Ernest Foss
BERWICK - Ernest Fred Foss, 76, lovingly called “Grandpa” by all, of 308 Cranberry Meadow Rd., Berwick, died suddenly on Feb. 7, 2005.
He was born in Somersworth, N.H. on Nov. 26, 1928, to Amos and Zelia (Worster) Foss. He was raised in Somersworth, graduated from Somersworth High School and attended the University of New Hampshire.
He worked as a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years, retiring in 1983. Not one to stay idle, he started a small construction business that kept him busy for many years. Following his second retirement, he spent his time doing what he was probably always meant to do - haying (endlessly), farming and tinkering with his many tractors. He could fix just about anything.
He was a “jack-of-all-trades” and a man of many and varied interests and talents. I’m sure that many people didn’t know that he starred in a television commercial. Flying was one of his passions. He was a skilled pilot and shared his love and knowledge of aviation with many friends. He was an avid reader sometimes reading a book a day - he particularly loved books about the past, wars, history and early American life and would often enlighten all of us over coffee with all of the “facts he had just discovered.”
Music was another of his passions. He learned to play the drums at an early age and kept on drumming right up until his death, playing with the Epsom Town Band and the Sanford Band. He rarely missed a parade and the summer concerts at the Rochester Bandstand were one of his favorites.
He liked to cook, mostly as he said because he liked to eat. He often spoiled us at morning coffee with “homemade (right from scratch) goodies.” And it goes without saying that everyone will miss “Grandpa’s incredible whoopee pies.”
But the thing that he enjoyed most was farming - having his few farm animals, but most particularly haying. He absolutely loved to hay. He started getting ready in April and couldn’t wait to get out on the fields with his tractors to cut and bale the hay.
He is survived by three sisters, Gladys and husband Robert Dolby of Stuart, Fla., Mona and husband Gerard Faucher of Somersworth, N.H., and Verna and husband Arthur Thyng of Boynton Beach, Fla.; five children, Mary Wilburn of Ocala, Fla., Pat Foss and Audrey Foss of Berwick, Kristie Smith of Winslow; one son, Matthew Foss who is presently teaching in Africa; along with stepchildren; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He also leaves several cherished friends who he considered family: Dan and Sally McCue of York, Carroll Nelson of Lebanon, Jeff Mortensen of Berwick, and Brian Turner of Rochester, N.H.
He was a man of little words, great integrity, and a heart of gold who touched many lives. He lived his life to the fullest exactly the way he wanted.
In keeping with his wishes there will be no calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held at Springhill in South Berwick on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Everyone is invited. The family encourages you to bring photos, memorabilia, or your favorite “grandpa story” to share will all in remembrance of him.
