Joyce McKenzie Packard
NEWPORT - Joyce McKenzie Packard, 52, died Saturday close to the waters of Lake Sebasticook, that had warmed her soul with many peaceful contemplations amid her feathered friends of all varieties. She was born in Bangor September 22, 1950 a daughter of Francis Mac and Virginia Ginnie (Hackett) McKenzie. She was a 1968 graduate of Newport High School, and a 2000 graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta. She was a member of the High Street Church, Hospices of Somerset and Penobscot County, a Trustee of Sebasticook Valley Hospital and the Maine Hospital Association Board, and was until recently the Trustee Chairman of both organizations. Joyce was proud to be a member of the Institute for Global Ethics and belonged to the Newport Womens Club, the Sebasticook Valley Chamber of Commerce, and other clubs. The world will suffer the loss of her contributions in the area of public trust and advocacy, and her willingness to be an outspoken community representative. She will be remembered by family, friends and hospital trustee colleagues at the local, state and national level because of her passion for life and her ability to have fun, all the while having a tremendous willingness to serve and give her time in the support of what she believed in.
She followed her heart to Siberia with the Patch Adams Gesundheit Foundation and met many soul mates with whom she stayed close the remainder of her life. She met many lifetime friends on her missionary trip to Haiti. She enjoyed talking about those experiences and encouraging others to reach out and help the less fortunate. At the time of her death she was working on becoming less judgmental and more accepting, more educated, more loving, more artistic, more serene, less hurried and less affected by daily interruptions from crazy makers. She is survived by her husband, Stephen; two sons, Allen and Sarah, Darren and Liza Brawn. A beloved son, Andrew Packard, went on before her to guide her along the path to heaven. She has two treasured grandchildren, Cody and Cassie Brawn. She bids farewell to her sister Connie Mayette, brother in law Mike Mayette and nieces Kate and Amanda. She will also be missed sorely by her brother John McKenzie, her sister Geraldine Merritt, her brother in law Arnold Merritt, and nieces Laurie and Lisa. She also left behind Mary Packard Lavers, a big fan, as well as being a mother in law; a brother in law David Packard; two sisters in law, Ann and James Boyd, Christine and James Fleming; her nephews and nieces Katherine, Erin, Ian, and Adam Boyd; and Isabelle McKenzie Heald and her husband John; as well as many mentors, relatives, fans, admirers and friends. The family received friends from 6-9 PM Tuesday at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Newport. Funeral services were held 11 AM Wednesday, September 24th, at High Street Church, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating. In lieu of cut flowers, please authorize the florist to present only potted trees and plants to the services, to be afterwards shared by family members and friends as a living remembrance of her love for them all.
