Mrs. Marilyn E. Berry
INDUSTRY - Marilyn E. Berry, 72, of 72 Seavey Road, Industry, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington following a long illness.
She was born in Norway on February 13, 1933, the daughter of Elmo D. and Pauline (Wittemore) McGray.
She was educated in Oxford schools and was employed for many years in the shoe industry until her retirement. Mrs. Berry enjoyed watching cartoons.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Berry of Norway; two sons, Albert C. Smith Jr. "AJ" and his wife Lorraine of South Paris and Donald W. Smith and his wife Nancy J. of Oxford; two brothers, Ernest McGray and his wife Juanita of Oxford and Lawrence McDonald of Lewiston; two sisters, Jean Phelps of Industry and Terry Wakefield and her husband Keith of Oxford; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 18 at 12 p.m. in the funeral home with Reverend Lawrence Hathorne officiating. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Pinette Funeral Home, 87 Bartlett St. Lewiston.
Mrs. Myra Mae Ripley
SOUTH PARIS - Myra Mae Ripley, 88, of South Paris, died April 27, 2005.
She was born in North Windham on June 15, 1916, the daughter of Warren and Annie (Page) Cannell. She was an avid reader and gardener, loved to watch birds and was a jealous Elvis fan. She owned and operated, with her son Ralph, Ripley's Market in Norway for 13 years.
Mrs. Ripley's family was her life and she is survived by one son, Ralph and his wife Bonnie of South Paris; three daughters, Carol Spizuoco and her husband Patsy of Cumberland, Donna Williams of Delaware and Roberta Messenger and her husband Guy of Farmington; one brother, William Cannell of Johnstown, NY; one daughter-in-law, Marge Ripley of Norway; 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; six great-great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Ripley Sr. in 1961; one son, Robert in 2002; one grandson, Michael Ripley; two brothers, Warren and Arthur and one sister, Agnes.
Graveside services will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Falmouth on Monday, May 9 at 2 p.m. Arrangements by Andrews Funeral Home, 64 Andrews Road, South Woodstock.
Mr. Richard Allen Peterman
BELFAST - Richard Allen Peterman, 50, of Belfast passed away at home on Saturday, September 24, 2005, surrounded by his family.
He was born on September 4, 1955 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. Dick grew up in Millville, PA and graduated from Millville Area High School class of 1973 and received an Associates degree in Accounting and Business from the Williamsport Area Community College.
He worked for Ames Department Store for 27 years settling in Belfast 23 years ago where he became a manager.
He was active in the 4-H Club as a youth, and the Boy Scouts,Troop 27 in Belfast and recently joined the Order of the Arrow. Dick enjoyed camping, canoeing, fishing, gardening, cooking and working around his property.
He is survived by his parents, Harvey and Mildred (Mordan) Peterman of Pennsylvania; his wife of 25 years, Debora, of Belfast; two children: Jeffrey and Benjamin; a brother: James Daniel Peterman of Bloomsburg, PA and his wife, Kerri; a sister: Linda Kay Rogers, of Orangeville, PA and husband Richard; nieces and nephews: Sawyer, Shayne, Tracy, Amy, Audrey, Allison, Christopher, and Kelly; and his mother-in-law Joyce Beaudion and her husband Roland.
A memorial service will be held at 1p.m. on Saturday, October 1st at the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave, Belfast with the Reverend David Abbott officiating. Those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to Waldo County Home Health and Hospice, PO Box 407, Belfast, ME 04915.
Mr. Michael R. Cooper
SOUTH PARIS - Michael Robert Cooper, 50, of Ryerson Hill Road died Wednesday, January 25 at Stephens Memorial Hospital. He was born in Aberdine, MD on July 25, 1955, the son of Verlin and Leonie Schilling Cooper.
After graduating from Oxford Hills High School in 1975, he proudly served in the U. S. Army in the Armor Division for three years, one year in Germany. He had been employed at Robinson Manufacturing for 20 years and worked on the family farm. His hobbies were photography,
hunting and driving his four-wheeler through the woods. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and lived life to its fullest.
Mr. Cooper is survived by his mother, Leonie Cooper of South Paris; a sister, Catherine Cooper of South Paris; a brother, Verlin Cooper and his wife Stephanie of West Paris; a sister, Carmen Adler and her husband David of Mt. Tremper, NY; his son, Joseph Rathbun of Hebron; three nieces and two nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Verlin Cooper.
Services were held on Sunday, January 29 at 2 p.m. at the family home, 769 Ryerson Hill Rd., South Paris. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.
Mr. Glen W. Torrey
POLAND - Glen W. Torrey, 91, died Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at Central Maine Medical Center.
He was born September 12, 1915 in Lewiston, the son of Leo G. and Mary Law Torrey. The family settled at the former J.G. Davis farm in the Empire section of Poland in 1922. He attended the Empire School and graduated from Edward Little High School in the class of 1931. He graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in dairy technology in 1936. While at the University of Maine he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho social fraternity and Alpha Zeta scholastic fraternity. On August 24, 1941 he married Jane Waterhouse of Poland. He was employed by HP Hood & Sons for seven years in various milk plants, before leaving to join the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned home to become a partner with his father in the family dairy and poultry operations.
Mr. Torrey was active in many agricultural groups as a 4-H Club leader, Twin County Extension member, Maine Farm Bureau member, and County committeeman for FHA. He also served many years as an associate supervisor and supervisor with the Soil and Water Conservation District. In 1981 he was appointed to the Maine State A.S.C.S. committee where he served for eight years.
He was very involved in numerous community activities. He was a member and trustee of the Minot Corner Methodist Church, member and Past Master of the Excelsior Grange, and Past Master of the Cumberland Lodge of Masons. In the Poland government he served as a Selectman, Assessor, Overseer of the Poor, School Committee member, School District trustee, and numerous times as Town Meeting Moderator. A lifelong Republican, he was elected to the Maine State Legislature in 1974, where he served three consecutive terms. He also served as a Poland Community Club member, trustee of the Community Health Center, treasurer of the Poland Ministerial Fund, director and president of the Pine Grove Cemetery, director of the Poland Spring Preservation Society, president of the Poland Spring Garden Club, member of the Poland Historical Society and member of the Ricker Senior Citizens. He was also a member of Poland's 175th Anniversary Committee, and the 1995 Bicentennial Committee. At the bicentennial festivities he was cited as "Mr. Bicentennial." At Poland's Town Meeting in 2001, he was presented with a plaque honoring him as an Outstanding Citizen.
Mr. Torrey enjoyed 66 years with his beloved wife Jane. She was a devoted helpmate and supporter and contributed greatly to his successful life. He was predeceased by a brother, Gale Torrey. He is survived by his wife Jane; their daughters, Nancy Wright of Clinton, Cynthia Whiting of Windham, Glenna Bridges of Westwood, MA and son, John Torrey of Bradley. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 8 at 10 a.m. at Minot Corner Methodist Church with Interment following at Pine Grove Cemetery
in Poland. Family and friends called at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 26 W. Dwinal St., Mechanic Falls on Friday evening with a public Masonic service conducted by Cumberland Lodge AF & AM. Donations in his memory may be sent to Poland Rescue, 1231 Maine St., Poland, ME 04274.
Mr. Lawrence E. 'Larry' Gurney
EL DORADO, KS - Lawrence E. "Larry" Gurney, 69, of El Dorado, Kansas, died Saturday, October 20, 2001, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
Born December 23, 1931, in Norway, he was the son of George L. and Ida Mae Lapham Gurney.
Mr. Gurney came to the El Dorado area in the early 1950s from Maine. He worked for Kansas Gas Service as a welder in the Pressure Department until retiring in 1989.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Lutheran Church in Augusta, KS and attended Park Avenue Baptist Church in El Dorado. He was a member of United Steel Workers of America, 13417, serving as president from 1982 to 1988. He also served as president of the Local Chapter prior to 1982. A member of the American Legion 81, he belonged to several coffee clubs in El Dorado.
On August 4, 1973, he married Ervertta "Eve" Trollope in El Dorado.
Those he leaves include his wife at the home; two sons, Larry Gurney, Wichita, KS and Todd Plummer, Rose Hill, KS; two daughters, Lynda Queen and Lora Walker, both of Augusta, KS; a sister, Shirley Kimball of Norway; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24, at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Cremation followed the service.

Mrs. Grace T. Archer
SOUTH PARIS - Grace T. Archer of 48 Western Avenue died November 6, 2001 at the age of 83. Mrs. Archer had had Parkinson's disease for several years.
Born Grace A.Thorne in Alma, Michigan, in 1918, she obtained her diploma as a Registered Nurse in Alma.
During WWII she served as a Navy Nurse in the South Pacific, and stateside. She was employed at New Britain General Hospital in Connecticut. After moving to Maine in 1979 she was, for a time, active in the Woodstock Fire Department Auxiliary, and was, for more than fifteen years, a member of Tri-Town Rescue as an LAA, EMT, and dispatcher in the Auxiliary, SAR. She served as Chief for two years.
Mrs. Archer enjoyed Nordic skiing, camping and hiking throughout Maine including Mt. Katahdin, also Newfoundland, the Grand Tetons in Wyoming and the Blue Mountains in Australia. She was a supporter of the West Parish Congregational Church in Bethel.
Mrs. Archer is survived by her husband, Harry W. Archer; a son, Gregory T. Archer; a daughter, Patricia A. Lovejoy and son-in-law, Michael A. Lovejoy and grandson William T. Lovejoy, all of South Paris. Other survivors include a son, Kenneth A. Archer, and daughter-in law Christina R. Archer of Glastonbury, CT; a daughter Margaret A. Herbert, and son-in-law, Harry J. Herbert, and granddaughters, Catherine and Julia Herbert, all of Sydney, Australia; and a brother, Stanley Thorne of Olympia, Washington.
A memorial service is planned for 1:00 p.m. on December 8 at the Andrews Funeral Home in South Woodstock.

Mrs. Lois C. Ellingwood
WEST PARIS - Lois C. Ellingwood, 88, of West Paris, died May 25, 2003 in West Paris.
She was born on September 20, 1914 in North Paris, the daughter of Charles W. and Julia Gauthier Childs. She attended local schools and graduated from West Paris High School in 1933 and married Howard F. Ellingwood on November 29, 1933. Lois was a member of West Paris Alumni, was a Girl Scout leader for many years and was a life member of the
Granite Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and was a former Worthy Matron. Lois was a very gifted pianist and enjoyed playing for family and many friends and was a wonderful cook.
Mrs. Ellingwood is survived by her husband, Howard of West Paris; a daughter, Joan Young and her husband Jim of West Paris; granddaughters, Jan and Rick Bradeen of West Paris, Patricia Poland of Hanover, Karen and Clay Wilson of West Paris, Kathy Hemphill of West Paris and Elizabeth and Lars Paulsen of Oslo, Norway and great-grandchildren Jason and James Bradeen, Joseph Hakala, Ashley and Davey Hemphill, Melissa Howe and Katelyn and Kristina Wilson.
She was predeceased by her parents; a son, Stanley Howard Ellingwood and a brother, Harlan Childs.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, May 30 at 1 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, 64 Andrews Road, South Woodstock. Burial will follow at the Wayside Cemetery, West Paris.

Mr. Glynn A. Witter
SOUTH PARIS - Glynn A. Witter, 79, of South Paris died Thursday, June 12 at the Maine Veterans Home.
He was born in Berlin, NH on January 24, 1924, the son of Andrew Jackson and Harriet Alberta McGee Witter. He attended schools in Berlin. He had been employed by Burlington Homes and later at Keiser Homes. He was a member of the Paris Masonic Lodge 94, American Legion Post 0068 in Locke Mills and the V.F.W. Post 9787 in South Paris. He faithfully served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He married Carolyn J. Daye on April 16, 1948.
He is survived by his wife of South Paris; three sons, Michael and his wife Gail of Bethel, Ronnie and his wife Barbara of Lebanon and Philip and his wife Melissa of Rehoboth, MA; two daughters, Bonnie Carver and her husband Jeffrey of Norway and Audrey Witter of South Paris; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by six brothers and three sisters.
Family and friends attended visitation at Weston Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris on Wednesday evening, June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. with the American Legion service at 7 p.m. Remembrance donations can be made to the Maine Veterans Home, Unit B, 477 High Street, South Paris, ME 04281.
