Barnard service
AUGUSTA — For those who could not attend Saturday, April 7, at South Parish Congregational Church, the service for John M.H. Barnard, M.D., who died March 15, 2001, was blessed with sunshine, love, friends and the soft, joyous and spiritual music of organist Margaret Godfrey.
Rev. John Zehring's tribute was uplifting, personal and beautifully presented.
Lifelong friend John Dineen opened the curtain onto Dr. Barnard's childhood and college days, and his singing of the Irish blessing, "May The Road Rise Up to Greet You," elicited a spontaneous response.
Douglas Black recalled their meeting at the start of medical school, living with him and Harriet for four years, and shared private sentiments. Sylvia Lund spoke about John's special place in her heart as a personal physician, providing pre-natal care for three of her children, and as a friend. Jane Laurin, a co-worker and dear friend of 40 years, commented on John's dedication to his patients, the community, his family, and his humility.
Robert Whytock, former principal at Cony High School, recalled his close association with the boys and girls and the pleasure "Doc Rock" gave him, and of his continuing friendship. Dr. James Brassard, his attending physician and young colleague, spoke of Dr. Barnard being a physician to the end, and of his influence on him as a physician.
Daughter, Katie, speaking for the family, tendered their love and appreciation for being a loving and devoted husband and father, and read so lovingly "The Family Doctor," a touching portrait of her Dad. "A wonderful man," "dear friend," "cannot be replaced," were the sentiments of all.
Tina Whitcomb, a singular vocalist with the voice of an angel, sang "I Will Remember You," "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Goodbye, My Friend."
After the singing of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," in military costume, Billy Irish's slow drum beat lead a soft goodbye down the aisle and off into the sunshine.
Dr. Barnard would be shaking his head in disbelief, wiping an eye and saying, "This was just beautiful. It's too much, you guys. Thank you, my dear friends, thank you again."
Ushers were Harry Jose, Richard Lorenz, Al Card and Jerry Lauzon.
He will buried beside his parents, in Farmingdale Cemetery.
Donations to the The John M.H. Barnard, M.D., Scholarship Fund may be mailed to Box 5236, Augusta 04330.
Arrangements were by Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta 04330.
