Joseph R. Sciaraffa
RUMFORD -- Graveside services for Joseph R. Sciaraffa of Rumford were conducted on July 7, 2011 at St. John Cemetery, with Fr. James Martel officiating.
Military Honors were given by the Maine Military Funeral Honors program from Augusta.
A reception followed at the Home of Anita Richardson in Rumford.
Arrangements were under the care of the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.
Gladys White Sampson
FARMINGTON -- Gladys White Sampson, 90, of Vienna, and Vero Beach, FL, died on Oct. 10, 2011 at Franklin Memorial Hospital.
Gladys was born in North Jay on June 29, 1921, the daughter of Carl B. and Lena (Merrill) Wright. She attended Macomber Hill School in North Jay and graduated from Jay High School.
She worked for the Wilton Woolen Mill and retired from Bass Shoe after 25-years.
Gladys married Leon E. White on June 30, 1946. They made their home in Wilton and raised one son, George C. White.
Leon passed away in December of 1990.
Gladys was blessed to find love again and married Colin Sampson on March 6, 1992. They spent summers at their camp on Flying Pond in Vienna where she enjoyed gardening and watching the loons on the lake. They spent winters in Florida.
She was a member of Wilton United Methodist Church, Wilton Senior Citizens and for several years, she trained and served as an on-call volunteer for the Wilton Ambulance Service. She was a caring, down-to-earth woman who was always willing to help others.
She spent hours raising flower, vegetable and berry gardens. She enjoyed crocheting, crafts, cooking and sharing what she made.
She is survived by her husband, Colin; stepson, Dennis Sampson of Florida; grandsons, Michael White and wife, Angela of Washington, Steven White and wife, Tara of Idaho; great-grandchildren, Scarlett, Brittany, Tayler, Matthew and Emma; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and William Bryant; brother, Myron Wright; nieces, Beverly
Coolidge, Ann Bryant, Nicky Tracy, Alice Mullen; and nephew, Everett Wright.
Gladys was predeceased by her parents; husband, Leon; son, George; and brother, Everett Wright.
Flora L. Roy
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VT -- Flora L. Roy, 88, died on Oct. 16, 2011 at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction, VT.
She was born on Aug. 5, 1923 in Beecher Falls, VT, a daughter of Eloi Andre and Melanie (Johnson) Roy. After graduating from Stephens High School in Rumford where she spent her career working for the Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, CT.
She retiring, she has resided in White River Junction to be nearer to her sister, Estelle St. Jacques.
In addition to her sister, Estelle of White River Junction, she leaves a brother, Leonard A. Roy of Rumford; three nephews, three nieces, a grandnephew, four grandnieces and two great-grandnephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, J. Edward Roy, late of Lady Lake, FL.
Alton "Buster" Wing
AUBURN -- Alton "Buster" Wing, 83, of Dixfield, died on Oct. 29, 2011 at the Hospice House.
He was born March 16, 1928, in Mexico, the son of Archie and Rose (Richards) Wing. He attended local schools and received an honorary degree from Dirigo High School.
He served in the Seabees and Army during WWII and on May 1, 1948, married Jessie Steward. He was employed at Oxford Paper Co. and then later worked as a custodian at Dirigo and as a bus driver/custodian at SAD 21 Region 9 Vocational Technical School.
He was a member of King Hiram Masonic Lodge #57, the Rumford Snowshoe Club, American Legion Post #100 of Dixfield and the Poodunck Snowmobile Club. His favorite hobby was attending Blistered Fingers Blue Grass Festivals where he enjoyed the music, dancing and comraderie. He loved doing woodworking in his free time and was noted for making his famous tables that "he sold too cheap."
He is survived by his wife, Jessie of Dixfield; daughters, Barbara Moody and her husband, Reggie of Madison, Carol Colby and her husband, Paul of Auburn, and Penny Lane and her husband, David of Gettysburg, PA; brothers, George Wing and Archie Wing, Jr. and his wife, Charlene, all of Peru, and Alfred Wing of Canton; sister, Florence Porter and her husband, Frank of Dixfield; eight grandchildren, Melissa and Shawn Newcomb, Matthew and Misty Colby, Carrie and Jesse Gueydan and Nathan and Brianna Lane; and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Lane and Lili Gueydan.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Wiles Remembrance Center, 42 Weld St., Dixfield from 5-7 p.m. Friday where public Masonic services will be held at 6:30 PM, followed by the Dixfield American Legion service.
Public memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Center, with Rhonda Wiles-Rosell as celebrant. A reception will follow at the Center. All are welcome. Public committal services, with full military honors, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the South Side Cemetery, Skowhegan. Remembrance gifts may be given to the charity of one's choice.
Frederick Allen Moore
BEDFORD, NH — Frederick Allen Moore, formerly of Rumford and Wayne, died on Oct. 22, 2011.
He was born July 11, 1918, the son of Clifford and Pearl Yeo Moore in Harmony, Prince Edward Island, Canada
. He attended schools in both PEI and Rumford.
Fred served in the U.S. Navy during WW II aboard the USS Garrard (APA 84), a troop transport ship. He was aboard the ship in Tokyo Bay when the surrender papers were signed ending the war. Proud of his service, he maintained a membership in the Rumford VFW.
After the war, he worked for 40 years as an operator on the super-calendars at the Rumford paper mill for both the Oxford and Boise Cascade paper companies.
In 1946, he married Gwen Parker. They lived in Rumford until Fred retired in 1980, at which time they moved to Wayne. They recently moved into an assisted living facility in Bedford, NH.
Fred infected his sons and sons-in-law with his love of deer
hunting
, instigating the annual foray to Hunter's Haven in both Newry and Aroostook County.
Fred is survived by his loving wife; his son, Terry Moore of Rumford; his daughters, Karen Arsenault of Manchester, NH, Judy White of Essex, VT, Brenda Wurrey of Londonderry, NH, and their spouses; Ray Arsenault, Frank White and Fred Wurrey; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Dick, and daughter-in-law, Pauline Moore.
Fred, you will be missed by all who love you.
Wallace A. Cutting, Jr.
SCARBOROUGH -– Wallace A. Cutting, Jr., 85, of Gray and formerly of Andover and Portsmouth, NH, died on August 16, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
He was born in Andover on June 1, 1926, the son of Wallace and Marian (Jones) Cutting Sr. He had attended schools in Andover and Portsmouth, NH.
Wallace served his country as a Sgt with the U.S. Army Air Force from 1946 to 1949.
He had a private pilot’s license and loved to fly small aircraft. He enjoyed working on mechanical equipment and fabricating special equipment.
He was married to his wife of 67 years, Eleanor C. Coffey Cutting, who survives of Gray.
Other survivors include sons, Russell Cutting and wife, Sandra of Shapleigh, Wayne Cutting and wife, Carla of York, and Larry and wife, Pam of Lyman; a sister, Phyllis Crosby and husband, Robert of New Mexico; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Andover, with Rev. Jane Rich officiating.
George M. Tripp
NEW GLOUCESTER/ELLINGTON, CT -- George M. Tripp, 78, of Ellington, beloved husband of Mary “Pat” (Doherty) Tripp, passed away at Rockville General Hospital, CT on May 17, 2011.
He was born February 10, 1933 in New Gloucester, son of the late Percy and Dolly (Tims) Tripp.
George was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He went to trade school in Boston, enjoyed his western movies, and was an avid fan of the UConn men's and women's basketball. He worked at Chandler-Evans/Goodrich in West Hartford, CT for 42 years before retiring.
Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Daniel Tripp Sr. and his wife, Terri of Deerfield, NH, Kelly Ann Avery and her husband, Robert of Stafford, CT, Shawn Tripp and his wife, Linda of Ellington, CT and Karen Coté of Ellington; a brother, Percy Tripp and his wife Ann of Westbrook; a sister, Sally Turbide of Mexico; nine grandchildren, Shannon, Danny Jr., Melissa, Justin, Aislynn, Amy, Robin, Gary, Jr. and Adrianna; five great-grandchildren, Gabriell, Gage, Hunter, Kelly and Amber; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Daisy Tripp, Keziah McIntyre and Lewis Tims; and his grandson, Travis Coté.
Edith S. Robichaud
MEXICO -- Edith S. Robichaud, 85, longtime resident of Mexico, died on December 29, 2010 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Becky Robichaud, following a brief illness.
She was born in Dexter on November 15, 1925, a daughter of Jesse and Vonnie (Awalt) Smith. Edith moved to Mexico at the age of seven and was educated in local schools. She was a graduate of Mexico High School and was class Valedictorian.
She married Ernest Robichaud on June 19, 1947. Together they celebrated 63 years of marriage. After her marriage, she was secretary to the principal at Stephens High School for many years.
She later was employed with her son and daughter-in-law at Rita’s Laundry in Rumford, where she made many friends.
Edith was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior. She was a member of Webb River Valley ATV Club and enjoyed the monthly luncheon meetings.
Edith always loved attending luncheons and gatherings with family and friends. She especially loved her camp at Garland Pond when her kids were young and in her retirement years she enjoyed her camp at Brettun’s Pond.
Surviving are her husband, Ernest Robichaud of Carthage; three sons, David P. Robichaud and wife, Carol of Sebring, FL, John A. Robichaud and wife. Della of Rumford, and Peter A. Robichaud and wife, Becky of Carthage; grandchildren, Kevin Robichaud and wife, Wendy, Craig Robichaud and wife, Lisa, Dwinal Randall, Joshua Hayes and Megan Robichaud: great-grandchildren, Kolby Robichaud, Kelcey
Robichaud, Kirsten Robichaud, Brittany Robichaud and Danielle Robichaud; a special nephew, James Hagen and wife, Kathy, and their daughter, Kelly and her husband, Carl, and their daughter, Isabel; and many nieces and nephews who she loved very much.
She was predeceased by her parents; two sons, Paul A. Robichaud in 1972, and Richard L. Robichaud in 1994; four sisters, Leora French Hagen, Alma Richards, Martha Reynolds Awalt and Cybil Smith; and two brothers, Alton Smith and Floyd Smith.
Barbara E. Gordon
FARMINGTON –- Barbara E. Gordon, 78, of Fairbanks, formerly of Fayette, passed peacefully in the early morning hours of Nov. 8, 2011, at Farmington Memorial Hospital, with family at her side.
She was born June 6, 1933, in Fayette, the daughter of Lawrence and Katherine (Kempton) Kent. She received her education in Connecticut and Fayette.
On February 11, 1952, she married Lyle (Pete) Gordon in Farmington. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she was employed at Aramark at the University of Farmington, and at GH Bass from where she retired.
She is survived by her four sons, William (Bill) and companion, Peggy Smith of Wilton, Fred and Cynthia of Newport News, VA, Lyle, Jr.and companion, Jill Davis of Farmington, and Tom of Jay; three daughters,
Betty and her husband, Dara Maguire of Farmington, Theresa and her husband, Jon Karkos of Temple, and Patricia and her husband Ronald Stanley of Wilton; 15 grandchildren; Joshua and Jennifer Gordon, Michelle Welch, Jonathan Boutilier, Aisling and Eoghan Maguire, Scottie and Edward Swinton, Chris Gordon, Kim Pease, Katie Hodel, Justin Gordon, Kayla Karkos, Dylan Gordon; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Lyle (Pete) Gordon on Oct. 2, 2006, and her sibling, Eugene F Kent on May 14, 2010.
Ronald Chester Hurd
CHESTERVILLE -– Ronald Chester Hurd, 60, of Chesterville, passed away unexpected of natural causes on Oct. 29, 2011 at his home in Chesterville.
He was born on March 30, 1951 in Gardiner, the son of Chester and Venus (McFarland) Hurd. Ron grew up in South Gardiner, graduating from Gardiner High School in 1970.
He joined the United States Army, serving his country as a mechanic until 1976. In 1976, with no break in service, he continued with government service and worked at Togus Veterans Administration until he retired in 1998.
Ron was married to Dolores “Dody” (Pushard) Mckenzie from 1971-1981. He later married Belle Purington in 1988. She predeceased him in 2004. Ron resided with his fiancee, Rolene Harris at the time of his passing.
Ron served as Commander of American Legion Smith Wiley Post in Gardiner. He enjoyed
hunting
, fishing, fly fishing, gardening, camping, playing cards with his family and friends, collecting stamps and coins and many other things. He was also very proud of and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their games, plays, concerts, and lessons, teaching them to drive, fish and would have conversations about whatever they might be learning at the time and often told them tall tales.
He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Belle Hurd; brother, Walker Hurd; sisters, Bonnie Gagne, Louise Corkum, Margarette Greenleaf and Thelma Golden; and a special family friend, Ed Goff. He will be sadly missed by his fiancee, Rolene Harris of Chesterville; his daughters, Ronda Haskell and her husband, Michael of West Gardiner, Grace Palmer and her husband, Michael of South Gardiner, Christal Hurd of West Gardiner; stepdaughter, LouAnn Harris and her husband, Jeffery of Chesterville; Steven Allen of South Gardiner; grandchildren, Shawn Palmer, Michelle Stafford, Dylan Haskell, Abigail Haskell, Kaleb Hurd, Kaden Adams, Kayla Harris, Jeffery Harris, Sara Allen, Shawna Allen, Steven Allen, Jr., Brian Harris, Brandi Harris, Chadd Harris, Courtney Harris, Josh Harris, Jeremy Harris, Jason Furbush, Alicia Bedard, Kevin Furbush, Marissa McKenna, John McKenna, Alan Dawes, Heather Dawes, Steve Alden, Amanda Alden and Ben Alden; sisters, MaryLou Hill and her husband, Daniel of Vienna; Carol Hurd and Cheryl MacArthur and her husband, Arthur, all of New Hampshire; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Earland W. Masterman
AUGUSTA –- Earland W. Masterman, 88, of Weld, died peacefully with his wife and family by his side, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta on October 28, 2011.
He was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Weld, the son of Algie and Carroll (Smith) Masterman. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Roland Plaisted, until his mom died. At this time, Ray and Althea Jenne took him under their wings until his graduation from Weld High School in 1941.
Earland enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the age of 19 and was the youngest Air Cadet wherever he travelled. Mastering the Pilot trainer Bi-Plane in Texas, he went on to Edwards AFB in California to re-engineer the P38 aircraft used in the Pacific Theater.
Settling down in Hollywood, CA after the war, Earland was called back to Weld when grandfather Bert fell ill.
There he met and married the love of his life, our mother, Olene, (Lee), in 1949. Together, they raised three sons and three daughters in Wilton and Weld.
He spent his career at International paper Company, working at all points along the Androscoggin River in Livermore Falls, Chisholm and Jay. He was a highly respected, valuable and knowledgeable millwright.
His wife was a stay-at-home mom and the entire family farmed and gardened together for many years.
After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed several years of traveling, splitting their years between Florida and Weld, always making new friends along the journey. Earland was an avid amateur photographer, family historian, professional putterer, cane maker, part-time farmer, tall-tale teller, girl teaser, practical joker, town historian, former invaluable member of the “hysterical society” and, most importantly, the eternal rock of his family. He will long be remembered for his sense of humor, responsibility, and unfailing honor. He spent many hours appreciating his membership in the Weld Historical Society.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Lee; son, Steven Masterman and his wife, Kathy, daughter, Joan Masterman, all of Weld; daughter, Kathleen Masterman and husband, Warren Elliott of Dryden; daughter, Cheryl Adams and husband, Kevin of Wilton; son, Ronald Masterman and wife, Maryann of Zebulon, NC; his grandchildren, Tess Murphy, Shanna Dorey and Bryce Masterman; several step-grandchildren; his great-grandchildren, Emaline Dorey, Kathryn Dorey, Charlie Murphy and Earland Murphy and several step-great-grandchildren; siblings, Gladys Shink and husband, Bernard of Jay, Harold Smith and wife, Ginnette of Canada
and Chery Smith of Canada
; lifelong friend, Rusty Lee and his wife, Donna of Weld; numerous nieces, nephews and oodles of close acquaintances and friends (you know who you are and that you are loved).
He was predeceased by his parents; his youngest son, Robert Masterman; his siblings, Ruth Robinson and her husband, Verne, Carl Plaisted and his wife, Shirley, Esther Howard and her husband, Elwin, Ethel Fillion and her husband, Joseph, Bernard Plaisted and his wife, Dottie, Bessie McIntire and her husband, Don, Beverly Packard and her husband, Ernest, James Smith, Donald Smith, Marie Smith, Floyd Smith and Raymond Smith.
