Nelson Alphonse Jacques
ROCKLAND — Nelson Alphonse Jacques, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Augusta, May 25, 1914, he was the son of Omar and Sephora Marie Poulin Jacques.
He attended parochial and public schools in Augusta.
In 1957, he moved to Rockland with his wife and sons. He owned and operated the Oasis Hotel there until 1979, and also owned several apartment buildings, remaining active as a landlord until his death.
An avid rabbit and deer
hunter, Mr. Jacques was believed to be the first member of the Biggest Bucks in Maine Club, after downing a 200-pound, 8-point buck the first morning of
hunting season in October 1949. He ultimately earned four Biggest Buck patches. He took great delight in sharing his many
hunting adventures in detailed stories with family and friends. He also enjoyed teaching his sons and grandsons the
hunting skills he had learned over the years, and later, to his delight, enjoyed hearing about their
hunting experiences.
Devoted to his family, he attended many sporting events in which his son and grandsons participated.
Mr. Jacques was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Eleanor M. Jacques; two brothers, Florian and Clement; one niece, Jacquie Jacques Lemieux; and several aunts, uncles and cousins, of Canada.
He is survived by two sons, John N. Jacques, and his wife, Janie of Thomaston, and Dana Cunningham, and his companion, Nancy Cloutier, of Rockland; two grandsons, Christopher N. Jacques, and his fiancee, Tara Miller, of South Dakota, and Daniel J. Jacques, of Owls Head; one cousin, Joseph "J.R." Poulin, of Augusta; and longtime friends, Carroll Cole, and his family, of Rockland.
There will be no visiting hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 150 Broadway, Rockland, with Rev. Mark Reinhardt officiating. A reception will follow, at the John Jacques residence, 48 Upper Thomaston St., Thomaston. Spring interment will be in Achorn Cemetery, Rockland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 150 Broadway, Rockland.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
Esther F. Jordan
WEST GARDINER — Esther F. Jordan, 98, the fifth member of her family to be awarded West Gardiner's Boston Post Cane as the town's oldest resident, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in West Gardiner, April 15, 1902, the daughter of Lewis and Neva (Goodwin) Fuller.
She was educated in West Gardiner schools.
As a young woman, she moved to South Portland, where she lived for several years before returning to West Gardiner.
She was an avid reader, until her eyesight failed her. She then used "talking books" through Lithgow Library in Augusta.
On her 97th birthday, she was presented the Boston Post Cane.
She was predeceased by a son, Benjamin Jordan, in 2000.
Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie L. Werner, and Margaret E. Nelson, both of South Portland; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held in the spring, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Portland.
Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
Romayne M. Anderson
AUGUSTA — Romayne M. Anderson, 72, of Sherbrook Street, Augusta, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.
She was born in Clarks Summit, Pa., July 9, 1928, the daughter of Edward and Margaret Wright McHale, and attended school there.
Her parents; her stepfather, Albert O'Brien; and brother, Daniel M. McHale, predeceased her.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Paul Anderson, of Augusta; her daughter, Suzanne, and her husband, Robert Hawkins, and their children, Tyler and Todd, all of Augusta; her son, Paul Anderson Jr., of Belfast; sisters, Elizabeth Mears, Virginia Brown, and Frances Shepherd, all of Clarks Summit; brother, Edward McHale, of Clarks Summit; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no visiting hours or funeral service. A committal service for immediate family, will be held in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Building Fund, St. Andrew's Street, Augusta 04330, or a charity of choice.
Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
Terry D. Lloyd
HALLOWELL — Terry D. Lloyd, 53, of Middle Street, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Maine Medical Center, Portland.
He was born in Augusta, Jan. 22, 1948, the son of Norman C. and June D. (Souviney) Lloyd.
He graduated from Cony High School.
Mr. Lloyd attended Thomas College for a time, and received an associate's degree in business administration from the University of Maine at Augusta.
He was an Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Lloyd had been employed by the Veterans Administration Medical and Regional Office Center for 21 years, previously had worked for Jerry Brook Lanes, in Augusta, and was an Army clerk as a civilian.
He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was also a member of the American Bowling Congress Association, and was an avid bowler and golfer. He bowled in the Friday night Invitational Classic and the Tuesday night Men's Merchants League at Interstate Bowling, Augusta. On April 21, 1998, he bowled a perfect 300, and scored his highest series, a 766, Nov. 21, 2000.
Mr. Lloyd is survived by his brother, Norman "Jim" Lloyd, and his wife, Rita, of Augusta; several aunts; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends may visit 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A committal service will be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Fr. Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
H. Estelle Buzzell
PITTSTON — H. Estelle Buzzell, 92, who formerly lived with her daughter, Thelma, of Farmingdale, and most recently of Walters Boarding Home, Hallowell, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta.
She was born in Augusta, March 1, 1908, the daughter of Orrin Leslie and Lelia Mae Jackson Jones.
A graduate Cony High School, class of 1927, and Gates Business School, class of 1928, she was employed for the state insurance department, and Sheldon Street School cafeteria, Farmingdale.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Harley Albert Buzzell, Jan. 2, 1997, and a grandson, Peter John Bonenfant, March 28, 1954.
She is survived by two daughters, Thelma Bonenfant and Elaine Veniot, both of Farmingdale; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held in the spring, at her family lot in Chadwick Hill Cemetery, South China.
Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
Picard service
AUGUSTA — Mass of Christian burial for Geraldine "Gerry" Picard, who died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, was celebrated Monday morning, Feb. 5, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Seavey, pastor, officiating.
Altar servers were Robert Paradis and Juan Guzman. Organist was David Stewart, and soloist was Arthur Pare.
The first reading was given by Penny Lagasse, the second reading was given by Geneva Perkins, and the Prayer of the Faithful was given by Philip Gingrow. Taking part in the offertory procession were sons, Wayne Picard, Ronald Picard and Robert Picard.
There were representatives from St. Andrew's Parish, Lakewood Manor, Augusta School Department, Augusta Police Department, including the crossing guards, North Group Commercial Loan Department, Gardiner Singles Club and American Legion.
Personal remarks were shared by grandchildren, Tricia Putnam, Chris Picard and Randy Picard.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Randy Picard, Ryan Picard, Robby Picard, Chris Picard, Jason Picard, along with and Dan Lagasse.
Committal prayers were offered by Rev. Seavey, in the Fr. Leonard LeClair Memorial Chapel.
Burial followed, in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
Harry William McPherson
HALLOWELL — Harry William McPherson, 76, of Hallowell, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Augusta.
He was the son of Harold L. and Alice G. (Cole) McPherson, and was a 1947 graduate of Hall-Dale High School.
Mr. McPherson enlisted in the Marine Corps Feb. 25, 1943, and served four years during World War II. He spent 26 months in the South Pacific participating in the capture and defense of Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, September 1943 to March 1944. In April 1945, he participated in the capture and defense of Okinawa, Rynkyer Islands. He was issued the honorable service lapel button and Presidential Unit citation with two battle stars.
For many years, he was employed by School Administrative District 16.
Harry will be lovingly remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. Many will remember Harry for his generosity and spirit and his love of the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cynthia; 11 children, Diane McPherson, of Ithaca, N.Y., Harold McPherson, and his wife, Regina, of Hancock, N.H., Scott McPherson, and his wife, Sharon, of Hallowell, William McPherson, and his wife, Lana, of Mount Vernon, Jennifer Dalbeck, and her husband, Jim, of Farmingdale, Ginger McPherson, of Brookline, Mass., Peter McPherson, and his wife, Gayle, of Hallowell, Andrew McPherson, and his wife, Cindy, of Hallowell, Alan McPherson, and his wife, Carla, of Fayette, Heather Pelletier, and her husband, Mike, of Skowhegan, and Kathleen Fairfield, and her husband, Wes, of Brookline; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Surviving brothers and sisters are Ruth Bradley, and her husband, Bill, of Hallowell, twin sister, Marjorie Jacobs, of Mount Vernon, Mary Cunnion, and her husband, Jim, of Hallowell, Ernie McPherson, and his wife, Joan, of Hallowell, Eleanor Trask, and her husband, Robert, of Hallowell, John McPherson, and his wife, Patty, of Hallowell, Alice Perry, and her husband, Eric, of Hallowell, and Linda McPherson, of Hallowell; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Old South Congregational Church, Second Street, Hallowell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to American Legion Goodrich-Caldwell Post 6, 124 Second St., P.O. Box 66, Hallowell 04347.

George H. McArthur
FARMINGDALE — George H. McArthur, 75, formerly of Farmingdale, a resident at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Long Term Care at Graybirch for the past several months, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Augusta, following a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Sidney, Dec. 8, 1925, the son of Walter and Helen (Watton) McArthur.
George was a veteran of the Navy, serving on the USS Wasp as a seaman 1/c from 1943 to 1946, and was a member of American Legion Post 2.
He later worked for Veterans Administration Medical and Regional Office Center at Togus, Harriman and Black, Merrill Transportation and Tilcon.
In his retirement, he became "The Furniture Doc." The joy he had refinishing furniture made him a true craftsman. The greatest joys of his life were spending time with his family, trips to Popham Beach, making candy, picking strawberries and trips to Windsor Fair.
He was a member of, and enjoyed going to, Run For Your Life, in Manchester.
George is survived by two brothers, Eugene and Harold; two sisters, Elsie and Jane; seven daughters, Patricia Welsh and Bill Force, of Augusta, Gail and George Leavitt, of Augusta, Diane Boucher and Patrick Cayse, of Gardiner, Barbara and Jeff Gagnon, of Sidney, Susan and Craig Moulton, of Pittston, Beth Murphy, of Hampden, and Tim Murphy, of Augusta, and Sherry McArthur, of Sidney; his ex-wife and friend, Lorraine Murphy, of Hallowell; grandchildren, Jeff and Nancy Crockett, Julie and Scott Peacock, Rebecca Welsh, Rob Dennis, Melissa and Matt Weston, Lori Boucher, Felicia McArthur, Christopher McArthur, Alex Cayse and Jodi Ximiness; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Samantha, Logan, Abigayle, Jeffrey, Emily and Heather.
Visiting hours are 9 a.m. until a 10:30 a.m. funeral service Thursday, April 5, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, with Rev. Nancy Platt officiating.
