Kenneth Peschel, 79
YORK - Kenneth Russell "Carl" Peschel, 79, of York died July 11, 2003 at York Hospital, following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma for the last 18 months.
He was born on July 16, 1923 in Shrewsbury, Mass. He proudly served the local community as owner and proprietor with his wife of Carl's Meat Market in Kittery for more than 25 years. He also ran a discount grocery market in Greenland, N.H. for a number of years.
His parents were Carl G. Peschel and Ida (Bramann) Peschel, immigrants from Germany. He was the youngest of eight children, all deceased. They were Alma Steinheilber, Meta Gilbride, Freda Schultz, Edna Bettcher, Alice Schultz, Emil Peschel, and Arthur Peschel. He has many nieces, nephews, and cousins in the area.
He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1940. He served at sea in the United States Navy for four years during World War II. After serving his country, he attended college in Wilmington, Ohio and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in 1950.
He lived on Haley Road in Kittery Point for many years and moved to Branch Road in Wells following his retirement. In Wells he enjoyed his hobby of raising, training and racing harness horses. He moved to York Maine in 2002 to be closer to his beloved grandchildren and more easily attend their sporting events.
He enjoyed more than 45 summers at his summer home at Bunganut Pond in Lyman. He spent winter months at Deerfield Beach and Mexico Beach, Fla.
He enjoyed membership in Lamba Phi Fraternity, Kittery Naval Lodge No. 184 and Piscataqua Chapter OES 90 where he was Past Patron, Maine Harness Association, and United States Trotting Association in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York.
Surviving him are his loving wife of 53 years Hilda (Harris) Peschel; two daughters, Donna Paddock and her husband Bruce Paddock of Panama City, Fla., and Nancy Peschel and her husband Robert Eaton of Kittery Point; two grandchildren, Hana Eaton and Zachary Eaton of Kittery Point.
A funeral was held on Wednesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery. Burial followed in Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot.
Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to the Oncology Center at York Hospital, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Martin Rees, 62
ELIOT - Martin "Marty" J. Rees, 62, of Imperial Marshwood Estates in Eliot, died July 11, 2003 at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer.
Born in New Dover, Ohio on Sept. 11, 1940, he was a son of Ralph M. and Audrey (Williams) Rees. He attended local schools graduating from Marysville High School with the class of 1958.
He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force.
He met and in 1965 married his loving wife of more than 38 years Linda (Wurm) Rees. They made their home for many years in Sanford, where he was employed in the eye-care field, working for Associated Eye Care as an ophthalmic surgical technician. He began and operated his own business. Eyes Have It, in Sanford for many years. He was most recently employed by Dr. Menard until his retirement in April of this year.
Most recently he and his family had moved to Eliot, where he continued to enjoy his past times of fishing; fresh-water fly fishing, was a favorite. He enjoyed time spent on his boat and tying flies. He also enjoyed computers and traveling, he spoke often of his trip to Egypt with a friend. He will be remembered by so many for his love of family and sense of humor, even through his tough battle he could make others laugh.
He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him, including his wife Linda (Wurm) Rees of Eliot; their daughter Chalis Rees of Eliot; and their son and his family Darrin and his wife LeAnn Rees and their son Nico of Hartford, Conn.; as well as his brother Wayne D. and his wife Barbara Rees of Ohio; and his sister-in-law Beverly Wurm of Eliot.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery. Family flowers only; donations may be made in his memory to York Hospital, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are entrusted to the Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Yonka M. Story, 88
SOUTH BERWICK - Yonka M. Story, 88, of 109 Old Fields Rd., died July 12, 2003 at York Hospital following a long illness.
Born in Portsmouth, N.H. Aug. 21, 1914, she was the daughter of John and Olga (Mitzgar) Metrick.
A longtime resident of South Berwick, she was a retired pastry cook. She was employed at Homestead Restaurant of South Berwick, Ames Farm Inn on Lake Winnepasaukee, Dancing Fan at Ogunquit, Linire Inn in Eliot and by Dr. Robert Morris at various times during her many years of employment.
She was of the Episcopal faith and was affiliated with Christ Church of Portsmouth, N.H.
For many years, she was affiliated with and participated in numerous Scout activities. She was the first woman in the state of Maine to receive the Silver Beaver Award. Her Scout involvements include Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
She was a member and past president of South Berwick Woman's Club and was active at South Berwick Senior Center. She was active in Grange and was a member of Somersworth and Ouamphan Grange. In past years she was active in PTA.
Among her favorite activities was square dancing.
Family members include her husband, Percy K. Story of South Berwick whom she married Jan. 2, 1938; one son William K. Story and his wife Virginia Martel-Story of Falmouth, Maine; one daughter, Elizabeth L. "Betty" Watts and her husband Donald Watts of South Berwick; one brother Nicholas Metrick of Gonic; two sisters, Ann Clark of Stokton, Calif. and Jenny Exas of Dover, N.H.; three grandchildren, Sandra Foley of Rye, N.H., Tiffany Stanley of Gray and Brooke Story of Windham; one great-grandchild Sophia Foley of Rye, N.H.; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son David Story, a granddaughter Ethel Dussault, a brother Michael Metrick and two sisters, Louise Morin and Mary Huyck.
The funeral was conducted at McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, Wednesday with the Rev. Robert S. Ervin, rector, St. Thomas Episcopal Church officiating. Burial followed in the family lot at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, South Berwick.

Francis West
WILTON, Conn. - Francis D. West of Wilton, Conn. and York, Maine died July 10, 2003 at Norwalk Hospital. He was the husband of Jeanne C. West.
Born Feb. 17, 1925 in Woodbury, Vt., he moved to York at an early age. He met his wife there when he was 16 years old and she was 14.
He was a U.S. submarine veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Trepang.
He had a long career in the cigar industry starting in 1944 with Webster Cigars of New York. He continued his career with Bayuk Cigars of Pennsylvania and United States Tobacco Company of Greenwich, Conn. At the time of his retirement, he was vice president of cigar operations for U.S. Tobacco Company, president and C.E.O. of House of Windsor, Yoe, Pa., and president and C.E.O. of Honduran Cigar Imports Ltd., Central America.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, his is survived by his daughter Catherine W. Bradley and her husband Barry F. Bradley of Northport, Nev.; one son Francis M. West and his wife Jennifer S. West of Fairfield, Conn.; and one beloved granddaughter Landregan A. Bradley of Northport, N.Y.
He was predeceased by his daughter Linda J. Valli who died at her home in Norwalk, Conn. on June 26 tragically from a fall.
Funeral services are private for both father and daughter and internment for both will be at First Parish Church Cemetery, York.
Alice Williams, 89
WELLS - Alice (Prince) Williams, 89, a resident of Fern Street, Drakes Island, Wells, formerly of Wellesley Hills, Mass. and Huntingdon Valley, Pa. died peacefully June 24, 2003 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
She was the widow of John A. Williams who died in 1998. During the past few years she resided at Huntington Commons and the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Brookline, Mass. Oct. 30, 1913, a daughter of George W. and Eva (Triggs) Prince. She attended Brookline Mass. schools and the American Institute of Banking in Boston, Mass. She was a bank teller at the Brookline Savings Bank for 15 years, but her life's work was caring for her beloved family and numerous friends. She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Kennebunk and for more than 15 years she assisted in operating the church's Budget Box store.
She is survived by one daughter Janet A. Pelletier of Kennebunk; one son Geoffrey P. and his wife Myra C. Williams of Clifton Park, N.Y.; one sister Edith P. Johnson of Hanover, Mass.; two grandchildren, Megan Candace and Kate Pelletier; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial services were held June 28 at St. David's Episcopal Church, Kennebunk. Interment was in Hope Cemetery.

Joan Burns, 75
SACO - Joan F. Burns, 75, a resident of North Street, Saco formerly of Andover, Mass., died June 6, 2003 at the Evergreen Manor after a long illness.
She was born in Andover, Mass. on Jan. 31, 1928, a daughter of William Fleming and Alice Leary. She graduated from Andover High School and also graduated from Lasell College in Boston.
She was a homemaker for many years. She was a member of Lanam Club, Andonna Society, and November Club and also member of St. Augustine's Church, all of Andover, Mass.
She spent summers in Fortunes Rocks Beach for many years.
She loved to ride horses, cooking and spend time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Donald S. Burns of Kennebunk; four daughters, Holly Johnson of Kennebunkport, Heidi Maynard of Kennebunkport, Sarah Bushee of Duxbury, Mass., and Amy Gaynor of Kennebunkport; four grandchildren, Lindsey B. Johnson, Corey B. McInnis, Whitney A. Bushee and Colin Gaynor.
Visiting hours will be held from 1 to 2 PM Wednesday June 11,2003
A celebration of life will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk.

Lynn Collins, 56
KENNEBUNK - Lynn O. Collins, 56, died peacefully at home in Kennebunk after a long struggle with breast cancer on June 4, 2003.
She had a vivacious spirit that she generously shared with those around her. She was an avid and talented quilter and artist. Whether quilting, gardening, or painting, she was fascinated by color and pattern and had a passion for all things creative that was infectious to others. She was the long-time owner and originator of Mountain Sunshine, a retail business selling ornaments and jewelry that showcased her talent in design and sculpture. In recent years she became heavily involved in other art forms, creating beautiful and complex works predominantly in fabric and pastel.
She was an active member of Art Quilts Maine, Evergreen Quilters, Art of The Cloth, and The Pastel Painters of Maine. She was also a well-known and frequent exhibitor in regional craft shows from Maine to Maryland. She believed that artwork brought joy and peace, and created several quilts that bring a sense of calm to those receiving care at the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine.
She was born in Springfield, Mass., and attended schools in Bennington, VT.
She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1969 and completed a Masters in education at Simmons College in Boston, Mass. She lived in Kennebunk for the last 17 years and prior to that in Bennington, Vt. She is survived by her husband, Robert A. Collins of Kennebunk; her mother Eve Oldendorph of Bennington, Vt.; and two daughters, Lisa Collins and son-in-law Alex Downs of Portland and Rebecca Collins and son-in-law John Mixon of Knoxville, Tenn.

Luella Hanson, 75
KENNEBUNK - Luella "Betty" Hanson, 75, died June 4, 2003 at her home from complications of lung cancer.
She was born July 4, 1927, in Massachusetts and raised in Kennebunkport; graduating from Kennebunkport High School in 1945.
She is the daughter of the late Jesse Arthur and Beatrice (Campbell) Shute. She was a mother and homemaker until 1969 when she began a banking career after raising her four children. She joined York County Savings Bank in 1973 and was promoted to manager of the Kennebunk branch in 1979. She also served as president of the Maine Association of Savings Banks for Women, Southern Region.
She married Bragdon Hanson, then president of B.F. Emery Company in Kennebunk in 1972. They lived in Kennebunk and Acton until his death in 1999. In keeping with her interest in reading and literature, she continued to work part time at the Acton Library after retirement. She returned to live in Kennebunk in 2000.
She is survived by her four children, Galvin Boston of California, Susan Solana of Florida, Robert Boston of Saco and Gail Colarossi of Wells; one brother, Arthur Shute of East Sebago; five grandchildren, Craig, Corey, Derek, Michael and Ashley; and two great-grandchildren, Brianna and Killian; and four step-children, Joanna Flanders, Linda Coomer, Bethany Hanson and Seth Hanson.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, North Street, Kennebunkport, with Rev. Steinroeder officiating.

Mary Phillips, 88
LACONIA, N.H. - Mrs. Mary J. Phillips, 88, formerly of 256 Laconia Rd., Tilton, N.H., died on May 23, 2003 at the Belknap County Nursing Home.
She was the widow of Linwood G. Phillips who died on May 3, 1990.
She was born March 3, 1915 in West Stewartstown, N.H., the daughter of Wesley and Myrtle (Shaw) Mills. She lived in W. Stewartstown, N.H. and graduated from Canaan (Vermont) High School in 1933.
In September of 1934, she married Linwood Phillips. They built a home on Park Street in Colebrook, N.H. and later moved to Columbia, N.H. where they
lived until 1959. Their last home in the North Country was on Rte. 26, Dixville Notch. In 1980 they moved to Belmont, N.H. After her husband's death, she moved in with her son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur and Norma Phillip, in Tilton, N.H. She enjoyed their home and the array of flowers and the colors. She spent the last couple of years at the Belknap County
Nursing Home. She was a homemaker for all of her adult life.
She was a good cook, loved to sew, and kept busy with crafts and also a green thumb with African violets.
She attended the Evangelical Baptist Church of Laconia.
Survivors include five sons, Wesley Phillips and his wife Gloria of Ilion, N.Y., Lester Phillips of Langdon, N.H., Wilbur Phillips and his wife Norma of Tilton, N.H., Richard Phillips and his wife Barbara of Georgetown, Texas, and Bradley Phillips and his wife Sandra of Richland, N.J.; one daughter, Linda Whipple of Sunapee, N.H.; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Mills of Texas; three sisters, Virginia Crawford of Groveton, N.H., Eva Stevens of Columbia, N.H. and Ethel Goodwin of Colebrook, N.H.; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Waldo Mills and by a sister, Dorothy Mills.
A funeral service was held on May 27 at 1 p.m. at the
Congregational Church, Main Street, Colebrook, N.H. Burial will followed in the family lot in Village Cemetery, Colebrook, N.H.
