Justine H. Mencl

Today, sadly, we share with you the peaceful passing of Justine Hoxie Mencl on May 5th, 2013. She truly has always been the love of our lives, the matriarch of our family, and a very special lady to so many. She persevered, but succumbed to lymphoma at the end of a long and courageous battle.
Mom was born August 19, 1928 to Dorothy Gould Hoxie and Albert Hoxie in Norwich, Connecticut. She attended schools in Connecticut. She worked waiting tables at resorts in the summers to pay for college, and graduated from the University of Connecticut in, earning a degree in education. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi and continued to stay in contact with several dear sorority sisters through the years.
Early on she worked for the Connecticut 4-H Program, where she met Robert Mencl. They married in May of 1954, settling in, building a home, raising a family and running a business in Canterbury, Connecticut before moving to Maine in 1972 to begin a new, long career of dairy farming.
First and foremost, she the Best Wife and Mother Ever, petite in stature, but a “Momma Bear” for her children and grandchildren! Always teaching us, even in play, always teaching.
Mom was an accomplished watercolor artist, and enjoyed the art of water color. Her friendship with fellow painters was very special. They looked forward to their sessions in each other’s homes.
A long-time member of the Pittsfield Garden Club, she was always as busy as the bees themselves, deeply involved in the success of the Club’s endeavors. She was an herbalist and a master gardener. Mom was always sharing plants and knowledge, encouraging everyone to enjoy gardening. So many came to her for answers to their gardening questions. Many have “Justine” plants in their gardens.

It is with great appreciation that the family acknowledges all the loving care and attention shown by doctors, nurses and staff at various medical facilities, and especially the staff at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care. The care and tenderness of everyone has helped more than words can convey. Thank you.
Final arrangements will be private for the family, honoring Justine’s personal request. Those wishing to make a memorial gift in her memory may send a donation to the Pittsfield Garden Club, c/o Valerie Varney, 231 River Road, Detroit, ME 04929.
