Leslie J. Lovley

NEWPORT - Leslie J. Lovley, 76, died April 19, 2004 at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born April 6, 1928 at Washburn, a son of Clarence and Una (Boulier) Lovley. Les was a well-known area businessman for the past 40 years. He was a former trustee of the Carmel Union Congregational Church and was an avid golfer and bowler. He is survived by his wife, Gail of Newport and Lake Worth, FL; his children, Linda and husband Tom Walsh of Sunset Key, FL, Gregory and wife Deborah Lovley of Newport, Scott and wife Jeri Lovley of Plymouth and Donald Davis, III of Corinna; 2 brothers, Duane and wife Doris Ann Lovley of Newport and Merwyn and wife Judy Lovley of Hermon; 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Gayle Adams. Relatives and invited guests called 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, April 22nd at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services were held 11 AM.Friday with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Burial will be at the Highland cemetery, Carmel, later in the spring.

Maria E. Meservey

PITTSFIELD - Maria E. Meservey, 86, of Pittsfield passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2004 at Sebasticook Valley Hospital, Pittsfield. She was born in Calexico, CA on Sept. 28, 1917 the daughter of Francisco and Andrea Jaime. She came to Maine in 1940. She was previously employed by Cianbro Corp. and also worked at Northeast Shoe. Maria loved to cook and share her meals with friends. She loved to garden. She was a communicant at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Pittsfield and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include daughters Sylvia Woodward, Martha Ouelette, Bonita Waltman, Maria Meservey; 32 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; sisters Asussana, Toni, Armeada, Martha, Lolita; many nieces and nephews; special friend Marion Norris She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Meservey and a daughter Carmen; brothers Carlos, Nayo, Bernardo and Jaime. Visiting hours were held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 10 at Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Agnes Church, 50 Detroit Ave., Pittsfield. at 11 a.m., on Friday, June 11, with Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Iheaka. Burial to follow at the Village cemetery, Pittsfield.

Louise M. Hatch

DEXTER - Louise M. Hatch, 92, died July 6, 2004, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born December 19, 1911, in Glenburn, daughter of John and Stella (Preble) Flagg. She worked for several years at Ben Franklin Store, Koritsky‚s, United Store, the Dexter school system in the cafeteria, and for 27 years at Plummer Memorial Hospital in Dexter. She was a seamstress for many years, and in her younger days, she enjoyed hunting and fishing. She is survived by a stepson, Dennis Hatch of Milo; 2 stepdaughters, Velora Reed of Hermon and Linda Reed of Hampden; and a nephew, John French of Dover-Foxcroft. She was predeceased by her husband, Lindell Hatch; and a sister, Marjorie French. Friends called 7-9 PM, Friday July 9, 2004, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 61 Main Street in Dexter. Graveside funeral services were held 11 AM Saturday at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Dexter.

Donald C. Littlefield

CORINNA - Donald C. Littlefield, 81, died July 6, 2004 at a Pittsfield hospital. He was born in Montville February 8, 1923 a son of Charlie and Marianne (Carter) Littlefield. He received his high school diploma from Mount View High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theatre. In 1946 he started Littlefield’s Garage in Corinna, where he operated a Jeep and farm equipment dealership, which is now operated as Littlefield’s Used Auto Parts by his son. Don especially loved the 14 years he and Esther wintered in Kissimmee, Florida and the summers on Big Indian Pond in St. Albans. He was a member of the Marsh River Masonic Lodge in Brooks, and the Corinna Post American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Esther (Reynolds) Littlefield of Corinna; his son, Kerby and wife Gail Littlefield of Corinna; 2 daughters, Sharon Littlefield of Cumberland, Muriel Littlefield and husband Kenneth Toner, of Freeport; 2 brothers, Clayton Littlefield and wife Pauline of Montville, Royce and wife Elva Littlefield of Jackson; grandchildren, Mark Irish, Hillary Salisbury, Ezekiel Toner, Tracy Farnham; and a great grand-daughter, Emma Farnham; several nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his devoted dog Chrissy. Friends called from 5-8 PM Thursday at Crosby & Neal Funeral Chapel, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where a Masonic funeral service will be held at 2 PM Friday, July 9th. An American Legion committal service will be conducted at the Corinna Center cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Corinna Post #73, American Legion, P.O. Box 1, Corinna, ME 04928.

John E. Hurlburt

NEWPORT AND LAKE WALES FLORIDA - John E. Hurlburt, 91, died May 28, 2004 at a Lake Wales Florida health care facility following a brief illness. He was born in Sherman Mills June 2, 1912 the son of Lyman and Etta (Humphrey) Hurlburt. He was educated in Sherman schools. John married Alice Ludden on July 29, 1933. For over 25 years John was employed as a machinist at Faye Scott Industries in Dexter. For several years John and Alice have spent their winters in Lake Wales and their summers at their camp in Sangerville. John served in the Army National Guard in Newport for three years. He and Alice were long time members of the Lords and Ladies Square Dance Club and danced at many places throughout the state. He is survived by his wife of 70 years Alice L. Hurlburt of Newport and Lake Wales, two sons, Vaughn Hurlburt of Hampton VA., Dennis Hurlburt of Danville Calif., three daughters, Beulah Hanson of Eliot, Charlene Burbury of Whitinsville Mass., Janice Moores of Newport, one brother George Hurlburt of Farmington, one sister Rena Fernald of Lake Wales, 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. His son John Gailen Hurlburt predeceased him in 1990. Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Monday June 7, 2004 at the Brown Funeral Home 34 High Street Newport with Pastor Al Worden officiating. Vivienne D. (Carle) Fanjoy, 89, Dexter, ME and Brooksville, FL passed away January 25, 2004 at Brooksville, FL. A graveside Committal Service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, June 5 at Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Dexter.

Dorothy Kurt

PALMYRA - Dorothy Kurt went to be with her husband Ernest Kurt on Thursday, September 23, 2004. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, December 6, 1911 a daughter of George and Margaret (Siebert) Martin. She was a graduate of Bushwick High School in Brooklyn. She also met and married her husband in Brooklyn in June 1933. They moved with their son Curtis to Palmyra, Maine in 1954 to run the Palmyra General Store and Post Office. Dorothy served as Postmaster for the Town of Palmyra for 23 years and became a well known community member. She retired in 1977. Dot was a member of Nokomis Chapter #42, Order of The Eastern Star in Newport, where she held a number of offices up until the time she was no longer able to attend. She was a member of the White Shrine, the Palmyra Christmas Club, and was treasurer of Palmyra Senior Citizens. Dot was also an active member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Palmyra, where she met her dear friend, the Rev. Janet McAuley. Dorothy loved to travel and enjoyed many trips throughout the United States and Canada. She is survived by her only son, Curtis Kurt and wife Sylvia; two grandchildren, Michael Kurt and wife Trisha, and Stacey (Kurt) Donaldson and husband Rick; 5 great grandchildren, Donovan Kurt, Mathew Thornton, Brendan, Damian, and Abbigail Donaldson. She is also survived by a loving sister, Margie Ludlow; her niece Lynn and family, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Dorothy wanted the world to remember her as this poem she chose states:

“After Glow”
I’d like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow
of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo
whispering softly down the ways,
of happy times and laughing times
and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
to dry before the sun
of happy memories that I leave
when life is done.

Friends called from 2-4 PM Sunday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services were held 2 PM Monday, September 27th, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, Main Street, Palmyra with the Rev. Janet McAuley officiating. Burial will be in the family lot, Palmyra Village cemetery. Following the committal a reception will be held at Memorial Hall next door to the church. In lieu of Flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Martin's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 107, Palmyra, ME 04965. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.

Colleen A. Bowman

EXETER - Colleen A. Bowman, 69, died September 23, 2004, at an Augusta nursing home. She was born June 25, 1935, in Hartland, the daughter of Olon and Augusta Rowe. She worked at Dexter shoe in Dexter. She enjoyed music and singing; and fishing, camping, snowmobiling, and four-wheeling with her husband, Terry, and special friends, Clayton and Brenda Royal of Dexter. She was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Ted, Bud, and Herbert. She is survived by her husband Terry Bowman of Dexter; a brother Maynard and his wife Frances Rowe of Naples, Florida; two sisters Deloris and her husband Hap O'Brian of Dover-Foxcroft, and Doreen Levensalor of Dexter; a son: Rodney and his wife Jill Leighton and granddaughter Ashley all of North Kingston, Rhode Island; a daughter, Deborah and her husband, Norm Steeves and grandson Patrick and his wife Nicole Steeves and greatgrandson Cole of Pittsfield; several nieces and nephews. There will be no public services at this time. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Dexter.

Terri Eileen Lemieux

EXETER - Terri Eileen Lemieux died peacefully, September 29, 2004, surrounded by her loving family. Her long-fought battle with cancer has come to an end. She was born October 1, 1965, in Bangor, Maine. Terri touched so many people’s lives during her 39 years of life. Her generous giving of time, energy, a shoulder, and especially her food, was just a small part of the incredible person she was. She was a great sister, wife, and mother, a wonderful daughter, and the best friend anyone would want. Terri worked in the family business for over 20 years as a bookkeeper and a pharmacy tech. She loved to help people and make them smile. She always cherished her time at Wilson Pond, playing cards and just spending time with her family and friends. This time spent gave her the strength to battle on every day. Terri is survived by her husband of 19 years, Stephen J. Lemieux, and their sons Benjamin and Kyle; her parents Donald and Eileen Pushor of Guilford, siblings Donn and sister-in-law Katie of Lebanon, Kim Lynch and brother-in-law Lonnie of Wiscassett, Shawn and sister-in-law Anita of Abbot, and Chris and sister-in-law Amy of Trenton. She will also be sadly missed by her in-laws John and Jeannie Lemieux of Sangerville, and her sisters-in-laws Sue and husband Greg Zagorianakos, Carla and her husband Leon LaFerriere of Gorham, and Cheri and her husband Erik Shulz of Scarborough. Her nieces and nephews, and family and friends who she loved so much will sadly miss her. Visiting hours will be Monday, October 4, 2004 from 5 to 8 pm at the Guilford United Methodist Church fellowship hall. The funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at 11 am at the Methodist Church with Pastor Daniel Bollen officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn cemetery in Guilford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Bangor Hydro Federal Credit Union, c/o Lemieux Boys College Fund, 193 Broad Street, Suite 3, Bangor, ME 04401, or to the American Cancer Society, One Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham, Maine 04086-1240. Erma Y. Underhill

STETSON - Erma Y. Underhill, 91, died November 2, 2004 at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born May 13, 1913 at Enfield, a daughter of Elwin and Emma (Johnson) Savage. She married William H. Underhill on April 28, 1931; and he predeceased her on August 9, 1964. Erma worked as a cook for the Stetson School Department hot lunch program. Later she drove a school bus for her sister’s Stetson bus service. She also served as the tax collector for the Town of Stetson for many years. She was a Past Noble Grand of the Lakeside Rebekah’s in Etna, was a 50 year member of the Stetson Grange, a 50 year member of the Carmel Extension, and had currently been a member of the Golden Harvest Grange in Carmel. Erma was a devoted member of The Scallawags, and will also be remembered as an avid Beano player. She is survived by 3 sons, Everett and wife Kay of Stetson, Arthur and wife Glenace of Corinth, Ralph and wife Nancy of Newport; a daughter, Jane and husband Michael Sherry of Woburn, Mass.; a brother, Lucien Savage of Palmyra; a sister, Marion Knowlton of Bangor; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren. Friends called from 6-8 PM Thursday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services were be held at the funeral home 1 PM Friday, November 5th, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. Burial will follow at the Clark’s Hill cemetery, Stetson. Memorial donations may be made to the Golden Harvest Grange; c/o Helen McDonald, RR #3; Box 1336; Carmel, ME 04419.

Scott E. Smith

PITTSFIELD - Scott E. Smith, 84, died October 19, 2004; he peacefully passed away while fishing on Great Moose Lake in Hartland. He was born June 28, 1920 in Mars Hills, the son of Beecher Smith and Emma (Miller) Smith. He graduated Mars Hill High school and then went on to attend Fort Kent State Teachers College. He was also a veteran of World War II in the Army. He was a poultry farmer for several years and before that he worked as a hand sewer at Northeast Shoe in Pittsfield. Scott was predeceased by his wife Kay. He is survived by one daughter, Susan Mullins of Kentucky, a son Roger Smith and his wife Georgette Hunter of Limerick, five grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Graveside service was at 12 noon Wednesday October 27th, 2004, Maine Veterans cemetery; Augusta. Arrangements are under the direction of Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, Maine 04967.

Sandra D. Russell

HARTLAND - Sandra D. Russell, 67, of Hartland, past away peacefully Sunday, October 31, 2004 at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield. She was born in Montague City, MA on May 26, 1937; she was the daughter of Dominic and Nadine (Briggs) Giordano. Sandra was educated in Connecticut and Maine. She married Clifton Russell in Sangerville in 1966. Sandra was the housekeeping supervisor at the Sebasticook Valley Nursing Home in Pittsfield and she also worked at the Sunrise Café in St. Albans. One of Sandra’s greatest joys in life was her family, though she enjoyed traveling (especially to Boothbay), reading and watching sports on T.V. She is survived by her husband Clifton of 38 years. Sandy is also survived by her eight children, five sons, Wade Hall, Les Russell and his fiancé Randi Cookson, Craig Russell and his companion Dwight Whitney, Christopher Russell and fiancé Tammy Dyer, Michael Russell and companion Jennifer Murray, three daughters; Nara Leavitt and her husband Randy, Teri Fanjoy and her companion Andre Poulin, Nadine Glidden and her husband Jeremy.
She is survived by fifteen grandchildren, Heidi and Adam Russell, Branden and Trevor Leavitt, Cory Fanjoy, Matthew Cathell, Ashley Russell, Nichoal Hook, Brent Russell, Brittany Manson, Kayla Glidden, Newman Cummings, and Keegan, Quinten, and Lexus Grass. two brothers, Mark and Dominic Giordano, six sisters, Sherill Hayden, Roxanne Latabouche, Cindy Bayerdorffer, Nina Brawn, Marcia Harrington, Bridgett Bray and several very special nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a brother Justin Giordano. There was a Memorial Celebration on Saturday, November 6th, 2004 from 10 to 4, at the Russell Home, 35 Blake Street, Hartland, Maine. Arrangements are under the directions of Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 35 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield, Maine 04967.

Philip G. Coburn

NEWPORT & HAINES CITY, FLORIDA - Philip Graves Coburn, 75, died peacefully in his sleep October 12, 2004 at the Coburn cottage in Ripley. He was born June 4, 1929 at Coburn Farm in North Newport, the son of John and Lillian (Graves) Coburn. Phil graduated from Newport High School in 1946, the post-graduate program at Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield, and the University of Maine with a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1951. He married Joanne Burke in 1951 and, as the fifth generation on the family farm, he and Joanne began their farming career at the Coburn homestead with 5 cows and 440 acres of farmland. Phil’s herd grew to over 400 high-producing Holsteins, which were sold in 1986 in the Whole Herd Buyout Program. His land holdings grew to over 1000 acres, including 500 acres of fodder corn, for which he was awarded recognition several times from the National Corn Growers‚ Association. In addition to corn, Phil also raised beef cattle until his retirement in 1996 when the farm was sold. He served on numerous Newport town committees including the Newport School Board and the Budget Committee. In 1962, Phil became a part-time insurance agent for Farm Family Insurance Company, eventually rising to agency manager and then district manager for the State of Maine. Phil returned to the farm in 1966 and initiated an expansion and modernization program. In 1986 he received the Maine Dairy Industry Leader Award. In addition to serving as a director of New England Milk Producer’s Association, he was the Vice President of the Maine Farm Bureau Association, American Soil Conservation Service Committeeman, Secretary-Treasurer of the Penobscot County DHIA, Vice President of Yankee Milk, Chairman of the Board of the Agrimark Cooperative, a member and past Master of the Parian Lodge #160 AM & FM, Corinna, and Anah Shrine of Bangor. He was a member of the Corinna United Methodist Church. Phil was an avid fan and supporter of the University of Maine athletic program and a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox. He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 53 years, Joanne of Ripley; a daughter Debra and husband William Ziemer of Lucerne-in-Maine; grandchildren, Michael Ziemer of Aspen, CO and Katherine Ziemer of Boston, MA; a sister, Mary and husband Michael Holmes of Cumberland; several nieces, nephews and cousins; many special friends including Allan and Sue Dickey, Richard and Ginny Metivier, Dan and Tammy Brazier. He was predeceased by his parents, John Coburn and Lillian Coburn Roberts, step-father Carl Roberts, and an infant sister Betty. Friends called from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Thursday, October 14th, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport, where a Masonic service was conducted at 7 PM. Funeral services were held 11 AM. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Bruce Hudson officiating. Burial will be in the North Newport cemetery. Those who wish may contribute in Phil’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, N. Canton, OH 44720; or the University of Maine Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o Office of University Development, Buchanan Alumni House, 1 Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.
