Meredith J. Ambrose
1913-2002
WATERVILLE — Meredith J. Ambrose, 89, of Waterville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at a Waterville nursing facility.
He was born July 24, 1913, in Sherman Mills, son of Frank A. and Mattie (Joy) Ambrose. He graduated from Waterville High School, class of 1930. He entered the U.S. Army, March 30, 1944, with the 15th Infantry Division, Seventh Army, and served in the European, Middle and Eastern Theatre before being wounded in action. He was honorably discharged Sept. 29, 1945, with the rank of Private First Class.
In his early years, he managed McLellan Stores and from 1948 to 1977 he was Chief of Prosthetic Service at the Veterans Administration at Togus. He had been retired since 1978 and enjoyed his rural Winslow home. He was an avid gardener.
For over 20 years, he was an active member of the Penny Memorial Baptist Church in Augusta, a 50-year member of the China Lodge No. 45 A.F.&A.M., life member of the Disabled American Veterans, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8835 in Winslow and a member of the Waterville N.A.R.F.E. No. 1872.
He was predeceased by his wife, Glenys S. Ambrose, son, Brian B. Ambrose; his siblings, Lewis, Geraldine and Beatrice.
Survivors include a brother, William Ambrose of Titusville, Fla., and Belgrade, and a sister, Glenda Ambrose of Waterville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visiting hour will be held from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral, Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, with the Rev. Ron Corey officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.
Leona (Libby) Bishop
1934-2002
ORLAND — Leona S. Bishop, 68, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at a Belfast hospital.
She was born May 26, 1934, in Norridgewock, daughter of Oscar R. and Florence P. (Jones) Libby. Leona and her husband Charles moved to Leaches Point Road in Orland in 1957, where they raised their four sons.
She retired from Maine Maritime Academy in Castine as maintenance supervisor.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bucksport.
Lee's greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Charles H. Bishop of Orland; her three sons, Keith A. Bishop and wife Catherine of Clinton, Matthew W. Bishop and wife Melinda of Bucksport, Darren J. Bishop and wife Richelle of Bucksport; brother, William Libby of Norridgewock, and sister, Carol Allian of Madison; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Lee was predeceased by her son, Mark Anthony Bishop in 1975, and three brothers, Ruel, Robert and Larry, and a sister, Peg.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bucksport. Interment will be at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery
in Bucksport. Arrangements are by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.
Jeannette H. Brown
1912-2002
MADISON — Jeannette H. Brown, 90, a lifelong resident of the Madison area, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Cedar Ridge Nursing Care Facility in Skowhegan.
She was born May 29, 1912, in Anson, daughter of Robert A. and Harriet (Barron) Hamilton, and graduated from Madison High School, class of 1929.
She married Robert P. Brown, Jan. 20, 1934, in Madison; he died in 1974.
She was employed as a clerk at Madison Electric Works of Madison for many years. She also enjoyed being a homemaker, knitting, sewing and ceramics.
Survivors include one son, Peter H. Brown of Baja, Calif.; one granddaughter, Deborah E. Horst of Acton, Calif., and one grandson, Robert P. Brown of Santa Barbara, Calif.; three great-grandchildren in Acton; several cousins and loving friends.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Forest Hill Cemetery
in Madison with the Rev. Nathan Richards officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home in Skowhegan. Donations may be made in her name to the Pine Tree Society for Handicapped Children and Adults, PO Box 518, Bath ME 04530.
Mary N. Gerry
1925-2002
DETROIT — Mary N. Gerry, 77, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at her Troy Road residence.
She was born May 17, 1925, at Troy, Ala.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clair, who died Sept. 29, 1992.
Mary assisted her husband on the dairy farm until they stopped farming in 1980. She loved her flower gardens and her cats.
Mary was a member of the Detroit Good Cheer Club.
She is survived by a son, Samuel of Detroit; a daughter, Mary Ellen Hennigan of East Newport; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
There will be no public visitation. A graveside funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Detroit Village Cemetery. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport.
Ernest A. Moody Sr.
1941-2002
BENTON — Ernest Abner Moody Sr., 61, of Benton, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 3, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville, after a long illness. He went peacefully to be with his Lord.
He was born March 6, 1941, in Skowhegan, son of Clarence Edward Moody and Martha (Dodge) Strode, and attended Skowhegan schools then moving to Semore, Conn.
For many years Ernest worked for Martin J. Kelly as a crane operator and supervisor. Later he returned to Maine where he worked for Lucas Tree as a crane operator and supervisor until injury and illness forced him to retire.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister, Vivian Roberson, and sisters-in-law, Ann Moody and Wilma Gordon.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, DeeAnn (Gordon) Moody of Benton; his three devoted sons, Ernest Moody Jr. of Benton, William "Bill" Moody of Benton, Rick Moody and his wife Kerrie of Fairfield; daughter, Roxanne of Waterbury, Conn.; five beautiful grandchildren who called him "Pampie," Jenna and Keaton Moody of Fairfield, Hannah Moody of Waterville, Kealey Bowman of Fairfield; step-granddaughter, Amber Oaks, of Waterville, whom he loved dearly. His children and grandchildren were his world; they were his pride and joy. He leaves a special sister, Helen Brooks of Clinton, and a brother, Forrest Moody of Waterbury, Conn.; sisters-in-law, Joan and husband Chris Harris, Donna Simpson and fiance, Richard Dennis, and Linda Hyde, all of Waterville, Judy, Patty and Elizabeth Gordon, all of Fairfield; brothers-in-law, William Gordon Jr. of Norridgewock, Charles Gordon of Portland, Dale Gordon of Waterville, and Mike Gordon and his wife, Loreen, of Benton; a very special cousin, Leslie Dodge Jr. of Unity; many nieces, nephews and cousins, and many, many friends. He will be missed so much by his family and friends.
Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, with a funeral at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, with the Rev. Frank Gleason officiating. Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery

Debra A. Puopolo
1975-2002
HARTLAND — Debra A. Puopolo, 26, of Hartland, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at her home.
She was born Sept. 6, 1975, in Boston, Mass., daughter of Nicholas Pizzie and Jean Puopolo.
Survivors include her daughter, Brianna Lanarez of Hartland; her mother, Jean Lampron of Hartland; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield with the Rev. Raymond Morency officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery
in Hartland.
Robert J. Belanger
1938-2002
OAKLAND — Robert J. Belanger, 64, of Belgrade Road, died Sunday, Oct. 06, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville.
He was born in Waterville, Feb. 5, 1938, a son of Arthur and Elsie (Cote) Belanger Sr.
Robert had worked as a paper maker for International Paper for many years.
He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Sandra M. (D'Amore) Belanger, who died Dec. 26, 2000.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Corey (Renee) Coombs of Belgrade, Wendi Belanger and her partner, Mike Hutchison, of Waterville, Victoria L. Dow and Cheryl Belanger, both of New Hampshire; two sons, Rob and Bryan Belanger, both of Lee, N.H.; a brother, Arthur Belanger of Waterville; two sisters, Lucille Young of Oakland and Anne Thibodeau of Fairfield; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 112 Silver St., Waterville. Committal prayers and burial will follow at Lewis Cemetery
in Oakland.
Joseph E. Roger Gallant Sr.
1928-2002
WATERVILLE — Joseph E. Roger Gallant Sr., 73, of Butler Court, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Eastside Rehabilitation & Living Center in Bangor. He was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, Dec. 27, 1928, a son of Philorome and Henriette (Daigle) Gallant. He was a high school graduate and had attended college. He had served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
He had been a machinist at Raytheon Manufacturing in Waltham, Mass., for many years. He was a member of the Bourque-Lanigan Post 5 American Legion in Waterville.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Gallant of Lewiston; four sons, Joseph E.R. Gallant Jr. of Massachusetts, David Gallant of New Hampshire, Donald Gallant of Waterville, and Thomas Gallant of Canada; three brothers, Leonard Gallant of California, Leo Paul Gallant of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and Raymond Gallant of Moncton; four sisters, Antoinette Cote of Maine, Mrs. Aurel (Jeanne) Fecteau of Waterville, Theresa Durr of Utica, N.Y., and Mrs. Urbain (Patricia) Savoie of Bathhurst, New Brunswick, Canada; nine grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Sacred Heart Church, 70 Pleasant St., Waterville. Burial will be in the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
John B. Lyons
1922-2002
SMITHFIELD — John B. Lyons, 79, of Smithfield, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Hamden, Conn., the son of Henry F. and Mea (Berry) Lyons, and attended Connecticut schools. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1943 to 1946 serving in World War II. After serving his country, he came home and worked as a mason and machinist, specializing as a tool and die maker until his retirement in 1985.
In 2001, John married Charlene Mayhew in Smithfield. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, and watching sports on television. He coached Little League baseball and Pop-Warner football. He was a member of American Legion Post 192 of Athens and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3198.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Glen Lyons and his wife, Claire, of Georgia, a daughter, Catherine Zelich and her husband, Jim, of Connecticut; four grandchildren, Michele, Kimberly, Sean, and Keith; three stepchildren, Betty Ackett, Richard Hoar, and Robert Hoar; seven step-grandchildren, Sherena, Shauna, Kyle, Trista, Meghan, Jacob and Joshua.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Pauline.
Visitation hours will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 261 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A funeral will follow immediately at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Mount Rest Cemetery

Eva Mary Morrissette
1898
MADISON — Eva Mary Morrissette, 103, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Maplecrest Rehabilitation & Living Center in Madison. She was born Dec. 18, 1898, in St. Honore, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of Sigfroid and Sarah (Pouliot) Morrissette. Her family moved to Madison in 1916, where Eva worked as a weaver at the Madison Woolen Mill until it closed in 1948. Following the closing of the Madison mill, she was employed several years at the Fairfield Woolen Mill.
Eva's career continued as a housekeeper for the family of Waterville attorney Cyril Joly Sr. Following the death of Cyril Sr., she continued as a housekeeper for the family of Cyril Joly Jr., retiring back to her home on Old Point Avenue in Madison at the age of 85. Eva drove a car until she was nearly 100 years old and spent her final years at 234 Madison Ave. in Skowhegan, assisted living at Tissue's Estate in Athens and Maplecrest in Madison.
She was a communicant of St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Madison and a charter member of the Daughters of Isabella.
Her three brothers and eight sisters died previously. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Giberson Funeral Home, 40 Maple St., Madison. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Madison with the Rev. Father Georges Plante officiating.
