Josephine Miriam Eyestone Allyn
2003
FARMINGTON — Josephine Miriam Eyestone Allyn, 91, wife of the late C. Vance Allyn, died peacefully in her home in Farmington on Monday morning, April 7, 2003.
Mrs. Allyn's excellent health allowed her to watch the continuing expansion of a family that included five children, eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and seven in-laws; she had reveled in her position as matriarch at a massive family reunion held every year since 1973.
She instilled in her progeny her passions for art, gardening, literature, music, generosity and a strong sense of family.
Mrs. Allyn was born in Foochow, China, as the only child of the late Rev. J. Bruce and Isabelle Douglas Longstreet Eyestone from Mt. Vernon, Iowa. She was raised and educated in China for 14 years until the family was forced to leave the country for political reasons in the 1920s.
She graduated from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon with a major in sociology and organ; it was in Iowa that she met her future husband of 68 years and had the first of her five children.
The family moved to New England in 1935 in a Model T coupe; Mr. Allyn taught business in Rutland, Vt., East Greenwich, R.I., and Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H., until he retired in 1970. Mr. and Mrs. Allyn relocated to Charleston, R.I., where they were members of the Church of the Holy Spirit and the local historical society. They moved to Farmington, Maine, in 1993.
Mrs. Allyn was always actively involved in innumerable church, community, and school-related activities. She and her husband were members of the New London Historical Society. She played the organ for many years at New London's First Baptist Church and St. Andrews Chapel.
She was most recently a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Wilton, after being an active participant in Farmington's Old South Congregational Church and the Outreach Committee since 1993. She was an avid painter and craftswoman and also had a knack for locating the perfect gift at flea markets and yard sales. She kept a fascinating notebook containing a synopsis of every book she had ever read.
Following Mr. Allyn's retirement, the couple was able to travel completely around the world in one trip; they were also able to make several additional trips that introduced them to the Gaspe Peninsula, Puerto Rico, South America, and Alaska, among other places. They enjoyed a month-long tour of China and Taiwan, visiting Mrs. Allyn's birthplace in Foochow. They also enjoyed regular road trips around the state of Maine.
During her 80s, Mrs. Allyn spent much of her time compiling scrapbooks of articles, memorabilia, and photos from their journeys; she also enjoyed making presentations about her years in China, including explanations of the foot-binding of women, a custom which her mother had spent much of her time trying to eradicate.
Mrs. Allyn's children are: Jerome Allyn and his wife Frances Warner of Colchester, Vt., Karyl Condit and her husband Roge of Farmington, Dennis Allyn and his wife Sine Dodge of Rochester, Vt., Kent Allyn of Kittery and Lynn Allyn Young of Chicago, Ill.
A memorial service will be held for Mrs. Allyn at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, High Street, Wilton. Arrangements are under the direction of Western Mountains Cremation & Funeral Service, Farmington.
Should friends so desire donations may be made in Mrs. Allyn's memory to The Accessibility Fund, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 249, Farmington ME 04938.
