LAVERTU, Freeman Joseph, 68
ORRINGTON - Freeman J. Lavertu, 68, died Dec. 7, 2001, at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Grand Isle, Nov. 21, 1933, the son of Arthur and Alice (Gorneau) Lavertu. Freeman loved life, laughter, and the outdoors. He worked for many years as a hand sewer and carpenter, and enjoyed making furniture. Surviving are his wife, Sandra (Smith) Lavertu of Orrington; four children, Thomas Lavertu and his wife, Rebecca of Milford, Judy Botelho of Brewer, Diana Sibley and her husband, Ken of Veazie, Michael Lavertu of Brewer; sisters, Elsie Bossie of Ft. Kent, Linda Fernette of North Carolina; brothers, Joseph Lavertu of Dedham, Joel Lavertu of Edinburn, Delmar Lavertu of Howland; grandchildren, Allison Ross of Pittsfield, Dwaine Anastos of Belfast, Jason Botelho of Florida, Jennifer Botelho of Bangor; great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Patrick, Zachary; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, Allen, Fern, and Donald. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Homer Strang officiating. KIMBALL, Priscilla A., 69
DERRY, N.H. - Priscilla Ann Kimball, 69, of Derry, N.H., formerly of Palmyra, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at her home. born in Hampden, Dec. 1, 1932 the daughter of Thomas and Marguerite (Canwell) Lawrence, she was a resident of Maine all her life, until her recent move to New Hampshire. Mrs. Kimball was a graduate of Hampden Academy in Hampden. She was a wonderful wife for 46 years, and a caring mother. She lived many years in Newburgh, Hampden and Lewiston. She was a past advisory board member of Lewiston Assembly 14 International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She was a majority girl of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls and a member of the Eastern Star. She was an avid reader and crafter and had many interests. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur, R. Kimball in 1999. Survivors include her younger brother, Richard Lawrence of Newburgh; five children, Kathy Chase of New Gloucester, Timothy of Northport, Karen Paynter of Salinas, Kan., Terrance of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Wendy Byrd of Derry, N.H.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends. A service was held on Dec. 9 at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.

MILLINOCKET - Gail A. Mackin, 68, died Dec. 11, 2001, at Millinocket, surrounded by her family. She was born Aug. 2, 1933, in Millinocket, the daughter of Laurence and Pauline (Tapley) Whitehouse. Gail enjoyed her weekly card games with her close friends. She is survived by six children, Patricia and Steve Vaznis, Dawn Rudolf, Peter Mackin and Liz McGreevy, Roxanna Mackin, all of Millinocket, Laura Mackin of Norfolk, Va., and David and Sandra Mackin of Hampden; four grandchildren, Faith Vaznis, Meagan and Ashley McGreevy and Michael Paul Rudolf; one sister, Joyce Lamb of Bowdoinham, many nieces, nephews and cousins, her dear friend, Jean Lasky, and many other close friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Clarence; and one son, Michael Mackin. Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Millinocket. SACO - Oramel Sides Thomas Sr., 80, of 11 Charles Road, died Dec. 10, 2001, at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. He was born in Vanceboro, June 5, 1921, the son of Hildbert and Julia Sides Thomas. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Sargent Thomas, three sons and several grandchildren. CYR, William Victor Sr., 73
MILLINOCKET - William Victor Cyr Sr., 73, died Dec. 11, 2001, at Lewiston. He was born in Millinocket, Sept. 20, 1928, the son of John and Silina (Raymond) Cyr. born and raised in Millinocket, he was one of 11 children. He was a U.S. Navy Korean Veteran, a member of Donald V. Henry Post No. 80 American Legion, and a member of B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1521 in Millinocket. Vic worked many years at Great Northern Paper Company retiring in the late 1980's. He enjoyed his music,
hunting, fishing, and his camp at South Twin Lake. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by one daughter, Vicki Anne Webber of Bar Harbor; three sons, William Cyr and friend, Mary Walsh, Rick Cyr Sr. and wife, Lorri, and Dana Cyr Sr. and wife, Sharon, all of Millinocket; six grandchildren, Rick Cyr Jr., Hollie Cyr, Angella Cyr, Christina Boisvert, William Cyr and Erec Cyr; one great-grandchild, Contessa Boisvert; one brother, Raney Cyr; sisters, Eleanor Groleau, Jeanette Petroski, Ida Dempsey, Leona Nagrabski, and Rosi Lucien. He was predeceased by a grandson, Dana Cyr Jr.; a brother, Ben Cyr; and sisters, Anne Gallant, Mary Krampitz, and Sadie Plourde. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at R. L. FRANCES M. (GREEN) CUOZZO
BANGOR - Frances Mary Cuozzo, 90, wife of the late G. Vincent Cuozzo, died April 5, 2002, at a local hospital. She was born in Old Town, Feb. 21, 1912, the daughter of Harry Frederick and Mary Lynn (Hubbard) Green. Frances was affiliated with the Bangor Faculty Wives Club and the Abnaki Girl Scout Council. She had a special love for the Maine Coast and enjoyed cooking, gardening and bird watching. Frances was a most devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Surviving are one daughter, Diane (Cuozzo) Shibles and her husband, Dennis W.; two granddaughters, Mary Lynn Shibles, Myra Louise Shibles, all of Bangor; four special cousins, Helen Clough, Ruth McFarland, John Stewart, all of Bar Harbor, and Arthur Dresser of Holden. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A service, for the family only, will be held Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. NICHOLAS SABLICH BAR HARBOR - Francis Nicholas Sablich, 86, died April 5, 2002, at a Bar Harbor health-care facility. He was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Bar Harbor, the son of Paul and Pauline (Nirich) Sablich. Nick attended St. Edward's Parochial School in Bar Harbor and St. John Baptist High School in Bangor. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Bar Harbor. He loved the sea and his entire adult life was spent being captain of fishing, sightseeing and whale watching boats. Even when away for the winter, he would always ask what was going on at the waterfront. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (Gambino) Sablich; and three cousins, Helen Brown of Georgia, John Nirich of Virginia and Mary Robinson of Maine. Friends are invited to call 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at Jordan-Fernald, Bar Harbor Chapel, 48 Eden St., where the Rosary will be prayed at 2:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday, April 8, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor, with the Rev. Joseph Daniels and the Rev. James Gower presiding. Interment will be at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor. HELENA D. HAMMER
CAMDEN - Helena Dorothy (Gray) Hammer, 84, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, after complications following hip replacement surgery. She was initially hospitalized Jan. 14, but had been in Windward Gardens rehabilitation care center for part of the recovery period. "Helen" Hammer had been a resident of Cobb Rd. in Camden for 46 years, and was well known in the community and loved by current and former neighbors. born at Somerville, Mass., Feb. 8, 1918, she was the daughter of Stanley Gray and Katherine (Giblin) Gray, of Cape Rosier (Brooksville), and always called "The Cape" home. She graduated from Brooksville High School as salutatorian in 1935. She attended the University of Maine at Orono and Boston University, in preparation for the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Boston, where she graduated in 1939. She was a registered nurse until giving up her license in 1983. In addition to private duty and institutional nursing, she worked with her husband, John N. "Jack" Hammer (Dec. 1986), whom she met during World War II in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was stationed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They operated auto dealerships in Michigan and Augusta, and a bakery delivery business in the Hancock County area, before moving to Camden in 1952. "She was a very caring, giving person, whose sense of humor and spirit endeared her to many outside her small family and longtime friends and neighbors," according to her son, John of Westbrook and Camden. "She had great relationships with the people she came in contact with on just about a daily basis, and so many of them called to ask where she was, how was she doing, and to say how much they missed her." Mrs. Hammer had a lifelong love of animals and great concern over their care and treatment, and she loved plants and gardening. She enjoyed her "half Irish" ancestry and always regretted never traveling to the "Old Country" to visit relatives. She had been a member of the John Street United Methodist Church in Camden. She is survived by her son, John E. Hammer and wife, Cheryl of Westbrook; granddaughter, Tracey Hammer of Augusta; and great-granddaughter, Briannah Dill. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the Robert E. Laite Funeral Home, 9 Mountain St., Camden. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the John St. Methodist Church in Camden, with the Rev. Juni Shepardson officiating. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Evergreen cemetery in Cape Rosier. Memorial donations can be made to the Helena D. BETTINA MARIE LAING
WESTFIELD - Bettina M. Laing, 73, wife of the late Emerson R. Laing, died April 5, 2002, at a Mars Hill health-care facility. She was born in Mars Hill, July 19, 1928, the only daughter of the late Clifford Charles and Nina Pearl (Smith) Long. Betty attended Mars Hill schools, graduating from Aroostook Central Institute in 1946. She worked several years at the Westfield Post Office with her husband, Emerson, who was the postmaster. She was a member of the Mars Hill United Methodist Church and Lunar Chapter, OES. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Emerson R. Laing in 1986; and her brother, Clifford H. Long in 2000. She will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law, Gladys Long; special cousins, Helen Clark and Dorothy Dalbeck and her family; and dear friends, Bill and Anita Davis. Betty loved animals and will be truly missed by her cat, Cami. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at the Duncan Funeral Home, Mars Hill, with the Rev. TRENETTA E. MALLORY
BUXTON - Trenetta E. Mallory, 95, of the Groveville section of Buxton, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Stuart, Fla.
She was born in Hampden, Oct. 19, 1906, the daughter of Frederick and Essie Eisner Emery.
She was a graduate of Hampden Academy in 1924. After several years as a secretary for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and Bangor Hydro-Electric Company, she enrolled in St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing and was graduated in 1932.
Following eight years of private duty nursing in New York City, she and her husband, Spurgeon B. Mallory, moved to Maine with their family.
She then did hospital and private duty nursing at Buxton-Hollis Hospital and Webber Hospital in Biddeford as well as three years of private duty nursing in Sarasota, Fla.
In 1961 until her retirement in 1971, she worked as a secretary for the American Red Cross at its Portland Chapter and also assisted as a volunteer motor corps driver.
Mrs. Mallory particularly enjoyed gardening and many friends and members of her extended family were the fortunate recipients of her flowers and vegetables.
Her brother, the late Charlie Emery, long time pro at Penobscot Valley Country Club, introduced her to golf which she enjoyed playing over the years.
Reading was one of her greatest pleasures, and she was particularly fond of biographies.
Her interest in the Brownings, Robert and Elizabeth, led to her many years of membership in the Browning Institute and also to visits to the site of the Browning home, Casa Guidi, in Florence, Italy, as well as other areas pertinent to their life in London.
The Mallorys were fortunate in having many trips abroad, to the British Isles and Europe, as well as throughout the United States, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii.
It was while they were vacationing in Florence, Italy, in 1973, that Mr. Mallory died as the result of an accident on the Santa Trinita Bridge.
In later trips, Mrs. Mallory was accompanied by her sister, Faustina Chamberlain, and her niece, Joyce Chamberlain Egge.
Their interest in genealogy took them to Romsey, Hants, England, the home of their Emery ancestors, John and Anthony Emery emigrated from there in 1635 and settled in Berwick, Maine.
They also visited the farm home of the Eisenhauers in Eiterbach, Germany.
These ancestors emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the 1700's, and settled in Chester Basin where Mrs. Mallory's mother grew up.
Mrs. Mallory was a life member of Star in the East Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and Dorothea Dix Rebekah Lodge, both of Hampden, and the Hampden Historical Society, as well as a member of the Buxton Historical Society.
Mrs. Mallory was also a life member of the Anti-Vivisection Society, Pennsylvania, and through her efforts, 50 secondary schools in Maine received monthly publications of the society.
She was a communicant of St. Luke's in Portland for many years.
Mrs. Mallory is survived by her son, Ronald Mallory of Conway, N.H., and her son, Jay Mallory, and wife, Jane of Stuart, Fla.; four granddaughters, Krista Mallory-MacDonald of Bangor, Ingrid Mallory of Wiscasset, Jessica and Jaclyn Mallory of Stuart, and a grandson, Jay Mallory of Stuart, as well as several great-grandsons, Walker-James Mallory of Wiscasset, Kyle, Tyler, and Ryan Mallory-MacDonald of Bangor.
She is also survived by a former daughter-in-law and dear friend, Charlene Cote and her sons, Jeffrey and Jason Poulin. Mrs. Mallory leaves a sister, Faustina Chamberlain, and her husband, Melvin of West Baldwin; also a brother, Wilbur Emery of Hampden, and Winter Springs, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Thelma Emery of Bangor; four nieces, Virginia Mattson of Carmel, Janet Bouchard of South Portland, Hope Mallory of New Brunswick, Canada, and Joyce Egge of Danbury, N.H.; five nephews, John Mallory of New Brunswick, Mark Chamberlain of Placerville, Calif., Bruce Chamberlain of Monroe, Fred and Robert Emery of Hampden.
Mrs. Mallory was predeceased by her brothers, Alvin and Charles Emery, and her sister, Mavis Emery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in Mrs. Mallory's memory, to the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals, P.O. Box 10, South Windham, Maine, 04082.
A memorial service will be held at the York Funeral Chapel, Maple Street, Cornish, 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002. Interment of ashes at Highlands Cemetery, in Groveville, later that day.

Beatrice enjoyed knitting and reading.
