Claudette Mathews

SANFORD - Claudette A. (Bergeron) Mathews, 66, of Sanford, died unexpectedly on Oct. 3, 2004 while visiting in Erie, Pa.

She was born on Nov. 17, 1937 in Kennebunkport, the daughter of the late Arthur and Lucia (Perreault) Bergeron.

She attended Kennebunkport schools, graduating in the class of 1956 from Kennebunk High School.

She worked for General Electric and retired from Cyro Industries a year ago.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo and shopping with friends. She enjoyed traveling and especially vacationing in Aruba.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gerald Mathews of Sanford; two sons, Joseph Mathews of Lebanon and Thomas Mathews of Kansas City, Kan.; four daughters, Michelle Bernard of North Haverhill, N.H., Diane Apraham of Glastonbury, Conn., Lisa Lavalley of Acton and Susan Mathews of Rochester, N.H.; four brothers, Roger and Paul Bergeron of Kennebunkport, Lucien H. of Biddeford and Hank R. of Wisconsin; three sisters, Anne Harrington and Mildred Cluff of Kennebunkport, and Irene Keirstead of Old Orchard Beach; two granddaughters; three grandsons; and two great-grandsons.

Brian Stubbs

ROLLINSFORD, N.H. - Brian Gregory Stubbs, 32, of Rollinsford, N.H., died suddenly on Oct. 6, 2004 in Austin, Texas.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas on March 20, 1972, he attended local schools graduating from Port Neches- Groves High School, with the class of 1990; he furthered his education at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas and graduated with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Columbia Southern University. During high school he enjoyed being a ham radio operator, and a member of the Mid-County Unit of the Civil Air Patrol, based at South East Texas Regional Airport; he was also a member of the Beaumont Police Explorers. Following graduation he entered service with the United States Air Force. He graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and attended Security Police tech training school. He served as a security police officer in Berlin, Germany before returning to the United States and being assigned to Bergstrom Air Force Base.

In 1994 he fulfilled a lifelong ambition of becoming a police officer. He joined the Port Arthur Police Department, excelling at his chosen profession, serving in the patrol division and as a field-training officer for new officers. He was promoted to the rank of detective as the youngest detective in the history of the department.

In 1998 he moved with his family to the seacoast, joining the Milton, N.H. Police Department, where he served a year before becoming a member of the City of Portsmouth Police Department. He served the Department in the Patrol Division, and as a field training officer. He enjoyed all aspects of law enforcement, he served as a member of the department's Honor Guard, traveling throughout the United States representing the department, and he also served as one of the department's firearms and child-safety seat instructors. He recently resigned from the Portsmouth Police Department and relocated to Austin, Texas to pursue other opportunities.

He is survived by his family; his children, Mikayla Kathleen and Ryan Gregory Stubbs and their mother Terri (Manderville) Stubbs of Rollinsford, N.H.; his mother, Carolyn and her husband, Larry Bodin of Port Neches, Texas; one sister, Kelli Stubbs and her fiancˇ, David Walton of Old Orchard Beach; one step-brother, Kevin Bodin of Seattle, Wash.; and one uncle, Mike Handy of Fresno, Calif.

His father, Frank Stubbs, predeceased him in 1985.

A memorial Mass was celebrated on Friday at St. Charles Church on Central Avenue in Dover, N.H., with Fr. Paul Gregoire officiating. Refreshments at the church parish hall will follow.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEMOF), 400 7th St., Suite 300, Washington, DC 20004.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Margaret Benson

YORK - Margaret Bliss Benson, 79, died at Harbor Home in York, on Oct. 6, 2004, after a long illness.

Her determined independence and the grace and dignity with which she met her last challenges were an inspiration to the many who adored her. They include her three children, Frank Robert Benson of Taipei, Taiwan, Kathleen Benson Haskins of New York, N.Y., and Craig Alan Benson of York; her daughter-in-law Andrea Benson, her son-in-law James Haskins; her three grandchildren, Michael Craig Benson, Marcus Ellis Benson, and Margaret Emily Haskins; and her two sisters, Jane King Bowers and Dorothy Doolittle nearly all of whom visited her in the last month of her life.

Born Nov. 25, 1924, in Schenectady, N.Y., she grew up in Winchester, N.H., and later lived in Northampton, Mass., Windsor Locks, Conn., Reading, Mass., Wells, Maine, Oxford, Maine, and Poland, Maine.

Her favorite residence was her cottage on Thompson Lake in Oxford. After a modest memorial service for immediate family and friends, her remains were buried at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Society, American Cancer Society, or Androscoggin Home Health Care Center, Lewiston, ME.

Patricia Parkinson

BERWICK - Patricia Ruth Parkinson, 76, of Applegate Village in Berwick, died on Oct. 9, 2004 at her home.

Born in Portland on Aug. 21, 1928, she was a daughter of Minard L. and Gladys C. (Gilbert) Gray. She grew up in Gorham and was raised on the family farm in Gorham; she graduated from Gorham High School.

She met and on Aug. 10, 1952, she married her husband Milton L. Parkinson. Together they made their home in Maine, moving to West Palm Beach, Fla. 30 years ago. In Florida, she was employed as a trucking and police dispatcher.

She enjoyed bowling, winning many bowling tournaments, she competed on television and in a number of leagues, both in Florida and at the "Big 20" on Route 1 in Scarborough.

She returned to Maine three years ago, to be closer to her daughter Joyce and her family; she was embraced by the Berwick Community and her church, the Family Christian Center. She enjoyed her church family and the friends she had made. She was an avid knitter who had donated more than 100 pair of hand-knitted mittens to the "Angel Tree."

She will be missed by those who knew and loved her, including two daughters, Joyce A. and her husband Roland Fogg of Berwick, and Jo Ann Carter of West Palm Beach. Florida; one son, Robert A. and his wife Audrey Parkinson of Lantana, Fla.; two sisters, Estella "Honey" B. Shaw of North Dakota and Claire J. Emerson of Lewiston; six grandchildren, Roland "Butch" Fogg Jr., Melissa J. Main, Michelle L. Fogg, Milton A. Fogg, Crystal Parkinson and Brandey Parkinson; and six great-grandchildren, Katie, Marilyn, Rebekah, Dakota, Dylan and Jacob.

A funeral will be held on Saturday at noon at her church, The Family Christian Center in Sullivan Square in Berwick. Friends may visit with her family from 10 a.m.-noon before the service on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made in her memory to the Family Christian Center, PO Box 1234, 1 Sullivan Sq., Berwick, ME 03901.

Susan Samson

ELIOT - Susan Janet Samson, 51, of Hanscom Road in Eliot, died on Oct. 9, 2004 after a long battle with breast cancer.

She was born on June 3, 1953 in Rumford; she was a daughter of Omer F. and Clarine E. (Tebbetts) Bouthot. She was raised in and attended schools in Mexico, Maine graduating from Mexico High School with the class of 1971.

She resided in Portland for more than 20 years, during this time she was employed as a manager for MacDonald's in South Portland for 15 years. She entered the banking industry in South Portland, working for Key Bank for nearly eight years before moving to Eliot and working in the Kittery Branch of Key Bank for eight more years.

She was an avid NASCAR fan; she with her life partner Ray Wilbur enjoyed following NASCAR and traveling. She enjoyed recent trips to the Grand Canyon, New Orleans, Florida and New York City among many trips they made together.

She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her, including her life partner, Ray Wilbur of Eliot; one son, Aaron Samson of South Portland and his son Devin; one brother, Steve Bouthot of Hollis; one sister, Karen Langevin of Limington; three nieces, Beth Bouthot of Falmouth, Kristen Hayes of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Suzanne Langevin of Germantown, Md.; two nephews, Joshua Bouthot of Manchester, N.H. and Matthew Langevin of Gorham; as well as many friends.

A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the J.. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd., Kittery ME 03904, with refreshments to follow.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, C/O The Komen Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309. (www.komen.org).

Martha Christiansen

LEWISTON - Martha Christiansen, 54, of Lewison, formerly a long-time resident of Norway, Maine, died on Oct. 4 , 2004 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Born on April 3, 1950 in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, she was a daughter of Willis and Clara Thomas. She graduated from Foxcroft Academy; completed nurses training at St. Joseph's Hospital, in Bangor; earned a BSW from the University of Southern Maine in Portland and a MSW from SUNY, Albany, N.Y.

She loved classical and jazz music, fishing at the family camp; poetry, art, the "Wizard of Oz," nature, butterflies, etymology of words, coffee playing scrabble, her pets, and everything purple. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling the world as a young woman. She was a member of the MENSA Society and enjoyed any spirited discussion from, how many different greens are in the forest to String Theory. Though illness and addiction complicated her life, she continually fought to overcome their bonds.

She is survived by one daughter, Jennifer and her husband Douglas Bennett of Bethel; one sister, Dee Bickmore of Kittery; one brother, John Thomas of Stuyvestant, N.Y.: three nieces, Julie, Nikki and Katie; one nephew, John; good friend, Edward Kutlowski of Hampton, N.H.; favorite Aunt Jo; as well as several cousins.

Services will be announced at a later date.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the MSAD 44 Drug and Alcohol Awareness Program, 284 Walkers Mills Rd., Bethel, ME 04217.

Della Currie

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Della (Moses) Currie, 94, resident of the Anchor Guest Home, died Aug. 23, 2004.

She was born in Somerville, Mass. on May 4, 1920. She graduated from Somerville High School in 1928 and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She worked at Tufts College for many years and also at the Fisher Scientific Company of Waltham, Mass. before retirement in 1975.

She was active in the Girl Scouts of Somerville for many years having served as leader and commissioner. She moved to Wells in 1976 and was an active member of the Ogunquit Women's Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Currie, and her daughter, Jean Robertson, and a sister, Velma Walker of Kennebunk.

She is survived by one sister, Rhoda Woodbury of Lincolnville, Maine; two grandsons, William Roberston of Torrence, Calif., and Scott Robertson of Dallas, Texas; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in Mount Auburn cemetery in Cambridge Mass. at a later date.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, ME 04043.

Arthur Erickson

WELLS - Arthur L. Erickson, 75 of Wells died in his home on Oct. 5, 2004.

He was born on Dec. 1, 1928 in New Britain, Conn., a son of Arthur and Ellen (Bergdahl) Erickson. He attended a technical school and was a tool designer for Pratt and Whitney. He also served in the Korean War with the U.S. Marines.

He is survived by his wife Charlotte (Henry) Erickson of Wells; one daughter, Debra Caswell and her husband Walter of Kensington, Conn.; one son, David

Erickson and his wife Julie also of Kensington, Conn.; one sister, Madeline Fazzina and husband Tony of Bristol, Conn.; two brothers, Carl Erickson and his

wife Alma of Kensington, Conn., and Donald Erickson and his wife Judy of New Britain, Conn.; grandchildren, Emily and Will Caswell, Ryan and Lindsay Erickson, and Adam and Jason Sharp.

He was also stepfather to Robert Swartzlander and his wife Mary Ann of Bellflower, Calif., Lisa Swartzlander and her husband William Hansen of Yucca Valley, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also blessed by the special family of Robert and Kimberly Spring their children Nathan and Katherine of Wells.

He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and Ellen (Bergdahl) Erickson; his first wife Jane (Hulstzer) Erickson; a daughter Nancy (Erickson) Sharp and

his sister Doris (Erickson) Anderson.

A private service will be held by the family.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wells EMS, PO Box 1568, Wells, ME 04090.

Ruth Harter

KENNEBUNK - Ruth Harter, 84, of Kennebunk, died May 31, 2003.

The family would like to invite her friends to attend the graveside service at 10 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 23, 2004 at Arundel cemetery on North Street in Kennebunkport.

Anna Potenzo

WEST KENNEBUNK - Anna Marie Potenzo died peacefully on Oct. 5, 2004 at her home in West Kennebunk.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank A. Potenzo.

She is survived by her four children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were private.

She greatly enjoyed the friendship and fun of the 50-plus Club in West Kennebunk.

Elwin Jones Jr.

BERWICK - Elwin V. "Jonesy" Jones Jr., 55, of Hubbard Road, Berwick, died Oct. 10, 2004 in Milton, N.H. as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born in Rochester, N.H. on July 13, 1949, a son of Elwin V. and Enid (Hayes) Jones.

He graduated from Berwick High School and was employed by Cianbro for more than 32 years.

He was well known for his helpful way as well as being very devoted to his loving family. He also enjoyed going to his camp in Seboeis and was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the North American Hunting Club.

He is predeceased by a brother, John C. Jones.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila (Evans) Jones of Berwick; one daughter, Susann Polland and her husband, Daren of Lebanon; two sons, John Jones and his wife, Christine of Somersworth, N.H., and Shaun Jones and his companion, Erica of Berwick; one brother, Robert Jones of Waterboro; three sisters, Maxine Frappier of Chicopee, Mass., Mary Eck of Greentown, Pa., and Judith Buckman of Berwick; seven grandchildren, Samantha Polland, Wesley Polland, Austin Jones, Riley Jones, Joy Clark, Ricco Clark and Cody Clark; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 3-8 p.m. on Saturday at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick. There will be a private family committal service.
