Margery A. Goodrich
STEEP FALLS — Margery A. Goodrich, 66, of Acres of Wildwile Campground and formerly of Embden, died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at a Portland hospital.
She was born in Portland, a daughter of Ira E. and Edith (Cook) Durgin, and graduated from Scarborough High School in 1951.
She and her husband were full-time recreational vehicle enthusiasts, summering in Steep Falls and, in winter, traveling to Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. She was a homemaker.
Margery's pastimes included collecting dolls, going to flea markets and yard sales, and playing bingo.
She greatly enjoyed her family and friends.
A son, Douglas L. Goodrich, died in 1976.
Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Douglas A. Goodrich, of Steep Falls; a son, Scott A Goodrich, of Lewiston; two daughters, Diane L. Riley, of Lono, Ark., and Tammy L. Richardson, of Canton; two brothers, Kenneth Durgin and Alan Durgin, both of Scarborough; three sisters, Louise Durgin, of Scarborough, Nancy Blaisdell, of South Portland, and Janice Purington, of Buckland, Mass.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Dolby & Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, with the Rev. John Kozsey officiating. Interment will be made at the family lot in Bingham.
Eugene F. Meader
SKOWHEGAN — Eugene F. Meader, 65, of Skowhegan, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, on Jackson Pond Road in Concord.
He was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Skowhegan, son of Willard and Amber (Easler) Meader, and attended Skowhegan schools.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian (Wilds) Meader, of Skowhegan; two daughters, Sara Cates and husband, Michael, and Michele McKechnie, all of Skowhegan; two sisters, Gail Davis and Linda Mathieu, both of Skowhegan; four grandchildren, Autumn, Alex, Aaron and Nicholas; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Gary Meader.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
John H. Ward
HARPSWELL — John H. Ward, 63, of 44 Brickyard Cove Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, as the result of an automobile and logging-truck accident in Kokadjo.
He was born Aug. 30, 1936, in Madison, son of Marcelle and Catherine (Welch) Ward, and graduated from Madison High School, Bowdoin College (Brunswick), class of 1959; received his master's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., and pursued his doctorate in optical physics at Boston University.
During his professional career, he was employed at Space Optics, Optical Corporation of America, retiring from OCA in 1996. He was published in many professional journals and taught in the graduate program at Boston University. He lived in Chelmsford, Mass., during his professional career.
He married Mary O'Neil Fines in 1977 in Chelmsford. They began building their home in Harpswell in the late 1980s and summered there until retiring in 1996.
Following his retirement, he pursued his love of boat building, canoeing and kayaking. He became a boat builder and designer. He was a winner four times of the American Canoe Association National Sailing Competition. He was the editor of the Maine Masters News Letter and treasurer of Harpswell Island Road Association.
Surviving are his wife of Harpswell and his mother of Farmington; four sons, John H. Ward Jr., of Brockton, Mass., Michael Fines, of West Greenwich, R.I., Robert Fines, of Morgantown, W.Va., and Bill Fines, of Georgetown; four daughters, Bre Ginty, of Hinsdale, N.H., Jeanne Keimig, of Chelmsford, Mass., Laurie Fines, of Providence, R.I., and Mary Fines, of Cooperstown, N.Y.; two brothers, Robert Ward, of Madison, and Alan Ward, of Mansfield Hollow, Conn.; and 15 grandchildren.
Burial will be made at Cranberry Horn Cemetery
in Harpswell.

Rita Whitlock
BELFAST — Rita Whitlock, 77, died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, at Tall Pines Nursing Home in Belfast.
She was born Dec. 21, 1922, in Anson, daughter of Frank and Edith (King) Core, and attended Embden schools.
Rita was employed at North Anson Reel and retired from Norrwock Shoe Co. in 1984.
She married Freeman Whitlock on July 4, 1943. He died in 1967.
Survivors include a daughter, Cecelia Paul and husband, Raymond, of North Anson; two sons, Stanley Whitlock, of Arizona, and Edward Whitlock and wife, Lucille, of Belfast; three sisters, Marguerite Moran, of Augusta, Catherine Gordon, of Madison, and Edith Harriman, of Colorado; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are by Rackliffe Funeral Home of Belfast.
Dorothy Adickes
SKOWHEGAN — Dorothy Adickes, of Skowhegan, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at home in Skowhegan as she wished, having been lovingly cared for by her husband, Ernie, throughout her prolonged illness.
She was born in High Bridge, N.J., daughter of Louis Garfield Wyckoff and Delia Dufford Beam Wyckoff, and attended school in High Bridge. She married Ernest N. Adickes on March 5, 1944.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Ernest Jr., of Humble, Texas, Edward and his wife, Eileen, of Macedonia, Iowa, and Louis and his wife, Marie, of Bound Brook, N.J.; four grandchildren, David, Becky, Jason and Jennifer.
She loved her role as a homemaker and mother. She drove a school bus and taught Sunday school in New Jersey, then when she came to Maine, she worked for Senior Spectrum and was a board member of the Area Agency on Aging.
She composed a book for the grandchildren to ensure that they know who she and Ernie were and familiarize them with their grandparents' personal histories.

John A. Fernald
WATERVILLE — John A. Fernald, 52, of Waterville, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his Sebec camp.
He was born May 12, 1948, in Brooks, son of John H. and Beulah (Raynard) Fernald, attended Fairfield schools, and graduated from Waterville Senior High School, class of 1966.
He was manager of building supplies for Ware-Butler Inc. in Waterville for 33 years.
He was a member of Elks Lodge 905 in Waterville and past MSA director for the state of Maine.
He was predeceased by his father, a brother, George Fernald Sr.; a sister, Mary Hillman; and his uncle, David Fernald.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Fernald, of Waterville; his mother, Beulah Fernald, of Waterville; a son, Jay A. Fernald, of Waterville; a daughter, Beth E. Pelotte, and her husband, William E. Sr., of Benton; three grandsons, William Jr., Devyn and Dylan Pelotte, all of Benton; a brother, David Fernald and his wife, Cay, of Burnham; a sister, Johnna Fernald, of Oakland; his mother-in-law, Jean Dow, of Waterville; a brother-in-law, Darrell Dow and his wife, Kathy; three sisters-in-law, Linda Jerolmon and her husband, Dick, of North Vassalboro, Ann Beebe and her husband, Irving, of Newington, N.H., and Donna St. Peter and her husband, Jeff, of Norridgewock; close nephews, George Fernald Jr. and David Fernald III; several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Elks Lodge 905 service, Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Francis Merritt officiating. Burial will follow at Rogers Cemetery, Troy.
Noah Gannon
LEWISTON — Baby boy Noah Matthew Gannon died at birth, Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston.
He was the son of John Patrick and Julie Lynn (Vincent) Gannon, of Royal Avenue, Rumford.
Survivors include his parents of Rumford; maternal grandparents, William and DeAnn Vincent, of Windham; paternal grandparents, Mrs. Barbara Zook, of Montrose, Colo., and Michael Gannon, of Maple Valley, Wash.; paternal great-grandparents, Roy and Meredith Vashon, of Benton, and Wayne and Alice Gannon of Kent, Wash.
At family request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.
James H. Heckerd
SIDNEY — James Hyle Heckerd, 66, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his Pond Road home in Sidney.
He was born April 24, 1934, in Milford, Conn., son of Jack Hutchinson and Elizabeth Miller (Hogeland) Heckerd.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and then was employed by Sears, Roebuck & Co. and was a member of the Augusta police force.
He then was employed 22 years by the Maine Department of Transportation, retiring in 1990.
He was a former member of Ancient, Free & Accepted Masons, Bethlehem Lodge, and Kora Karts.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Vera (Leighton) Heckerd, of Sidney; two sons, Jay Heckerd, of Camden, and Lee Heckerd, of Tarpon, Fla.; two daughters, Van Laliberte, of Union, and Jeanne Krechko, of Connecticut; two sisters, Elizabeth Hatch, of Rolla, Mo., and Jacquline Kovacsics, of Beaufort, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Resthaven Cemetery, Windsor, with the Rev. Michelle Grube officiating.

Helen M. Waldeck
DALLAS PLANTATION —Helen M. (Trumble) Waldeck, 84, of Dallas Plantation, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at home following a long illness.
She was born March 12, 1916, in East Greenwich, R.I., daughter of William and Mary Trumble, and attended Rhode Island schools.
She made her home in Dallas Plantation since moving from Rhode Island in 1968. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and playing the piano.
Surviving are two sons, James H., of Rangeley, and George W., of North New Portland; two daughters, Helen E. Southland, of Palm Bay, Fla., and Mary E. Ouellette, of Alna; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, George H. Waldeck.
At Helen's request, there will be no visitation hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Phillips.
Stephen C. Watrous
PALMYRA — Stephen C. "Stevie" Watrous, 55, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Palmyra.
He was born Dec. 25, 1944, in Ledyard, Conn., a son of Palmer and Alice (McDougal) Watrous.
Stephen moved in 1980 to Maine, where he established a Raymond Road saw mill, which he ran with his son. He enjoyed
hunting
, fishing, four-wheeling and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon L. (Nortrup) Watrous, of Palmyra; a son, Joseph E. Watrous and his wife, Evelyne, of Hartland; a daughter, Susanne L. Spencer, of Palmyra; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Stephanie Watrous, of Pittsfield, Matthew and Megan Spencer, of Palmyra; a brother, Palmer Watrous, of Connecticut; four sisters, Delight Allen, of Texas, Hope Bowman, of California, Linda Dobbert, of Connecticut, and Becky Perrone, of Louisiana; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends may call from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.
At his request, there will be no public funeral service. Donations may be given to a charity of one's choice.
