BETTY A. PALMER
CORINNA – Betty A. Palmer, 77, died January 2, 2017 at a Bangor hospital surrounded by her family. She was born July 12, 1939 in Littleton, a daughter of Benjamin and Beulah (Rogerson) Flewelling.
Betty married
Robert Palmer on June 12, 1957. She worked on the harvester at Buck’s Potato Farm, Snowflake Canning Company, both in Corinna, and retired as night foreman at the Dexter Shoe Company in 1999. Betty was a founding member (#20) of the Dexter Regional Federal Credit Union and served on the board for a time. After “retiring” she baby sat for Elizabeth Kinney and her special “boys” Payson and Willis Reinhardt, and cleaned homes. She loved flower and vegetable gardening, canning vegetables, making pickles, relishes and jellies, reading and drinking Diet Coke. Betty was always happiest sitting on her porch at Center Pond, in her words, “the most beautiful place in the world”, where she enjoyed her friends and camp neighbors.
She is survived by two daughters, Terri and husband Michael Crosby of Newport, Vicki and husband Mark Easler of Corinna; four sisters, Edna “Teta” and husband Cliff Pottle, Gloria and husband Dick Perkins of Holden, Janet and husband Donald Zimmerman of GA, Frances and husband Vaughn Thibodeau of Winterport; two brothers, David Flewelling of Frankfort, Richard Flewelling and companion Irene Davis of Troy; two granddaughters, Jenna and husband Tyson Grindle, of Medford, NJ, and Kayla Easler and boyfriend Brandon Hopkins of Dixmont; great grandson Wyatt Grindle; 2 sisters-in-law, Gladys Flewelling of Winterport and Ann Flewelling of MS; many nieces and nephews; “adopted” daughter Sue Paige of Corinna; and her dog Willow. She was extremely proud of her daughters, granddaughters and great grandson.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Benjamin “Dude” and Philip Flewelling.
Friends called from 11 AM to 1 PM Saturday, January 7th, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Private graveside committal services will be held in the spring at Morse’s Corner cemetery, Corinna. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. CHRIS “BUB” WALKER
ST. ALBANS – Chris “Bub” Walker, 44, died unexpectedly on Friday, December 23, 2016, at his home in St. Albans.
He was born on August 3, 1972, in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Larry and JoAnn Kimball. He attended the local schools in Hartland and spent most of his life working at the Hartland Tannery, A Cut Above Carpentry in Hartland and Tobin Movers of Peabody, Massachusetts.
Chris recently married
the love of his life and soul mate, Maya. They enjoyed spending all the time that they could together. He was a loving, happy, positive guy who would always say, “Babe, it’s all gonna work out”. He enjoyed carpentry, gardening, grilling, feeding the birds and taking care of his rooster and guinea hens. He was a hard worker and loved to take care of his mother. He will be missed beyond words by his family, friends and co-workers at the Hartland Tannery and A Cut Above Carpentry.
He is survived by his wife, Maya Walker; their daughter, Julie-Anne Cooper; his faithful dogs, Teeny Weeny and Stella; his mother, JoAnn Kimball, all of St. Albans; sisters, Brenda Kimball and boyfriend, Mark Russell, of Pittsfield, Laurie Holmbom and husband, Joshua, of Hartland and their daughter, Jocelyn and Marcia Fuller and husband, Lee, of Hartland and their children, Courtney, Morgan, Hannah, Hunter, Mason and Marlee; sisters-in-law, Bobbi White of Bingham and her daughters, KyLa and Chloe and Betty Foss and boyfriend, Arthur Fletcher of West Athens and her son, Nathaniel; and many special friends whom he considered family.
The family received friends from 2 to 4 PM, Saturday, December 31, 2016, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield.
ERNEST R. GORTEN, JR.
PITTSFIELD – Ernest R. Gorten, Jr., 83, peacefully passed away at Sebasticook Valley Hospital on December 30, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. His family expresses gratitude for the compassionate care that he received at SVH. He was born in Newport, Maine, on May 23, 1933, the son of Ernest R. Gorten, Sr. and Agnes (Brawn) Gorten.
Ernest was a star basketball player who earned the nickname “Goose” prior to his graduation from Newport High School in 1951. He proudly served in the United States Army for two years; he was stationed in South Korea for 16 months.
Ernest married
Maxine Young on July 24, 1955. They had three children, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and five step-great grandchildren. Ernest and Maxine were married
for 61 years and they lived in the same house in Augusta for over 55 years. Ernest worked for Nabisco as a sales representative for over 30 years.
In his retirement Ern enjoyed hunting, open water and ice fishing with his son and son-in-law at his camp on Long Pond in Belgrade as well as in the Greenville area. Ernie loved sports and he was a loyal fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. He never missed his grandsons’ football, hockey and baseball games. He also supported his granddaughters’ musical endeavors by attending their school concerts. Ernest is perhaps best known for his unique sense of humor. He had a quip or a comment for any situation.
He was predeceased by his mother Agnes Brawn Gorten; his father Ernest Robert Gorten, Sr., and his brother Donald Wallace Gorten.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine Gorten, of Pittsfield; his 3 children, Linda Snow and her husband Peter of Pittsfield; Brenda Palmer and her husband Rick of Farmingdale; and Gregory Gorten of Clinton; 4 grandchildren: Sarah Snow and her fiancé Eric Jordan Bailey of Laurel, MD; Hannah Snow and her husband Anson Lee of Exeter, NH; Cory Palmer of Portland and Ian Palmer of Bangor; 2 step-grandchildren, Kyle Snow and his wife Kathy of Ellsworth and Kathryn Snow of Lincolnville and his sister-in-law Barbara Gorten of Newport along with several nieces, nephews, and extended family. He enjoyed weekly visits and excursions with his niece, Sue Emery and her husband Butch. Ernest bravely lived with Parkinson’s disease and for over 10 years he exhibited courage, grace and dignity through his many challenges. He will be greatly missed as a loving son, husband, uncle, father and grandfather.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the First Congregational Church, PO Box, 423, Pittsfield, Maine, in Ernie’s memory.
The family received friends from 5 to 7 PM, Friday, January 6, 2016, at the Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield. A memorial service was held at 2 PM, Saturday, January 7, at the funeral home with Rev. Glenn Nichols officiating. A committal with military honors will be held at 2 PM, May 23, 2017, at the Riverside cemetery, cemetery Road, Newport.
JEANNETTE W. FITTS
PITTSFIELD – Jeannette W. Fitts, 88, born September 8th, 1928, began the second act of God’s plan for her life's journey on December 21st, 2016, passing on peacefully in the company of loved ones.
She was the fourth child of Abel and Georgie Webb and sister to Arlene, Marie, Martelle, Margaret and Bobby. As a typical Central Maine family, they enjoyed a simple and blessed life surrounded by a community of loving family and friends.
Jeannette attended Pittsfield schools, graduating from Maine Central Institute in the class of 1946, where she participated in many athletics and school activities. This past summer she proudly attended her 70th consecutive MCI Alumni Reunion. She furthered her education at Eastern Maine General School of Nursing, learning the caring craft of a Registered Nurse which she would ply for over a half century in a variety of positions.
Jeannette married
her one true love, Gerald R. Fitts, on October 6th, 1950. Together they raised their family and operated a successful local business. As an expert coordinator of gatherings, she enjoyed countless favorite times with family, classmates and friends whether at their cherished camp on Sibley Pond or in the St. Pete, Tampa area during her Florida years. Family and friends were Jeannette’s whole world.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Gerald, and her siblings.
Surviving Jeannette and carrying on her traditions of caring, love and friendships are her two sons, Gary and wife Amy, Kevin and Jeri; her 8 grandchildren, Laura, Hilary, Hunter, Travis, Gavin, Corey, Stephanie and CJ; 15 great-grandchildren; several very special nieces and nephews, along with many extended family members.
Jeannette was always at her best as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, cook and hostess.
A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Avenue, Pittsfield, Maine, officiated by Reverend Scott Jones. Following, all those who wish may attend an informal time of remembrance at the Sebasticook Valley Elks Lodge #2713 on Middle Street in Pittsfield.
Our family wishes, with great appreciation and respect, to thank the individuals who lovingly cared for Jeannette during the last few years, especially the wonderful staff at Ross Manor. There are too many to mention, and we trust that all of you know how very much it has meant to us.
It was Jeannette’s wish that in lieu of flowers any donations be given to the Maine Central Institute Founders Campaign or a special charity of one’s choice.
CASSANDRA LYNN LAWLER
WINTERPORT & UNITY – Cassandra Lawler, 41, died December 31, 2016 at a Bangor hospital. She was born July 24, 1975 in Norwich, CT. She was employed as a CNA, and later, a CRMA at Sanfield Living Center in Hartland. Cassandra was active in the Special Olympics program.
She is survived by her mother, Dorinda and husband Dana Chase of Burnham; maturnal grandfather Dwayne Malcolm of Etna; her fiancé Jeff VanHoy; a brother, Daniel and wife Amanda Riendeau of Corinna; 2 sisters, Skyla and husband Bruce Hewins of Hartland, Hope and husband Eric Whitman of Groton, CT; several special nieces and nephews. Cassandra loved all of her family.
Visitation was held from 2 to 4 PM Thursday, January 5th, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Spring services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
CARLTON W. TASH
HARTLAND – Carlton W. Tash, 82, died, Monday, January 2, 2017, in Bangor.
Carlton was born on January 30, 1934, in Chester, Maine, the son of Charles A. and June A. (Lobley) Tash. He graduated from Oakland High School and proudly served our country in the United States Army in Panama.
Carl was employed for many years as the friendly milkman, delivering to the local communities. He later was employed by Spring Brook Oil Company and delivered oil until he retired. He loved knowing his customers personally and had a knack for remembering their names, addresses and phone numbers. He was very outgoing and felt comfortable starting up a conversation with anyone that he would meet. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He will be forever missed and loved.
He is survived by his children, Jennifer Tash of Georgia and Skip Tash and wife, Molly, of Pittsfield; granddaughter, Savannah; brother, Donald Tash and wife, Lois, of Dedham; and long-time companion, Priscilla Butler and her daughter, Rhonda Southard, both of Hartland; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Charles Tash Jr; and sister, Vivian Pomerleau.
A graveside memorial service will be held in the spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta, with military honors being presented for his service to our country.
STEVEN JOHN RITTER
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Steven John Ritter, 59, passed away unexpectedly on December 29th, 2016 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, ME. Steven was born September 20, 1957 in Jersey City, NJ. He was the son of Steven John Ritter, Jr. and predeceased by his mother Mary Kathleen Perera. Steven worked many years in furniture sales in Florida and became a career aficionado developing many valuable skills and trades. Steven eventually moved to Maine where he would spend the rest of his days with his beloved wife of 27 years (19 married
); Theresa Laythe-Ritter.
Steven is survived by his wife, Theresa and his four children- his daughter Ivonne Laythe, daughter Danielle Dykeman, a son Steve Gagliardi, and his youngest son Blake Ritter.
Steven is loved and survived by four granddaughters and two grandsons. Steven is also survived by his brother Bruce Ritter and his father of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and predeceased by his mother.
Steven will be loved and remembered by 2 nieces and 1 nephew, close friends and extended family. Steven will always be remembered for his quick wit and his everlasting sense of humor - for his undying love for qu’ing on the grill, playing darts and cheering as loud as he could on Football Sundays (Go Pats!)
A benefit dinner will be scheduled for a later date and time.

SUSAN SAUCIER SURETTE
PALMYRA — Susan Saucier Surette, 48, died peacefully on December 25, 2016 at home in Palmyra, attended by her soulmate, Clint Southard, members of her family, and close friends. The strong impressions made by her lively nature, easy laugh, intense enjoyment of life and abiding love for her son Nathan will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Susan was born in Waterville on February 28, 1968 to Edmund E. and Joanne I. (Joler) Saucier, who predeceased her, as the youngest of their ten surviving children. She felt especially close to her parents and enjoyed collecting and cooking her mother’s recipes. She was raised in Waterville and graduated from Waterville High School in 1986. In high school, Susan was active in sports, playing soccer with the kind of skill and fun shown by her six brothers in backyard ice hockey. She had her three older sisters to thank for setting the standard. She, along with her sisters, was also a skilled skater.
After attending classes at Thomas College, Susan worked in the health care field, including a period of time in sales. Her interest in people and ease with conversation made her a natural, successful, saleswoman. Susan was passionate about the outdoors which started from an early age with her father who was a Maine Guide. Her enthusiasm was intensified after being reconnected with her high school sweetheart and soulmate, Clint Southard. She fell in love with camp where she and Clint would spend time shooting, hunting, and relaxing by the fire. It was at camp that Susan harvested her first deer. After applying for many years in the Maine State Moose Lottery she won a tag for the 2016 September hunt. Clint – a Master Maine Guide – was able to arrange the hunt with help from her son, two of her brothers, two of her nephews, and Clint’s son and his wife who all shared her interest in hunting. A clip of the documented hunt “Susan’s Amazing Story and Moose Hunt, 2016” can be found on YouTube. The bull moose kill and her reaction “I did it!” accompanied by her broad, dimpled smile, clearly meant her achievement marked a supreme moment in her life.
Susan is survived by her son Nathan Surette; her companion Clint Southard; her six brothers: Michael Saucier and wife Paula Craighead; Jon Saucier and companion Nancy Poulin; Daniel and Brenda Saucier; James and Jean Saucier; Peter and Lori Saucier; Paul Saucier and companion Cindy Jennings; her three sisters: Cathy and Dirk Kershner; Sandra Bard and companion Andrew Heckler; Patricia and John Bearce; and their families including fifteen nieces and nephews and six grand-nieces and nephews; Clint’s son Nolan and wife Christine Southard; Clint’s daughter Arielle Tuttle and husband Caleb; Clint’s daughter Tasha Howard, and Clint’s brother Todd Southard and wife Darlene.
The family wishes to publically express its deep appreciation to MaineGeneral Hospice Care including the nurses and caregivers who cared so gently for Susan before and during her passing.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, December, 31st at 9 AM at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 112 Silver Street, Waterville, ME. DELMAR J. LEVESQUE
PLYMOUTH — Delmar John Levesque, 83, died December 24, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born April 9, 1933 in Limestone, a son of Loomis and Doris (Martin) Levesque. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed as a machine shop superintendent.
In the early 70’s, he bought land in Plymouth and planted an apple orchard. After moving to Maine Delmar opened the Mildel Apple Farm and sold apples at the Orono and Belfast farmer’s markets starting in 1998. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield, and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was also a member of the Pomological Society.
In addition to his wife Mildred, of nearly 64 years, he is survived by a son Michael, a daughter Darlene Hopkins and fiancé George “Jody” Grant, all of Plymouth; a brother, Maurice and wife Eleanor Levesque of Milford, CT; a sister Dorothy Mitchell of Ansonia, CT; 4 grandchildren, Amy Swanson, Brandon and Cody Hopkins, and Peyton Grant; 2 great grandchildren, Cassidy and Britney Swanson.
A graveside funeral and committal service will be held in the spring at Sawyer cemetery, Plymouth. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. MARVIS LANPHER WOLFARD
CALIFORNIA — Marvis Lanpher Wolfard, of Orange County, California, passed away December 25, 2016. She was born in Palmyra, Maine on May 1, 1940. She was the third child of Selden P. Lanpher and Felta Richardson Lanpher. Growing up in the 40’s on a farm was not easy, with no electricity, telephones, or refrigeration. She was educated in one room schools through eighth grade. She graduated from Newport High School, class of 1958. She went on to live in Connecticut and then moved to the West Coast. She was a 40 year employee of the Bank of the West. Her hobbies included genealogy, sports and quilting. She was an avid quilter, belonging to the Orange County Quilt Guild. She spent many years making children’s quilts for various charities.
She was predeceased by husband Gerald T. Wolfard and daughter Phoebe L. Wolfard. She is survived by her son Clyde Wolfard of California and daughter Nicole Doumerc and husband Paul of California; sister: Natalie Rines of Palmyra; brother: Errol Lanpher and wife Beatrice of Palmyra; four grandchildren: Athena Delgado, Gerald S. Wolfard, Sara Weaver, Erika Weaver and Nolan Doumerc; cousins: Glynnis Fields and Merle Lanpher; niece: Terrie Hersey and her husband Frank and children Karen, Lori, and Jodi; niece: Beth-Ann Rowell and family; nephew: Kenneth Rines and wife Brenda and their family; nephew: Wayne Rines and wife Patty and family; and many great nieces and nephews. She was particularly proud of her great grandson Mason peterson and was known as GG to her four great grandchildren. No funeral services will be held. There will be an interment in the spring at East cemetery, Skowhegan, Maine.
