Harry C. Norton
NORRIDGEWOCK — Harry C. Norton, 80, of Wilder Hill Road, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, surrounded by his family.
Harry was born Sept. 27, 1920, in Lexington, son of Leroy and Edith (Skilings) Norton, and graduated valedictorian from Central High School in North New Portland in 1939.
He was employed for 30 years as a mechanic with W.H. Hinman Co. and was later self-employed and previously owned Suburban Equipment and My Cousin's Place Restaurant in Norridgewock.
Harry was a lifelong member of the Norridgewock Baptist Church, District Deputy and Noble Grand of I.O.O.F. 34, master of the Somerset Grange, selectman for 15 years and assessor for 14 years for the town of Norridgewock, and his favorite pastime was writing Iamic Pentameter Poetry, several of which were published.
Harry was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Dorothy (Norton) and husband, Ernest Thibeault, and brother, Eugene Norton.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jennie (Quimby) Norton of Norridgewock; his children, Beverly Patrie of Madison, Paula and her husband, David Fowler of Madison, Cecil and his wife, Celia Norton of Norridgewock, Virginia and her husband, Paul Gagne, of Fairfield, Faylene and her husband, Myron Seavey, of Season Dairy Farm of North Anson, and Glendon and his wife, Julie Norton, of North Anson; his brother, Stanley and his wife, Glenice Norton, of Augusta; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at the Norridgewock Baptist Church with the Rev. Jay Wilson, pastor, officiating. Burial to take place at the Sunset View Cemetery
in Norridgewock.
Elin L. Soderstrom
STRONG — Elin L. Soderstrom, 80, of Strong, formerly of Dover-Foxcroft and Houlton, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Sandy River HealthCare Center in Farmington where she had been a resident for the past seven months following a long illness.
She was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Woodland, the daughter of Peter and Hilda J. Viberg. She attended Stockholm schools.
She married Verner Soderstrom in 1938; he died in 1997. She moved to Farmington in 1998 to live with family, traveling to California and Ohio yearly for brief stays with daughters.
She was employed for years at Mayo Memorial Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. She was a member of the Baptist Church of Dover-Foxcroft where she sang in the church choir. One of the highlights of her life was a visit to the Crystal Cathedral to hear Dr. Robert Schuller.
She is survived by daughters, Sandra Dixon of Strong, Janet Pedeu of Elyria, Ohio, and Faye Donovan of Redlands, Calif.; as well as eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Maxine Gregg of Granby, Conn.
There will be a private family celebration of her life. A graveside service will be held in New Sweden at the convenience of the family. Arrangements under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, 108 Court St., Farmington.
Robert W. Beane
FARMINGTON — Robert Whittier Beane, 76, of Farmington, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Maine Veterans Hospital at Togus, where he had been a patient for the past several weeks following a long illness.
He was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Wilton, the son of Charles D. Beane and Celia (Whittier) Beane Nile, and attended Farmington and Wilton schools. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of "Buck Sergeant." He served in the European Theater of War in Germany and Austria being taken Prisoner of War in Austria. While in the service he received a combat infantry and good conduct badge and battle stars for the Rhineland and Central Europe involvement and Congressional Medal of Honor. He was assigned to the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Unit.
He was married to Virginia Richards of Vienna, Maine, at North Vienna Methodist Church by the Rev. Cleves Henderson, July 17, 1948.
He was employed for many years by Sinski's Motor Mart, Nickerson Buick Olds, and Everett Vining Construction. He also was self-employed as a carpenter for 20 years. After his retirement, he enjoyed remodeling small engines and making antique furniture for his family and friends. He enjoyed square dancing with the Triple Town Swingers and along with his wife served as vice president and president of the club.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia, of 53 years of Farmington; a daughter, Cynthia Beane Howard and husband, Earle, of Port St. Lucy, Fla.; a son, Eric Beane and wife, Millie, of Bridgton; a sister, Clarice Jellison of Wilton; six grandchildren, Robert O. Beane Jr. of Clinton, S.C., Erica and husband, Kevin Therrien, and Aaron and Caleb Howard, of Port St. Lucy, Fla., Nichole and Joshua Beane of Bridgton; four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth, Krista and Kimberly Beane of South Carolina; stepsister, Marion Marquis of Farmington; one step-granddaughter, Debbie Young; three step-great-grandchildren, Jacob, Danny and Ashley; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Robert O. Beane, March 29, 1971, and a brother, Richard Beane, May 21, 1957.
Visitation hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Adams Funeral Home, 108 Court St., Farmington. At Bob's request there will be no funeral service. Cecile M. Siviski
YARMOUTH — Cecile M. Siviski, 81, of Yarmouth, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Brentwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Yarmouth after a lengthy illness.
The oldest of 10 children, she was born in Waterville, daughter of Joseph and Bernadette (Ducas) Nicholas. A lifelong resident of the central Maine area, she attended Fairfield schools and spent most of her life in Winslow, where she raised a family. She enjoyed being a homemaker and was a dedicated mother to her four children.
She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in Winslow for more than 50 years.
Her husband, Edmund "LaMouche" Siviski, died Oct. 7, 1972.
She had worked at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Library in Waterville until the age of 70 and was also a hairdresser at Evangeline Beauty Salon in Waterville during her younger years. She enjoyed family camping and fishing expeditions with her husband. She was very active with community service, volunteering for years in Cancer and Heart Fund drives. An avid sports fan, she had been an active member and officer with the Winslow Athletic Boosters and the Winslow Music Boosters.
Survivors include three sons, Michael and his wife, Kathy, of Winslow, Ronald and his wife, Patricia, of Yarmouth, Peter and his wife, Janet, of Lewiston; daughter, Paula Richardson and her husband, Jay, of Cumberland; three sisters, Marion Will of Scarborough, Adeline Paquette of East Hartford, Conn., and Regina Gall of Scarborough; three brothers, Edward Nicholas of Chelsea, Robert Nicholas of Winslow and Norman Nicholas of Winslow; four grandsons, Joseph, Matthew, Stephen, Scott; five granddaughters, Elizabeth, Jenna, Jane, Melanie, Anya.
She was predeceased by two brothers, William Nicholas and Leo Nicholas; one sister, Jeannette King; and an infant daughter, Mary.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at St. John the Baptist Church, Monument Street, Winslow. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

Ruth Cloudman Briggs
1918-2002
AUGUSTA — Ruth Cloudman Briggs, 83, of Augusta and Hallowell, passed away quietly in her sleep Thursday morning, March 28, 2002, at Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Gray Birch.
Miss Briggs was born in Rumford, June 23, 1918, the eldest child of Henry Adie Briggs and Mary Morse Briggs. She attended Augusta schools, graduating an academic honor student from Cony High School in 1936.
She graduated from Bradford Jr. College in 1939. While at Bradford she earned a Pupils Certificate from Trinity College of Music in London, England, enhancing a lifelong love for music which included giving recitals as a soprano soloist at civic groups, weddings and other musical gatherings. Miss Briggs made an album recording of songs in the early 1950s, and was active in the Augusta Chapter of the Cecilia Club for many years.
Writing and books were among Miss Briggs many passions. She penned several short stories, poems and a novel, all yet to be published. Her love for literature led her to pursue masters degrees in English and Library Science, which she earned from the University of Maine at Orono.
In 1946, after holding positions in the family business and the State of Maine, Miss Briggs embarked upon a career as a librarian. She was employed for the next 35 years at the Lithgow Library in Augusta, serving as the Head Librarian for last 15 years. She sponsored many innovative programs at the library and was co-founder of the Friends of the Lithgow Library.
Miss Briggs was also an accomplished artist whose oils and watercolors grace the walls of area businesses, libraries and the homes of friends and loved ones. Her work has been exhibited at the Ogunquit Art Center, Harlow Art Gallery and other private galleries. She was a long time member of the Kennebec Valley Art Association.
Miss Briggs was an avid collector of books, stamps and coins. She had a passion for her family's history and did extensive genealogical work. She had been a longstanding member of the Kennebec Historical Society where she served as secretary and as a member of the executive committee.
Miss Briggs was a former member of the Augusta Players and former vice president of the Augusta College Club. She was listed in Who's Who of American Women in 1977-78.
Miss Briggs was dedicated to her extended family, selflessly demonstrating a loving concern for her brothers, sister, nieces and nephews who deeply grieve at her passing.
Miss Briggs is survived by three brothers, Robert H. Briggs and his wife, Louise, of Hallowell, John W. Briggs and his wife, Janet, of Winthrop, and William M. Briggs of Jackson Hole, Wyo.; one sister, Mary Briggs Kendall and her husband, Richard G., of Auburn and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the family gravesite at Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta, at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the Kennebec Historical Society, 61 Winthrop St., Augusta 04330.

Doris Page Lane
1904-2002
FARMINGTON — Doris Page Lane, 97, of New Sharon, died Tuesday evening, March 26, 2002, at the Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center in Farmington.
She was born on Hampshire Hill, New Sharon, Nov. 6, 1904, a daughter of Hosee and Mattie (Lock) Page.
She made New Sharon her family's home after marrying Ernest Lane. He died in 1995.
Mrs. Lane was a homemaker to her husband and family. She belonged to the New Sharon Grange and enjoyed flower gardening, knitting, tatting and making various crafts.
She is survived by two grandsons, Richard Lane and his wife, Suzanne, of Cape Elizabeth, and Terrence Lane of Biddeford; two great-granddaughters, Debra Lane of Cape Elizabeth and Tera Lane of Farmington; a great-grandson, Rick Lane of Falmouth; nieces and nephews.
A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date in the spring at the New Sharon Cemetery.
Arrangements are in the care of the Wiles Funeral Home, Farmington.
Ellen I. 'Nellie' Merrill
1917-2002
STETSON — Ellen I. "Nellie" Merrill, 85, died March 29, 2002, at a Pittsfield health care facility following a long illness.
She was born in Rusagonis, New Brunswick, Jan. 5, 1917, the daughter of Frederick and Margaret (Fletcher) Charters. She attended schools in Canada, Levant and Stetson.
Nellie married Ralph N. Merrill in Bangor, April 18, 1934. Ralph died May 25, 2001 They had been married for 67 years.
Nellie loved to crochet and knit for her children and grandchildren. She was a former 4-H leader in Stetson. One of Nellie's hobbies was history, especially the history of Stetson. She wrote the second edition of The History of the Town of Stetson for their Sesquicentiennial.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Charles and Constance Merrill, and Ralph and Carolyn Merrill Jr., all of Stetson; one daughter and her husband, Shirley and Darrell Eells of Stetson; two sisters-in-law, Carmon Charters of Stetons and Jessie Brann of Grindstone; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchilren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Ralph Charters and Joseph Brann.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m Sunday, March 31 at the Brown Funeral Home, 34 High St., Newport, where a funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, April 1 with Pastor Al Worden officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot at Clarks Hill Cemtery in Stetson.
Virginia L. Park
1926-2002
LEWISTON — Virginia Lena "Ginny" Park, 75, of Farmington, died Thursday morning, March 28, 2002, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston as a result of injuries sustained after an accidental fall at her home on Saturday. March 16, 2002.
She was born May 16, 1926, in New Vineyard, a daughter of Harry O. and Lena Dell (Allen) Wells. She received her education in Farmington schools and was a graduate of Farmington High School. She continued her business education at Husson College, from which she graduated.
For 43 years, she was employed at Weber Insurance Co. in Farmington. On Dec. 8, 1944, she married Henry Goodyke. They made their home in Farmington for many years and following the death of her husband, she later married the Rev. Clyde Park on Oct. 7, 1989.
Ginny was a woman of great faith. She was a member of the Beans Corner Baptist Church in Jay and was a member of the Western Maine CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship) Committee. She was also treasurer of the Camp Good News Committee.
Many remember seeing her bicycling around her hometown in her free time. She enjoyed caring for her home and was most content when outdoors, tending her flower and vegetable gardens, cutting firewood, or picking strawberries for personal enjoyment or to assist the efforts at Pike's Farmstand. She was a kind and generous lady, always willing to help others.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Clyde Park of Farmington and Waterboro; three sisters, Bernice Wells Moore and Sylvia Wells Holbrook of New Vineyard and Frances Wells Robert of Windham; several nieces and nephews; four stepchildren, Bonnie Stevens and her husband, Willie, of Los Angeles, Calif., Clyde Park Jr. and his wife, Peggy, of Vergennes, Vt., Stephen Park and his wife, Colleen, of Springfield, Mass., and Timothy Park and his wife, Judi, of Knob Noster, Mo.; 10 step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, two brothers, George Wells and Venora "Pinkie" Wells; and four sisters, Alverna Wells Parlin, Marion Wells Orcutt, Ester Wells Fletcher and Emma Wells Hargreaves.

Barry Francis Carlson
1942-2002
WILTON — Barry Francis Carlson, 60, of Farmington, died while playing tennis with good friends at the Academy Hill courts in Wilton, Wednesday, May 29, 2002.
He was born May 23, 1942, in Northampton, Mass., and was the son of Marjorie Waterman Carlson and Francis Jence Carlson. The family lived on the Sophia Smith Homestead in Hatfield, Mass., when he was a young boy. They also spent many wonderful summers at their camp on Pine Island Lake in Westhampton, Mass. Barry graduated from Northampton High School in 1960 and served in the U.S. Army in Korea after graduation. He returned to attend the Stockbridge School of Agriculture where he received an Associate Degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. He enjoyed several winters skiing in Colorado and summers working at the Shawmut Inn in Kennebunkport, before settling in the Rangeley area in the early 1970s.
Barry met Sarah Terry at Saddleback Lake Lodge in June of 1975 where they enjoyed many hours on the Lodge tennis courts, hiking area mountains, and riding horses on nearby trails. They were married on June 30, 1979, in the garden of Sarah's childhood home in Waterville. Barry was the Food and Beverage Manager at Saddleback Ski Area in Rangeley and was the featured cowboy in the 1981/82 Saddleback advertising campaign when the area switched to a western motif. The couple moved to Farmington in 1983.
Barry was a loving father to F. Jence Carlson and Emma Mabel Carlson. His two primary passions in life were his family and the sport of tennis. He also enjoyed many other outdoor activities such as fishing, kayaking, skiing, camping, and biking. He was a volunteer ski instructor at Titcomb Mountain and was instrumental in starting the Mt. Blue High School girls tennis team, coaching the team for the first two years.
Barry was known for his kind, compassionate personality and his extremely dry sense of humor. As a family member recently said, "He was the kind of man who, as soon as you shook his hand, you knew you wanted to know him." He was always interested in what was going on in other people's lives, especially children. He loved watching his children and their friends in their various activities, spending many hours coaching baseball, gatekeeping during alpine races at Titcomb, and helping young people learn and enjoy the sports of tennis and skiing.
He was employed by ARAMark as a baker at the University of Maine at Farmington and at Camp Laurel in Readfield. His yeast rolls were legendary, the last batch having been enjoyed by Mt. Blue parents and students at the Academic Honors Banquet held on May 23rd at UMF.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah, and his children, Jence and Emma, of Farmington; his mother, Marjorie Waterman Carlson, his sister, Sandra Carlson Rossi, and his twin brother, Larry Jence Carlson of Northampton, Mass.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Francis Jence Carlson, and two brothers-in-law, George Fred Terry IV and Richard Nicholas Rossi.
A celebration of his life will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 3, at the Nordica Auditorium in Merrill Hall on the UMF campus. Those in attendance are invited to a time of continued fellowship and refreshment at the North Dining Hall following the service.
