Olive M. Loomis

STARKS — Olive Mary (Crane) Loomis, 89, died peacefully in her sleep, Monday, June 12, 2000, at her Starks home.

She was born April 7, 1911, in Mansfield, Conn., daughter of Clarence G. and Lulu A. (Blakely) Crane, and attended Mansfield Center and Willimantic schools in Connecticut.

She was an early career woman and worked independently from age 18. She was employed as a buyer and comparison shopper for a well-known clothing store in Connecticut and for insurance companies.

She took great pride in the reputation that she had acquired as a valued employee. While she did not like to reminisce, she did tell many of her Maine neighbors that her employer in Connecticut had tried hard to convince her to stay and not move to Maine.

She was the devoted wife of Lester G. Loomis. He died in 1985. They were married Oct. 17, 1931, in New York City at the Little Church Around the Corner. This chapel was known worldwide at the time as a favorite wedding spot, and Olive always enjoyed telling visitors about her wedding, her gown and that special and elegant day.

She moved to Maine about 20 years ago with her husband, where they had a new home built and raised goats, geese and cattle. She adored her animals and had many cats over her lifetime. Her most beloved cat, the "Gray Cat" lived to the unbelievable age of 23.

She left an indelible impression on all who knew her during her years in Maine because of her forthrightness and honesty. She will be missed deeply by her special friend, Earl R. Sterry, and her most recent caregivers, Carolyn Sours and Carolee Hand. She leaves many dear friends including Beulah Hebert, Norman and Linda Ellis, Gary Athenian and Earl's girlfriend, Carol Coles.

In accordance with Mrs. Loomis' wishes, there will be no service or visiting hours. She will be interred beside her husband in the Old Willimantic Cemetery in Windham, Conn. Arrangements are by Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison; www.legacy.com.

Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to East Parish Housing Ministry, Starks ME 04911.
