Donald A. Yeaton

1923-2003

WINTHROP — Donald Adelbert Yeaton, 79, of Winthrop, died at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, following a massive stroke suffered days earlier. He passed in his sleep with his family at his side.

Don was born in Belgrade on Dec. 26, 1923, the son of Percy and Mildred (Page) Yeaton. In spite of a birth injury that forever caused a limp and impaired dexterity on one side, he was his father's right-hand-man while growing up on the family dairy farm. Although his handicap kept him on the sidelines in sports and on the home front during war, it didn't keep him from raising four talented and successful children of whom he was very proud.

Don graduated from Belgrade High School in 1942 and attended two years of Gates Business School in Augusta. He married Audrey Randall of Augusta on June 5, 1948, and they lived in Hallowell before moving to their Winthrop Center Road Residence in 1957.

Mr. Yeaton worked 30 years as a supply clerk for the Maine State Police and moonlighted Saturdays at Brewer's Hardware Store in Hallowell. After retiring from the state, he worked at Audette's Hardware in Winthrop until, in 1993, a heart condition forced him to hang up his clerk's apron for good.

Retirement, however, never slowed him down as Don could always find a job that needed to be done, whether it was a repair around his house or someone else's. And, every year he planted a garden so big that he was busy tending it all summer and into the fall. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, watching birds come to the feeders he diligently kept filled for them, and Tuesday night Grange meetings.

Don was predeceased by his infant brother, Lawrence Yeaton; his sister, Bessie Dyer, and her husband, John.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey; sons Calvin Yeaton and his wife, Linda of Winthrop and Dr. Howard Yeaton and his wife, Christa Lance of Gansevoort, N.Y.; daughters Judith Yeaton of Wayne and Sylvia Kjellson and her husband, Carl of Bakersfield, Calif.; three granddaughters, four grandsons, and one great-granddaughter; three nieces, two nephews and several cousins.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, with the Reverend Maggie Edmundson officiating. Interment is at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Audubon Society, 20 Gilsland Farm Road, Falmouth 04105.
