William G. Whitmore

DAVENPORT, Fla. — William G. Whitmore, 76, of Davenport, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at Bishop Gray Health Care Center, in Davenport.

He was born Aug. 25, 1928, in Caribou, Maine.

Mr. Whitmore was a retired carpenter.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

William was a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Lake Wales, and American Legion Post 8, of Winter Haven.

He was preceded in death by brothers Preston and Harold Whitmore, and a sister, Clair Cheney.

He is survived by his wife, Lois A. Whitmore, of Davenport; daughters Karen Jacques, of Thompson, Maine, and Donna McKay, of Whitefield, Maine; sons, Gilbert Whitmore, of Augusta, Maine, and Randolph Whitmore, of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Millicent Johndro, of Fort Fairfield, Maine, and Hazel Todd, of East Haven, Conn.; a brother, Perry Whitmore, of Chestertown, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

There will be no services.

Donations may be made to Bishop Gray Health Care Center, 206 West Orange St., Davenport 33837.

Arrangements are by Lane-Holt Funeral Home, 233 North 9th St., Haines City, Fla.

Roy F. McKenna

CHELSEA — Roy F. McKenna, 70, of Chelsea, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, peacefully at his home with his family by his side.

He was born Sept. 10, 1930, in Gardiner, the son of Donald and Minnie (Bickford) McKenna, and graduated from Gardiner High School.

Roy was the owner and operator of three service stations in the area for many years. He also worked at Edwards Mfg. Co., Edwards Division, for a few years, and later drove a bus for handicapped children until his retirement.

His joy was his family. He also enjoyed going out to eat, traveling, hunting and fishing.

Roy was a member of Hallowell Odd Fellows Chapter.

Mr. McKenna was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Margaret Terry, and a nephew, Brookie Terry.

He is survived by his wife, Marie (Veilleux) McKenna; his daughter, Melody McKenna, and her fiance, Thomas Park, of Chelsea; a sister, Dorothy Allen, of Augusta; several nieces and nephews, including Peter Terry and Donna Hathaway, of Searsport, Blaine Brown Jr., of Pittston, and Elaine Bumford, of Augusta; a grandson, Joey Lipinski; sisters-in-law, Irene Lagasse, and her husband, Alfred, Marianne Brown, and Joanne Trask; Lisa Severence, who was like a daughter to him; and his special pets, "Shila," "Tigger," "MJ," and "Porgy."

Relatives and friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4. Burial will follow, at Forest Grove Cemetery.

Henry B. Homer

AUGUSTA — Henry Burleigh Homer, 82, of Manchester, passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

He was born the son of Edward and Myrtle (Huff) Homer, April 26, 1918, in Monson, and attended local schools. Henry graduated from Monson Academy in Monson and Northeastern University in Massachusetts. He served in the United States Army during World War II and later as a Seabee.

He went on to become a superintendent for Stewart & Williams Construction (later known as Salter Corporation), where he worked for 43 years until his retirement. Henry was a long standing member of Northern New England Carpenters and was a 50-plus-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Augusta. He was also a member of Run For Your Life in Manchester. He was very interested in sports of all kinds, loved fishing and all outdoor activities.

Henry is survived by his beloved wife Hazel (MacCurdy) Homer, of Manchester; sons, Roger Homer and his wife, Sandie, of Zephyrhills, Fla., William Homer and his partner, Steve Hicks, of Greene; daughter, Kathy Myers and two granddaughters, Amy and Heather Myers, of Shelburne, Vt.; stepson, Gary MacCurdy, of Augusta, and half-sister, Dorothy Forbus, of Monson, and many nieces and nephews.

At Henry's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. A committal service will be planned for the spring at Mount Hope Cemetery in Augusta. Donations in Henry's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 53 Federal St., Brunswick ME 04011. Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home of Richmond.

Richard E. Kennedy

SIDNEY — Richard Edward Kennedy, of Sidney, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at the MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility at Glenridge in Augusta with family at his side.

Richard was born and raised in Monmouth, son of Ruby (True) and Fred E. Kennedy. He was a 1947 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He was employed by the Farmers Home Administration for 33 years, retiring in 1975. During his retirement, he enjoyed the outdoors and reading. He was a loving husband to his wife, Jeanette, of 46 years, and a wonderful father to his two daughters, Nancy Kennedy Marshall, of Sorrento, and Ronde Kennedy, of Southlake, Texas. Richard was a doting grandfather to four grandchildren, Briana, Nicole, Nicholas and Kaleigh.

Survivors also include his sister, Mary and her husband, Charles Sherman; two sons-in-law; several nieces and a multitude of friends, who loved him dearly and admired him for his wisdom, wit and genuiness.

At his request, there will be no public service and a private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Roberts Funeral Home of Winthrop.

Robert R. Larson

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. — Robert R. Larson, 78, of Jackson Street in Attleboro Falls, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Bristol Nursing Home in Attleboro. He was the husband of the late Florence Nightingale (Slade) Larson, who died March 23, 1992.

He was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Chicago, Ill, son of the late Lester Ernest and Lucille M. (Hoenicke) Larson. He resided in North Attleboro for the past 47 years having moved from Plainville.

He was a veteran of the Army, having served during World War II and later with the Air Force.

He was employed as a printer for Fuller Box Co. in North Attleboro, retiring in 1987, and was previously employed by Mason Box Co. in North Attleboro.

As a longtime member of Central Congregational Church in the Attleboro Falls section of North Attleboro, he served the church as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and trustee.

He was actively involved in North Attleboro politics and once served on the North Attleboro Planning Board. He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing golf.

He leaves two daughters, Linda L. Harrop, of Attleboro Falls, and Deborah L. Davis, of Pomfret, Conn.; son, Edward L. Larson, of Wayne, Maine; sister, Lois L. Waite, of Attleboro Falls; brother, Norman L. Larson, of Fort Walton, Fla.; five grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A musical tribute and service of remembrance will be held at a time and place to be announced. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery and Arboretum in North Attleboro. Arrangements are by Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Ave., Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro.

Louise E. Martin

CANTON — Louise E. Martin, 79, of 85 Pride Road in Auburn, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Victoria Villa in Canton.

She was born in Winthrop, March 20, 1922, the daughter of Sylvester and Rose (Hart) Gilman, and attended Winthrop schools.

She married John Martin, Feb. 28, 1941, in Wilton, who died Jan. 6, 1978. She was a housewife and homemaker.

She was a member of the Lewiston Grange and the Salvation Army.

Survivors include two sons, Andrew and his wife, Suu, of Lewiston, Keith and his wife, Cathy, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Sharry A. Morse, of Auburn; a sister, Violet Genthner, of Damariscotta; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 9 to 11 a.m. at Dillingham & Son Memorial Chapel, 62 Spring St., Auburn, with the funeral to be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, with the Rev. Anthony Lombardi officiating. Committal prayers will be at 1 p.m. at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

Harriet E.T. McCroary

WINTHROP — Harriet Estelle Towle McCroary, 94, of Winthrop, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Heritage Manor after a short illness.

Harriet was born Aug. 5, 1906, in Winthrop, the daughter of Charles and Janet Towle. She was a graduate of Oak Grove Seminary and Colby College (Phi Beta Kappa), class of 1928.

She taught at the Mary C. Wheeler School in Providence, R.I.

Harriet married James T. McCroary, of North Adams, Mass., a Colby classmate in 1932. She and her husband returned to Winthrop in 1934 to assume control of the Hillside Frost Farm and continued that operation until 1956. She resumed teaching in the Winthrop school system in 1946 and retired in 1972.

She was an exceptional teacher, still remembered by her students. Her special interests were nature studies, science, music and genealogy.

She was a trustee of the Bailey Library, a member of B.P.W., Mayflower Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames and Maine Retired Teachers. Trained as a classical pianist, she was active in both Coda Chorus and Winthrop Bell Ringers.

Following her retirement, she traveled extensively, visiting every continent except Antarctica.

She was predeceased by her husband, James T. McCroary, retired New England telephone executive, who died in 1969, and a grandson, James T. McCroary III, who died in 1958.

Survivors include her son, James T. McCroary, and his wife, Judith, of Winthrop; daughter, Mary Hutchinson, of New Gloucester; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 2, at the St. Francis Xavier Church in Winthrop with the Rev. Sylvio Levesque the Celebrant. Spring burial will be at the East Winthrop Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Winter St. PO Box 346, Augusta ME 04332-0346.

Rev. Theodore A. Perkins

LEVANT — Rev. Theodore Albert Perkins, 83, a native of Levant, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor.

He was born April 27, 1917, in Bangor, son of John Frederick Perkins and Madge Emma (Waugh) Perkins. He went through the Levant school system and graduated valedictorian from the class of 1938 of Hermon High School.

Rev. Perkins and his father operated a large dairy farm. After it was sold, he worked in the First National Grocery Store in Bangor until he went into the military in June of 1942. He graduated from Embry Riddle School of aviation, but shortly after was taken into the Chaplain Corps of the Mobile Air Service Command until his discharge in October of 1945. He returned to Levant and was given the post of assistant pastor, organist and other offices. The Rev. Perkins entered the University of Maine in the fall of 1946.

He was called to the parish of the South Levant Baptist Church in October of 1948 and the parishes of West Levant Baptist and Levant Village Baptist in March of 1949. West Levant Baptist combined with South Levant Baptist in 1956. Rev. Perkins resigned from Levant Village in 1959. He was pastor at South Levant a total of 36 years, when he retired in 1984.

Rev. Perkins taught adult classes for the government and day school in Levant as principal from 1952 to 1955. In 1956 he was called to teach at Hampden Academy, where he was for 22 years. He had failing health in the late 70s until his death.

Survivors include a sister, Louise E. McCutcheon, of Etna; sister-in-law, Estelle Perkins; nephew, Grant Perkins, of Ellsworth; nieces, Sandra and her husband, Michael Bell, of Carmel, Linda Centanni and her husband, Joe, of Oceanport, N.J., Dawn Sargent and her husband, Ralph, of Gorham, Jeannette Vanadistine, of Steep Falls; many grandnieces, nephews and friends.

Rev. Perkins was predeceased by a brother, Howard, and a sister, Arlene; niece, Ardis Jameson, and a nephew, George Tardiff.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the Brookings-Smith Funeral Home, 133 Center St., Bangor.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 2, at the South Levant Baptist Church with the Rev. Philip Bean, pastor, and the Rev. Dick Woehr, co-officiating. Spring interment will be at the Waugh Cemetery in Levant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Church Fellowship Hall after the service.

Those who wish to remember the Rev. Perkins in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the South Levant Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 239 South Levant Road, Levant ME 04456.
