Koharig 'Kay' Christie

1923-2002

DOVER, N.H. — Koharig "Kay" Christie, 79, of 167 Henry Law Ave., died at home Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002.

She was the mother of John Christie of Winthrop, president of Central Maine Newspapers.

She was born Jan. 10, 1923 in Dover and was a lifelong resident of that community. She was a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and was employed for 38 years at the General Electric Co. in Somersworth, N.H., retiring in 1986.

In addition to her son, she is survived by a daughter-in-law, Janet Christie, also of Winthrop, and by a grandson, Nicholas Christie of Winthrop, a senior at Bates College in Lewiston; and by a brother and two sisters. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas, and by a son and two brothers.

Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dover Point.

Jane Ward Burns Hellegers

2002

WHITEFIELD — Jane Ward Burns Hellegers died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident. She was 81.

Born in Randolph, Jane grew up in Gardiner, the daughter of Charlotte and Henry Ward. She attended Gardiner schools and graduated as salutatorian of her high school class. She was also a graduate of the Kennebec School of Commerce.

Her organizational and social skills allowed her to work in many capacities. During the late 1940s, Jane served on the staff of Governor Horace Hildreth, was appointed to the Legal Affairs Committee and then moved on to the Secretary of State's Office.

Her many loves included drama and public speaking, which she obtained from her acting experiences with the Augusta Players. Later, she used these gifts to teach speech and elocution to many local children. Her love of literature led her to become active in the Whitefield School Library during its early years. She touched the lives of many Whitefield School students.

She was very active with the Whitefield Historical Society as an archivist and spent many hours sorting and cataloguing its large collection.

She was a member of the St. Denis Catholic community since moving to Whitefield in 1956. Over her 56 years at St. Denis, she served on several committees, including the Altar Society, the parish council and the Irish Picnic. She had been a Eucharistic minister, a lector and a member of the cemetery committee and the grieving committe. She loved her church family and her faith.

She will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her quick wit and her dedication to her children and grandchildren.

Jane will be deeply missed by her two sons, John Burns and his wife, Martha, of Whitefield, and Daniel Burns and his wife, Dolly, of Whitefield; a daughter, Mary Hellegers Clark and her husband, Gary, of Jefferson; six grandchildren, Courtney and Danielle Burns, Nathan and Hannah Burns, and Rebecca and Tyler Clark; a brother, Clayton H. Ward of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and all of her dear and close friends.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Paul H. Burns and Peter J. Hellegers; and a sister, Ann D. Ward.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Denis Catholic Church in Whitefield, with the Rev. Donald Daigle, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jane Hellegers Memorial Fund, to be dedicated to the Whitefield School library, c/o Daniel Burns, 52 Jefferson Road, Whitefield 04353.

Robert J. Nelson

1927-2002

WINTHROP — Robert J. Nelson, 75, of Winthrop, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at a Lewiston hospital.

He was born April 29, 1927, the son of Albert and Christina (McGah) Nelson.

Robert worked for the Maine Department of Transportation for more than 20 years before retiring. He was a past member of the Alfred W. Maxwell American Legion Post 40. He enjoyed reading and studying local Winthrop history.

In addition to his parents, Robert was predeceased by his wife, Lois Jane Nelson.

He is survived by his children, Larz Rodney Nelson of Winthrop, and Jane C. Nelson of Hulls Cove; two grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; and a daughter-in-law, Patrice E. Pannier.

The service will be private.

Arrangements are private and in the care of Cremation Services of Maine, Belfast.

Mary Elizabeth Robinson

1931-2002

AUGUSTA — Mary Elizabeth Robinson, 71, of Dusty Lane, formerly of East Moriches, Long Island, N.Y., died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center at Gray Birch following a long illness.

She was born in Southampton, Long Island, N.Y., June 11, 1931, the daughter of Walter F. and Margaret S. (Smith) Robinson.

Mrs. Robinson was a graduate of Center Moriches, N.Y. High School in 1947 and Brooklyn College in New York in 1958.

She had been employed by Mid Maine Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville, for more than 25 years and had previously worked at the Augusta General Hospital.

Mrs. Robinson was predeceased by her father, Walter F. Robinson Sr.; a brother, Frank H. Robinson; and a nephew, Gregory R. Baker.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret S. (Smith) Robinson of Long Island; a brother, Walter F. Robinson Jr. and his wife, Diana, of Hector, N.Y.; a sister, Elaine M. Baker of Augusta; a sister-in-law, Shirley Robinson of Bremerton, Wash.; six nephews, John W. Baker and his wife, Tammy, of New Sharon, William A. Baker and his companion, Brenda Rowe, of Augusta, Scott F. Baker of Augusta, James Robinson of Hector, Geoffrey A. Robinson and his wife, Erica, of Seattle, Wash., and Dale Robinson and his wife, Helen, of Bremerton, Wash.; two nieces, Karin E. Boutin and her husband, Michael, of Augusta and Glenda Robinson Bianco of California; and several cousins, great-nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the First Church of the Nazarene, Nazarene Drive, Augusta.

A committal service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17 at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Center Moriches.

Marilyn A. Shorey

1946-2002

OCALA, Fla. — Marilyn A. Shorey, 56, of Ocala, died Sept. 27, 2002, at Ocala Regional Medical Center in Ocala.

She was born in Augusta, Maine, Sept. 3, 1946. She moved to Ocala eight months ago.

She had been employed at Carleton Woolen Mill in Winthrop, Maine, for 25 years. She graduated from Mid-State Business College and was employed as a medical transcriptionist for Dr. Karl Colbath.

She loved crafts, woodworking, bingo and traveling.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Bertie F. Shorey, of Ocala; two sons, Brian Shorey and his wife, Mandy, of Augusta, and Scott Shorey of South China, Maine; two sisters, Patricia Richards of Vassalboro, Maine, and Beverly Wyman of Elizabeth, Colo.; two grandchildren, Brandon and Emily; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in the chapel at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

J. Robert A. Dugal Jr.

1942-2003

WINTHROP — J. Robert A. Dugal Jr., 60, of Carlton Pond Road, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Maine Medical Center, Portland.

Mr. Dugal was born in Waterville on April 19, 1942, the son of J.R. Ayre Dugal Sr. and Frances Olive (Veilleux) Dugal. Mr. Dugal was a graduate of Winslow High School in 1960 and Southern Maine Technical School in 1962. He retired after 40 years of service for the Maine Department of Transportation as a technician/inspector.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Winthrop; a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War as a Seabee; a member of MacCrillis-Rousseau Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Winslow; Alfred Maxwell Post, American Legion, of Winthrop; Father McGowan Council, Knights of Columbus; Abnaki Assembly 346 4th Degree Knights of Columbus; and the Maine State Employees Association, for which he was a shop steward and a member of the board of directors.

Mr. Dugal enjoyed spending time with his family and taking his dogs for a ride on his John Deere tractor. He also enjoyed working with food, computers, flower gardening and rock walls, and was very generous with his time and resources.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Jane (Pelletier) Dugal of Winthrop; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Dugal of Augusta; a son, John-Paul R. Dugal and his wife Kimberly of Winthrop; four brothers, Daniel Dugal and his wife Pat of Illinois, Gerald Dugal and his wife Sandra of Durham, Bernard Dugal and his significant other Janet of Thorndike and Conrad Dugal and his wife Lynn of Augusta; three sisters, Christine Wendler and her husband Chuck of Iowa, Pauline Curry and her husband Rick of Old Orchard Beach and Jeannine Robinson and her husband John of Waterboro; a special uncle and aunt and godparents, Benedict and Marie Perry of Vassalboro; and several other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Officers and members of Abnaki Assembly 346 are to meet in full regalia at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home to prepare for the posting of the guard, Ritual of the Dead and presentation of the memorial chalice. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday morning, April 12, from St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Winthrop. Burial will be in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Paul B. King

1922-2003

OAKLAND — Paul B. King, 80, of Oakland died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.

He was born June 7, 1922, in Rome, son of John and Jessie (Blaisdell) King.

He served in World War II with Company M, 242nd Infantry Regiment, as a heavy mortar crewman and military policeman in the European Theater.

After the war, he worked at King Axe and Tool, Diamond International Corp. and was self-employed in the excavation business.

In 1941, he married Jean Violette; she passed away in 1997.

Survivors include daughter Cindy Spurr of Florida; son Paul E. King of Oakland; brother Bud King of Oakland; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Father Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial donations to the Maine Veterans Homes, RR7 Box 901, 310 Cony Road, Augusta 04330.

Beaudoin service

AUGUSTA — A concelebrated Mass of Christian burial for Rene Beaudoin, who died April 4, 2003, was offered Thursday morning at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church with pastor the Rev. Michael Gendreau officiating.

He was assisted by the Rev. Arthur Pare, S.J., of St. Pius 10th Catholic Church, Portland. Also assisting was Brother Augustine Cote, O.M.I., director of Foreign Office for the Order of Mary Immaculate in Lowell, Mass.

Organist was David Stewart and soloist was Arthur Pare.

Altar servers were Jake Lachance and William Ellis II.

The First Reading was given by a daughter, Jeanne Potelle, and the Second Reading was given by another daughter, Maria Trow. The eulogy was given by daughter Claire Shepherd. Mr. Beaudoin's daughter, Sister Diane Beaudoin, was the Eucharistic Minister. Offertory gifts were presented by grandchildren Alex and Jacob Potelle, along with Shari and Kate Trow.

Representatives attended from St. Mary's Parish, St. Augustine Parish, St. Augustine School, Sisters of Charity, Kennebec Savings Bank, St. Andrew's Men's Club, Calumet Club and MaineGeneral Medical Center.

Pallbearers were David Shepherd, John Potelle, Dennis Alison, Richard Alison, Travis Lyon and Tim Merchant.

Committal prayers were offered by Rev. Gendreau in the Rev. Leonard Leclair Memorial Chapel.

The American flag was folded by members of the U.S. Army from Fort Drum, N.Y., and was presented to Mr. Beaudoin's daughter, Claire Shepherd. Burial followed in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

Arrangements were by Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
