Carrie F. Selwood
MACHIASPORT — Carrie Flynn Selwood, 86, of Machiasport, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at a Machias hospital.
She was born in Harrington, July 22, 1913, the daughter of Capt. Carl Borden Flynn and Carrie (Munro) Flynn.
Carrie Louise Flynn graduated from Orono High School and Machias Normal School.
In 1936, she married Arnold Selwood, of Perry.
Her life was filled with raising five children and teaching elementary school in several communities in Washington and Kennebec counties.
In 1968, she earned a bachelor's degree in education from University of Maine at Machias. She retired, in 1974, from the Augusta school system.
Carrie and Arnold retired to Machiasport, where she enjoyed family and friends, old and new.
She was the dearest mother and grandmother, and the most gracious friend. Carrie will be loved and missed by all who knew her.
Carrie was predeceased by her husband, Arnold Lawrence Selwood, on July 22, 1974, and also by two brothers, Carl M. Flynn and Horace F. Flynn, and one sister, Evelyn Hanson.
She is survived by two sons, Peter Selwood, and his wife, Barbara, of Winthrop, and Scott Selwood, and his wife, Jean, of Augusta; three daughters, Suzanne Sousa, and her husband, Albert, of Groton, Conn., Pamela Drummond, and her husband, Robert, of South China, and Dawn Hachey, and her husband, Paul, of Portland; cousins, Frances Flynn Libby, of Machiasport, and Nancy Lamb, of Rockland; as well as 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at Machiasport Congregational Church, followed immediately by a funeral service., with Bill Holmes officiating. Burial will follow, at Church Hill Cemetery, Machiasport.

Richard F. Esponnette
SOUTH PORTLAND — Richard Francis Esponnette, 60, of Cumberland Road, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at a New Jersey medical center, following a trucking accident.
He was born in Gardiner, a son of Richard S. and Irene Josselyn Esponnette.
Richard attended Rockland schools and was a graduate of Rockland High School.
In 1963, he began working for Sanborn's Motor Express as a truck driver. In the mid-1980s Sanborn's Motor Express was sold to APA Transport, of Scarborough, the company for which he was working.
On Sept. 6, 1968, he married the former Laura Iris L'Heureux.
Mr. Esponnette enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening, and coin collecting.
Richard always helped his neighbors with projects.
He was a member of International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 340, and Maine Professional Drivers Association, and was a former member of Sea Coast
motorcycle
Club of Biddeford.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Esponnette, of South Portland; his mother, of Manchester; a daughter, Tammy Esponnette, of Standish; a son, Dr. Peter Esponnette, of Auburn; three grandchildren, Steven Esponnette, of Standish, and Elizabeth Esponnette and Thomas Esponnette, both of Auburn.
Visiting hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at Conroy-Tully South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 7, at the chapel. Burial will follow, at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
Katharine R. Firth
READFIELD — Rev. Dr. Katharine R. Firth, 55, of Readfield, died accidentally Saturday evening, Sept. 30, 2000, at Georgetown.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Sept. 1, 1945, the daughter of J. Stanford and Katharine (Hay) Kelley, of Portland.
A graduate of Portland High School, Katharine graduated magna cum laude from Bates College, in Lewiston, in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in history. While a student there, she went abroad to Oxford University for her junior year and returned there for her doctorate in history in 1971, under Sir Hugh Trevor-Roper.
Katharine later authored a book, "The Apocalyptic Tradition in Reformation Britain 1530-1645," published by Oxford University Press, based on her thesis. In 1989, she received her degree in seminary studies at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
Katharine, who started her pastoral career at an inner-city parish in Pittsburgh, went on to parishes in Pennsylvania and Connecticut prior to her arrival at Grace Episcopal Church, in Bath. She celebrated the 10th anniversary of her ordination to the priesthood in December 1999.
Katharine was a member of Bath Area Fellowship of Ministers and St. Andrew's Parish, in Readfield.
She is survived by three sons, Charles Firth, of Pittsburgh, Godfrey Firth, of Shanghai, China, and Mark Firth, of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Miranda Patterson, of upstate New York, and Rosamund Firth, of Oregon; one brother, Henry Kelley, of Woburn, Mass.; a sister, Elizabeth Burger, of Woonsocket, R.I.; and a nephew, Stephen Burger.
Visiting hours are 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Grace Episcopal Church, 1100 Washington St., Bath, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. A gathering of family and friends for fellowship will follow, in the parish hall at the church.

John T. Wheeler
AUGUSTA — John T. Wheeler, 78, of Augusta, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a long illness.
He was born March 14, 1922, in Boston, Mass., the son of Francis Thomas and Julia Margaret (Taaffe) Wheeler.
John joined the U.S. Army on Oct. 22, 1942, and was honorably discharged Jan. 11, 1946.
He began working for Westinghouse Electrical Supply Co. on Oct. 29, 1945, and continued there until he retired April 1, 1985, after 40 years of service.
His hobbies included skiing,
hunting
, vegetable and flower gardening, remodeling old houses and traveling to various parts of the country.
John also had his own electrical business and sold appliances. He was a call man for the fire department for 10 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, and four sisters, Dorothy, Julia, Mary and Lillian.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara (Shaw) Wheeler; a son, David T. Wheeler, of Augusta; a brother, Charles Joseph Wheeler, and his wife, Hazel, of South Paris; two sisters, Frances (Wheeler) Trepanier, of Augusta, and Elinor (Wheeler) Williams, of Glen Cove Springs, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta.

James H. Heckerd
SIDNEY — James Hyle Heckerd, 66, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his home on the Pond Road in Sidney.
He was born April 24, 1934, in Milford, Conn., son of Jack Hutchinson and Elizabeth Miller (Hogeland) Heckerd.
He had served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and then was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co. and was a member of the Augusta police force. Mr. Heckerd then was employed by the state Department of Transportation for 22 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a former member of the AF&AM, Bethlehem Lodge and Kora Karts.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Vera (Leighton) Heckerd, of Sidney; two sons, Jay Heckerd, of Camden, and Lee Heckerd, of Tarpon, Fla.; two daughters, Van Laliberte, of Union, and Jeanne Krechko, of Connecticut; two sisters, Elizabeth Hatch, of Rolla, Mo., and Jacquline Kovacsics, of Beaufort, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Resthaven Cemetery, Windsor, with Rev. Michelle Grube officiating.

Godbout service
AUGUSTA — A Mass of Christian burial for Emilienne G. Godbout, who died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, was celebrated Monday morning, Oct. 2, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with Rev. Richard St. Cyr, pastor, officiating.
Altar servers were Julie Brawn and Jeannette Beaudoin. Organist was David Stewart and soloist was Arthur Pare.
The readings were given by a niece, Christine Arbour. Taking part in the offertory procession were Kasey Godbout, Travis Godbout, Amy Godbout, and Taylor Godbout, all great-grandchildren.
There were representatives from the church, N.R.F. Distributors and Augusta Rehabilitation Center.
Pallbearers were Kenneth, David, Bruce, Ricky and Michael Godbout, all grandsons, and a nephew, Andy Gosselin.
Burial was in St. Augustine Cemetery, where Fr. St. Cyr offered committal prayers.
Arrangements were by Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta.
Pauline F. Church
AUGUSTA — Pauline F. Church, 81, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a brief illness.
She was born July 7, 1919, the daughter of Rex and Winifred Church.
For 45 years, she was a legal secretary for Ernest Goodspeed, which evolved into the Goodspeed and O'Donnell law firm.
She was predeceased by her sister, Doris Griffin, and two older brothers, Cony and Ambrose Church.
She is survived by a brother-in-law, Percival Griffin; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Church; and several loving nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A graveside service will be held at a later date.
