Dimitra Arabatzis
SACO - Dimitra L. Arabatzis, 77, of Plymouth Drive, died Sunday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
She was born in Abuhamat, Egypt on Feb. 5, 1925, a daughter of Cleanthes and Pipina Tsounis Contoplianos, and attended elementary school in Egypt and high school in Greece.
In 1949, she married
Cleanthes Arabatzis. He died in March 1990.
Mrs. Arabatzis came to Saco from the Bronx, N.Y. in 1992 and had lived previously in Athens, Greece and Alexandria, Egypt.
She was a member of the Senior Citizens Group of the Bronx, Ladies Philoptochos Society of the Bronx, Daughters of Penelope of the Bronx and Saco, Women's Society of St. Fotini and St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Saco.
Survivors include two sons, Father Basil of Saco, with whom she lived, and Minas of Hamilton, N.J.; three sisters, Anthromahi Stamboulis, Despina Sardianos and Ioanna Alavantis, all of Greece; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Florence Brown
SACO - Florence J. Brown, 92, formerly of Middle Street, died Thursday at St. Andre's Health Care Facility in Biddeford.
She was born April 14, 1909 in Scarborough, a daughter of William and Josephine Turner Collins, and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1927.
She worked in sales at Porteous, Mitchell and Braun for 15 years, then moved to Greenville, S.C. for 14 years.
She retired to Saco in 1971.
Her husband, Millard "Duke" Brown, died in 1972.
Roger Fogg
SACO - Roger Fogg, 91, of Meserve Circle, died Saturday at Tobey Hospital in Wareham, Mass.
He was born in Dorchester, Mass. on June 15, 1910, a son of Edwin A. II and Anna L. Picanco Fogg, and graduated from Dorchester High School and Worcester Academy in 1931, where he was captain of the soccer team.
Mr. Fogg was employed by Burroughs Machine Co. and F.O. Bailey, both of Dorchester. A self-employed lobster and fisherman, he owned and operated Fogg's Lobster Pound at Pine Point and continued lobstering until he was 85. He was the building inspector for Scarborough from 1965 until 1972 and was instrumental in establishing the Maine Building Inspection Association.
He married
Elsie Rohan Doody in 1977 and they wintered in Punta Gorda, Fla., where they enjoyed dancing into their 90s. He was part of a group that sang at nursing homes while in Florida. He loved to sing, dance and play the harmonica. At the age of 90, he was still doing the calls at square dances. At the age of 91, he was tending to his vegetable garden, cutting down trees and splitting his own firewood. He was a charter member of the Orchard Lodge AM & AF.
He was a communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church.
His first wife, Audrey K. Turner, whom he married
in 1937, died in 1974.
Survivors include his wife of Saco and West Wareham; a son, Robert of Raymond; a daughter, Audrey (Mrs. Joe) Lucier of Lake Wales, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Denyse Manley of West Wareham; three stepsons, George Doody of Saco and John and Ronnie Doody, both of South Portland; six grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several stepgreat-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Albert Kotze
KENNEBUNK - Former Huntington Common resident Albert Kotze, 95, died Saturday at the Southridge Living Center in Biddeford.
He was born April 28, 1906 in Merrick, N.Y., a son of Paul and Anna Kotze.
A longtime employee of Grumman Aircraft, he was employed 30 years, retiring as an engraver. Family members say he took pride in having worked on the cockpit of the first moon landing craft for the space program.
Mr. Kotze was an avid bowler and for five years served as president of the Sayville, N.Y. Senior Citizens Center.
His wife, Caroline Rehm Kotze, died Nov. 12, 1994, and a daughter, Dorothy Broring, died Aug. 29.
Survivors include three sons, Albert of Portsmouth, R.I., Ronald of Oakdale, N.Y., and Kenneth of Oak Hill, N.Y.; a daughter, Carolyn Van Deinse of Kennebunk; a brother, Paul; two sisters, Lillian and Elwinda; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Michael Brown
BIDDEFORD - Michael Paul Brown Sr., 56, died Friday at Southridge Living Center after a battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 21, 1945 in Kennebunk, a son of Forest and Olive Thibeau Brown, and graduated from Kennebunk High School.
Mr. Brown was employed by Herman Shoe in Scarborough for several years and Precision Screw in Biddeford for 12 years. Later in life, he worked for George Newman's and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Biddeford, for several years.
He enjoyed handcrafts, fishing, bowling and wrestling and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
A brother, Forest Jr., and a sister, Pamela, died previously.
Survivors include his ex-wife, Annette Mercier Brown of Biddeford; two sons, Michael P. Jr. of Biddeford and Brian K. of Goldsboro, N.C.; a daughter, Therese L. Gregoire of Biddeford; two brothers, John of South Portland and Raymond of Saco; two sisters, Janet Gilblair of Biddeford and Pauline Curtis of Cape Elizabeth; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Lorraine Baron
SACO - Lorraine M. Girard Baron, 42, of Jenkins Road, died unexpectedly Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center.
She was born in Portland Jan. 16, 1959, the daughter of Robert and Georgette Gagne Girard, and was educated in Biddeford schools. She graduated from Biddeford High School in 1977.
Ms. Baron was employed as the production planning manager at West Point Stevens for 23 years.
She was a member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and had been active in its fundraising efforts. She also belonged to the West Point Stevens Supervisors Club.
Ms. Baron loved helping others, especially family and friends. Her warmth and ever-present smile were her way of making other people feel good. She loved to visit and travel, but mostly enjoyed being home. Holiday cooking for her family was important to her. Ms. Baron frequently visited St. Andre's Health Care Facility to see her mother and to help the other residents as well. She loved flower and vegetable gardening, and enjoyed doing work around her home. She was an avid bird watcher, and enjoyed sunbathing and spending time at the ocean, reading, watching movies, taking photographs, collecting angels, and driving her 1988 Mazda.
Surviving are her fiancée and best friend of 18 years, Wayne Foss of Saco; her father and stepmother, Gloria Girard of Claremont, N.C.; her mother of Biddeford; a sister, Constance Girard of Bangor; four brothers, Norman, Richard and Bertrand Girard, all of Biddeford, and Roland Girard of Saco; two stepdaughters, Jessica L. Foss of Manchester, N.H., and Lindsey J. Foss of Saco; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Lawrence Fenderson
SACO - Lawrence E. Fenderson, 95, of Maple Drive, died Friday at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford.
He was born in Saco on May 15, 1906, a son of Sumner and Mary Harris Fenderson, and attended Saco schools.
Mr. Fenderson retired from United Auto Parts, where he had been a parts manager and purchasing agent for 38 years.
He enjoyed crossword puzzles and loved classic cars, especially his 1915 Chevrolet.
He was a World War II Army veteran and a communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Anna Beaulieu Fenderson; two daughters, Ann Marie Hickey of Holt, Mich. and Helen Laplante of Broken Arrow, Okla.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Carl Carter
SACO - Former resident Carl A. Carter, 72, of Broadturn Road in Scarborough, died Saturday at a Portland hospital.
He was born in Portland, the son of Carl and Dorothy Kennedy Carter, attended Scarborough schools, and graduated from Thornton Academy.
Mr. Carter worked for Maine Central Railroad for 25 years, and later owned and operated C.A. Carter, Inc. in Scarborough for 30 years.
He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
His hobbies included gardening, snowmobiling and camping.
Mr. Carter was a communicant of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church and was a member and past commander of the former Scarborough AMVETS.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Dorothy McLain Carter; three sons, Howard F. and Daniel W., both of Saco, and Terence J. of Scarborough; a daughter, Eileen (Mrs. Joseph) Williams of Meriden, N.H.; a brother, Gary of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Roberta Jordan and Nancy Skea, both of Saco; and 11 grandchildren.
Rene Blouin
ALFRED - Rene R. Blouin, 64, of Saco Road, died Friday at the Newton Center in Sanford after a two-year battle with cancer.
He was born in Sanford on July 13, 1936, a son of Hector and Evangelina Lapointe Blouin, and graduated from the former St. Ignatius High School in 1955.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959. Following his discharge, he attended meat cutting school and was employed by Hannaford Brothers for many years. He later worked for Central Furniture and Appliances and at Waban in Sanford.
In 1981, Mr. Blouin purchased the Alfred Country Store and served as its sole proprietor until earlier this year, when he retired due to ill health.
His interests included snowmobiling, four-wheeling, hunting and fishing. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed traveling and camping with friends and family. Family members said he was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and friend who spent his life working to provide happiness and fulfillment for his family.
He was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church and a member of L'Union St. Jean de Baptiste and the Maine Grocery Association.
He was the companion of Maureen Bourgeois of Sanford.
Survivors include his son, James of Alfred; a sister, Jeannine Bernard of Sanford; a granddaughter, Abigail of Alfred; and a nephew, Bryan Bernard of Sanford.
Elsie Bernier
KENNEBUNK - Elsie L. Bernier, 87, of Alfred Road, died Monday morning at RiverRidge.
She was born in Sanford on June 17, 1913, a daughter of Joseph and Olivine Bernier Hamel, and attended the Holy Family School before moving to Kennebunk when she was 14 years old.
Mrs. Bernier was employed by the Kesslen Shoe Factory in Kennebunk for many years, retiring in the late 1960s.
She enjoyed hooking rugs, gardening and traveling and was a member of the Golden Girls and the Fifty Plus Club.
She was a parishioner of St. Martha's Church.
Her husband, Victor Douglas Bernier, died in 1954. Four brothers and four sons, Douglas, Paul, Robert and Donald, have also died.
She is survived by two sons, Raymond D. of Sanford and James P. of West Kennebunk; two daughters, Gloria S. of Hartford, Conn. and Carol A. Feeney of Bloomfield, Conn.; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Percy Casey
SANFORD - Percy Casey, 60, died Friday at Goodall Hospital.
He was born Oct. 11, 1941 in Ashland, a son of Charles Casey, and was educated at Dunstan School in Scarborough.
Mr. Casey was employed at the former Aerofab Inc. in Sanford.
Surviving are a son, Mike of Sanford; a daughter, Theresa Milliard of Sanford; three sisters, Shirley Macomber of Saco, Lorette Isola of Wallingford, Conn. and Dolly of Arizona; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Aldeus Brouillard
BIDDEFORD - Aldeus S. "Pete" Brouillard, 92, of Foss Street, died Saturday at Southern Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Asbestos, Quebec, Canada, a son of Joseph and Josephine Morin Brouillard, and was educated in Biddeford schools.
He worked at Bates Manufacturing Co. for a few years. He attended a refrigeration school in Chicago, Ill., then worked over 20 years for Jordan's Meats Co. in Portland.
Mr. Brouillard was an inventor of specialized automotive tools, hair products, custom paints, and automotive lubricants, and designed underwater valves for diving and salvaging operations. Many of these inventions were patented.
He enjoyed traveling to Florida, visiting family in Canada, and restoring antique cars, some of which are in the Owl's Head Museum. He built the "Frank Mobile" for Jordan's Meats Co., seen in many parades and community events. He was a jack-of-all-trades who completely restored his home.
Surviving are two daughters, Lucille Perreault of Biddeford and Jacklyn Beaudoin of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
