Ms. Catherine Neel
Catherine Lorraine Neel, 92, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at the home she shared with her sister, Theresa N. Bohrer on Long Corner Road, Mount Airy.
She was born in Boyds on Dec. 29, 1916. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Thomas and Laura Dorsey Neel.
She was a 1941 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and went on to earn her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from the University of Maryland.
Lorraine, as she was known to friends, spent most of her adult life in Baltimore. She enjoyed a 40-year career at University of Maryland Hospital, retiring in 1981 as a deputy director of nursing. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Nursing Honor Society, and remained in close touch with friends from the hospital and her nursing days, well into retirement.
She was a devout Catholic and a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Poplar Springs. She was active in the Auxiliary of the Little Sisters of the Poor during her time in Baltimore, and spent many hours in service and spiritual retreats.
Nina, as she was affectionately called by family and close friends, was devoted to family and friends. She participated in the Women's Civic League during her years in Baltimore and for many years attended and helped with the famed Flower Mart. She enjoyed travel and during her retirement traveled to the Caribbean, Hawaii and Alaska, among other places.
Her biggest joy in life was her family. During her working years in Baltimore, she always returned to the family home in Mount Airy to spend weekends, later going to her sister's home in Long Corner, following the passing of her parents.
She felt very connected to her extended family and frequently visited family members in Montgomery and Frederick counties. She documented family history and visited many churches and cemeteries in the area to find the grave sites of members of the Neel and Dorsey families.
She is survived by two nieces, for whom she was a second-mother, Patricia L. Schmidt and husband, Roland, of Mount Airy, and Pamela Bohrer Brown and husband, Bill, of Baltimore. She was the great-aunt to Jim Thren and wife, Cathy, Michelle Easterday and husband, David, Stacey Murphy and husband, Mike, all of Mount Airy, and Nicolas Brown and Amanda Brown of Baltimore. She was the great-great-aunt to Jimmy, Tyler, Jordan and Jacob Thren, Dustin and Tiffani Easterday, Brittany and Ashley Murphy, all of Mount Airy, and Kaden Brown of Baltimore.
She was preceded in death by a little brother, who died in infancy and her sister, Theresa, who died Jan. 28, 2009.
She will be lovingly remembered by her faithful caregiver Debbie Ruppert, and her part-time caregiver Megan Durbin; as well as friends, Janice and Colin Rogers, and Mildred Foster; and cousins, Charles and Lorraine Ridgely, Kay Poole and Etta Spaulding.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Father Michael Ruane will officiate. Interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jim Thren, David Easterday, Mike Murphy, Nicolas Brown, Jimmy Thren, Tyler Thren, Dustin Easterday and Bud Lanich.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Poplar Springs.
Mrs. Ruth Irene Johnson
Mrs. Ruth Irene Johnson (Irene), 82, of Frederick, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Kline Hospice House.
Born July 30, 1926, in Newport News, Va., she was the daughter of the late Franklin Fitzhugh and Ruth Lavinia (Llewellyn) Hopkins. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Edward (Buck) Johnson, who passed away in 1973.
She lived with her husband and children in Damascus and was a charter member of First Baptist Church of Damascus. She moved to Germantown in 1973, where she continued to drive a school bus for special needs students for Montgomery County Public Schools. She retired after 25 years and moved to a beach retreat built by her family in Cove Point (Calvert County).
She loved to walk the beach, collect fossils, read, crochet, attend Calvert Bible Church, and volunteer at the Calvert Marine Museum and for Calvert Hospice. But throughout her life, her great passion was sharing her faith with others through home Bible studies and reaching out with compassion and love to those in need.
In her later years, she moved to Crestwood Village in Frederick to be closer to her family, and she attended South End Baptist Church. When her health began to fail, she moved to Country Meadows Retirement Communities of Frederick and, near the end, to Kline Hospice House.
She is survived by her sons, William F. Johnson and wife, Vickie, of Frederick, and Daniel E. Johnson and wife, Cindy, of Mount Airy; and a daughter, Christy Diane Johnson of Crosby, Texas. She was a grandmother to Carrie, Stacie, Tessa, Frank, Wayne, Tricia, Ben and Steve. She was a great-grandmother of 12.
She is survived by a cousin who was raised as a sister, Barbara Johansen Herfurth, of Florida. She was predeceased by a brother, Franklin F. Hopkins Jr.; and a son-in-law, Jerry Johnson.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, at South End Baptist Church, 506 Carrollton Drive, Frederick, officiated by the Rev. Kenneth Stalls. The family will recieve friends at 9:30 a.m. prior to the memorial service. Interment will follow for immediate family only, officiated by the Rev. Thurlow Switzer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice of Frederick County, your local hospice or to South End Baptist Church.

Mr. H. Donald Hood
Mr. H. Donald Hood, 86, of Mount Airy, died Saturday morning, Feb. 7, 2009, at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Walkersville. He was the devoted husband of Mrs. Eleanor Mae Moxley Hood, his wife of 65 years.
Born Nov. 14, 1922 in Harrisville, he was the son of the late Howard Ephrain and Olea Runkles Hood.
He was a very active member of Prospect United Methodist Church, Mount Airy. Additionally, he served for 53 years as a trustee for the church and served on the cemetery committee.
In earlier years, Mr. Hood farmed. In 1952, until his retirement, he operated "Hood Meats." He enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, reading and traveling. He also enjoyed the history of Frederick County of which he was very knowledgeable.
Surviving besides his wife are four children, D. Wayne Hood and wife Mary of California, K. Allen Hood of Myersville and friend Fran Tipton, Darlene Clay and husband Ronnie of Middletown, and Larry R. Hood and wife Charmaine of Mount Airy; grandchildren, David Hood and wife and Brian Hood and wife Kelly, all of Frederick, Vance Hood and wife Kathy of Hagerstown, Tracy Hood and wife Kim and Todd Hood and wife Marcy, all of California; as well as eight great-grandchildren; and siblings, C. Ellis Hood and wife Lillian of Unionbridge, Elizabeth Kraft, and Betty Leatherwood and husband Howard, all of Mount Airy.
Mr. Hood was preceded in death by a grandson, Ronald Dale Clay; Harold E. and John Wesley Hood; as well as in-laws, Lee Kraft and Louise Hood.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the kind and gracious care that was provided him.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, 26401 Ridge Road, Damascus. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Prospect United Methodist Church, 5923 Woodville Road, Mount Airy. Rev. Vicki S. Curry, his pastor, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the churchyard.
Serving as bearers will be Glen, Denis, Terrance and Scott Hood, Billy Scheel and Mark Plazinski.

Ms. Lynn Hale
Lynn Marie Hale, 41, of Annapolis, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at her home.
She was born Aug. 5, 1967, in Hawaii, to Lawrence T. Pembroke of Ashville, N.C. and the late Lana DeBolt. Ms. Hale worked as a real estate agent with Long and Foster Real Estate in Annapolis.
She is survived by her children, Justin Hale of Morrisville, N.C. and Jessica Hale of Morrisville, N.C.; sister, Lisa K. Hall of Summerton, S.C.; and former husband, James Hale of Morrisville, N.C.
Funeral services were held at noon Saturday, Feb. 7, at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgeley Ave. Annapolis.

Mr. Wade Clark
Wade Cordell Clark, 52, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at Citizens Nursing Home, Frederick. Wade was born March 3, 1956. He was the son of the late Myrvin C. Clark and Dorothy M. Clark.
Wade was a poster boy for Down's Syndrome and worked with Mrs. Hubert Humphrey to bring awareness of Down's Syndrome. Wade graduated from Special Education School at Steven Knolls at the age of 21.
Wade was well-known through out Frederick. He worked for Jeanny Bussards Work Shop. Wade loved all types of music; he loved to dance. Wade was active with the Church of the Nazarene, he was a Boy Scout; he was part of the Arc of Frederick County program and the Special Olympics. Wade won more than 20 Gold metals. He was a excellent swimmer and loved Basketball, Mickey Mouse, Spiderman and Superman.
Wade is survived by brothers, Myrvin K. Clark, Paul C. Clark, Mark L. Clark, Jeffrey L. Clark; and sister, Julia Clark Foster. The late John A. McDonald was a dear and close lifelong friend. Eleanor Hanlan was Wade's friend and girlfriend of 14 years. Wade is survived by 13 nieces and nephews.
Wade was best-known for his smile; his gentleness; his happy attitude and positive approach to living. Wade gave the greatest of gifts, love. Wade brighten every room he entered.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Wade will join his father and mother at Arlington National cemetery.

Mr. James Glacken
James Edward Glacken, 83, of Taneytown, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Golden Living Center in Gettysburg, Pa.
Born July 20, 1925, in Emmitsburg, he was the son of the late James Michael and Carrie Mae Lookingbill Glacken. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Wilson Glacken, his wife of 33 years.
He worked as a plumber for more than 33 years and was retired from his trade. He served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Keysville Lutheran Church, Hesson Snider American Legion Post 120 and Monocacy Valley VFW in Harney.
He enjoyed spending time with family, camping and traveling.
Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Charles "Ron" Schwinger of Taneytown and Sharon and Robert Summers of Taneytown; sister, Margaret Zepp of Hanover, Pa.; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and David Martin of Union Bridge; and brother, Leroy "Skip" Glacken of Union Bridge. He was the proud grandparent of grandson, Bobby Summers; and great-grandchildren, Hayley and Zachary Summers. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by sisters Mary Smith and Helen Pletzer, and brothers Charles, William, Maurice and George Glacken.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown. Deacon Charles E. Barnhart Jr. will officiate.
Interment will follow in Keysville Union cemetery, Keysville.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the funeral home.
Mr. Albert R. Brown
Mr. Albert R. (Dick) Brown, 80, of Sabillasville Road, Sabillasville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at his home. Born Aug. 11, 1928, in Highfield, he was the son of the late John A. and Amanda Pryor Brown.
He was a self-employed excavator, as well as a member of Blue Ridge Sportsman's Association. He attended St. John's United Church of Christ, Sabillasville.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vada P. Gladhill Brown. They were married
Feb. 8, 1947. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Sandra L. Leisner of Daytona Beach, Fla., Pamela K. Cauthen and husband, Donald, of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; sister, Helen Snyder of Thurmont; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna M. Laia; and a brother, Glen Brown.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, from St. John's United Church of Christ, with Pastor Janet Comings officiating. Family will receive friends immediately following the service in the parish hall.

Mr. Robert Hartman
Robert Lewis Hartman, 54, of Libertytown, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at his residence.
Born March 15, 1954 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of Norma Wallace Hartman of McMurray, Pa. and the late Howard Standish Hartman.
Mr. Hartman was a 1972 graduate of Peters Township High School. He was employed in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas in building supply sales and was currently with Kohl Building Supply in Frederick.
He enjoyed his friendships through work, small engine repair, fishing, camping and go-cart racing.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are daughter, Taylor Joanna Hartman of Libertytown and her mother, Jan Hartman; two sisters, Diane Postrech of Canonsburg, Pa., Sue Hartman of Washington, Pa.; one brother, Bruce W. Hartman of Chesapeake, Va.; and three nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Pittsburgh.

Ms. Gail Mullican Kelley
Gail Ernestine Mullican Kelley, 87, of Rockville and more recently a resident of Country Meadows of Frederick, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at College View Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Cordell Kelley, and daughter, Rita Diane Kelley Williams.
Born Feb. 21, 1921, in Lewisdale, she was the daughter of Ernest W. and Mary Etta Kinna Mullican.
Gail was a member of Rockville United Methodist Church and was employed with the Montgomery County Board of Education. She did volunteer work as a Grey Lady at Suburban Hospital.
She is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Jeannette Kelley Seymour and husband, Oliver David (Bud), of Hedgesville, W.Va.; and a son, Ernest Cordell Kelley and wife, Rita, of Towson. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, from the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Dr. Thomas J. Huff, chaplain of Country Meadows.
Interment will be at Hyattstown United Methodist Church cemetery.
