Belle Pelletier

KENNEBUNK - Belle Y. Pelletier, 84, recently of Kennebunk and York Harbor, Maine, formerly of North Andover, Mass., died Sept. 17, 2004 in Burlington, Vt. She was the widow of Charles G. Baker of Georgetown, Mass. And of Dr. Lawrence Pelletier of York Harbor.

She was born in Salem, Mass., March 17, 1920, daughter of the late Ludger and Emma (Goudreau) Desjardins.

She attended LaSell Junior College in Auburdale, Mass. She received her bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston.

She was an avid gardener, not only growing beautiful flowers but arranging, drying and painting them. She was an accredited Mass State Garden Club Show judge and lectured to garden clubs throughout New England. In more recent years she had returned to her study of Japanese Ikinoba School of Flower Arranging.

She was a member of the Andover-Lawrence Camera Club, past president of the Andover, Mass. Garden Club, founder of the Seacoast Garden Club of Maine, founder of the Kennebunk - Kennebunkport Camera Club, and was given a lifetime membership in the State of Maine Garden Club. She was a member of the Old York Garden Club. Recently she joined the Rye, R.H. Art Study Group, was a charter member of the women in the arts of Washington, D.C., a charter member of the Indian Ridge Country Club of Andover, Mass. and a charter member of the Seacoast Science Center of Newcastle, N.H.

She is survived by two sons, Charles W. Baker of Clovis, New Mexico and Richard A. Baker and his wife, Cheryl, of Underhill, Vt.; one sister, Mrs. John (Florence) MacDonald of Rowley, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Following cremation, private graveside services will be held in the Baker Lot at the Harmony cemetery in Georgetown, Mass. at the convenience of the family.

Any remembrances may be made to the York Library, York Street, York, ME 03909 or to the Animal Welfare Society, West Kennebunk, Maine.

Arrangements are by the F.S. Roberts and Son Funeral Home of Rowley.

Louis Arcidy

BEDFORD, N.H. - Louis Arcidy, 79, a noted pioneer in the development and manufacture of electronic components, died Sept. 13, 2004 at Brigham and Women's Hospital after a period of declining health due to aplastic anemia.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass. on Dec. 7, 1924, the son of Alfred and Carmela (Simone) Arcidy. He was the second oldest of four boys and one girl.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He graduated from Lawrence (Massachusetts) High School and St. Michael's College. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. In 1973, he

founded RCD Components, in Manchester, N.H. As a son of Italian immigrant parents, he believed in the American Dream and wanted to share that dream with others by providing job opportunities and highest-quality products. Many of his product designs have been utilized in a variety of space flights, medical, and electronic applications. He was a hardworking generous man with a kind heart who enjoyed meeting and conversing with all kinds of people, even strangers. He was actively involved in numerous charitable organizations and was the sole benefactor of the Franklin Academy, a high school in southern Maine for troubled teens. He spent summers at Old Orchard Beach, where he loved to play bocce with his sons and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Malinda (Maynard) Arcidy; one daughter, Maria Grisanzio; four sons, Louis, Michael, Mark and Alfred; 12

grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Gangi; three brothers, Mike Arcidiacono, Dr. Joseph Arcidi, and Dr. Alfred Arcidi.

He was the June 2004 recipient of the Governor's Commendation, presented by Gov. Benson, for 31 years of distinguished service to the New Hampshire

community, entrepreneurial spirit, philanthropy, and commitment to excellence.

The governor presented the award to him at RCD's headquarters in Manchester, N.H., and honored him for having received Entrepreneur of the Year Award as well building his company into one of New Hampshire's top 100 corporations.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 16 at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Bedford, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, the Arcidy family requests that donations be made or blood contributed to the American Red Cross in his honor. Donations

Charles Conklin II

KENNEBUNK - Geraldine (Smith) Conklin, who spent summers in Kennebunk beginning in 1946, died at Huntington Common on Sept. 16, 2004 where she had lived since May 2003.

She was born Geraldine Lahm Smith in Ambridge, Pa., on Oct. 19, 1921 to Ralph Kitchell Smith, formerly of East Liverpool, Ohio and Thelma Geraldine Lahm who had grown up in Hazleton, Pa. She graduated from Sewickley Academy in Sewickley, Pa., the Oguntz School in Rydal, Pa., and National Park Junior College in Silver Springs, Md. She also attended St. Petersburg Junior College in Florida where her grandparents had a winter home.

She married Charles Morgan Conklin on Feb. 12, 1944 in Sewickley, Pa. He died in Dallas, Texas on Nov. 8, 1993. She was also predeceased by her brother, Ramon Thorpe Smith and a niece Alexandra Smith.

She leaves one son, Ralph Preston Conklin of Kennebunk and one daughter, Ann Smith-Morgan Conklin of Davenport, Iowa; two brothers, Ralph Kitchell Smith of Locust Valley, N.Y. and Jay Lahm Smith of Princeton, N.J.; and two sisters, Anne Smith Vanderwolk of Melvin Village, N.H. and Pinehurst, N.C. and Dr. Margaret Smith Wenzel of Naples, Fla.; and 10 nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend its deepest thanks to Bradford Court and Beacon Hospice. In accordance with her wishes no services will be held and she will be placed in the W.L. Smith mausoleum in East Liverpool, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local Humane Society.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.

Frances Bush

WELLS - Frances Elizabeth Bush, 91, of Ocean Avenue, died Sept. 18, 2004 at her residence.

She was born in Medford, Mass. on Sept. 24, 1912, a daughter of Francis and Elizabeth (Rock) Morgan.

She graduated from Malden High School and worked as an executive secretary. She had worked for the Andover Public School Department, Toledo Scale Company and Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Frederick White, and her second husband, John C. Bush. A sister, Ruth Morgan Basteri also predeceased her.

She is lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews and also survived by a few very close friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wells. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Spring Grove cemetery in Andover, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Caritas Holy Family Hospital, 70 East St., Methuen, MA 01844.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells.

Albert Davis

ELIOT - Albert E. Davis, 80, of 22 Dixon Ave. in Eliot, died on Sept. 15, 2004 at his home.

Born on Dec. 19, 1923, he was a son of the late Elbridge and Lettie A. (Shapleigh) Davis, he was an 11th-generation Eliot native, growing up and raising his family only a short distance from the home where he was born in South Eliot. He graduated from Eliot High School with the class of 1941. He loved sports and as a young man played baseball in the Sunset League of Portsmouth, N.H. and the Twilight League of Eliot.

In 1949 he met and married his loving wife of 58 years, Minnie Florence (Noseworthy). Together they made their home and raised their family in Eliot. A man of strong conviction, he constantly strived to help make his neighborhood and town a wonderful place to raise a family.

He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. During World War II he participated in the invasion of Sicily, Anzeo, Italy and Southern France. He was a shipfitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring after 31 years of government service.

He was a long-time member of the Eliot Volunteer Fire Department and Naval Lodge 184 AF & AM of Kittery and recently received his 50-year pin as a Mason. He was also a member of Eliot American Legion Post 188.

An avid gardener he enjoyed spending time in his flower and vegetable gardens, family and friends enjoying the vegetables he grew throughout the summer. He enjoyed traveling throughout Maine, with his wife, especially his frequent trips to Machias.

He is survived by his loving family, who will miss him dearly, his loving wife Minnie; two daughters, Joan M. Pelkey and her partner Dennis Gaffney of Eliot, and Anita and Charles Bradstreet of Eliot; one son, Thomas A. Davis of Kittery; grandchildren, Jeffrey S. Pelkey and his wife Julia of Eliot, Jonathan C. Bradstreet of Eliot, Jennifer Pelkey Silsby and her husband George of Eliot, Mandy Davis Lamson of South Berwick, and Kayla and Kendra Davis of Lee, N.H.; one great-grandson who enjoyed spending time with his "Old Grampa" Justin M. Pelkey of Eliot; two sisters, Alice Davis and Bernice Muchemore, both of Eliot and their families.

He was predeceased by his brother Philip Davis and a sister Arlene Barrett.

A memorial service was held on Sunday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery.

Burial followed in Brooks Memorial cemetery with a time of refreshment at McPherson Hall on State Road in Eliot to follow.

Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the Eliot Volunteer Fire Department, 141 State Rd., Eliot, ME 03903 or to the Naval Lodge 184, PO Box 184, Kittery, ME 03904 .

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Maynard Guill

KITTERY - Maynard (Brandon) Guill, known to his friends as "Bob" 83, of 15 Phelps St. in Kittery, died on Sept. 15, 2004 surrounded by his family at Varney Crossing Nursing Care in North Berwick.

Born on March 18, 1921 in Sutherland, Va., he was the middle son of the late Leslie F. and Pauline (Brandon) Guill. A graduate of Roxboro High School in Roxboro, N.C., he entered the United States Navy serving as a military convoy escort during World War II. Following his military service after the war he went back to Roxboro to work his farm for several years before moving to Maine and working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Shop 11 as a foreman shipfitter.

He enjoyed woodworking but his passion was for the game of golf. He belonged to Cape Neddick Golf Club for close to 50 years where he enjoyed the many tournaments of the twilight league and proudly displayed his many trophies he earned. After retiring, he enjoyed spending time during the winter months back at his home in Roxboro and summers in Maine.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley (Reynolds) Guill of Kittery; two daughters, Betsy Gail Needham of Sanford, and Susan Guill DeRoy and her husband Joe A. DeRoy of New Durham, N.H.; four grandchildren, Sherry L. Day, Harold B. Needham, James G. Needham and Joe A. DeRoy Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Garrett and Kathyrn Day and Rodman Needham; three brothers, Leslie Franklin and Myree Guill of Roxboro, N.C. and James Malcolm Guill; and his partner, Hilda Stuart of Walnut Cove, N.C.

Services will be private.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Phyllis Groves

YORK BEACH - Phyllis B. Groves, 82, of 15 Beacon St., York Beach, widow of John S. Groves, died Sept. 13, 2004 at York Hospital.

She was born in Nashua, N.H. on Aug. 29, 1922, the daughter of Kenneth and Dorothy (Spaulding) Buxton and was a 1940 graduate of Nashua High School.

She had lived in Nashua and Hudson, N.H. for most of her life. She and her husband had summered in York Beach for more than 40 years and operated Groves Cottages from 1961 to 1978. She had wintered in Spring Hill, Fla. for 25 years.

She was a devoted wife and loving mother. She dedicated her life spending time with her children and grandchildren. What she enjoyed most was being surrounded by her family and friends. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her was energized by her love. She was a perky lady. She was known to have a love of games including, cribbage, card games and Yahtzee, which she spent many hours playing with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, John S. Groves, who died in April 2003.

Survivors include three sons, John S. Groves Jr. and his wife, Judith of York Beach and Florida, Richard S. Groves of Rye, N.H. and Steven P. Groves and his wife, Kathy of York Beach; one daughter, JoAnn Daniels and her husband, Mark of Kittery; one sister, Lucille Sanders of Chelmsford, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday Oct. 1 at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Rd., York. Private burial will be in Hudson, N.H.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations may be sent to the York Public Library, 15 Long Sands Rd., York, ME 03909.

Elsa Crossley

KENNEBUNK - Elsa B. Crossley, 88, a Kennebunk resident for the past 27 years, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 31, 2004.

She was born Elsa Florence Bates on Dec. 19, 1915 in Boston, Mass. to Arthur P. and Anna H. Bates. She was also educated in Boston, graduating from Girls' Latin School in 1933, and in 1937 from Boston University's College of Liberal Arts, where she majored in German. She received her master of arts in English education from the University of Connecticut in 1967.

She was an executive secretary at the Paine Furniture Company in Boston from 1938 to 1945. It was during that time that she met Arch Linsey Crossley, originally of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They were married May 24, 1941, and had two children, Marcia and Alan.

Following the family's move to Connecticut, she began a career at Waterford High School in 1960, teaching German, Latin, and English. She served as head of the Language Department from 1974 to 1977, when she retired and moved with her husband to Maine.

As reflected in her studies and career, she carried a love of languages throughout her life, which, along with Arch's skill as a writer, made for a home that was rich in discussion and seldom a haven for wayward grammar. She loved to read and excelled at cryptic crossword puzzles. She also had great fondness for opera and classical music. And many family members and friends will long treasure her outstanding and original knitting designs in the form of sweaters, scarves, and Christmas stockings.

During her retirement in Maine, she did volunteer work for several years for the Southern Maine Medical Center Auxiliary as a member of the Pine Tree Twig, and as secretary of her Kennebunk condominium.

She was predeceased by her sister, Edith Pierce, her husband, Arch, her daughter, Marcia Crossley Brine, and her granddaughter, Jennifer Brine.

She is survived by one son, Alan, and his wife, Nancy, of Waterford, Conn.; one grandson, Andrew Brine of Kingston, Mass.; one great-granddaughter, Andrea Curtin, also of Kingston; one son-in-law, Charles Brine of Halifax, Mass.; and one nephew, Keith P. Garland and his wife, Jan, of Southern Pines, N.C.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday Sept. 28 at Huntington Commons, One Huntington Common Dr., Kennebunk.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send donations to Beacon Hospice, 54B Atlantic Pl., South Portland, ME 04106, or to the charity of their choice.

Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Edward Hanway

YORK - Edward P. Hanway, 63, of York, died April 16, 2004.

Born Feb. 8, 1941, he was the son of William and Mary Hanway of Brighton, Mass.

He attended local schools there and went on to graduate from Northeastern University. He served in the United States Air Force and had a career in the United States Post Office. He was a very active member and past president of the York Lions Club. He also enjoyed ballroom dancing, candlepin bowling and ice skating.

He is survived by his two sisters, Lyn Leisentritt of Cape Neddick, and Barbara Hanway of Brighton, Mass.; one brother, Bill Hanway of North Scituate, R.I.; and will be missed by his two nephews; one niece; one great-niece; and one great-nephew.

Jo-Ann Karalus

KENNEBUNKPORT - Jo-Ann B. Karalus, 58, Oakwood Drive, died Sept. 1, 2004 at her residence after a long illness.

She was born in New Haven, Conn. on Feb. 20, 1946, the daughter of Paul and Lucille (Amarone) Beletski.

She worked for Brookstone for 25 years and most recently had served as vice president of Human Resources.

She married Ronald Karalus on Sept. 7, 1968.

A loving wife and mother, she was known as a wonderful friend, communicator and was a fighter to the end.

She is survived by her husband of Kennebunkport; one son, Ronald Karalus Jr. and his wife Lauree of Oxford, Mich.; her parents of Waterford, Conn.; one brother, Anthony Beletski of Waterford, Conn.; and two grandchildren, Hannah and Ryan Karalus, both of Oxford, Mich.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk. Burial followed at Arundel Cemetery.
