Edward J. Patten
ST. ALBANS - Edward Joseph Patten, 87, passed on to be with the Lord January 8, 2011 at a Dexter health care facility. He was born November 30, 1923 in St. Albans, second son of Earl and Nellie (May) Patten. He graduated from Hartland Academy where he loved sports, and worked with his father on the family farm. After graduation, he helped build the Greenville airport as a laborer for the state. He married
the former Barbara Martin, also of St. Albans, where they continued living for the rest of their married
life. They raised 5 children on three different farms, the last being the Ralph Hanson farm on Todd’s Corner Road. Ed was also a meat cutter and meat salesman on the road for Hanson and Smith. He was also janitor and bus driver for St. Albans schools. He also worked at the wood mill by Big Indian stream. After “retiring”, he worked at Bud’s Shop and Save in Pittsfield for 20 years. He was a member of St. Albans Union Church. Due to failing health Ed resided at Lizabeth House in Dexter, where he received excellent care, and “family recreation”. Ed’s family would like to thank them for his excellent care.
Ed was predeceased by his wife, Barbara (Martin) in June of 2002; 3 sons, David, Ernest and Eric; a brother Leon Patten; and 2 sisters, Evelyn Corson and Irene Knight.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Beatrice and husband Robert Rosen of Atkinson, NH; Linda Cowan and life partner Wayne Haskell of Garland; grandchildren, Joy and husband Steve Kennedy and great grand-daughter MacKenzie of Medford, NJ, Tamara and husband Jim Leavitt, great granddaughters, Rachel and Savanna Leavitt, all of St. Albans, Mark Patten, Kenneth Patten, Sr. and great grandchildren Kenneth, Jr., Heather and Jennifer Patten, all of Wesley Chapel, FL.
The family would also like to express their gratitude for the love, wonderful care, respect and rehabilitation received in his last days from the staff and volunteers at the Dexter Health Care Facility. He had a smile on his face from the warmth and concern to the end.
There will be no services at this time. A spring committal service will be held at St. Albans Village cemetery. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Newport. Faye B. (Seamans) Parker
CORINNA - Beloved child of God, Faye B. (Seamans) Parker, 86, wife of the late Archie D. Parker, Jr., went to her heavenly home to be with her Abba Father and Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, December 20, 2010.
Faye was born on December 19, 1924 in Corinna, daughter of the late Hollis and Nora (Tozier) Seamans. Growing up, Faye attended Corinna schools, graduated from Corinna Union Academy in 1944, and worked in the beauty shop following her graduation. In 1945, she married
Archie D. Parker, Jr. while he was home on leave from the Army. The two were happily married
for fifty-four years. During that time, Faye worked for Snowflake Canning in Corinna for fifteen years and for Dexter Shoe Company for nineteen years.
Faye was a faithful, Christian wife and mother, prayed and read her Bible daily, and shared her testimony with many. She attended the Pleasant Street Christian Church in Corinna for several decades. She also enjoyed playing the piano and harmonica, cooking, knitting, gardening, and visiting and corresponding with family, friends, and neighbors.
She is survived by her three children, Judy Herrick and husband Carl of Corinna, Donna Peasley and husband Chuck of Dexter, and Daniel D. Parker and wife Lisa of New Bern, NC; four siblings, Alden Seamans and wife Joanne of Avon, CT, Richard Seamans and wife Rita of Dexter, David Seamans and wife Sue of Lee, MA, Jean Mountain and husband Ted of Corinth; 2 brother-in-laws; 8 sister-in-laws; 10 grandchildren, Lisa, Kim, Tracy, Julie, Janine, Sherri, Terri, Devin, Valerie, and Angela; 19 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Archie, Faye was predeceased by her step-mother, Margaret (Fogg) Seamans; her brothers, Robert, Shirley, Trueman, and Darrel Seamans, and her sister, Phyllis (Seamans) Godreau; and her grandson, Scott Herrick.
Visiting hours were held at 1 PM at the Pleasant Street Christian Church in Corinna on Thursday, December 23rd. The funeral service followed at 2 PM with Pastor Edward Jaworski and Pastor Michael Troyer officiating. Burial will be held at Corinna Center cemetery in Corinna in the spring.

Gloria E. Knowles
DEXTER - Gloria E. Knowles, 84, died December 13, 2010 at her residence. She was born July 26, 1926 in Ward Hill, MA, a daughter of John and Violet (Hamlin) Mudge.
She is survived by her children, Diana and husband John Westcott, Timothy E. Knowles, and Christopher and wife Linda Knowles; 2 sisters, I. Norma Lipinski and Hazel Mudge; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dana F. Knowles.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, December 18th, at St. Anne’s Church, Free Street, Dexter, with the Rev. Kent Ouellette officiating. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal, Dexter.
Dorothy (Deering) Rowell
PALMYRA - Dorothy (Deering) Rowell, 87, of Main Street in Palmyra, passed away with grace and dignity, on December 16, 2010. “Dossie” was born in Harmony, Maine, on March 1, 1923, one of seven to Carroll and Bessie Deering. Marrying Charles B. Rowell on July 4, 1941, Doss and Charlie together formed several successful businesses and entrepreneurial adventures. Her tireless support of her husband, her children, and “the sisters” will remain her legacy. Dossie’s quiet strength and wise ways made her both a mentor and guide to those that knew her. She was loved by many and will be missed, yet inspired, by many more.
She is survived by a son, Larry (wife, Donna) Rowell of Hartland; two daughters, Delores (husband, Frank) Parillo of Ballston Spa, New York, and Jan Marie Chesterton (companion, Wayne) of Saratoga Springs, New York; four sisters, Caroline Reed of Harmony, Polly Sawyer of Newport, Ruth Post of Cambridge, and Barbara Hume of Augusta. In addition, Nana Doss leaves behind five grandchildren, Tina Parillo, Heidi Rowell, Michelle Rowell, Eric Rowell and Scott Parillo; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1993, and two brothers, Francis and Donald Deering.
A graveside service will be planned in the spring of 2011 at Village cemetery, in Pittsfield.

Vonnie A. Patchell
DEXTER - Vonnie A. Patchell, 82, died December 7, 2010 surrounded by her family at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born November 17, 1928 in Dexter, a daughter of Eustice and Flora (Dulac) Clukey. Vonnie grew up in Dexter and was best known for her years working as a Registered Nurse at Plummer Memorial Hospital. She touched many lives during her lifetime. Vonnie loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards. She enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona for many years.
She is survived by her sister Maxine and husband Roland Bernier of Winter Haven, FL; a daughter, Sally Fanjoy of Dexter; one grandchild Shawna Miyamoto, of Dexter. Vonnie will be sadly missed by several nephews, nieces and close friends in Maine and Arizona.

Mary Ellen Russell
PALMYRA & HARTLAND - Mary Ellen Russell, 78, passed away December 14, 2010 at a Bangor hospital surrounded by her family. She was born March 2, 1932 in Guilford, a daughter of Riley and Adeila (Parker) Stilson.
She was employed as a hairdresser in earlier years; worked as an activity director at Sebasticook Valley Health Care Facility, Pittsfield, and later, enjoyed volunteering as an AA counselor. She enjoyed time spent in Deer Isle with her family and friends.
Mary Ellen is survived by her 3 children; Barry and wife Diana Russell of Hartland, Kelli and husband Brent Frost of Pittsfield, and Charles “Jeff” Russell of Etna; her grandchildren, Brady and wife Angie Brooks of Kentucky, Darrin and wife Kathy Dyer of Palmyra, Deanna and husband Mitchell Harris of Blaine, Sarah and Domenick Frost, both of Pittsfield; and great grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Kevin, Ashley, and Adrienne; a foster sister, Noreen Catlin of Palmyra; as well as special friends, Elaine Vigue, Jane Palmer, and her constant companion and loving pet “Murphy”.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles M. Russell.
A celebration of her life will be held 5 PM Monday, December 20th, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Roger M. Martin
HARTLAND - Roger M. Martin, 71 died December 13, 2010 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer, with his wife and family by his side. Roger was born in Hartland August 7, 1939 the son of Clyde P. and Corrine (Evens) Martin. He graduated from Hartland Academy in the class of 1957. Roger was a stellar athlete at Hartland Academy lettering in baseball and basketball. His love of sports followed him all the days of his life.
Roger was employed at Irving Tanning Co. as a foreman for 18 years, at Sebasticook Valley Hospital for 20 years, and at Hartland Jr. High, now Somerset Valley Middle School for another 10 years where he was known as a mentor and “candy man” until his retirement in 2006.
Roger enjoyed cruising, golf, fishing and hunting. He coached little league baseball and was an avid Red Sox fan.
His many friends and family members would often seek his council. No matter the topic, he would start with, “In my opinion” and conclude with, “It is what it is”. He will be sadly missed by all the lives that he touched.
Roger is survived by his wife of 52 years Sharlene (Nickless) Martin of Hartland, four children; Roger Martin and his wife Julie of St. Albans, Jerry J. Martin of Hartland, and his significant other Maureen and son Jake, David A. Martin and his wife Jean of Sidney, Laurie Martin Andrews and her husband Mark of East Holden, two brothers, Elbert Duncan of Washington, DC, Richard Martin of Marshfield, MA, eight grandchildren; Nickless, Elizabeth, Seth, Mallory, Matthew, Elzadie, Emily, and Darby, three great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews that he thought of as his own children. He was predeceased by two sisters Marilyn Martin Clukey of Hartland, Ann Duncan Provost of Dexter, and a brother, Bayne L. Martin of Dexter.
Roger wanted to mention one special sister Sandy Hoover, one special brother Bruce Brown, and two lovely ladies Lynnette Martin and Loretta Martin that he thought so much of.
His family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Hertler and staff at the Alfond Cancer Center, Maine General Medical Center Oncology staff, Dr. Kevin Flanigan and the staff of Sebasticook Valley Hospital, Maine General Medical Center Health Reach Hospice nurses and home care providers especially Hollie and Andrea who became part of the family.
It is requested by the family should friends desire memorial contributions may be made to the Somerset Valley Middle School Show Chorus, (which gave him great joy and he was so proud of). Gilman Norris Friend
NEWPORT - Gilman N. Friend, 82, passed away December 11, 2010 at his High Street residence. He was born September 23, 1928 in Newport at the family home, a son of Norris and Isabel (Cooper) Friend. He lived out his life at his High Street home, the fourth generation of Friends and Coopers to do so.
Gil attended Newport Elementary School and graduated from New Hampton [NH] Academy. He graduated from Bowdoin College, Class of 1951. He attended Tuft’s Medical School in Boston for two years, before deciding that medicine was not for him. He wanted to be a salesman.
His first job was delivering and taking orders for beer. He eventually joined the family business, Friend and Friend, selling Ford and Mercury automobiles and managing a Mobil Oil distributorship. In 1968, Gil started and established the Friend and Friend Honda dealership which is still in existence today. After becoming a licensed realtor he purchased Pine Cone Realty at the triangle in Newport. He felt fortunate to be able to walk through his home town to his place of business, selling real estate until he was 76.
He married
the former Joyce Wilson of Wellesley, MA. They raised four children together: Nathan lives in New Hampshire with his wife Judy and their sons, Justin, Matthew and Adam. Dana lives at Sugarloaf Mountain with his wife Wendy and sons Tucker and Wilson. Daughter Tracey Moore lives in South Freeport with husband Ron and daughter Lauren. Daughter Trina lives in Boston.
Gil married
his friend Donna later in life. They had a wonderful life together traveling, cooking together, and summers spent at their Lake Wassokeag home filled with kids, cook outs and kayaks. Gil served many years as moderator for the Town of Newport and actively served in the Newport Historical Society. He was a longtime notary public and justice of the peace and delighted in marrying numerous couples. A lifelong Mason, he was a 50 year member of Meridian Splendor Lodge #49, a life member of the Royal Arch Chapter #28, St. John’s Commandery, the Scottish Rite, Bangor and Portland, Shrine International, and served as potentate of the Anah Shrine in 1976.
He served as first Chairman of the Board of Directors, Sebasticook Valley Hospital, Pittsfield, and was one of several area businessmen and women who were instrumental in the hospital’s founding.
He will be missed by many, friends and family, especially Donna, who has lost her greatest companion, friend and love.
Friends called from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 PM. M. Elizabeth “Libby” Stolpe
PLYMOUTH - Mary Elizabeth Stolpe, 71, died December 10, 2010 at her residence. She was born September 19, 1939 in Goffstown, NH, a daughter of William and Mary (Connelly) Ego. Libby was a loving grandmother, avid gardener and artist. She was an active church woman in Florida, providing decorations and meals for shut-ins, and was a long time volunteer at North Okaloosa [FL] Medical Center.
Libby is survived by a son, Rob W. Dexter and companion Dawn of Defuniak Springs, FL; 4 daughters, Suzan J. Dexter and companion Jason Orr, DVM, of Pittsfield; Nancy and husband Tim Harding of Plymouth; Linda and husband Bob Bruce of Holly Hill, FL, Sara and husband Gary Tetley of Manchester, MO; a brother, John Shedd and wife Delores of Amityville, NY; 3 sisters, Betty and Benjamin Tieso of Hyde Park, MA, Sister Mary Genevieve, FSST, of Buffalo, NY, Ann and husband Col. Charles Brown of Fort Walton Beach, FL; 2 sisters in law, Elle and husband Lewis Janetos of Rawlingsford, NH, and Lois and husband Jim Elliott of Olathe, KS; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and many nieces.
She was predeceased by her husband, Col. Robert Stolpe, USAF, in 2008; a daughter Suzan Pearl; and a sister, Marie Hamilton.

Helen Louise (Snow) Cookson
CAMBRIDGE - Helen Louise (Snow) Cookson, 74, passed away December 3, 2010, surrounded by her devoted family, at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft. She was born September 15, 1936, in Oakland, daughter of Lyman and Bertha (Trask) Snow.
Helen loved spending time with her family and friends, bragging about her grandchildren, playing her guitar, babysitting, camping, and playing cards with close friends. In her younger years, she enjoyed motorcycling, hunting, fishing, gardening, and genealogy. She worked for many years and had many friends at Dexter Shoe Company.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Alston R. Cookson Sr.; two sons, Alston R. "Rusty" Cookson Jr. and his wife Robin K., and Keith A. Cookson and his wife April J. all of Cambridge; two grandchildren, Nathan, and Kaitlin Cookson; a step-grandson, Christopher S. Dunnell; two step-great grandchildren, Brannen and Kaelyn Dunnell; a special sister, Violet L. Shields and her husband, Merle K., of Mercer, who they did many things with over the years, a sister, Linda Snow of Bangor; and a brother, Lyman L. Snow and his wife, Carol, of Wayne; many special nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is predeceased by her parents; and three brothers, David, Robert, and Donald.
Funeral services were held 1 PM, Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at Crosby & Neal, 61 Main St., Dexter, with Pastor Ray Beless officiating. Friends called Tuesday, from 10 AM until the time of the service. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Alston and Helen's home in Cambridge following the funeral. Burial will be held in the spring at the family's convenience. Special thanks to the staff at Mayo Regional Hospital for their kindness to Helen and her family at a difficult time.
