Marie Gilbert
ETNA - Marie Gilbert passed away January 13, 2009. She was born in Frenchville, ME on June 7, 1911, the second oldest of ten children. She moved to Winslow when she was 8 years old and lived in the Waterville-Winslow area for 72 years, until she moved to Etna to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She lived with them for 17 years. Marie was a very shy, sweet, quiet spoken and proud lady. She would speak with anyone that talked to her first, because she found it hard to speak first as she was so shy. Marie worked hard all of her life, helping to take care of her younger sisters and brothers. Marie was married
to the love of her life for 53 years, Earl Gilbert. Earl and Marie did everything together and had fun. Even going to the filling station for an oil change and having to go up on the lift which she didn’t like. They were very devoted to each other. Marie and Earl were married
in 1931 during the Depression. They started their life together with nothing, eating turnips that her father gave them. She cooked turnips all different ways, boiling and eating them whole, mashing them and making turnip soup. They had things better after a few years. They had 5 children that were well taken care of and at mealtime there were always other children to feed, nieces, nephews and neighborhood children because their parents worked. She wasn’t a fancy cook but her meals were healthy and tasty. Later in life they had 15 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. It became a big family. Earl used to tease her and say, “Look what we started”. They loved all of them. Marie made things for her family, mittens, scarves, hats, slippers and afghans. She wanted to make sure they were all warm and healthy. She loved getting together with family and friends. Marie was the Golden Cane recipient of Etna. Though she never volunteered to start anything, she would always help and see things through to the end. She loved to peel potatoes and squash for the Thanksgiving Dinner at the Community Center in Newport, serving 100 people more or less, with just herself and one other lady. She gave her time to help the readers at the Etna-Dixmont School, she played beano, and loved playing cards with her friends once a week. She made dishcloths and gave them away, she knit bandages for the poor people overseas and made squares for the Humane Society. She also made things for the Home for Wanderers to keep the children warm and she made lap warmers for the wheelchair residents at Togus. Marie and Earl traveled to places overseas and spent winters in Florida for 11 years. She made a lot of friends in her life and was well liked. She touched the hearts of numerous people, but was humble and says, “she never does much”. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends that loved her. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Earl L. Gilbert and two sons, Lawrence and Clarence. She is survived by three children, Carl L. Gilbert and wife Ellen, Beverly Quirion and husband James of Winslow and Phyllis Ames and husband Eugene of Etna. A Celebration of Life Mass was held at St. John’s Church in Winslow at 11:00 on January 24, 2009. The family wishes to thank Dr. Flanigan and all the nurses at Sebasticook Valley Hospital and Nursing Home. The care and kindness shown during mom’s final days made her feel special.
