James Dixwell Williams
RUMFORD -- James Dixwell Williams, 61, of 218 Pine St., died Wednesday, March 28 at his home, after a short illness with lung cancer.
He was born on July 26, 1939 in Portland, the son of Homer Lee and Eleanor Elizabeth Small Williams. He was educated in Rumford schools and attended Stephens High School. He served in the US Navy as a fireman recruit.
He married Marsha St. Cyr on October 24, 1959. He enjoyed traveling, woodworking, painting and spending time with his loving family.
He is survived by his wife of Rumford; two daughters, Dawn Hinckley of Rumford, and Melissa and her husband, Robert Munzner of Rumford; three sons, James and his wife, Terri Williams of Mexico, David and his wife, Betsy Williams of Rumford, and Jeffrey and his wife, Michelle of Las Vegas, NV; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, David Williams of Arundel and Donald Williams of Pemaguid Point, ME.
Claude A. Quigley
GULFPORT, FLORIDA -- Quigley, Claude A., 81, of Gulfport, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at St. Petersburg General Hospital.
He came here in 1977 from his native Rumford, Maine, where he was a foreman for Oxford Paper Co. He was a Navy veteran of World War 11. He attended Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and was a member of the American Legion and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Rumford.
Survivors include his wife, Anita; a son, Timothy, North Attleboro, MA; and a sister, Arlene Wagner, Smithfield, R.I.
The services are under the direction of David C. Gross Funeral Homes and Crematory, Central Avenue Chapel, St Petersburg. Interment will be at Bay Pines National Cemetery.
Fidele J. Gallant
FARMINGTON - Fidele J. Gallant, 89, a resident of Cozy Cove Road in Livermore, died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at the Franklin Memorial Hospital following a long illness. He had been a resident of Parkview Nursing Home for two years.
He was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada
on March 9, 1912, the son of John P. and Celine M. Poirier Gallant and one of 18 children. He attended St. John Grammar School and Stephen's High School in Rumford.
On August 31, 1940, he married the former Theodora A. Therrien at the St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay and they made their home on Stratford Avenue in Rumford. Fidele was employed at Doiron's Market in Rumford and later at Oxford Paper Company in the cutter room, retiring in 1976. He also helped his wife with her income tax business known as Oxford County Tax Service in Rumford for many years. In 1980 they moved to Livermore
and made their summer home into a year round residence.
He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay and a former communicant of St. Athanasius and St. John's Church in Rumford. He was
a member of the Quarter Century Club of Oxford Paper Company and a former member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd & 4th Degree, Council # 2091 of Rumford.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years of Livermore, two daughters, Kathleen Gallant of Canton and Laurene Juhola and her husband Roger of
Carver, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, Donald Jellison, Karen Daise, Mark, Keith, and Heidi Jellison, Laurel Dyer, Eric and Kendra Juhola, three great-grandchildren, Jason Desper, Daniel Christie and Jessica Daise.
Dennis "Denny" Edward Adams
PORTLAND -- Dennis "Denny" Edward Adams, 66, a lifelong resident of Wilton, died Wednesday morning, November 28, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born Apr. 23, 1935, in Lewiston, the son of Harland E. and Jeanette (Watson) Adams. He attended Wilton schools, graduating from Wilton Academy in 1953.
Mr. Adams served in the Army for a short time before returning to Wilton when he married Susan Holmes on Sept. 29, 1956. That same year he went to work with his father operating the family gas station and garage in 1956.
He eventually took over Wilton Oil Co. from his father and continued to own and operate the garage until this year.
He was an avid football fan and helped start the area's Little League Football program in the early 1960's in which he coached and refereed for many years.
He was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time at his camp on East Carry Pond as well as
hunting
, fishing, and smelting. He loved playing cards with the "local boys" and was a lifetime member of the "Pitch Parlor". He was also a member of the Farmington Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his parents Harland and Jeanette of Wilton; his wife of Susan of 45 years; one son, Edgar Adams and his wife Natalie of Wilton; two daughters, Denise Bell and her husband, Terry, Sr. of Farmington, and Deborah E. Tracy and her husband, Dale E. of East Wilton; mother-in-law Lola Holmes of Wilton; five grandchildren, Chad Bubier and his fiance, Sara Yeaton of Jay, Terry "T.J." Bell, Jr of Farmington, Amanda Bubier and her companion, David Holt of East Wilton, Derek and Dara Tracy of East Wilton; one great-grandchild, Rhylie Mae Bubier of Jay; three sisters, Gail Karkos and her husband, Lyle of Temple, Donna Cunnliffe and her husband, Eric of East Wilton, and Shirleen Dolder and her husband, Robert of NH; a sister in-law, Sally Eames of Livermore; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Maureen Bell.
Esther Searles
SABATTUS -- Esther Searles, 102, of Sabattus, formerly of Lewiston and Dixfield, died Sunday at the Sabattus Residential Care Center in Sabattus, where she had resided since 1996. She was formerly of Lewiston and Dixfield.
Born Oct. 27, 1899 in Weld, she was the daughter of Elmer and Leona (Pratt) Magoon. She received her education in local schools.
For 34 years she was employed at Stowell-MacGregor in Dixfield and for 20 years was a housekeeper in Auburn and Rumford. She was a member of the Monitor Chapter #72, Order of the Eastern Star, Dixfield.
She will be remembered as a dear person whose greatest enjoyment came from working. Until very recently, she would spend time working and helping in the kitchen at the residential care center.
She is survived by her grandson, Richard Gerald Tracy, Sr., and his wife, Rita Tracy of Lewiston; her granddaughter, Geraldine Peach of Oswego, NY; her brother in-law, Milton Vaughn and his wife, Mary of West Peru; her great grandson, Richard Gerald Tracy, Jr., and his wife, Diane of Livermore; three great-great grandchildren, Crystal Tracy, Katie Tracy and Richard Gerald Tracy III; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two husbands, Gerald Tracy and Fred Searles; an infant son, Malcom Tracy; and another son, Harland Tracy.
Following cremation at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn, spring burial at the Demerritt Cemetery, West Peru.
Arrangements are in the care of the Wiles Funeral Home, Dixfield.
Margaret K. Thornton
RUMFORD -- Margaret L. Thornton, 79, died Sunday March 17, 2002 at her home on the South Rumford Road.
Born in Wilsons Mills, Maine on July 7, 1922, she was the daughter of Joseph and Yula L. (Hall) Stevens. She attended Gould Academy. She retired from Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Rumford in 1988.
She was a member of Mount Zircon Chapter 142, Order of Eastern Star and the Rumford Point Congregational Church.
She was married in Rumford, Maine on September 20, 1941 to the late William E. Thornton, Sr., who died in Rumford on May 25, 1976.
Survivors include her son, William Thornton, Jr. of Rumford; three daughters, Patricia Blake of Bethel, Sharon Samela of Waterbury, CT, and Margo Davis of Auburn, six brothers, Joseph of New Hampshire, Guy, Richard, Albert, Philip, Alfred, all of Massachusetts; three sisters, Beverly Parent of Vermont, Phyllis Whitman of MA and Sally Lebeer, 10 grandchildren, Brian and Harlan Blake, and Amy Wheeler of Bethel, Joseph and Margaret Thornton of Rumford, Sara Seckington and Jennifer Samela of CT, Todd Davis of Bethel, Ryan Davis of Rumford and Kate Davis of Auburn; and eight great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Bud; and two sisters, Alberta and Pauline.
Funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at the Rumford Point Congregational Church with Rev. Deborah Jenks officiating. Interment in the spring will be in the Abbots Mills Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with visitation at 7 p.m. Wednesday by Mt. Zircon Chapter 142 Eastern Star. Those who desire may contribute to a charity of their choice in her memory.
Ellis B. Quinn
DIXFIELD -- Ellis B. Quinn, 76, of 5 High Street, died Tuesday March 27 at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born on April 5, 1924 in Orleans, MA, the son of Lester and Eva Ellis Quinn. He attended schools in Orleans.
During WW II, he served in the US Coast Guard as a Radioman 3rd Class. During the war, he received a commendation for his participation in the rescue of three men marooned on the Heinz Pier in Atlantic City, NJ.
Mr. Quinn owned and operated Central Package Store in Orleans for 40 years. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, American Legion, member and past President of the Oxford County Mineral and Gems Association, Lapidary Society, Oakdale Country Club in Mexico, ME, Brewster Country Club in Brewster, MA, and Dennis Country Club in Dennis, MA.
He was a past president of the Massachusetts Liquior Store Assn. He was a commercial pilot since 1950. He loved his family and he enjoyed flying and was an avid golfer.
He married Phyllis Andersson in September 11, 1983. He aided and assisted his wife with her duties in the Maine and Massachusetts Business Professional Woman's Club of USA.
He is survived by his loving wife of Dixfield; three daughters, Patricia Quinn of Melbourne, FL, Karen Heinemann of Grayson, GA, and Paula and her husband, Ross Ringheim of Chatham, MA; three stepdaughters, Diana Hogan of Dennisport, MA, Patti-Anne and her husband, Stephen Faucher of Shrewsbury, MA, and Arlette and her husband, Robert Robitaille of Lisbon Falls, Me.; one stepson, William Woodward of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren; three brothers, Warren Quinn and William Quinn, both of Orleans MA, and Leslie Quinn of Ft. Walton, FL.
He was predeceased by a brother, Howard Quinn
Sylvia L. Cummings
WESTPARIS -- Sylvia L. Cummings, 87 died Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at her residence in West Paris, Maine.
Born in Greenwood, Maine on September 14, 1913, she was the daughter of Lester and Alberta (Elwell) Morgan. She was a graduate of West Paris High School and Gorham Normal School.
She was a school teacher at Patch Mountain School House, Richardson Hollow and Andrew's Four Corner School House. She worked in factories in the Norway/South Paris area and also for Western Older Citizen Councilas an Elder Advocat.
Mrs. Cummings was a member of the Deering Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir and her beautiful voice will be missed. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women; the Euterpean Club; Norway Paris Senior Citizen Band. She received an Outstanding Citizen Award.
She was married in August of 1935 to the late Clarence C. Cummings, who died on May 19, 1990.
Survivors include one son, Wayne Cummings and his wife, June of Deery, NH; three daughters, Charmaine Penley and her husband, Albert, Jr., Lorraine Bailey and her husband, Jeffrey, and Mrs. Corrine Hammond, all of West Paris; one sister, Madge Bland of Norwich, CN; one sister in law, Lydia Smith of Clearwater, FL; eight grandchildren, Alan Bailey and his wife, Karen, Deana Abbott and her husband, Danny, and Douglas Penley, all of West Paris, Susan Ptak and her husband, Tom of Deery, NH, Wayne Cummings, Jr. and Cheryl Cummings of Clearwater, FL, Dawna Kazregis and her husband, Walter Kazregis of West Peru, and Carina Hammond of Portland, ME; eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Carla Bailey, and a son in law, Gerald Hammond.
Joseph Ernest "Pea Soup" Gallant
TOGUS -- Joseph Ernest "Pea Soup" Gallant, age 75, formerly of Lewiston and
Rumford, died Monday, November 26, 2001, at the Veteran's Hospital in Togus where he had been a patient for the past year.
He was born in Rumford, July 27, 1926, a son of George M. and Ida (Arsenault) Gallant. He was raised on Waldo Street in Rumford and attended Stephens High School.
Mr. Gallant joined the Merchant Marines as a young man and was serving in Germany until an injury forced his return to the United States. He enjoyed boxing growing up with his brothers on Waldo Street, horse racing and spending time with his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by four brothers, George "Puggy" and his wife, Dolores of Springfield, MA, John "Pete" of Ellenton, FL, Clarence "Yap" of Rumford and Walter "Butsy" Gallant of Rumford; three sisters, Marion "Doris" Gallant and her husband, Maurice of Rumford, Marie "Rita" Gallant of Rumford, and Mary "Ida" Luther and her husband, Charles of Roxbury; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Alfred Gallant, Jr.
He was predeceased by brothers, Alfred "Speed" and Edward "Elwee" Gallant.
