersey April 27, 2005.
She was born in Locke Mills on January 9, 1915, the fourth of six daughters born to George and Mable Salls. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Woodstock High School class of 1932 as salutatorian. She put herself through Providence Bible Institute, had worked in New Hampshire, held Bible clubs in the Kentucky Mountains, and in Zanesville, OH.
At the request of a church which supported her in New Jersey, she moved there to help them. While there, Dot Butler was very good to her, furnishing a home and helping in many other ways. She was like a sister to her. Miss Salls' family much appreciated all she did, since they could not be there for her. She was ill for many years, and Dot was there for whatever she needed.
They rejoice that she is now free from her weak body and is with the Lord.
Miss Salls is survived by three sisters, Hazel (Salls) Ford of Mechanic Falls, Avis (Salls) Ellingwood of South Paris and Rita Salls, a retired missionary, of Florida as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Gladys Ellingwood and Maude Newell and a nephew.
Funeral services were held at the Andrews Funeral Home, 64 Andrews Road, South Woodstock on Monday, May 2 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Beliasov officiating. Burial was in the Wayside Cemetery, West Paris.
Robert E. Heikkinen
NORWAY - Robert E. Heikkinen, 68, of Norway died at his home on Wednesday, September 14.
He was born in Paris on March 7, 1937, the son of Eaino and Reda Nichols Heikkinen. He graduated from Norway High School in 1955. He had been employed at Wilner Wood Products and Sears and Roebuck as a delivery truck driver. He enjoyed stock car racing,
hunting and fishing.
Mr. Heikkinen is survived by his daughter, Lori Heikkinen; a granddaughter, Peggy and a great-granddaughter, Lena Anne. He was predeceased by a brother, Bill Heikkinen. There will be no services at this time.
Arrangements are under the direction of Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.
Mr. H. Justin 'Duffy' Doane, Jr.
MECHANIC FALLS - H. Justin "Duffy" Doane, Jr., 80, retired Mechanic Falls Fire Chief, of Mechanic Falls died Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at Central Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Lewiston on November 21, 1925, the son of Henry J. Doane, Sr. and Blanche Campbell Doane. He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School and married Marie J. Allen in 1947.
Mr. Doane had his own business, Doane Photo, and worked his entire life in Lewiston at Bauer Hardware and Hall & Knight as a shipping/receiving warehouse foreman, but his true calling was being a fireman. It was in his heart and his blood. He was a third generation firefighter. He joined the Mechanic Falls Fire Department in 1947 at the age of 22 and in only two years was promoted to Lieutenant. He became fire chief in 1964 and held that position until 1969. He remained with the department in a variety of positions until the time of his death. He was a 58-year member of the department.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Mechanic Falls, Tyrian Lodge #73 AF & AM, Dwinal Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, St. Andrews RAC #51, the Firemen's Association and a lifetime member of the Maine State Federation of Firefighters. He participated in the town's 75th Anniversary Committee and was a member of the civil defense. Not many people had a fallout shelter in their basement or a fire alarm panel mounted in the front room of their house. He loved fishing, all types, whether it was brook, lake or deep sea.
Mr. Doane is survived by his children, Linda and Norman Boulgier of Randolph, Alan of Auburn, Brian and Ann Doane of Litchfield, Mavis and David Smith of Bedford, MA and Colleen and Richard Fitts of South Paris; eight grandchildren, Amanda Boulgier, Aletha and Arlie Thompson, Nathan and Jessica Doane, Laura and Megan Doane, and Devin, Dusty and Daisie Smith; four great-grandchildren, Marie J. Thompson, Dominick Thompson, Azure Doane and Aurora Doane. He was predeceased by his wife in 1998.
Funeral services with full fireman's honors were held on Saturday, December 10 at 11 a.m. at Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 26 W. Dwinal St., Mechanic Falls with Interment following at Maple Grove Cemetery
in Mechanic Falls. Family and friends called at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Masonic services were at 7:30 p.m. by Tyrian Lodge #73 AF & AM. Remembrance donations can be made to the Mechanic Falls Fire Department, Rescue Association, 106 Lewiston St., Mechanic Falls, ME 04256.
Mr. Jeffrey Alan Paul
WEST PARIS - Jeffrey Alan Paul, 37, of West Paris died Monday, December 26, 2005. He was born in Lynn, MA on June 1, 1968, the son of Daniel J. Paul and Kathleen (Thompson) Gigas. He married the former Maria Couto on June 20, 1993.
He had worked for many years as a mechanic and most recently was working for Car Quest. He also took great pleasure in riding his Harley
motorcycle.
Mr. Paul is survived by his wife, Maria of West Paris; his special dog "SASHA," an Alabama red nose pit bull; his mother, Kathleen Gigas of West Paris; his father, Daniel Paul of Saugus, MA; a sister, Amy Paul of Norway; an uncle, Kevin Tompson of Tennessee; great-aunt and uncle Virginia and Bob Johnson of Sumner; nieces and nephews, Naomi, Timothy, Kelsey and Courtney, all of Maine; Elizabeth of Texas, Jillian and Katrina of NH, Naysha and Kayleigh of MA; special cousins, James and Sharon Pope of MA and "Uncle" Frank Landers of South Paris.
Family and friends attended a visitation on Friday evening, December 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Oxford Hills Funeral Services, 1037 Main Street, Rte 26, Oxford. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December 31 at 1 p.m. at Saint Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church in Norway. Interment will be held in the spring at the Riverside Annex in South Paris.

Mr. Donald O'Leary, Sr.
MEXICO - Former Representative and State Senator, Donald R. O'Leary, Sr., 82, of Mexico, died Monday, January 23, 2006 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He was a resident of Main Street, Mexico for many years. He was born in Rumford on October 21, 1923, a son of Daniel and Lucille (Swett) O'Leary, Jr., and graduated from Mexico High School Class of 1941.
He served in the U.S. Navy as an
aviation Metalsmith, 3rd C from February 4, 1943 to December 17, 1945 during World War II. He had been employed at Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford for over 34 years until retirement as a Lab Technician in 1982, and had also served as a former Union President.
Mr. O'Leary was a Communicant of St. Theresa Church, member of Napoleon Ouellette Post # 24, American Legion, member Rumford Falls Aerie # 1248, FOE, formerly served as Oxford County Treasurer, formerly served in the House of Representatives for two terms and the Maine State Senate for eight terms, and most recently had served on the Planning Board and as a Selectman for the Town of Mexico.
He has been very active in state and local politics until his death. He was active in the Democratic Party, attending many State Conventions.
He was a compassionate listener who would defend the rights of his constituents and could always be counted on to follow through with his promises.
He was an avid sportsman who loved
hunting and fishing, especially at his camp in Byron.
Mr. O'Leary was instrumental in creating the first Maine State Veterans' Home in South Paris.
He was married in Rumford on December 4, 1943 to the former Marilyn Ruth Brown who survives of Mexico. Other survivors include three daughters, Donna Martin and husband Louis of Auburn, Jayne Witas and husband David of Lewiston and Melissa O'Leary and companion Timothy Bouchard of Auburn; three sons, Thomas and wife Julie of Crestview, FL, Timothy and Donald O'Leary, Jr. of Byron; a brother, John O'Leary of Rumford; two sisters, Eleanor Patrie of Rumford and Mary Lou Doyle and husband Christopher of Dunwoody, GA; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy Hosie and Geraldine Lambert and three brothers, Gordon, Ivus "Ike" and Gerald O'Leary.
There will be no public calling hours but friends are invited to attend the funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 26 at St. Theresa Church, Mexico. Interment will be in the spring at Demeritt Cemetery, West Peru.
